Abstract

A cargo container is adapted to transport liquids and, alternatively, solid cargo which comprises a box-like housing (10) having rigid side walls (11) and an expandable vessel (1) for containing the liquids mounted inside the box housing. The expansible vessel (1) includes a rigid fixed bottom wall (2), a rigid top wall (3) extending parallel to the bottom wall, and a flexible impermeable sleeve (5) forming side walls extending between the vessel bottom wall (2) and the top wall (3). The top wall (3) is adapted for movement within the box housing (10) between a retracted position and an expanded position and to be raised by air pressure. Latches (34) are provided to secure the vessel top wall (3) in the expanded position to the box housing side walls (11), whereby the vessel can be filled with liquids. When in the retracted position, the top wall (3) is close to the bottom wall (2) with spacers (6) on the bottom wall to support the top wall in the retracted position and to thus define a dead space to receive the retracted sleeve (5). There are cable and pulley devices (23) for providing parallelism to the top wall (3) when the vessel (1) is being expanded and retracted. The box housing side walls (11) include hinged lid panels (17, 18) adapted to be folded down onto the top wall (3) of the expansible vessel (1) when the expansible vessel is retracted in order to serve as a floor for the solid bulk cargo.
