Be it known that we, \VILLIAM RUrUs Bnnn'rs and lVILLIAM PARKS GUNN, citizens of the United States, residing at Sherman, in the county of Grayson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I-Iamc and Trace Connectors; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in hame and trace connectors.

The object of the invention is to provide a strong, durable and improved pivoted or jointed connection between the end of a trace attachment and the hame.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described r and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a hame and the end of a trace showing the application of the invention thereto; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a modified form of the connection. Fig. at is a detail perspective view of the hame engaging plate shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing; and Fig. 5 is a modified form of the hame engaging plate showing the same provided with loops or eyes instead of hooks to engage the hame attaching plate.

Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, 1 denotes the attachment comprising a plate 2 one end of which is recessed on one side and provided with a centrally-disposed pivot hole, said recessed end of the plate forming a seat or bearing 3 for the trace attachment hereinafter described, the opposite ends of the shoulder 3 forming stops 3 and 3 to limit the upward and downward movement of the trace attachment, to be described. This shoulder 3 is preferably curved, for a purpose to be described. On the opposite end of the plate 2 is formed a series of lugs 4: spaced apart and arranged parallel with each other, said lugs having formed therein alined verticallydisposed bolt holes 5. The lugs l are adapted to be adjustably engaged between the tapered lugs 6 of a hame attaching plate 7 which is secured to the hame in any suitable manner. Through the apertures in the lugs 6 and the apertures in the lugs e is adapted to be inserted a fastening bolt 8 whereby the plate 2 is detachably connected with the hame. By providing the spaced lugs of the hame attaching plate and the plate 2 of the connector, the latter may be adjustably secured to the hame.

Pivotally connected to the plate 2 is a trace attachment consisting of a bail 9 having a laterally-projecting circular head 10 in which is formed a centrally-disposed hole 12. The head 10 is adapted to fit in the seat 3 in the plate 2 and pivotally connected thereto by a bolt or rivet 13 which is inserted through the hole in the seat 3 and through the hole 12 in the head 10 the bail 9 on its upper or downward movement engages the steps 3 or 3 and its movement is limited to prevent its swinging beyond a predetermined point in either direction and thereby holding it always in position ready for attachment and preventing tangling thereof with the other parts of the harness. The recess 3 is of a depth equal to the thickness of the head 10, which is to be seated therein to provide flat comparatively smooth outer faces, and by means of which the head 10 is protected against engagement with obstructions, and which prevents said head from coming in contact with and marring other objects.

In the ends of the bail 9 are formed alined apertures through which is inserted a trace attaching bolt 14. having arranged thereon a bearing sleeve 15 which is adapted to be engaged by a metal clip 16 secured to the end of the trace as shown, thereby pivotally attaching the end of the trace to the bail of the connector.

In Figs. 3 and at of the drawings is shown a slightly modified form of the hame attachment. said attachment consisting of an apertured plate 17 on one end of which is formed parallel laterally-projecting hooks 18 which are adapted to be engaged with the hame attaching plate 19, said plate being here shown as provided with a series of hook-engaging apertures 20 and a centrallydisposed integrallyformed bar 21. By providing a series of hook-engaging apertures 20, the hooks 18 and the plate 17 may be adjustably connected. to the hame. The aperturcd end of the plate 17 is adapted to be connected by a pivot bolt or rivet 22 with the bail 23 of a trace attachment, said attachment being the same as shown and described in connection with Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.

While We have shown the plate 17 as being provided with spaced hooks to engage the bar 21 of the hame fastening plate, it is obvious that the plate 17 may be provided with parallel eyes or loops 2%. as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new is A hame and trace connector comprising a plate having one end recessed on one face thereof with an aperture formed in said recessed portion and with a curved shoulder formed at the inner end of said recess, the

ends of said shoulder forming stops, a bail shaped member having a circular apertured ear projecting from the center thereof for pivotal connection with said recessed portion, and a bolt extending through the ends of said bail and having a sleeve mounted thereon between said ends, and means carried by said plate for engagement with a hame.
