Description

@einen tatrs` @anni @ffice MCCLINTOCK YOUNG, 0F I FREDERICK, MARYLAND. Leiters Patent No. 67,011, dated July 23, 1867.
IMPROVED KNIFE-SHARPENER.
tlge Sagitta rentra tu in ilus Etnias 33am ma mating glatt at tige same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, McCLlNToGK YOUNG, of Frederick, inthe county of Frederick, and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife-Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making a part of this specification, in whichi Figure 1 represents the knife-Sharpener in full.
,Figure 2 represents a section through the same.
Figure 3 represents an end view; and
Figures 4 and 5,' portions of the interior of the Sharpener not clearly seen in the section.
Similar letters of reference where they occur in the separate figures denote like parts in all the drawings.
My 'invention consists in a'knifc-sharpener in which three common tiles are arranged to form the abrading surface, and which L'files are made adjustable in the handle or stock, so that as they become worn or illed up they may be raised, lowered, or turned around to present new surfaces or be removed and replaced by others at small cost, thus making a very enduring knife-Sharpener.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings. l
A represents astockpr handle', which may be of Wood, or metal, or parts of each. On one ond of this handle is arranged a metallic head,`B, for holding the files- C, said handle being chambered or bored out, as shown by dotted linesiin ig. 2, so that the files may extend far down into it. The metallic head B is composed mainly of a circular end piece, a, and a socket, b, for setting over the end of the handle or stock A. Within the socket portion b there is a circular plate, c, through which openings, d, iig. 5, are made to allow the files to pass through and be gnidedand held by. Above the plate c, and, under the end piece a, there are bearingpieces ef, through one of which, e, a. set-screw, z', extending to the ouside of the socket, passes, its point taking against ejem-plate or follower, g, which is pressed against thefiles and holds them firmly in the stock or handle. By loosening the screw z' thefiles can be'raised, lowered, or turned around tochange the surfaces against which the knife is drawn to shapen it. The files are set at an angle in the handle, as shown in figs. l and 2, so as to form a fork or crotch, through which the edge of the knife is drawn, there being one file edge on one sido or two on the other,when 4three only are used. More 'than three can be used, and two may be so inclined and crossed as to serve the purpose; but I prefer to use three, as shown, and ordinary three-cornered tiles, though round or fiat ones may be sed. I use files for the purpose, because it is the cheapest form in which that kind and quality of abradingor reducing surfaces can be got. The Obliquity or inclination of the files may be adjusted so as to touch and take oii more or less of the sides of the knife at its edge as may be preferred.
Having thus fully .described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I A knife-Sharpener in which tiles are used for the abradlng or reducing surfaces, and which tiles are adjusty able therein, so as to present new surfaces when the others are Worn out or become clogged, substantially as described.
McCLINTOGK YOUNG.
