PATENT OFFICE.
BACK FOR PIANOS OR OTHER INSTRUMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,268, dated April 11, 1905.
Application filed October 10, 1904- Serial No. 227,865.
To (ti/Z whom it nuty-omwern:
Be it known that I, J ULIUs BREOKWOLDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dolgeville, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented new and useful Im-- provements in Backs for Pianos or other Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a back for pianos and the like, and by means of this invention a free emission of sound or liberation of tone is attained with powerful effect and brilliancy.
This invention is set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a face view of a back embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a section along a: m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section along y 3 Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section along 2 .2, Fig. 1.
This piano-back is shown comprising hollow posts a. These hollow posts are used for stanchions. The back is paneled orhas sounding-boards or sections 6 in each space between the posts. The main sounding board or sounding-board proper, over which the strings are stretched and which reinforces their vibration, is glued onto the back or lining of the back. From said hollow posts and from the confined space resulting when the sounding-board is glued into place the tone is found to be liberated with powerful effect and brilliancy. The sections 7) between the posts are shown barred or ribbed, as at Z). The sounding-board is shown at c. It can also be noted that by putting sounding-boards between the stanchions the regular sounding-board will be protected from dampness or atmospheric influence, at any rate to a large extent.
hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A piano-back comprising hollow posts. having their perforations extended entirely therethrough and communicating at each end with the outer atmosphere.
2. A back for pianos and other instruments, comprising stanchions having perforations extended entirely therethrough and communicating with the outer air, sounding-boards between the stanchions, and a regular sounding-board, substantially as described.
A piano-back comprising hollow posts regularly spaced apart, and having the openings thereof terminally communicating with the outer air, and sounding-board sections closing the spaces between the posts and provided with longitudinal ribs.
L. A piano-back comprising hollow posts regularly spaced apart, and having the openings thereof terminally communicating with the outer air, sounding-board sections, and a main sounding-board secured to the rear side of the back.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JULIUS BREGKWVOLDT.
