Definitions
- the present invention relates to an alloy of titanium (Ti) and zirconium (Zr) for the production of surgical implants.
- a first application includes screws, plates and nails for fracture treatment and surgical orthopedics as well as endoprostheses.
- a second application includes dental surgery with endosseous implants, abutments and elements for superstructures.
- the alloy is also suitable for implants for anchoring prostheses in the facial area, e.g. suitable for maxillofacial and extraoral implants.
- the invention further relates to a method for producing such an alloy.
- Titanium-aluminum-vanadium (Ti6Al4V) according to ISO 5832-3; Titanium-aluminum-iron (Ti5Al2.5Fe) according to ISO 832-10; Titanium aluminum niobium (Ti6Al7Nb) according to ISO 5832-11.
- Ti6Al4V Titanium-aluminum-vanadium
- Ti5Al2.5Fe Titanium-aluminum-iron
- Ti6Al7Nb Titanium aluminum niobium
- Bone and dental surgery implants are exposed to high stresses and must be mechanically strong. Important parameters are the yield point, the elongation to break and the modulus of elasticity. Stainless steel and unalloyed titanium have low strength and are therefore cold worked. The tensile strength for titanium increases from about 500 MPa to about 700 MPa. The strength of the standardized two titanium alloys of 900 - 1000 MPa is not achieved.
- An experiment to measure osseointegration is the attempt to eject.
- a cylindrical implant is inserted into the bone in animal experiments and the ejection force is determined as a function of the lying time, typically after 12 weeks.
- the anchoring of mechanically roughened, unalloyed titanium, Ti6Al4V and Ti6Al7Nb is of the same strength, but that a mechanically roughened and chemically etched surface for implants made of pure titanium gives much higher ejection forces than an identical surface treatment for implants Alloy (see M. Wong, J. Eulenberger, R. Schenk, E. Hunziker: Effect of surface topology on the osseointegration of implant materials in trabecular bone. J. Biomed. Mater. Res. 29, 1995, 1569) .
- One or all of the three allowed elements AI, V, Nb apparently inhibit integration in the bone.
- CH-A-544 154 named a binary titanium-zirconium alloy with 25-75% by weight Zr for implants.
- the range of composition corresponds to high mechanical strengths. These metals are reactive, show exothermic oxidation and are therefore not easy to process.
- the alloy formula corresponds to an atomic concentration of 15-61% Zr, i.e. H. the alloyed element has a strong influence on electrochemical and biological reactions. This is not desirable and the reactions specific to titanium in living tissue should not be lost.
- the invention is based on the problem of adding a metallic biomaterial create, which firstly has high strength, secondly is compatible and integrated in soft and hard tissue and thirdly is resistant to crevice corrosion.
- a binary alloy of titanium and zircon is proposed, the alloyed zirconium content being less than 25% by weight (14.9 at%), but more than 5% by weight (2.7 at%), so that a titanium-rich alloy results.
- Preferred ranges of the zirconium content are between 19% and 10% by weight.
- the characteristics of the manufacturing process of the alloy are that the alloy is hot forged and then cold worked.
- the forging process is carried out at temperatures above 850 ° C., followed by rapid cooling of the alloy.
- the forging process in the area of the alpha / beta phase transition can be carried out at 770 ° C. to 830 ° C. in order to produce special structural structures.
- a metallic biomaterial is now available for the defined field of application, which has sufficient strength and excellent tissue compatibility in soft and hard tissue and is also resistant to crevice corrosion.
- the binary titanium-zirconium alloy can be further solidified by cold working and / or by adding oxygen.
- the alloys according to the invention can also be cold worked well, for example by rolling.
- the strength values according to Table 2 were found on a Til5Zr alloy annealed after hot forging above the alpha-beta conversion: Material Glasfe ⁇ Fliess- Vickers hardness
- Oxygen is to be regarded as a controlled alloy component that influences the strength properties. Results are summarized in Table 3.
- the breaking stress (breaking load / cross-section at breaking point) is a measure of the toughness of a metal. It is remarkably high for the single-phase Ti-Zr alloys and roughly equal to that of the two-phase (alpha-beta) alloys Ti6Al4V and Ti6A17Nb.
- the tensile strength and yield point of the material according to the invention are also better than that of cold-formed, unalloyed titanium of shade 4 and almost reach that of the alpha-beta alloys if the effect of cold-forming and oxygen alloying is used. Incidentally, the cold working and addition of oxygen in no way changes the tissue compatibility of the binary Ti-Zr alloy.
- Organic substances are e.g. B. the amino acids as building blocks of the proteins and as components of the so-called basic substance (organic portion of bones). Calcium and phosphates are the main components of the bone mineral.
- adsorption and chemisorption abbreviation for chemical adsorption. It is known that amino acids are adsorbed on titanium oxide (anatase and rutile in powder form) and on zirconium oxide. It is also known that amino acids are chemisorbed on titanium metal oxidized in air (cf. JM Gold, M.
- Amino acids are chemisorbed Calcium and phosphates bind in the form of surface complexes with the oxidized metal.
- the reactions are strong, especially for Ti-rich alloys, and they affect all three reactants of osseointegration.
- adsorption is missing or is weaker for zirconium-rich alloys. Alloying with Zr also has the advantageous effect of increasing the corrosion resistance of Ti in electrolytes containing chloride. The effect improves the resistance to crevice corrosion, but only if the proportion of Zr exceeds 5% by weight.
- a preferred composition is therefore the range of less than 19% by weight but more than 10% by weight of zircon.
- a metal with 14-15% by weight Zr is also particularly suitable for the purpose.
- This metal can also be strengthened by cold forming, according to the numbers above. Then strengths of up to 1000 MPa can be achieved, which comes close to the properties of the alpha-beta materials.
- the titanium alloy max. 0.30% by weight Fe, max. 0.05% by weight N, max. 0.10% by weight C and max. Contain 0.015% by weight of H as technical impurities.
- zircon can contain 2 - 3% by weight hafnium, a non-toxic element.
- the alloy according to the invention can optionally have up to 0.5% by weight of hafnium as foreign component.
