EDGE PROTECTOR FOR GARMENTS.
(Application led Sept. 18, 1899.) (No Model.)
*Ik lia w c mums mens co, maro-.umm wAsHmomn n c AARON M. W'EBER, OF OSI-IKOSII, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO CHRISTOPHER E. HERTLEIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
EDGE-PROTECTOR4 FOR GARIVINTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 638,193,1dated. November 28, 1899. Application filed September 18, 1899. Serial No. 730,883. (No model.)
To LZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON MNVEBER, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Oshkosh, in the county of Winnebago, State of VVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Edge-Protectors for Garments, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement in edge-protectors for skirts or other garments, and especially to that class in which a brush edge is provided at the bottom to receive the Wear from the ground or door along which the garment is dragged.
The object of the invention is to provide a facing with a brush edge-i'. e., an edge cornposed of a series of folded bunches, which are so incorporated with the facing as to form a projecting ridge or cord around the bottom of the facing-this being accomplished by winding the warp-threads around the folded bunches below the fold of the latter, thus causing said bunches at the fold to bulge,
forming, practically, a ridge around the lower part of said facing.
I do not herein claim a skirt-protector consisting of a head and a brush, said head being formed of weft and warp threads and said brush being formed of U -shaped pieces looped through the bends of the weft at one selvage and connected by separate binding-threads adjacent the bends of the weft, nor do I herein claim an edge-protector consisting of a head and a brush, said head being formed of weft and warp threads and said brush being formed of tufts secured to the Wefts by binding warpthreads to form a projecting ridge or cordon the protector, as such subject-matter is contained in my Patent No. 633,496, granted September 19, 1899.
The present invention consists in the matters hereinafter described and referred to in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a piece of fabric constructed in accordance Withmy invention, the relation of the parts being shown in rather exaggerated form; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of Fig. l.
In the drawings, A represents the body of the binding or facing Vwoven in a manner known in the art and composed of the continuous weft or upright threads a and the warp or horizontal threads b. The bunches or tufts c are laid upon the facing so that their bights extend above the bights in the continuous weft, being secured to the facing by the Warpthreads d, which Warp-threads may be a part of the regular warp of the fabric or may be additional threads, and as herein shown the bights in the folded bunches are of sufficient width to bridge a bight in the continuous weft. Quite a large ridge or projecting cord B is formed upon the bottom of the facing adjacent the upper edge of the brush part, the warp-threads which hold the bights of the folded bunches or tufts in place passing through the bights of the weft-thread andalternately over and under the adjacent one side of the bight of the weft-thread and one side of the bight of the bunch or tuft.
Various modications and changes in the construction of the protector may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters l. An edge-protector for garments comprising a facing or heading formed of warpthreads, and a continuous weft, and a brush formed of U-shaped pieces secured upon the bights of the weft at one selvage by bindingthreads adjacent the bights of the weft; substantially as described.
2. An edge-protector for garments comprising a facing or heading formed of Warpthreads and a continuous weft and tufts laid upon the facing and having their bights eX- tending above the bights in thelweft-threads, and secured by warp-threads adjacent the bights of the tufts, whereby a projecting ridge or cord s formed on the protector; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AARON M. WEBER.
