comnmnn 'soox AND GAMER.-
Specincation of letters Patent.
Application filed larch 8, 1909. Serial No. 482,025.
' To all whom it 'nw/y concern:
i ers, and its object is to Be itknown that I, LLoYo O. GITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Combined Sock and Garter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
. The invention relates to garment fastenrovide anew and improved combined soc and garter, arranged to insure correct support of the sock on the wearers leg, and to allow ready closing and opening of the garter, the latter being for this purpose permanently attached to extension flaps formed integrally on the upper endof the sock at the sides thereof.
, practical embodiment of the invention "is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in
which similar characters of reference indicate'corresponding parts in both views.
Figure l is a perspective of the improvement; and Fig. is an enlarged sectional plan view of the fastening device for the overlapping ends of the garter.
The sock A, knitted or otherwise produced in the usual manner, is provided at its upper end and at the sides thereof with integral, upwardly-extending flaps A, to the terminals of which is permanently secured the elastic band B of a garter, adapted to encircle the leg above the calf thereof, as indicated in ig. 1, the elastic band B being open at the front and provided at the ends with a fastening device for closin the garter. The fastening device is pre erably of the ball and socket or other type, as indicated in the drawings, that is, one end of the band B is provided with a socket D and the l other end is provided with a number of rangement described, the band B may be firmly engaged with the leg of the wearer,
Patented Dec. '7, 1909.
spaced balls or heads D, adapted to be en gaged by the socket D. Thus by the ar and the band readily fits legs of different sizes.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that the sock is correctly supported at its upper end by the use of the garter, which readily may be closed or opened at the front, to allow of conveniently placing the sock in position on the leg or removing it therefrom.
It will also be noticed that by the use of the extension flaps A on the upper end of a normal sock A, the band B is brought sufficiently high up on the calf of the leg to cause the band B to encircle the leg above a v the calf a short distance below the knee, thus properly supporting the sock with the greatest comfort .to the wearer.
It will thus be seen that. by the employment of the flaps, the garter is permitted to encircle the leg at the proper oint without making the sock anylonger 1; an now generally made.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent:
A sock provided at the sides of itsupper edge with upwardly-extending, integral and diametrically opposite flaps, an elastic band secured to the terminals of the said flaps,
and a closing device for closing the overlap ing ends of the said band at a pointin ront of the said flaps.
In testimony, whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
Witnesses:
THEO. G. Hos'rna, JOHN P. DAVIS.
