Description

` 'f UNITED STATES PATENTOFFICE- THOMAS S. HUDSON, OF EAST CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
||v| PRovEM ENT IN INKSTANDS.
` u Speciicationforming part of Letters Patent No. 35,449, dated J une 3, 1862.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs S. HUDSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Cambridge, in thecounty of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful or Improved Inkstand for the use of travelers or others; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a top view, Fig. 2 an elevation,
` Vand Fig. 3 a vertical section, of it. Fig. 4 is a top view of its cap, Fig. 5 a top view of the cover of such cap, while Fig. 6 is a section of the confining-annulus.
The nature of my invention consists in an inkstand as constructed with a separate annulus, combined with a perforated vcap and cover in such manner as not only to enable the cover to be revolved within the annulus and on the cap, but -be forced down upon the cap by such annulus when screwed or moved downward relatively to the cap.
The body or ink-reservoir of the inkstand is shown atA in the drawings, it being provided with a neck, a, on which a perforated cap, b, is placed and cemented. This cap at its base is to be constructed with a male screw, c c, on which a milled ring or annulus, d, is to be screwed, the said annulus being made with a collar or flange, e, whichv is to overlap a ange, f, extending from the lower part of a perforated cover, g, which is placed on and extends around the cap b, as shown i'n the drawings. l A washer, h, of leather or some other suitable material, is placed within thecover g. Ten passages or holes, z' k, are made -eccentrically through the iuk-reservoirA. By rotating the cover g far enough the holei may be moved entirely away from'the hole k and the latter be covered. A" small annular lip, Z, is raised around the opening k and on the cap b, in order that the washer h, when pressed downward on such lip, may make a tight joint with it.
By partially unscrewing the annulus d I shall be able to freely revolve the cover g on the cap b; but when the annulus is screwed downward it will be caused to force the cover g toward the cap b in such manner as to press the washer closely on the lip Z.
I am aware that an inkstand has been made in most, if not all, respects substantially like mine, as above described, except that it had no screw-annulus separate from the cover, the latter being constructed so as to screw directly on the cap. In this inkstand, which has been the subject of a patent granted to Augustus P.
Grifting, the washer is liable, in consequence of the peculiar action of the screws and cover, to become often cut, worn, or crimpled more or less, or turned about within the cap in a manner to cause the hole of the washer not to properly correspond with that of the cap. It is very desirable that the washer should retain its thickness and position, otherwise leakage of ink out of the inkstand will be likely to ensue whenever it may be turned bottom upward, or other diiiiculties will result.
In my improved inkstand the cover is entirely independent of the devices by which it may be fastened down upon the cap, and can be revolved within the screw-annulus, while the latter may be stationary. After the hole -rmly upon the cap by simply screwing down the annulus.
In my improved inkstand there is little or no liability of either wear or displacement of the washer. l
Instead of applying the annulus d to the cap b by screws, as explained, what is termed a bayonet-connection77 lmay be substituted for such screws, provided the said bayonet-connection be so made that while the annulus may be revolved in one direction it shall be forced downward, so as to press the cover down upon the cap.
I claim as my invention- An inkstand as constructed with the separate annulus d, combined with the perforated cap b and cover g in manner and so to operate therewith, substantially as described;
THOS. S. HUDSON.
