To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE Hanna CARTER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in the town of Richmond Hill, county of Queens, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Cigarette-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

My invention relates to improvements in portable manually operated apparatus for forming cigarettes, and is particularly adapted for use in connection with granulated tobacco, although it may also be used with long or curly tobacco.

The objects of my improvement are to provide a simple, inexpensive device by which a cigarette may be easily formed in any desired shape, and wherein the tube may, if desired, be closed in at the ends and the tobacco be firmly and compactly held in the tube.

A further object of my invent-ion is to avoid the waste of tobacco in forming the cigarette, as well as to insure a uniformity in size of the product.

This and other objects, which will appear in the following description, I attain by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein,

Fig. 2 is an elevation of the mold having a paper thereon contained within the shield, in position to be filled. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a 1011- gitudinal section taken through the body of the mold and shield, and illustrates the employment of a separable abutment to remove the mold and fill the tube. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the shield and Fig. 6 is a top view thereof. Figs. 7, 8, and 9 are detail views of a combined rammer and removable closing device.

My apparatus is composed of a mold l, which at its upper end has a funnel, 2, through which tobacco is inserted into the mold, and which has an elongated tubular portion, 3, provided with a longitudinal slot, 4, which is enlarged at the upper end, 5. Around the slotted tube, 4, is passed a cigarette paper, 6, which may be pasted together upon the body of the tube, so as to fit tightly thereon. Cigarette papers are supplied with gum at one side, and this I find well adapted for use with my apparatus. The lower part of the paper, which is at the left of Fig. 1, should project slightly beyond the tube, as illustrated, and this projecting part is bent or crimped inwardly to hold the tobacco in the cigarette when it is removed.

In connection with the mold, 1, I employ a shield 7, which has a semi-circular body portion, 8, of a shape to fit the contour of the mold and at its lower end is provided with a bottom, 9, which forms a shelf for the mold to rest upon when it is placed within the shield. Said shield, at its upper end, is formed with a mold holding ring, 15. The shelf, 9, is of a size somewhat larger than the mold, and at its front may have a flange formed with an indentation, 10, for a purpose to be described. In connection with the said mold and shield, I also employ a separate rammer, 11, to compact the tobacco within the mold. This is made round, and at its upper end is provided with a collar, forming ears, 12, on each side thereof, adapted to embrace the shield, and it has projecting horizontally therefrom between the said ears a flatabutment, 18, connected to the rammer by a contracted neck, 14.

In the operation of my device a cigarette paper is secured snugly about the slotted mold tube and tucked in at the lower end, and the mold is then placed within the shield with its slotted portion next to the body of the shield to protect the paper opposite the slot. The rammer may then be grasped by the right hand and holding the shield and mold in the left hand, and the bag of tobacco in the right hand, a small amount of tobacco may be poured in the funnel and the rammer used to compact the same, and this continued until the paper has a sufiicient amount of tobacco within it. The tube is then reversed in position without removing the same, so that its slotted portion is opposite the open ortion of the shield. The abutment, 18, is tlien passed within the enlarged end, 5, of the slot, 4, and the body of the rammer rests upon the indentation, 10. The abutment is then pulled down tightly upon the body of the tobacco and paper, which is permitted by the entrance of its contracted neck, 14, within the slot, 4. When this is in contact with the tobacco it is firmly held by the left hand and the mold grasped by the funnel and easily drawn out,

leaving the tobacco contained Within the paper tube. The abutment, 13 Will then be tightly pressed against the upper part of the cigarette and may be used, if desired, to assist in removing the same from the shield.

The cigarette when Withdrawn will be found to have the tobacco evenly contained throughout its body, and firmly and coinpactly held therein, and prevented at one end from dropping out by the tucked-in portion.

The other end, may if desired, be tucked in likewise, or the cigarette ma y beimmediately smoked.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A portable cigarette maker comprising a slotted mold, a semicircular shield, reversible upon the mold, adapted to cover the slot When the mold isbeing filled and to uncover it after it is filled,- a removable rammer and an abutment adapted to extend within the slot in the mold and retain the cigarette While the mold is withdrawn, substantially as described. l

2.
