本発明は、 ポリマー材料などの被検査物に超音波を送信し、 欠陥等から反 射してく るエコーを評価することにより非破壊検査を行う超音波探傷に用い られるフォーカス型縦波超音波探触子及び超音波欠陥評価装置に関する。 背 景 技 術
ポリマー材料などは、鋼などの金属に較べ、 一般的に音波の減衰率が高く、 通常の超音波探触子を用いると低い S Z N比をもった検出信号しか得られな い。 減衰による損失を少なくするため超音波ビームの周波数を低くすると欠 陥分解能が悪くなり、 例えば、 都市ガス配管、 給湯用配管等に使われ始めて いる、 架橘ポリエチレン樹脂管を代表とするポリマー管の接合箇所の超音波 探傷、 より詳しくは継手軸周りに螺旋状に巻かれた融着用ワイヤーを内部に 備えたポリオレフイン樹脂製 (代表的には、 ポリエチレンもしくは架橋ポリ エチレンを挙げることができ、 ポリブテンの場合もある) の融着継手の内周 面と、 この融着継手に融着されるポリォレフィ ン樹脂管の管外周面との間に 形成される融着界面の超音波探傷では、 ワイヤーからの反射エコーと融着不 良界面などからの欠陥エコーとを区別することが困難となる。
このような問題点を克服するため、 横波より減衰率が少ない縦波を用いる とともに、 より強い超音波ビームを被検査物に送り込むことができるフォー カス型縦波超音波探触子の採用が考えられる。 フォーカス型縦波超音波探触 子から送信された超音波ビームはそのフォーカス領域においてビーム径が小 さくなるため、 分解能に優れた探傷を行うことができる。 このため、 欠陥の 発生領域に欠陥ではない反射源が存在するようなケースでも、 被検査物の表 面をフォーカス型探触子で正確に走査すれば、 その小さなビーム径により予 め位置が分かっている反射源と欠陥とを区別することが可能である。
フォーカス型縦波超音波探触子には、 超音波振動子と しての圧電素子の湾 曲形状と して (多数の圧電素子片湾曲状に並べて湾曲圧電素子を形成しても よい) 超音波ビームを集束させて予め決められた伝播距離にフォーカスを合 わせる固定フォーカスタイプと、 走査方向に複数個配列されている各圧電素 子を少しづつ遅延させて発振させることによって超音波ビームに指向性をも たせて全体で合成される超音波ビームを所望の伝播距離にフォーカスを合わ せる電子フォーカスタイプとがある。 電子フォーカスタイプは制御回路が複 雑であり、 探触子そのものも非常に精密なもので慎重に极わなければならな いことから医療現場での超音波診断装置に主に使用されており、 材料検査な どでは固定フォーカスタイプが使用されている。
しかし、 固定フォーカスタイプの探触子では、 湾曲状圧電素子の前面にマ ツチング材を形成しておき、 このマッチング材の先端面を被検査物表面に接 触させ、 湾曲状圧電素子によって励起された超音波をマツチング材を経て被 検査物内に入射させる。 この場合、 湾曲状圧電素子とマッチング材との間及 びマツチング材と被検査物表面との間で超音波の反射が生じ、 この反射は音 波エネルギーの損失をもたらすだけではなく、 その反射エコーの繰り返しが 欠陥検出を妨害する。
本発明の課題の 1つは、 湾曲状圧電素子を用いたフォーカス型縦波超音波 探触子からこのような問題点を低減することである。
さらに本発明のもう 1つの課題は、 前述したようなポリマ一管の接合箇所 の超音波探傷に用いられる超音波探傷装置のための欠陥評価装置の改善であ る。 つまり、 従来より超音波探傷装置において被検査物中に存在する欠陥を 評価するために、 表面エコーや底面エコーなどの被検査物の形状に起因する エコーが生じる時間軸領域を除外した領域にゲ一トをかけることにより欠陥 からのエコーだけを選別できるように構成されている。 つまり、 欠陥検出用 ゲ一 卜は、 超音波探触子によって被検査物を走査する際超音波探触子の位置 に応じた幾何学的な計算によって、 探傷範囲を満足するようにその位置や幅 が決められるが、 その際、 ゲー ト回路は、 被検査物の表面エコーに同時させ てこれを基準にして欠陥検出用ゲ一 トを設定する表面エコー同期ゲートモ一 ドゃ、 超音波を励起するパルスを同期信号を基準と して欠陥検出用ゲー 卜を 設定する励起パルス同期ゲートモ一ドを採用することで、 常に被検査物内か ら戻ってきたエコーを欠陥エコーと して評価する。 このよ うな超音波探傷装 置のための欠陥評価装置では、 被検査物内部に欠陥ではない反射源が存在す る場合、 この反射源からのエコーを欠陥エコーから除外するため、 この反射 源の超音波伝播時間領域を欠陥ゲー トから外すことになるが、 その場合、 こ の反射源と同じ超音波伝播時間領域に存在する欠陥を検出することができな くなる。
要するに、 ここでの本発明のもう 1つの課題とは、 超音波探傷装置によつ て検査される被検査物内に欠陥でない反射源が存在する場合においても所望 の探傷範囲をカバーする欠陥評価装置を提供することである。 発 明 の 開 示
ポリマ一材料検査ためのフォーカス型縦波超音波探触子に関する本発明の 課題は、 本発明によれば、 湾曲状圧電素子と、 前記湾曲状圧電素子の凹面に 密着した入力端面と被検査物と してのポリマー材料の表面に適合した出力端 面とを有するマッチング材とを備え、 前記マツチング材の音響ィンピーダン スが前記被検査物の音響ィンピーダンスに適合させられているフォーカス型 縦波超音波探触子によって解決される。 この構成では、 マッチング材の音響 インピーダンスと被検査物の音響ィンピ一ダンスとを適合させることにより、 マツチング材と被検査物の表面との界面で超音波の反射を抑制することがで き、 つまりマツチング材から被検査物へ入射する超音波のエネルギー損失を 少なくすることができ、 反射エコーの繰り返しによる探傷の妨害をなくすと ともに超音波減衰の大きな材料に対する検査においても S / N比に優れた欠 陥検出信号が得られる。
フォーカス型縦波超音波探触子に関する本発明の課題は、本発明によれば、 湾曲状圧電素子と、 前記湾曲状圧電素子の凹面に密着した入力端面と被検査 物と してのポリマー材料の表面に適合した出力端面とを有するマッチング材 とを備え、 前記マツチング材の音響ィンピーダンスが前記湾曲状圧電素子の 音響ィンピーダンスに適合させられているフォーカス型縦波超音波探触子に よっても解決される。 この構成では、 マッチング材の音響インピーダンスと 湾曲状圧電素子の音響ィンピ一ダンスに適合させることにより、 湾曲状圧電 素子からマッチング材への超音波の伝播特性が改善され、 上記超音波探触子 と同様に、 超音波減衰の大きな材料に対する検査においても S Z N比に優れ た欠陥検出信号が得られる。
もちろん、 上述した 2つの特徴を備えたフォーカス型縦波超音波探触子、 つま りマツチング材の音響ィンピーダンスが被検査物の音響ィンピーダンス に適合させられ、 かつマッチング材の音響インピーダンスは前記湾曲状圧電 素子の音響ィンピーダンスに適合させられた超音波探触子の場合、 より優れ た検査結果が得られる。
ただし、 通常、 超音波探傷の分野で用いられている圧電素子は、 チタン酸 ジルコン酸鉛、 ニオブ酸鉛、 ニオブ酸リチウムなどの圧電性金属酸化物から 作られており、 固定フォーカスタイプの探触子のための湾曲状の圧電素子を 作るには、 かなりの技術力が必要とされる。 また、 圧電性金属酸化物の音響 ィンピーダンスは比較的大きいので、 圧電性金属酸化物の音響ィンピーダン スにマツチング材の音響ィンピ一ダンスを合わすより、 より小さな音響ィン ピーダンスを有する圧電材料と組み合わせる方が望ましい。
従って、 本発明の好適な実施形態の 1つでは、 ポリマー圧電材料製の湾曲 状圧電素子が用いられる。 湾曲状圧電素子と して弾力性に富んだポリマー材 料を採用することで、 超音波伝播部材と してのマツチング材の凸面湾曲状に 形成された端部に、 薄膜電極を施されたシー ト状のポリマー材料を密着させ るだけで、 フォーカス型縦波超音波探触子が作られ、 その際マッチング材の 音響ィンピーダンスはポリマー圧電素子の音響ィンピーダンスに容易に類似 させることができるので、 その境界面における音波反射や音場の乱れは金属 酸化物とプラスチックに比べ著しく抑制される。 これにより、 簡単に製造さ れるにもかかわらず、 好ましい超音波パルス波を励起することができる。 こ こでいうマッチング材とポリマー圧電素子の音響ィンピ一ダンスの類似の範 囲は、 互いの境界で生じる音波反射や音場の乱れが高分解能を必要とする探 傷に悪影響を与えないという条件を満たす、 両者の音響インピーダンスの相 違は含まれる範囲である。 実験的には 1〜 3倍程度の音響ィンピーダンスの 違いでも十分であることがわかっているが、 この程度の音響ィンピ一ダンス の相違は本発明でのマツチング材の音響ィンピーダンスと前記湾曲状圧電素 子の音響インピーダンスの類似範囲に入るとみなされるが、 一般に 1 0倍以 上ある圧電性金属酸化物とプラスチックの違いに比べると、 その違いは極め て小さいといえるだろう。
さらに、 本発明による他の 1つの好適実施形態では、 マッチング材の音響 インピーダンスは、 前記入力端面から出力端面にかけて湾曲状圧電素子から 発射された縦波超音波の伝播方向に関して前記湾曲状圧電素子の音響ィンピ —ダンスに適合する値から前記被検査物の音響ィンピーダンスに適合する値 に向かって変化している。 この構成では、 圧電素子からマッチング材への超 音波の伝播特性が改善されるとともに、 マツチング材と被検査物との界面領 域では、 マッチング材の音響インピーダンスが被検査物の音響インピーダン スに類似しているため、 マツチング材と被検査物の境界での音波反射や音場 の乱れが抑制され、 さらに欠陥検査にとって有利となる。 音響インピーダン ス変化を有するマッチング材は、 ポリマ一材料に音響ィンピ一ダンスの大き な金属粉末を添加しながら遠心成型をすることで実現することができるし、 あるいは、 音響インピーダンスの異なるポリマーシートを多重に重ねていく ことで実現することもできる。
固定フォーカスタイプの縦波超音波探触子では、 マツチング材の長さは湾 曲状圧電素子から発射された縦波超音波が被検査物の所定検査ボイン 卜で焦 点を結ぶように設定することが望ましい。 しカゝし、 固定フォーカスタイプの 探触子は圧電素子の湾曲形状によって決定される固定フォーカス距離となつ ているので、高分解能の鮮明なエコーを得ることのできる範囲は限定される。 このため、 材料表面からの探傷領域までの距離毎に、 その距離用の探触子を 用意しなければならないし、 被検査物の表面が管材のような曲面である場合 探触子と被検査物の良好な接触状態を確保するためにはその表面曲率に合わ せた接触面を形成した探触子を用意しなければならない。 このため、 通常で は、 異なる種類の管材を検査するためには、 かなりの数のフォーカス型探触 子が必要となる。
しかしながら、 このような問題は、 本発明の好適な実施形態と しての、 マ ツチング材は第 1マッチング材と第 2マッチング材とに分割され、 第 1マツ チング材は一方の端面が入力端面と して形成されるとともに他方の端面が第 1移行端面と して形成され、 第 2マッチング材は一方の端面が出力端面と し て形成されるとともに他方の端面が第 1移行端面に密着可能な第 2移行端面 と して形成され、 第 1移行端面の音響インピーダンスは第 2移行端面の音響 ィンピーダンスに適合させられていることを特徴とする縦波超音波探触子に よって解消される。
湾曲状圧電素子と被検査物との間をつなぐマツチング材を第 1マッチング 材と第 2マッチング材との 2つで構成しており、 被検査物内で形成されるフ オーカスポイン トを第 2マッチング材の長さにより調整するとともに、 第 1 移行端面と第 2移行端面の音響インピーダンス、 つまり第 1 マッチング材と 第 2マツチング材の界面領域の音饗ィンピ一ダンスを類似させることにより 第 1マッチング材と第 2マッチング材との界面から生じるエコーも抑えてい る。 ここで第 1マッチング材と第 2マッチング材の音響ィンピーダンスが等 しいという記載には、 互いの界面から生じるエコーが欠陥エコーの評価に影 響を与えない程度しか生じさせない範囲の相違も含まれるべきであり、 両者 の音響ィンピーダンスが超音波探傷に関して実質的に同一であることが重要 である。 このような第 1マッチング材と第 2マッチング材との採用により、 本発明のフォーカス型縦波超音波探触子では、 種々の被検査物が検査対象と なっていても、 各検査対象ごとに第 2マツチング材だけが異なる探触子を用 意するだけでよい。
本発明の好適な実施形態と して、 第 2マツチング材を第 1マツチング材に 対して脱着自在にするならば、 各検査対象に適合するように作られた複数の 第 2マッチング材から最適なものを選択して、 湾曲状圧電素子と第 1マッチ ング材からなる唯一のサブアッセンプリに取り付けるだけで、 最適なフォー カス型縦波超音波探触子が組み上がるので、 従来に比べ、 検査コス トを劇的 に抑制することができる。
本発明のフォーカス型縦波超音波探触子を用いた重要な検査は、 ポリオレ フィ ン樹脂管 E F (熱融着) 継手融着部の超音波検査であり、 この検査では 軸方向に螺旋状に巻かれた融着用ワイヤーを継手内部に備えた融着継手の継 手内周面と、 この融着継手に融着される管の管外周面との間に形成される融 着状態を、 ワイヤーの隙間を通り抜けるように超音波ビームを伝播させて検 査しなければならないのである。 もちろん、 管の種類に応じて、 探触子を接 触させる面の曲面形状やワイヤーまでの深さは異なるのである。 このような 検査のための本発明の好適実施形態では、 第 1マッチング材と第 2マツチン グ材はポリオレフイン樹脂によって作られており、 これにより、 第 2マッチ ング材と間の境界面においても、 反射が少なく、 十分な超音波エネルギーを 被検査物に入射することができるとともに、 境界エコーによる妨害も無視で きるようになる。 なお、 ポリオレフイン樹脂の代表と しては、 ポリエチレン もしくは架橋ポリエチレンを挙げることができ、 ポリブテンの場合もある。 超音波探傷装置のための欠陥評価装置に関する本発明の課題は、 本発明に よれば、 被検査物内の所定反射源からのエコーのための第 1ゲートを生成す る第 1ゲート回路と、 前記第 1エコーから所定時間遅れの位置に欠陥検出用 の第 2ゲー トを生成する第 2ゲー 卜回路と、 前記第 1エコーの振幅が所定レ ベルを越えた場合欠陥検出と判定する第 1評価回路と、 前記第 2ゲー トに発 生したエコーが生じた場合欠陥検出と判定する第 2評価回路とが備えられて いる欠陥評価装置によって解決される。
この構成では、 欠陥ではない反射源から生じるエコーの超音波伝播時間領 域に第 1ゲー トを設定し、 その他の探傷領域には第 2ゲートを設定し、 第 1 ゲー 卜に生じるエコーに対しては欠陥ではない反射源から通常生じるエコー の強度を越えるレベルの信号のみを欠陥と して評価し、 第 2ゲートに生じる エコーは欠陥と して評価する。 これにより、 欠陥でない反射源が存在する領 域も含めて所望の探傷範囲をカバーすることができる。
さらに、 前記第 2ゲ一ト回路は前記第 1エコーと前記第 2ゲー卜の時間間 隔を前記被検査物中の音速の変化に追従して変更することを特徴とする本発 明の好適な 1つの実施形態によって得られる利点は、 前述した表面エコー同 期ゲー トモ一ドゃ励起パルス同期ゲートモ一ドでゲ一トを生成する場合の被 検査物内の音速が一定であるという絶対条件が必要でなくなるという ことで ある。 熱によって音速は大きく変化する材料等の溶融接合などの熱加工後の 探傷において、 このことは大きな利点をもつ。 音速変化に応じてゲートスタ 一トとゲ一ト幅の時間を変更することにより、 被検査物中の所望の領域に正 確に対応するようにゲー トを発生させることができるのである。 この目的の ため、 第 1ゲー ト回路は表面エコーと第 1ゲ一 卜の時間間隔を被検査物中の 音速の変化に追従して変更するように構成され、 第 2ゲー ト回路は第 1ェコ 一と第 2ゲー 卜の時間間隔を被検査物中の音速の変化に追従して変更するよ うに構成される。
このようなゲー 卜の音速変化の追従には、 その時点での音速を把握しなけ ればならないが、 本発明の好適な実施形態では、 被検査物内の 2つの所定反 射源からのエコー、 例えば表面エコーや底面エコーなどの時間間隔の計測に よって被検査物中の音速の変化を求めている。 本発明による欠陥評価装置を 備えた超音波探傷装置の典型的な使用例と して、 ポリオレフィン樹脂管 E F (熱融着) 継手融着部の超音波検査を取り上げると、 この検査では軸方向に 螺旋状に巻かれた融着用ワイヤ一を継手内部に備えた融着継手の継手内周面 と、この融着継手に融着される管の管外周面との間に形成される融着状態を、 検査するわけであり、 第 1 ゲー トをワイヤー領域に、 そして第 2ゲー トを融 着面領域に設定するとともに、 所定反射源からのエコーと して、 ワイヤ一か らのエコーと管内面からのエコーを利用するとよい。 図面の簡単な説明

以下本発明の第 1の実施の形態を図 1 と図 2を用いて説明する。ここでは、 フォーカス型縦波超音波探触子 1は、 2本のポリエチレン管 2を突き合わせ 接合するポリエチレン管 E F継手 3の接合状態の超音波検査に用いられてい る。 ポリエチレンはポリオレフィ ン樹脂に含まれる 1 つの物質と してここで 採用されている。 このポリエチレン管 E F継手 3は、 突き合わされたポリエ チレン管 2に外嵌した状態で、 内壁部に軸方向に螺旋状に巻かれた融着用ヮ ィヤー 4に給電して加熱し、 その周辺部を溶かすことにより、 ポリエチレン 管 E F継手 3の内壁面 3 b とポリエチレン管 2の外壁面 2 aを融着させて、 強固な密封接続を実現するものである。 この融着作業において、 例えば、 砂、 ほこ り、 ごみ、 水、 どろ水などがポリエチレン管 E F継手 3の内壁面 3 b と ポリエチレン管 2の外壁面 2 a との間に入り込んでいたり していると、 未融 着部 5が生じる。 このよ うな未融着部 5をポリエチレン管 E F継手 3の外壁 面 3 aからフォーカス型縦波超音波探触子 1 を用いて探すのである。
図 2から明らかなように、 融着用ワイヤー 4は管軸方向に螺旋状に巻かれ ているので、 この融着用ワイヤー 4からのエコーが未融着部 5からのエコー の検出を邪魔しないように、 その音軸中心線が融着用ワイヤー 4の隙間を通 る超音波ビームで融着領域を検査することが重要である。 つまり、 高分解能 をもった超音波ビームで検査する必要があり、 そのためにフォーカス型縦波 超音波探触子 1は融着用ワイヤー 4から融着領域の間にフォーカスが合って いなければならない。
このフォーカス型縦波超音波探触子 1は、 ダンパ一材 1 3によって裏打ち された湾曲状圧電素子 1 1 と、 圧電素子 1 1の前面、 つまり凹曲面に密着さ れているマッチング材 1 2 と、 これらの一体物を内装している力ップ状の本 体ケース 1 4を備えている。 圧電素子 1 1の材料と してポリマー圧電膜は、 仕様に応じて選択されるが、 例えば、 ポリジフルォロェチレン (ポリフッ化 ビニリデン : P VD F)、 P (VD F— T r F E) (フッ化ビニリデンと 3フ ッ化工チレンの共重合体)、 P (VD F -T e F E) (フッ化ビニリデンと 4 フッ化工チレンの共重合体) などが代表的であり、 これを、 所望フォーカス 距離に合わせて設計されたマツチング材 1 2の凸曲面に密着張り付けされる ことで、 湾曲状圧電素子と して機能する。 そのような圧電素子の両面にここ では図示されていないが、 薄膜電極が形成されており、 この電極は電線 1 5 を介して本体ケース 1 4に設けられたコネクター 1 6に接続されている。 こ のコネクター 1 6が、 高周波ケーブルを介して、 高周波発振器、 増幅器、 信 号評価部、 モニターなどを備えた超音波探傷器のコネクタ一に接続されるこ とにより、 フォーカス型縦波超音波探触子 1は超音波探傷の超音波発信部及 び受信部と して機能する。 マッチング材 1 2は、 ここでは被検査物と同じ材 料であるポリエチレンから作られており、 圧電素子 1 1 とは反対側の面は、 ポリエチレン管 E F継手 3の外壁面 3 aにぴつたり と合うように凹面に加工 されている。 これによりマツチング材 1 2と外壁面 3 a との間に力ップリン グ剤 6を薄く介在させるだけで、 良好な密着性が得られる。 このフォーカス 型縦波超音波探触子 1 のフォーカス距離は、 マッチング材 1 2の長さを変更 することによつて所望のものにすることができる。
ここで用いられた圧電素子 1 1 の音響ィンピ一ダンスは 2. I X
1 06 k g / s · πι2であり、 ポリエチレン製のマツチング材 1 2の音響ィン ピーダンスは 4. 5 X 1 06 k g / s ' m2であり、 3 0 X
1 06 k g / s . m2以上の金属酸化物圧電素子の音響インピ一ダンスを考え ると、 ポリマー製圧電素子 1 1 とマッチング材 1 2の音響ィンピーダンスは 類似しているといえる。 このフォーカス型縦波超音波探触子 1 の水浸法 (厚 さ 0. 3 4 mmの刃を照準とする) でのフォーカス点での音圧状態は図 3に 示しており、 良好なフォーカスレベルが得られている。 さらに、 図 4には、 前述したポリエチレン管 E F継手 3の接合状態を検査するテス トピースに対 する探触子 1 の位置とその際のモニターでのエコー表示が示されている。 こ のテス ト ピースには、 ワイヤー 4の内側に位置するポリエチレン管 E F継手 3の接合部に人工的に非融着部が形成されているので、 フォーカスがよく効 いた本発明による探触子 1 を管軸方向に沿って走査することにより、 ワイヤ 一 4からのエコーが、 ここでは伝播時間 1 6 μ sec の位置付近に高くなつた り低くなつたり しながら生じ、 人工欠陥 (接合不良個所) のエコーは伝播時 間 1 8 /i sec の位置付近に生じるはずである。 実験の結果によれば、 図 4に 示すように、 探触子 1 を融着用ワイヤー 4の直上に置いた場合は融着用ワイ ャ一 4からのエコーが表示され (図 4 ( a ))、 探触子 1 を融着用ワイヤー 4 の隙間に置いた場合融着用ワイヤー 4からのエコーが小さく なつて (図 4 ( b))、 融着用ワイヤー 4の隙間から人工欠陥からのエコーが確実に検出さ れている (図 4 ( c ))。 このことから、 このフォーカス型縦波超音波探触子 1がポリエチレン管 E F継手 3の接合状態の検査に有効であることは明らか であり、 実際の探傷では、 同じサイズの E F継手 3に対しては 1 7 μ sec か ら 2 0 μ sec の間にゲー トをかけて管周面全域から走査することで接合不良 の検査を行う ことができる。 なお、 図 4のモニター表示において、 縦軸は超 音波の振幅 (電圧) を表しており、 横軸は超音波の伝播時間を表しているが、 伝播時間は図面の都合上、 7 μ secから 2 7 μ secの領域だけを示しており、 実質的な探傷領域が中央にくるように設定されている。
被検査物とマッチング材 1 2が同じ材料の場合は問題ないが、 被検査物と マッチング材 1 2 との材料が異なりその音響ィンピーダンスが大きく異なる 場合、 マッチング材 1 2 と して、 その音響イ ンピーダンスがポリマー圧電素 子 1 1 の音響インピーダンスから被検査物の音響インピーダンスに近づく よ うな傾斜した音響ィンピーダンス特性をもった材料を用いると、 被検査物と の境界で境界エコーが低減するので、 欠陥検査にとって有利となる。 音響ィ ンピーダンス変化を有するマッチング材の製造は使用する材料によって選択 されるが、 ポリマ一材料に音響ィンピーダンスの大きな金属粉末を添加しな がら遠心成型する方法や、 音響インピーダンスの異なるポリマーシー トを多 重に重ねていく方法が提案される。
本発明の第 2の実施の形態を図 5を用いて説明する。
このフォーカス型縦波超音波探触子 1 は、 メインボディ 1 0 と、 このメイ ンボディ 1 0に選択的に取り替え可能に連結されるサブボディ 2 0 とから構 成されている。 つまり、 先の実施の形態の探触子の下部にサブボディ 2 0を 取り外し可能に取り付けた構成であり、 マッチング材 1 2がここでは、 メイ ンボディ 1 0に内装される第 1部材 1 2 と、 サブボディ 2 0に内装される第 2部材 2 1 とに分割されているのである。
メィンボディ 1 0は、 ダンパ一材 1 3によって裏打ちされた湾曲状圧電素 子 1 1 と、 圧電素子 1 1の前面、 つまり凹曲面に密着されている第 1マッチ ング材 1 2 と、 これらの一体物を内装している力ップ状の本体ケース 1 4を 備えている。 圧電素子 1 1に設けられているここでは図示されていない薄膜 電極は電線 1 5を介して本体ケース 1 4に設けられたコネクタ一 1 6に接続 されている。 第 1部材 1 2は、 ここでも被検査物と同じ材料であるポリェチ レンから作られており、 圧電素子 1 1 とは反対側の面は精密に平坦に仕上げ られており、 本体ケース 1 4の端面からわずかに突出させている。
サブボディ 2 0は、 第 2部材 2 1 とこの第 2部材 2 1 を外嵌しているサブ ケース 2 2 とを備えている。 第 2部材 2 1 も第 1部材 1 2 と同じポリェチレ ンから作られており、 第 1部材 1 2 と密着する面は平坦に精密仕上げされて おり、 他方の面は走査面であるポリエチレン管 E F継手 3の外壁面 3 aにぴ つたり と合うように凹面に加工されている。 サブケース 2 2の内壁面に設け られた雌ねじ部 2 2 aは本体ケース 1 4の外壁面に設けられた雄ねじ部
1 4 aに螺合することにより、 本体ケース 1 4 とサブケース 2 2は一体化さ れ、 第 1部材 1 2 と第 2部材 2 1 の突き合わせ接触するが、 その際互いの接 触面にグリセリ ンなどの力ップリ ング剤を塗布しておく ことで、 超音波音響 学的な密着を確保する。
本体ケース 1 4にサブケース 2 2を組み付けることにより、 フォーカス型 縦波超音波探触子 1 の完成品となるが、 そのフォーカス距離はサブボディ 2 0の第 2部材 2 1の長さを選択することによって所望のものにすることが できる。 つまり、 図 5から明らかなように、 第 1マツチング材 1 2の軸方向 長さ : L 1 は一定であり、 第 2マッチング材 2 1 の軸方向長さ : L 2 は選択 するサブボディ 2 (おによって異なり、 圧電素子 1 1 のフォーカス距離 : Lは 曲面形状から決定されるので、 適切な第 2マツチング材 2 1 の長さ : L 2 を 有するサブボディ 2 0を選択することにより、 ポリエチレン管 E F継手 3の 融着部領域にフォーカス点をもってく ることができる。 サブボディ 2 0の選 択の際には、 第 2部材 2 1の被検査物側の面の形状がポリエチレン管 E F継 手 3の外壁面 3 aに適合したものを選択することも重要であり、 これにより 第 2部材 2 1 と外壁面 3 a との間にカップリ ング剤 6を薄く介在させるだけ で、 良好な密着性が得られる。 図 6には、 短いサブボディ 2 0を装着したフ ォ一カス型縦波超音波探触子 1が示されている。
上記説明から明らかなように、 この実施形態のフォーカス型縦波超音波探 触子 1では、 第 1部材 1 2 と第 2部材 2 1力 フォーカス距離のマツチング のために機能しているとともに、 互いの境界から欠陥判定の障害となるよう な境界エコーが生じないようにそれらの音響ィンピーダンスもマッチングを とっていることが重要である。
これまでの実施の形態の説明では、 圧電素子 1 1 と してポリマー圧電膜が 用いられたが、 これに代えてチタン酸ジルコン酸鉛、 ニオブ酸鉛、 ニオブ酸 リチウムなどの圧電性金属酸化物を採用しても良い。 この発明で第 1 に重要 な点は、 フォーカス型縦波超音波探触子 1において、 圧電素子 1 1 とマッチ ング材と被検査物 3の音響ィンピーダンスを適切に選択することである。 ま た、 上述した圧電素子 1 1 は球面状の湾曲体形状を備えており、 いわゆるポ イン トフォ一カスタイプであつたが、 これに代えて、 円柱周面状の湾曲体形 状を備えることでラインフォーカスタイプとすることも本発明の枠内に入る ものである。
次に、 このようなフォーカス型縦波超音波探触子 1 を用いた超音波探傷に おける超音波探傷装置のための欠陥評価装置について説明する ;
図 7は、 本発明による欠陥評価装置 5 0を備えた超音波探傷装置 1 0 0の ブロ ック図である。 超音波探傷装置 1 0 0は、 超音波探触子 1 を介して被検 査物に超音波を送信して、 戻ってきたエコーを評価する。 ここでは、 2本の ポリエチレン管 2を突き合わせ接合するポリエチレン管 E F (熱溶融) 継手 3の接合状態の超音波検査のために用いられている。 このポリエチレン管 E F継手 3は、 突き合わされたポリエチレン管 2に外嵌した状態で、 内壁部 に軸方向に螺旋状に巻かれた融着用ワイヤー 4に給電して加熱し、 その周辺 部を溶かすことにより、 ポリエチレン管 E F継手 3の内壁面 3 b とポリェチ レン管 2の外壁面 2 aを融着させて、強固な密封接続を実現するものである。 この融着作業において、 例えば、 砂、 ほこり、 ごみ、 水、 泥水などがポリェ チレン管 E F継手 3の内壁面 3 b とポリェチレン管 2の外壁面 2 a との間に 入り込んでいたり していると、 未融着部 5が生じる。 このような未融着部 5 をポリエチレン管 E F継手 3の外壁面 3 aから超音波探触子 1 を用いて探す のである。 融着用ワイヤー 4は管軸方向に螺旋状に巻かれているので、 超音 波探触子 1からの超音波ビーム上にこの融着用ワイヤー 4が位置する場合、 融着用ワイヤー 4からのエコーが生じることになる。 もちろん超音波探触子 1 からの超音波ビーム上に未融着部 5が位置する場合、 未融着部 5からのェ コ一が欠陥エコーと して検出される。 さらに、 前述したように内壁面 3 b と 外壁面 2 a との間に入り込んだ水や泥水の加熱等により融着用ワイヤ一 4の 周辺に生じた空隙 5 aからの欠陥エコーが融着用ワイヤー 4からのエコーに 重なるような形で生じる。 上述したような欠陥エコーを確実に検出評価するために、 欠陥評価装置 5 0は、 第 1ゲート回路 5 1 と第 2ゲート回路 5 2、 そして第 1評価回路 5 3 と第 2評価回路 5 4、 さらに被検査物であるポリエチレン管 E F継手 3 の音速を評価する音速評価回路 5 5を備えている。 図 7からよく理解できる ように、 第 1ゲ一ト回路 5 1で生成された第 1ゲー ト 3 1 と、 第 2ゲー ト回 路 5 2で生成された第 2ゲ一 卜 3 2は画像表示部 5 6によって場合よつて生 じるエコーとともにモニタ一 5 7に表示される。 融着用ワイヤー 4からのェ コ一と空隙 5 aからのエコーは第 1ゲー ト 3 1 に、 未融着部 5からのエコー は第 2ゲート 3 2に検出される。
第 1ゲー ト 3 1によって検出されたエコーは電気信号と して第 1評価回路 5 3に送られ、 前設定されたしきい値と比較され、 内壁面 3 b と外壁面 2 a との間に入り込んだ水や泥水の加熱等により融着用ワイヤー 4の周辺に生じ た空隙 5 aからの欠陥エコーであるかどうかが判定される。 つまり、 融着用 ワイヤー 4に直接反射して戻ってく るエコーの振幅は予め推測できるため、 それを越えるエコーは欠陥エコーと判定される。 第 2ゲー ト 3 2によって検 出されたエコーは電気信号と して第 2評価回路 5 4に送られ、 前設定された しきい以上の振幅を有しておれば、 未融着欠陥を示す欠陥エコーと判定され る。 このことを例示するために、 図 8に第 1 ゲート 3 1によって検出された 欠陥エコーを示すモニタ一画面とその際の超音波探触子 1の走査位置とが示 されており、 図 9に第 2ゲー ト 3 2によって検出された欠陥エコーを示すモ ユタ一画面とその際の超音波探触子 1の走査位置とが示されている。 なお、 ここでは横軸と しての超音波伝播時間軸の 0点は送信パルス位置ではなく、 モニタ画面の見やすさを考慮して適当に設定された位置となっている。
上述したような、 ゲ一 トによって検出されたエコーを評価して欠陥判定を 行う場合、 ゲー トの設定が重要となる。 通常、 ゲートは、 被検査物内の欠陥 発生領域に対応する時間軸領域に設定されるが、 この場合被検査物中の音速 が一定であることが条件となる。 ここで取り上げているポリエチレン管 E F 継手 3の接合状態の超音波検査などでは、 この検査が熱溶融させた直後に行 われることから、 検査作業中にわたって、 刻々と材料温度が変化し、 それに 伴って音速も変化する。 このため、 正確なゲー ト位置を得るためには音速変 化に追従してゲート位置を変更する必要がある。
次に、 本発明における欠陥評価装置 5 0のゲー 卜設定動作を説明する。 超音波探触子 1がポリエチレン管 E F継手 3の外壁面 3 aを走査して、 超音 波を入射すると、 外壁面 3 aから距離 : D 1 離れた位置にある融着用ワイヤ 一 4からのエコーが表面エコーから時間 : t 1 離れた位置にワイヤーエコー が生じるので、 まずこの領域に、 時間 : t l 一 αから t l + αまでの 2 αの 時間幅を有する第 1ゲー ト 3 1 を設定し、 さらに、 融着用ワイヤ一 4から距 離 : D 2 離れた位置に、 ポリエチレン管 E F継手 3の内壁面 3 b とポリェチ レン管 2の外壁面 2 a との間の未融着欠陥領域があるので、時間: t 1 + t 2— ]3から t 1 + t 2 + βまでの 2 βの時間幅を有する第 2ゲー ト 3 2を設定す る。 その際表面エコーが明確に生じない場合は、 送信パルスを基準と して擬 似的な表面エ コ ー位置を求め、 そこをゲー ト設定の基準と しても良い。 これ らのゲ一ト設定の様子は図 1 0に模式的に示されている。
同時に、 音速評価回路 5 2は、 ポリエチレン管 E F継手 3の外壁面 3 aか ら反射されてく る表面エコー及びポリエチレン管 2の內壁面 2 bから反射さ れてく る、 いわゆる底面エコーを検出し、 その間の時間 : t 3 を計測する。 この時間は、 被検査物中の音速の変化に反比例するので、 これにより音速変 化を即座に評価することができる。 溶着後数十分が経過して、 温度が下がり、 ポリエチレン管 2やポリエチレン管 E F継手 3中の音速が再び上昇するが、 それに追従して変更されていく第 1ゲー ト 3 1 と第 2ゲー ト 3 2の様子は図 1 1に模式的に示されている。 ここで取りあげられた被検査物、 ポリエチレ ン管 2とポリエチレン管 E F継手 3の場合、 融着直後の温度におけるワイヤ ェコ一は通常の温度におけるワイヤエコーに比べ、 約 5 /Z s程度遅れている ことが実験で確かめられている。
第 1ゲー ト 3 1 と第 2ゲー ト 3 2が最初に設定された時点の音速 (ここで は図 1 0に示された表面エコーと底面エコーとの時間間隔 : t 3 に対応する) を基準と して音速 (時間間隔) が変化するに従って、 その変化量:
( t 3 - T 3 ) / t 3 に応じて第 1ゲー ト 3 1 と第 2ゲー ト 3 2の位置が変 更され、 それぞれ音速変化に追従した時間間隔 : T 1 と T 2 となる位置にく る。 これにより、 温度変動により、 ワイヤーエコーや欠陥エコーの生じる時 間位置がずれても、 そのためのゲー ト 3 1 、 3 2も追従しているので、 確実 に欠陥エコーを検出することができる。 なお、 ここでは、 各ゲー ト幅 : 2 α と 2 は一定にしているが、 温度差による音速差が大きい場合は、 より精密 なゲート幅が要求される場合は、 ゲート幅も音速変化に追従して変更すると よい。
図 7で示したような、 ボリエチレン管 2を突き合わせ接合するポリエチレ ン管 E F (熱溶融) 継手 3の接合状態の超音波検査では、 被検査物中での温 度傾斜がかなり特異的であるため、 つまりポリエチレンの熱伝導が遅いので 加熱源と してのワイヤ一 4から離れるほど温度差が生じることから、 融着用 ワイヤー 4周辺部が高温で、 そこから内外に離れるほど急激に温度が低下し ているという現象となる。この温度差は時間経過とともに解消されていく力;、 このように探傷時において被検査物中での温度傾斜、 結果的には被検査物中 で音速の相違が大きい場合、 探傷領域近傍での音速をチェックすることが重 要となるので、 この例では、 表面エコーと底面エコーに基づいた平均的な音 速測定の結果に基づくゲー ト設定においてさらなる補正を行うことが好まし レ、。 例えば、 ワイヤ一エコーと底面エコーに基づいた平均的な音速測定の結 果に基づくゲート設定を行う とよい。 さらに、 融着用ワイヤー 4 と未融着欠 陥領域との間の温度変化はワイヤ一エコーと底面エコーが発生する領域の平 均的な温度変化より無視できない程度に大きい場合では、 経験的に求められ た補正係数によって第 2ゲ一 ト 3 2の位置と必要の場合ゲー ト幅をさらに補 正してもよレ、。
上述した実施の形態の説明では、 超音波探傷中に被検査物中の音速が変動 するものと して、 2本のポリエチレン管 2を突き合わせ接合するポリエチレ ン管 E F (熱溶融) 継手 3の接合状態の超音波検査を取り上げたが、 もちろ ん本発明の超音波探傷装置用欠陥評価装置は、 ポリエチレン以外のポリォレ フィン樹脂系の同様な管の熱溶融継手の接合状態の超音波検査やその他検査 中に音速変化が生じる被検査物の超音波探傷に広く利用することができる。 産業上の利用可能性
本発明によるフォーカス型縦波超音波探触子は、 鋼などの金属に較べ、 一 般的に音波の減衰率が高く、 通常の超音波探触子を用いると低い S Z N比を もった検出信号しか得られないポリォレフィ ン樹脂管などの熱溶融継手の接 合状態の検査に用いるのに適している。 同様に、 本発明による超音波探傷装 置用欠陥評価装置は、 複雑な反射エコーや音速変動を考慮しなければならな い熱溶融継手の接合状態の検査に用いるのに特に適している。

Claims

請 求 の 範 囲
1 . 湾曲状圧電素子と、 前記湾曲状圧電素子の凹面に密着した入力端面と 被検査物と してのポリマ一材料の表面に適合した出力端面とを有するマッチ ング材とを備え、
前記マツチング材の音響ィンピ一ダンスが前記被検査物の音響ィンビーダ ンスに適合させられていることを特徴とするポリマー材料検査用フォーカス 型縦波超音波探触子。
2 . 湾曲状圧電素子と、 前記湾曲状圧電素子の凹面に密着した入力端面と 被検査物と してのボリ 材料の表面に適合した出力端面とを有するマッチ ング材とを備え、
前記マツチング材の音響ィンピーダンスが前記湾曲状圧電素子の音響ィン ピーダンスに適合させられていることを特徴とするポリマ一材料検査用フォ —カス型縦波超音波探触子。
3 . 湾曲状圧電素子と、 前記湾曲状圧電素子の凹面に密着した入力端面と 被検査物と してのポリマー材料の表面に適合した出力端面とを有するマッチ ング材とを備え、
前記マッチング材の音響インピーダンスが前記被検査物の音響インピーダ ンスに適合させられており、 かつ
前記マツチング材の音響ィンピ一ダンスは前記湾曲状圧電素子の音響ィン ピーダンスに適合させられていることを特徴とする請求項 1に記載のポリマ —材料検査用フォーカス型縦波超音波探触子。
4 . 前記湾曲状圧電素子はポリマー圧電材料からなることを特徴とする請 求項 1 3のいずれかに記載のポリマー材料検査用フォーカス型縦波超音波 探触子。
5 . 前記マッチング材の音響インピーダンスは、 前記入力端面から出力端 面にかけて前記湾曲状圧電素子から発射された縦波超音波の伝播方向に関し て前記湾曲状圧電素子の音響インピーダンスに適合する値から前記被検査物 の音響ィンピーダンスに適合する値に向かって変化していることを特徴とす る請求項 1 4のいずれかに記載のポリ 材料検査用フォーカス型縦波超 音波探触子。
6 . 前記マツチング材は第 1マッチング材と第 2マツチング材とに分割さ れており、 前記第 1マツチング材は一方の端面が前記入力端面と して形成さ れるとともに他方の端面が第 1移行端面と して形成され、 前記第 2マツチン グ材は一方の端面が前記出力端面と して形成されるとともに他方の端面が前 記第 1移行端面に密着可能な第 2移行端面と して形成され、 前記第 1移行端 面の音響ィンピーダンスは前記第 2移行端面の音響ィンピーダンスに適合さ せられていることを特徴とする請求項 1 5のいずれかに記載のポリマー材 料検査用フォーカス型縦波超音波探触子。
7 . 前記第 2マッチング材は前記第 1 マッチング材に対して脱着自在であ ることを特徴とする請求項 6に記載のポリマー材料検査用フォーカス型縦波 超音波探触子。
8 . 被検査物と してのポリマ一材料に超音波を送信して、 そこから戻って くるエコーを受信する超音波探傷装置のための欠陥評価装置において、 前記被検査物内の所定反射源からのエコーのための第 1 ゲー トを生成する 第 1 ゲー ト回路と、 前記第 1エコーから所定時間遅れの位置に欠陥検出用の 第 2ゲー 卜を生成する第 2ゲー ト回路と、 前記第 1エコーの振幅が所定レべ ルを越えた場合欠陥検出と判定する第 1評価回路と、 前記第 2ゲー 卜に発生 したエコーが生じた場合欠陥検出と判定する第 2評価回路とが備えられてい ることを特徴とする超音波探傷装置のための欠陥評価装置。
9 . 前記第 2ゲー 卜回路は前記第 1エコーと前記第 2ゲートの時間間隔を 前記被検査物中の音速の変化に追従して変更することを特徴とする請求項 8 に記載の欠陥評価装置。
1 0 . 前記第 1 ゲート回路は表面エコーと前記第 1ゲー トの時間間隔を前記 被検査物中の音速の変化に追従して変更することを特徴とする請求項 8に記 載の超音波探傷装置のための欠陥評価装置。
1 1 . 前記被検査物中の音速の変化が前記被検査物内の 2つの所定反射源か らのエコーの時間間隔の計測によって求められることを特徴とする請求項 9 又は 1 0に記載の超音波探傷装置のための欠陥評価装置。
