PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAVE CLUTHE, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
BARREL-HEAD PLAN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 791,537, dated. June 6, 1905.
Application filed December 27, 1904.. Serial No- 238,361.
I0 all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GUs'rAvn OLUTHE, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Head Planers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is a planer for rapidly removing the impressed stamps from and planing off the top of barrel-heads.
The invention will be described first in connection with the accompanying drawings and then will be specifically pointed .out in the claims. I
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a barrel and of a planer embodying my invention. Fig. 2 isan enlarged plan view of the knife-disk with the knives adjusted thereon. Fig. 3. is a sectional view of the same, taken upon line w w of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the switch for turning the current on and off in the motor.
Referring to the parts, motor A is an ordi- It is provided with handles a a, secured to diametrically opposite To the upper part of the housing is attached a bracket a c of the slots 0 for receiving a coiled spring B for suspending the motor from the ceiling of a room. To the shaft a of the motor knife-disk C is attached by means of a centrally-screw-threaded socket c, which engages the screw-threaded end of the shaft a DiskG has its lower external edges 0 rounded off. In the disk are radial slots 0 having beveled edges 0 Within the radial slots are located knives D. Knives D have slots d d to receive screws 6 e to secure the knives to the beveled edges The cutting edges d of the knives D project beyond the lower face of the disk C. The amount of extension beyond the disk 0 increases toward the circumference thereof. The amount the knife projects beyond the face of the disk 0 may be adjusted,
by means of the slots d d" and screws e e, to make allowance for the wearing away of the knives in use.
Upon the side of the housing a beneath handle a, is located a switch F. It is placed in this position so that the operator may throw it readily with his finger while still holding the motor by the handles a a.
Barrel-heads, especially those barrels which have been used for liquors, such as whisky, have the brands cut into the wood. It is my purpose to remove these indentations quickly and then to plane off the whole head of the barrel. The indentations are removed in the following manner: By grasping the handles a a of the motor and tilting it so that the disk 0 stands at an angle to the barrel-head the outer edges of the knives D may be made to take a comparatively deep cut to remove the stamp or brand. 1 Then the motor is changed in position so that the face of the disk stands parallel to the barrel-head. Then the disks mayv be guided over the barrel-head to quickly level it ofi. The speed of the motor being rapid, this process may be performed in a short while. The operator then throws the switch to turn off the current and, stopping the motor, releases the motor, when the spring B will suspend itslightly above the barrel, which is put aside and a fresh barrel placed in position quickly to be operated upon.
What I claim is A planer consisting of an electrical motor having handles for guiding it, a knife-disk secured to the end of the motor-shaft, said disk being rounded upon its edge, and having a series of radial slots, knife-blades secured in the slots and projecting beyond the face of the disk, the amount of projection increasing toward the circumference thereof.
