B. P; WILLIAMSON.
CARPET STRETOHER.
Patented Nov. 18, 1884.
[HIV/2331218.
2m .1 X" W NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN F. WILLIAMSON, OF PITTSBOROUGH, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE WELLS, OF SAMEPLAOE.
CARPET-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,122, dated November 18,1884.
Application filed June 16, 1884. (No model.)
T 0 allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. WILLIAM- soN, a resident of Pittsborough, Hendricks county, Indiana, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Oarpet-Stretch'ers, a description of which is set forth in the following specification, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in the several figures of which like letters indicate like parts.
My invention relates to the construction of carpet-stretchers wherein a head is connected with one or more folding extensible arms, and will be understood from the following descrip tion.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of my device with the parts of the arms at an angle and in position for stretching the carpet. Fig. 2 represents a plan view. a
In detail h is the head having teeth, as shown, and is'attached to an arm composed of two parts, of which theinner, a, slides in the outer, a, and a pin, p, is passed through holes made in the parts at suitable distances to fasten the sliding parts together, and to serve as a fulcrum when the outer partis used as a lever for stretching the carpet.
c is a clamp connected to the sides of a and passing over the top, and may be moved along to any point, and acts as a stop to keep the end of a from flying up and out between the sides of (Z when extended.
1) is a brace or bar uniting the ends of a at the rear.
h is a hinge coupling arm a a to the buttpiece, which is of two parts, I), which is forked, and the inner piece, I), which moves up and down in b for extension to any greater length I or closing to make itshorter. Alock, Z, moving on the side of b and slotted to admit the passage of the pin 0, is provided with a beveled loop on top to lock the bar 12 when thrown up at an angle to b. This lock is adjustable at any point on the part b, and may belocked anywhere on the line of extension, as shown in Fig. 1. I thus provide a carpet-stretcher which may be used the whole length of a room, the butt-piece resting against the wash-board by throwing the extensible arms up at an angle, andthen fixing the teeth of the head in the carpet a firm pressure of the hand in moving the part a. up and down on pivot 1) will force the arms to straighten out, stretching the carpet in the proper direction without tearing it. The operation is simple and easily understood.
pins p p in the holes shown in the sides.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following, viz:
1. The butt-piece composed of extensible parts b b, and provided withlock Z, having loop Z and slotted sides 8, in combination with an arm and lever, substantially as described.
2. The carpet-stretcher having head 6, extensible arm a a, clamp a, brace b", hinge b, butt-piece b I), lock Z, having loop Z and slots 8, pins 1) p, all combined substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereuntdset my hand this 11th day of June, 1884.
BENJAMIN F. WILLIAMSON.
Witnesses:
O. P. JACOBS, GEORGE WELLS.
The arms when extended may be set by the
