PIPE WRENCH AND CUTTER. No. 364,090. Patented May 31, 1887. I
lliiilllllllllL NITED ST TES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM E. CLAYTON, OF HUNTINGTON, INDIANA.
PlPE WRENCH AND CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,090, dated May 31, 1887.
Application filed March 23, 1887. Serial No. 232,072. (No model.)
To aZZ whom. it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. CLAYTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Huntington, in the county of Huntington and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe WVrenchcs and Cutters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side view of my improved pipe wrench and cutter, showing it used as a wrench. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the device used as a pipe-cutter. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View of the device shown in Fig. 1,and Fig. 4 isa similar view of the device shown in Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invent-ion has relation to combined pipe wrenches and cutters; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of such a tool having removable jaws, whereby the tool maybe converted into apipe wrench or cutter, as desired, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the handle of the tool, which is formed in the shape of a long box having a rod, 2,journaled in the end of the handle and provided with a suitable cross-handle, 3, at that end, while the inner screw-threaded end, 4, of the rod tits and turnsin a female threaded perforation, 5, in a cross-piece, 6, near thein- -ner end of the handle.
The inner endof the handle is formed with two lips or side pieces, 7, having cross-heads 8 at their ends, and a wedge-shaped block, 9, slides between these lips, having the end of the screw-threaded rod journaled in the center ofits base and suitablysecured in the same.
The jaws 10 of the wrench or cutter are formed with outwardly-curved edges 11 upon their innerportions, 12, the sides of the wedgeshaped block bearing against the said curved edges, and the jaws are pivoted upon removable bolts or pins 13, passing through the ends of the cross-heads and through the jaws.
shaped block forward between the inner ends of the jaws, spreading the said ends.
The jaws of the cutter have the same outwardly-curved inner ends as the jaws of the wrench, and are pivoted in the same manner;
but the outer end, 15, of one of the jaws is curved inward and has a cutter-disk, 16, journaled in its slotted or bifurcated end, while the other jaw has its end bifurcated and widely spread and thereupon hooked inward, as shown at 17, this bifurcated end serving to hold the pipe to be out, while the cutter-disk of the other jaw may be carried around the pipe, cutting into the same.
It will be seen that the cutter-disk may be fed into the pipe as it cuts its way into the same by screwing the wedge-shaped'blocktforward, spreading the inner diverging ends of thejaws. It will also be seen that by having the diverging inner ends of the jaws bearing against the sides of the wedge-shaped block the wrench or cutter may be fitted to different sizes of pipes, and a considerable grip may be obtained upon the pipe by the combined action of the screw and the wedge.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In a pipe wrench and cutter, the combination of a handle having two lips or side pieces at its inner end formed with cross-heads, a rod journaled longitudinally in the handle and having its inner screw threaded end fitted and turning in a threaded perforation in the handle and provided with a wedgeshaped block at its inner end sliding between the lips or side pieces, and two jaws pivoted upon pins between the ends of the cross-heads and having their inner diverging ends bearing with their edges against the sides of the wedge shaped block, as and for' the purpose shown and set forth.
2. In a pipe-cutter, the combination of a handle having two lips or sidepieees formed at its inner end provided with cross-heads at their ends, a rod *journaled longitudinally in the handle and having its inner screw-threaded end fitted and turningin a screw-threaded perforation in the handle, a wedge-shaped block having the inner end of the screw-threaded rod journaled in its base 'and sliding between the lips, a jaw pivoted upon a bolt between one end of the cross-heads and formed with an outwardly-curved inner end and with an inwardly-bent outer end having a cutterdisk journaled in its bifurcated end, and a
