Definitions
- the invention relates to substrates based on mineral felts used for above-ground cultivation.
- the resulting product which is said to be “creped”, has fibers without preferential direction, if not locally, on parts representing a small fraction of the thickness of the substrate. Only the fibers of the faces of the felt directly in contact with the manufacturing devices still have an orientation in planes parallel to these faces. But, again, this concerns only a small fraction of the thickness of the felt.
- the products which are the subject of these publications make it possible, simultaneously, to achieve good resistance to crushing, in particular under the weight of the solution with which they are soaked, and good retention of these solutions. In addition, by playing in particular on the quality of the fibers which constitute them, it is possible to obtain products whose mechanical properties are perfectly satisfactory while allowing substantial lightening.
- the inventors set themselves the goal of obtaining an above-ground growing medium which offers an increased range of properties.
- the inventors have aimed to provide a substrate resistant to sag under hydrostatic pressure, generally offering good retention of the nutrient solution and, moreover, now, overall also, a good air / water ratio.
- the substrates according to the invention consist of felts of mineral fibers whose strata, originally parallel to the faces - when the felt is made from fibers recovered from a receiving member - are, at least partially, pleated in the thickness of the felt.
- the fibers do not have a macroscopically isotropic distribution and the structure in strata is clearly apparent on a section of the product, even if these strata are strongly deformed in folds wide loops.
- the pleated structure is maintained in the situation which, overall, is that resulting from the reception conditions; the upper and lower faces of the substrate are also the upper and lower faces of the felt at the time of its formation.
- the felts it is possible to turn the felts 90 degrees so that the pleated product rests on edge.
- the pattern of the folds is then observed in the substrate on its upper and lower faces.
- This latter implementation is particularly preferred when it is necessary to use extremely "light” felts, that is to say felts in which the density is very low and in particular less than 20 kg / m 3 and less for glass wool felts and, for example, less than 40 kg / m 3 for those made of rock wool.
- the felt is arranged so that the direction of longitudinal compression, which determines the formation of the folds as will be seen below, remains parallel in the horizontal (or practically horizontal) plane corresponding to the ground or to the support on which the substrate rests during its use.
- FIGS. 1 a, 1 b, 1 c and 1 d represent, respectively, two forms of structures of anterior substrates and two structures according to the invention
- FIGS. 2a and 2b show, on a larger scale, structures according to the invention corresponding to FIGS. 1 c and 1 d,
- FIG. 2c shows a substrate according to the prior publication EP-B-310 501, comprising two different superimposed layers
- FIG. 2d shows a substrate according to the invention formed from a felt comprising two different layers
- FIG. 3 is a schematic view of a production installation usable for the manufacture of substrates according to the invention
- Figure 4 is a diagram showing the cutting mode of the original felt to form substrates according to the invention of type 1 c and 1 d.
- the substrate shown in 1 a is formed of a fiber felt and strata oriented parallel to the upper and lower faces. Chronologically, it was the products with this structure that were the first to be used for culture on a fibrous mineral substrate. The strata orientation of the fibers could have made these products not very resistant to deformation in thickness. In fact, this was compensated by a relatively high density (of the order of 70 to 80 kg / m 3 and more) masking this relative lack of resistance.
- Diagram 1 b presents the structure of a “creped” substrate according to the model recommended in the publications EP-A-388 287 and 407 264.
- the fibers on the scale of the substrate are oriented in all directions.
- the texture of these felts makes it possible to significantly reduce their density, without, however, reduce their resistance to sagging.
- Traditional density values for creped substrates are between 20 and 70 kg / m 3 .
- the growth of roots in this disordered environment seems to be more homogeneous. The substrates are better colonized.
- the water qualities of the substrates 1 a and 1 b are comparable for the same quality of fibers, with the proviso that the operation is carried out at a relatively high density.
- type 1 a products lose their water reserve due to less resistance to sagging.
- the substrates according to the invention show differentiated properties which do not correspond to levels in the thickness of the substrate.
- Figures 1 c, 1 d, 2a and 2b illustrate the structure of the products considered. They have a preferential direction of the layers in the direction of the thickness (z) of the felt. This direction is particularly marked in the area located halfway up the felt. It practically disappears along the lower and upper faces.
- the fibers are collected at the base of a chamber (3) on a receiving conveyor (4) which separates the fibers and the aspirated gases. in boxes (5) maintained in depression.
- the fibers, between their formation and reception, are coated with a binder.
- the constituted felt (6) in which the fibers, as indicated above, are arranged in planes or strata substantially parallel to the faces, is then transported in the longitudinal compression assembly.
- the device in question consists of three pairs of conveyors (7/8, 9/10, 1 1/12).
- the speed of the second pair of conveyors 9/10 is lower than that of the pair 7/8 to force the felt to fold back on itself.
- crepe products For so-called crepe products, and to obtain their particular structure, the creping operations are carried out with some precautions.
- the choice of compression ratio and the characteristics of the felt (6) are involved, in particular its density, its thickness, as well as the characteristics of the fibers (length, average diameter). All these elements contribute, in a more or less significant way, to the good result of the creping which, as we indicated, consists of a disordered reorientation of the fibers. If necessary, and especially if the compression ratio is high, the good result of creping can come from a succession of partial crepes. This can be done on the schematic installation, by the succession of compressions corresponding to the passage from one pair of conveyors to the next.
- the compression ratio is equal to or greater than 2.5 and preferably between 4 and 10.
- the highest compression ratios are normally used with felts which, originally, have the mass per unit lowest surface area.
- the fibers which are most suitable for the use concerned are relatively long.
- the average diameter of the fibers used influences, as is known, the properties of the felts. It is known in particular that, for the same density, a substrate formed of fibers of smaller diameter offers better retentivity.
- the most significant advantage of using fibers with a small diameter lies in the possibility of constituting felts of very low density having nevertheless good water properties.
- the use of fibers of small diameters and, consequently, of felts at the origin of very low density also facilitates compression at high rates (from 4 to 10 and more ) leading to products whose ply structure is particularly well marked.
- the fibers of the felts used to constitute the substrates according to the invention have a diameter of between 1 and 1 1 micrometers and, most often, between 2 and 9 micrometers.
- the substrates according to the invention have been qualified as "pleated". This is a convenient name, but one that does not exactly correspond to their structure. By this term, it is a matter of rendering what corresponds to a trend important of this structure, but which does not give a complete picture.
- the lower and upper faces which are in contact with the conveyor devices (or the like, in particular cylinders) used to perform the longitudinal compression are presented in a substantially uniform manner.
- these faces are practically free from crevices which, if the product were actually
- the presence on the faces of the product of layers whose directions are those of these faces makes it possible to maintain a good resistance of the product to the stresses (in particular in bending) that it can undergo during its handling.
- These layers form, in a way, a reinforcement or an envelope which guarantees the stability of the product.
- the tendency to form these "internal folds" can be estimated by observing a longitudinal section in the thickness of the felt. It is advantageously observed according to the invention that the fraction of this section corresponding to fibers substantially perpendicular to the faces of the felt represents at least 50% of the whole. This proportion can even reach 70% or more.
- the substrates according to the invention can be made from pleated felts, as has just been said, according to two arrangements.
- the thickness of the felt (3) corresponds to that of the substrate.
- the thickness of the felt corresponds to the upper and lower faces of the substrate.
- the substrates according to the invention can advantageously be of relatively low density. Their structure gives them, at equal density, good resistance to compression in the thickness or, which is more related to their use, good resistance to hydrostatic pressure. Furthermore, as we have indicated, obtaining the structure according to the invention is facilitated if one starts with felts (6) - before longitudinal compression - of low surface mass. This allows, even with relatively high compression ratios, to produce felts and, consequently, substrates with low density.
- the products according to the invention have an apparent density of less than 70 kg / m 3 and, preferably, less than 50 kg / m 3 .
- the density of the substrates can drop to extremely low values, for example of the order of 10 kg / m 3 , the most suitable products will preferably be between 15 and 40 kg / m 3 .
- the lower limits in this area are practical.
- the lower the density the more difficult it is to maintain the compressive strength, especially as these densities correspond to fibers of very small diameter and which offer limited resistance.
- the increase in the proportion of binder can, to a certain extent, compensate for this lack of intrinsic resistance of the fibers, but it is difficult to increase this proportion much without causing other difficulties.
- the use in culture of a substrate arranged as in 2b offers the particularity of a drainage of the nutritive solutions faster than in the case of the substrates arranged according to 2a.
- the progression of the solution through the original strata, or layers, of the felt is slower than in a direction parallel to these strata, whether these are flat - when a non "pleated" substrate is observed - or they are pleated as according to the invention.
- the better-drained substrate offers higher air / water ratios on average than products which, at equilibrium, have higher water retention.
- the apparent density is still, at least in part, that which is found in other substrates, in particular creped substrates, this density masks significant differences locally inside the product . This also constitutes an important characteristic of the products according to the invention which is added to that concerning the orientation of the fibers.
- the variations in local density appear in the hollow of the folds where the fibers are relatively more packed. They can also appear between the layers formed perpendicular to the faces of the felts and present, in this case, elongated shapes. In addition, systematically, the faces themselves have a local density slightly higher than the average. The differences in density appear on the felts used, whether we consider fractions located in different points of the thickness of the felt, or at the same level but at different points in the length of the felt corresponding to the direction of progression on the production line.
- Figure 2c is an example of a felt of this type consisting of two layers superimposed in the thickness of the product on the production line. It will, for example, be a felt of the type described in publication EP-A-310 501. It can be, in particular, two layers distinct by their apparent density. It can also be two layers distinct by the size (diameter) of the fibers that compose them. These two types of differences lead, as explained in this publication, to distinct mechanical and water behaviors.
- the preparation of a substrate according to the invention from a felt of the type presented in FIG. 2c leads to a structure as shown diagrammatically in FIG. 2d. In this figure, we have underlined with a mixed line which corresponds approximately to the boundary between the two original layers.
- This diagram makes it possible to highlight that beyond local variations inside each layer, as previously described, the presence of two distinct layers further promotes the constitution of zones of characteristics also distinct inside the substrate. It is understood that the folding favors the appearance of folds (vertical in the felt) alternately corresponding to each of the original layers. Under these conditions, it is possible to obtain a diversity of hydric and / or mechanical characteristics, once again without breaking the continuity of the substrate, this diversity being all the more marked as the initial layers are themselves more different.
- each of the layers has, before compression, a mass of fibers per unit of substantially equal surface.
- the felt shown in FIG. 2d can be used to constitute a substrate according to the two provisions provided.
- the substrate offers, alternately in “vertical” zones, parts with water retention alternately higher and lower. These variations are added to those resulting from local variations in density, which were discussed above, to result in a product whose water properties are therefore relatively variable.
- FIGS. 2c and 2d concerning an assembly formed by two layers can be generalized to an assembly comprising more than two layers.
- obtaining the original multilayer felt can be obtained, for example, on an installation comprising a succession of fiber production devices as described in EP-B-310 501.
- the diagram in FIG. 3 thus presents a succession of three aligned devices (1) which deposit three layers of fibers to constitute a single felt. If the operating conditions are adjusted accordingly, such an installation can therefore lead to a product with three distinct layers.
- Products according to the invention were prepared from glass fiber felts of different qualities. On these products, the apparent density, the subsidence after immersion and drainage, the water properties of the products were measured, in particular the pF 1 (measurement made under the conditions described in particular in EP-A-201 426 and which allows '' assess the amount of water available for the plants retained by the substrate) and the amount of air after drainage.
- Product IV is made from a felt comprising two layers of equal thickness corresponding to products II and III, layer II being placed on layer III .
- the substrates prepared as indicated above all have a thickness of 7.5 cm. There are local differences in density on cut pieces of 2 x 2 cm which can reach 50% more or less compared to the apparent average value.
- the arrangement of the loaves is that of FIGS. 1 c and 2a for examples I, II, III and that of FIG. 2d for example IV.
- the products according to the invention show, compared to crepe products, excellent aptitudes.
- the productions, under the same conditions, are a little more abundant.
- product IV an increase in yield of the order of 4% compared to similar products consisting of a single layer.
- This result alone shows that the non-homogeneous constitution of the products can be a factor favorable to culture.
- this product proves to be more efficient than product III made up of relatively large fibers and which, for this reason, offers a less good water retention, but also more efficient than product I which, conversely, offers a very good reserve of water.
- the mode of cutting the loaves is also an element which influences the properties of the products according to the invention.
- the cutting is made so that the length of the bread corresponds to the width of the strip of felt.
- the direction of progression of the “pleated” felt (schematically represented by the wavy line in the thickness) is indicated by an arrow.
- the cutting to lead to a type 1 c bread is carried out in the direction A-A.
- Type 1 d breads results from a longitudinal cut, for example in the BB direction, followed by a 90 ° rotation to bring the bread to "edge".
- Type 1 c breads that is to say those whose height (z) corresponds to the thickness of the initial felt (z) are preferably cut so as to result in the model shown.
- each fold extends over the entire length of the bread.
- This arrangement is preferable to the arrangement which would see the folds in width.
- the longitudinal arrangement of the folds gives the bread greater rigidity which facilitates its handling.
- This arrangement is also preferable to promote colonization of the bread by the roots.
- the folds extended across the width of the bread they would preferentially be carried along the faces and would not find adequate conditions for their development.
- the dominant characteristic is the drainage ability for plants which require a high air / water ratio.
- the arrangement of the strata in this case, can favor the growth of the roots from top to bottom. This trend is not, however, too great insofar as, as indicated above, this arrangement is mainly implemented for products of very low density. Under these conditions, the influence of the strata in a very sparse structure is a little less sensitive on the orientation of the development of the roots.
