To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, JAMES S. DYETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rome, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Folding Cot or Bed, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in cots having folding ends; and the objects of my improvement are, first, to provide a connection between the ends and body of the cot such that the ends can be closed or folded up within the cot, leaving no projections to be broken in shipment; second, to secure a firm and stable connection between the ends and body of the cot when in use; third, to secure ease and rapidity in folding, and, fourth, to minimize the space occupied by the cot when not in use. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of myimproved cot. Fig. 2 is a bottom view as it appears when opened. Fig. 3 is a bottom view as it appears when closed. Fig. 4 is a plan View of the corner-lock, and Fig. 4: is an elevation of the same. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a modification of the corner-lock, and Fig. 5 is an elevation of the same. Fig. 6 is a detailed view of one of the corners. Fig. 7 is across-section along the line X X, Figs. 1 and 2, of the side piece A, showing a suitable form where the cot is constructed of iron or other metal. Fig. 8 is a modification of this last-mentioned crosssection suitable where the cot is constructed of wood.

Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

A A are the side pieces of the cot.

B B are the corner-posts, rigidly coupled together at each end.

E E are diagonal braces connected with the posts B B and the side pieces A A by means of pivots G G and H H, upon which pivots as centers the said braces swing.

The corner-lock is attached to the inner side of the side piece A by the pivot N, upon which pivot it turns. The lug F by engaging the side piece A limits the angular distance through which the lock is free to turn about the pivot N. The corner-lock clasps the end post B, which slides back and forth within its containing portions. Each side piece A has a groove or recess K running longitudinally along its inner side.

The mode of operating this cot is as follows: When the same is in use, the various parts are substantially in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. To close or fold the cot, the end piece is pushed downward, so that the post B slides within the containing portions of the cornerlock. The look as a whole turns about the pivot N, so that the lug F travels along an are shown by the dotted line Y. The brace E swings about the pivot H as a center, so that the pivot G describes an are shown by the dotted line Z. The end piece is thus made to assume a position underneath the body of the cot, with the posts B B resting in the grooves or recesses K K, as shown in Fig. 3.

As is obvious, my invention can be adapted to the employment of corner-posts having any convenient form of cross-section.

What Iclaim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A folding cot or bed comprising cornerposts and side pieces, corner-locks clasping the corner-posts, pivots connecting the locks with the side pieces, lugs projecting from the corner-locks and engaging the side pieces, braces between the corner posts and side pieces, pivots connecting the braces with the corner-posts and side pieces, and grooves or recesses running along the lower inner sides of the side pieces, substantially as described.

2. A folding cot or bed comprising cornerposts and side pieces, corner-locks clasping the corner-posts, pivots connecting the looks with the side pieces, lugs projecting from the corner-locks and engaging the. side pieces, braces between the corner posts and side pieces, and pivots connecting the braces with the cornerposts and side pieces, substantially as described.
