have inverted certain new and useful Im-- prcvements in Devices for Simultaneously Controlling the Spark and Throttle of an Internal-Combustion Engine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to internal combustion engines in which provision is made for advancing the spark at the same time that the throttle is opened and vice versa. If the rate of spark advance is the same as the rate of throttle openin the result is satisfactory for full load an for. no load, but not for intermediate loads. From no load to half-load the spark is not advanced enough to properly ignite the charge: the ignition being too late and the charge too great. This causes a loss in efiiciency, a considerable portion of the heat being wasted in the exhaust.
The resent invention, which overcomes this di culty, consists in a combination of a spark-control comprising a lever, and a throttle mechanism including a lever, with a single operating lever, whereby the spark lever is given a motion proportionate .to the sine and the throttle lever to the versed sine of the angle through which the o erating lever is moved to and fro. The resu t is that While the controlling lever is moved at a uniform speed, yet during the first half of its movement the spark advances rapidly, but the throttle opens slowly: the rate of speed of the spark lever decreasing toward the end of the movement and that of the throttle increasing. 'ment relieves the operator of all mental eifort in regulating the spark with reference to the throttle: the proper adjustment being obtained automatically.

In the drawing the t rottleis represented as closed and the s ark retarded. On moving the lever 11 to t cleft, the arm 9 passing to the midway dotted line position 0 causes the spark-control lever 5 to move to the dotted line position a; while the arm 7, moving to the position b and describing the same angular movement as the arm 9, causes the throttle lever 4 to move only to the dotted line osition 'b.' It will be noted that during t iis first half of the movement of thelever 11 the angular fnovement of the lever 5 is much greater than that of the lever 4. But during the latterhalf of the total stroke of the operating lever, the lever 5 travels only from a to 0, while the lever 4 moves from b to b ,a much greater distance. This result is due to the fact that the rock-arms 7 and 9 stand substantially at right angles to each other, and the arm. 9 is nearly per endicular to the rod 10 at the beginning o the stroke, while the arm 7 is nearly in line with its rod 6. The consequence isthat the angular movement imparted to the lever 5 varies with the sine of the angle through which the arm 9 moves,

In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, have described the principle of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now considerv to re resent the best embodiment thereof; but i I esire to have it understood that theappa ratus shown is only illustrative, and that the invention can be carried out b other means. What I claim as new, and esire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is;-
