Abstract

There is described a fluid dispensing system which includes a pipette assembly (122) adapted for use with disposable pipette tips (70). To ensure a precise location of a disposable pipette tip (70) on the distal end of the stem (72) of the pipette assemby which holds the pipette tip (70), a proximal chamber (152) of the pipette tip envelops the distal end ot the stem and includes a ledge (172) which encircles an annular region of the stem to form an abutment for the stem and establishes a precise distance between the distal end of the stem (178) and the pipette tip orifice (138). In a preferred embodiment the fluid dispensing system is incorporated in an automated analytical instrument.
