(No Model.) I
E. W. TAYLOR.
ELECTRIC DOOR ALARM.
No. 416,971. Patented Dec. 10, 1889.
' Fly. 2. 12' 4. 4 A? J Wi -F MM'WP,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDIVIN IV. TAYLOR, OF CHARLOTTETOIYN, PRINCE EDIVARD ISLAND, CANADA.
ELECTRIC DOOR-ALARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,971, dated December 10, 1889.
' Application filed March 23, 1889. Serial No. 304,466. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN W. TAYLOR, of Charlottetown, in the Province of Prince Edward Island and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Electric Door- Alarm, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a door-lock to which my improvement has been applied, the cover of the lock being removed to show the interior. Fig. 2 is'a longitudinal section of the yielding electrical contact. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modified arrangement of the contact. Fig. et shows longitudinal and transverse sections of the view in Fig. 3, and
Figs. 5 and 6 represent smaller contacts for small locks.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of my invention is to provide an attachment for door locks and latches by means of which an electric circuit will be completed when the lock or latch boltis withdrawn.
My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
The insulating-block A shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is attached to the side of the lock-casing B, in any convenient way. The said insulating-block is provided with a chamber a,
in which is inserted a spiral spring b, the inner end of which is connected with a wire 0, which extends through the block and through the lock-casing B, the said wire being provided with an insulated covering d, which prevents it from forming an electrical contact with the casing B. In the present case the contact-spring b is arranged in thepath of the latch-bolt C, and the said latch-bolt is connected directly with the remaining circuitwire 6, so that when the latch-bolt is withdrawn and the end of the boltstrikes the contact-spring b the current will flow from the battery through the wire 6, latch-bolt C, the contact-spring b, the wire 0, and the alarm or indicating apparatus connected in the circuit of the battery.
\Vhen it is inconvenient to apply the contact-spring Z) in the manner described, the wire 0 may be taken out through the side of the insulating-block A, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 0. When the latch-bolt 0 presents no suitable surface for contact with the spring I), the said bolt may be provided with a stud f, inserted in the side thereof and arranged to contact with the spring Z) when the said latch-bolt is withdrawn. In this case the other electrical connection may be effected by placing the wire 6 underneath the plate of the look, so as to be clamped against the edge of the door by one of the screws employed in fastening the lock in the door, as shown in Fig. 3.
Vith very small locks the forms shown in Figs. 5 and 6 may be employed.
In many modern locks the bolt C has a larger surface at the point where f is inserted and needs no stud.
If the improvement is applied to safes, either at the bolts or looks, it will be suflicient for one Wire to enter the safe. The other can connect with any part of the outside of the safe.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the lock-casing and bolt or latch, of an insulated spiral spring extending in the direction of the length of the bolt or latch and in the path thereof, and electric connections, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the lock-casing and its bolt or latch, of a chambered block of insulating material, a spiral contact-spring projecting from said chamber in the direction of the length of the latch or bolt and in the path thereof, and the electrical connections, substantially as set forth.
R. The combination, with the bolt C, of the stud f, the chambered insulating-block A, the contact-spring b, and the electric connections, substantially as specified.
, EDWIN \V. TAYLOR.
