To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, WILLIAM FLET'I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hyde Park, Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stub-Numberers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to numbering devices and particularly to a rotary device in which a plurality of numbering heads are arranged so as to permit a circumferential adjustment to allow for any desired combination of heads and relative spacings.
As illustrative of my invention, I have set forth an embodiment thereof in the form of a stub numbering device for railroad tickets, coupons, and the like, adapted to be used with a rotary press and in the production of mileage or coupons printed and numbered thereon. In work of this sort much adaptability is required on account of the variety of tickets called for, the number of coupons carried by the stubs, or the arrangement of mileage. The number of stubs on a ticket or mileage also vary and the location of the numbers on each stub may be different, requiring careful adjustment to secure proper registry of the parts. In the printing of these various forms, the numbering systems involve complicated problems, and when these tickets are to be produced ra idly and in quantities, the ad ustment of the heads must needs be capable of almost infinite variety.
The principles of my invention will be more fully disclosed in the specification which follows, in which the above mentioned embodiment is described and discussed in connection with the drawings which form a part thereof, and which illustrate the stub numbering device. Throughout these drawings and the specification like reference numerals are used to indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an end view of a triple numbering device, Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, Fig. 3 is an end view of a double device, Fig.4 is a detail of one of the head receiving sockets, and Fig. 5 is a central section of a socket and a portion of supporting sleeve.

screws 3 in threaded holes 4, so that it will rotate with said shaft during its intermittent action. At each end, the sleeve 1 is provided with an overhanging flange 5 beveled on its inner edge.
6 are numbering head holders comprising a base 7 curved on its lower face to fit the cylindrical surface of the sleeve 1 and having a flat upper surface.
8 are side walls formed on the base 7, and forming therewith a socket or trough open at both ends and on top.
9 are plates adapted to be clamped against the open ends of said socket by screws 10 and screw bolts 11. The plates 9 rise slightly above the base 7, so as to overlap the open ends of the socket and are extended below the bottom of said base and formed with a segmental beveled flange 12 adapted to engage the fiange 5 011 the sleeve 1.
13 is a numbering head shown at the upper parts of Figs. 1 and 2, and indicated by dot-ted lines in the other part of Fig. 1, and in Fig. 3.
The walls 8 of the socket are spaced apart so as to fit closely the sides of the numbering heads 13, and are of just sufficient length to expose the ends of said head to the upper portion of the plates 9 which rise above the base 7. It will, therefore, be seen that by slacking the screws 10 the holders 6 may be slid about the surface of the sleeve 1 to any desired position where they may be clamped firmly in place by tightening the set screws which at the same time tends to grip the numbering head Within the socket. This permits the removal of the heads if necessary to verify or correct the adjustment of the numbering mechanism. During this adjustment of the holder 6 the flange 12 remains in contact with the flange 5 and prevents the holder 6 from dropping from the sleeve 1.
Tickets and mileages vary in the number of stubs according to the systems of the various railroads, and I can, therefore, provide for any number of stubs, or stubs of different size, and also for the positioning of numbers on different parts of the stubs.
As the holders 6 are readily removable and relatively adjustable it is possible to quickly provide for any arrangement desired, and the numbering of the stubs of mileages or coupons of any number, or tickets of any length, or mileages and tickets ifvith any number of stubs, may be provided The form of my holders and the clamping means therefor may obviously be modified and varied in various manners, all Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I therefore claim, and desire to se cure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A stub numberer comprising a cylindrical sleeve having an overhanging flange about each end, an open ended numbering head holder adapted to bear against the outer surface of said sleeve, a plate on each end of said holder, a flange on the bottom of said plate and adapted to engage said first named flange and means for adjusting said plates to grip said sleeve and clamp a numbering head Within said holder.
2. A stub numberer comprising a cylindrical sleeve having an overhanging beveled flange about each end, an open ended numbering head holder adapted to bear against the outer surface of said sleeve, a plate on each end of said holder, a beveled flange on the bottom of said plate and adapted to engage said first named flange and means for adjusting one of said plates to grip said sleeve.
8. A stub numberer comprising a cylindrical sleeve having an overhanging flange about each end, an open ended numbering head holder, comprising a base curved on its bottom to fit said sleeve and side Walls of slightly less length than a numbering head, a plate on each end of said holder, a flange on the bottom of said plate and adapted to engage said first named flange and means for adjusting one of said plates to grip said sleeve, and clamp a numbering head Within said holder.
