UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEO VILLIAM CARPENTER, OF SALIDA, COLORADO.
WATCH-CASE.
JPECIPCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 322,680I dated July 2l, 1885.
Application filed A pril 1T, 1885.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Bc it known that I, WILLIAM CARPENTER, of Salida, county of Chaffee, Colorado, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vatches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain new. and useful improvements in watch-cases having dust-prooi'joints, and the object of my invention is to facilitate placing and adjusting the works in the case.
The invention consists in the combination` with awatch-case,ofa movement-holding band or ring and a link hinged to the case and to the said band or ring.
rlhe invention also consists in parts and details and combinations of the same, as herein shown and described.
Figure l is a face view of a watch provided with my improved case, the works being partly raised. Figs. 2 and 3 show sections of the watch with the works in different positions. Fig. i is a longitudinal sectional View of the watch closed.
The watch-case A has a screw-neck, B, on its face,on which neck the bezel C is screwed. The ring, casing, or band D for receiving the movement or works is hinged at its bottom edge to one end ot' a link, E, having the other end hinged to the case A at the base of the pendant F. The link E has a longitudinal slot, G, through which the winding-pin H of the works can pass. The pendant F has a neck, J, on its outer end,on which neck a leftliand screw-thread is cut, and on which neck a crown, K, can be screwed, from the inner end of which a tube, L, projects through the pendant, the said tube having a plate, M, on its inner end provided with a squared aperture, N, for receiving the squared windingpin H. In the tube L a plunger 0r piston, O, is arranged, which is pressed toward the inner end of the tube by a spiral spring, P, interposed between the plunger and the outer end of the said tube. A roun'd stem or plug, Q, fitting in the aperture N of the plate M projects from the said plunger. The works are held as shown in Fig. 2, or are swung over toward the pendant, as may be desired, and as the adjustment, dre., of the works may require.
To place and hold the worksin the case, the
(No model.)
works are raised and the link E swung down to permit the windingpin H to pass through the slot G- and into the squared apertures in the end plate,M, so that the said winding-pin can be turned by the crown K and tube L. The entering winding-pin H pushes back the plunger or piston C and compresses the spring P. When the works are swung up, the stem or plug Q follows the receding loose pin H and presses it into the works, thus preventing the pin H binding or being held in the apertured plate M and withdrawn from the movement. By hinging the works in the manner set forth a much longer pin, H, can be provided than in works hinged in cases in the usual manner, and as the pin H is longer the plate M gets a better grip on it.
As set l'orth above, the loose winding-pin always remains in the works, and is not withdrawn by the apertured plate M, which is of great value, as much trouble is caused by the pins H being held by the winding attachment in the pendant. The spring I presses the winding-crown K from the end of the pendant, and thus permits of turning the crown to the right or left for setting the hands without screwing said crown on the pendant. After winding the watch the crown K is turned to the left, and is thereby screwed on the pendant and forms an absolutely tight joint.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, with a watch-case,of a movement-holding band or ring connected with the case by a link hinged to the case and to the movement-holding ring or band, substantially as herein shown and described.
2.V The combination, with a watchcase, of a movement-holding band or ring and a link hinged to the case and to the said ring or band at the bottom edge of the same, substantially as herein shown and described.
The combination, with a watch-case, of a movement-holding band or ring and a slotted link hinged to the said band or ring and to the case at the pendant, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. rIhe combination, with the watcli-caseA and pendant F, of the tube L, secured to the crown K, and-of the spring I? in the ,tube L, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. The combination, with the watch-case A IOO und pendant F, of the tube L, secured to the l 7. The Combination, with the wutelrense A Io crown K, the plunger or piston O, and the l und the pendant Rhuving u Screw-neck J, of spring P in the 'cube L, Substantially as herein I the Screw-Crown K, J011e tube L, the plunger er shown and described. piston O, und the Spring I), substantially us 6. The combina-tien, with the wntelrense A herein shown und described. und pendant F, of the tube L, the plunger \\"'ILLL\.M CRPICN'IEIL or piston C), having the stein Q, und of the '\Vitnesses: spring l in the said tube, substantially us (L HENRY CLARK,
