A A CORPORATION OEPENNSYLVANIA.
To all whom "it cnccm.'
Be it knowhthat I, ERNEST RICHARDSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beaver Falls, in thecounty of Beaver and f typewhich can be subjected to the heat of an enamel burning furnace without losing 1 its origina'lzshape.
Another object is to provide aicompartment of the. type specified which can be A made without unduly straining the metal and which' can be sold at a comparatively lowl price.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l vis a lperspective View of a compartment embodying all the features of my invention; Fig. 2', a perspective view of the brace ortie for the upper forward edge of the compartment; F ig. 3,v a verticalfsed tion taken on the line 3*3, Fig. 4; Fig. 4,
a horizontal section'on the line 4-4, Fig. 3; and Fig.- 5, a perspective view of Aone of the 'external anglezpiecesor braces.
'My improved compartment. has the bottom l and the sides 2 integral and made vof ductile sheet-metal, the sides standing at- Vright angles to the Vbottom 'and joining the bottom, as shown at 3, by bending the metal "so that the cross-section appears as a part of a circle or other curved figure. The front edges of the bottom and sides are provided with the continuous flange 4 turned out- :the integral outwardly-turtle -Wardly from the bottom and sides so 'as to stiien them and prevent them from sagging and warping during the burning of the enamel, with which they are coated. The upper' edgeso the sides 2 are rovidedwith d) flanges 5 for a similar ur ose.
-The bac i6 1s made of ductilesheet metal welded or otherwise secured to the rear edges of the bottom'and sides and has its upper edge turned rearwardly to form the s`t1 The-sides 2 are provided with the shelf supports 8 pressed inwardly therefrom,
lthesesupports being horizontal and, therefore, parallel.f The supports have 'horizonj i REERIGERATOR-COMPARTMENT.

tal upperisurfacesand inclined` lower surfaees,`as shown on Fig. 3.. p. The ends'of the supports do not reach thefront'and rear edges of the sides, suiiicient inet-al being left in its original plane state -to supportthe supports 8 during the enamel-burning op 60 eration.' It is notdesirable 'to extend the ,supports 8 to the front edges because by'so doing it becomes practically impossible to form .the supports 8 and the anges 4 of.' integral material by pressing or swaging.. Byv making the ends of the shelf-supports stop at some distance from -the rontof the compartment, I am able to lform thesupportsS and the flange 4 easily by. pressing or die-shaping without unduly straining the metal, thus avoiding -the welding of the flange 4 to the front.v of the sides or the cutting and the subsequent welding of any of the metal of the iiange. I In order. to further stiften the compart- 75 ment I weld or otherwise Secure to the outerv surface of the sides the vertical angle pieces or braces 9 having their` longitudinal edges next to the sides.
Between the upper `front'coiners of the 8o v compartment I place the brace or tie 10 having its' ends preferably welded" to the said corners. This tie is made ofsheet -metal having its edges turned toward each other and its center turned so that the said turned edges are contiguous or close together.
After the compartment. has been" assembled as Shown on Fig. 1, it is coated4 with enamel and burned in an enameling oven. The compartment will owing to its beling stitfened in every direction maintain its', original direction during the intense heat ing to which it is subjected during the burning operation. The flanges protect and stiften the edges: the unaltered plane'por- 95 tions of the sides between the supports 8 andV the flange 4 support Vand Stiften the ends of the supports; 'the angles 9 stitfenand support the central portions of the sides; and 4 the tie '10 supports the upper front portlon 100 ofthe sides.
