空気極側に供給された酸素は、 空気極層内の気孔を通って固体電解質層との界 面近傍に到達し、 この部分で、 空気極から電子を受け取って酸化物イオン (O2 一) にイオン化される。 この酸化物イオンは、 燃料極の方 ]¾に向かって固体電解 質層内を拡散移動する。 燃料極との界面近傍に到達した酸化物イオンは、 この部 分で、 燃料ガスと反応して反応生成物 (H20、 C02等) を生じ、 燃料極に電 子を放出する。

固体電解質層は、 酸化物イオンの移動媒体であると同時に、 燃料ガスと空気を 直接接触させないための隔壁としても機能するので、 ガス不透過性の緻密な構造 となっている。 この固体電解質層は、 酸化物イオン伝導性が高く、 空気極側の酸 化性雰囲気から燃料極側の還元性雰囲気までの条件下で化学的に安定で、 熱衝撃 に強い材料から構成する必要があり、 かかる要件を満たす材料として、 イツトリ ァを添加した安定化ジルコニァ (YSZ) が一般的に使用されている。
一方、 電極である空気極 (力ソード) 層と燃料極 (アノード) 層はいずれも電 子伝導性の高い材料から構成する必要がある。 空気極材料は、 700°C前後の高 温の酸化性雰囲気中で化学的に安定でなければならないため、 金属は不適当であ り、 電子伝導性を持つベロブスカイト型酸化物材料、 具体的には L aMn03 も しくは &( 003 、 または、 これらの L aの一部を S r、 C a等に置換した固 溶体が一般に使用されている。 また、 燃料極材料は、 N i、 Coなどの金属、 或 いは N i— YSZ、 Co—YS Zなどのサ一メットが一般的である。
固体酸化物型燃料電池には、 1000°C前後の高温で作動させる高温作動型の ものと、 700°C前後の低温で作動させる低温作動型のものとがある。 低温作動 型の固体酸化物型燃料電池は、 例えば電解質であるィットリァを添加した安定化 ジルコニァ (YS Z) の厚さを 10 m程度まで薄膜化して、 電解質の抵抗を低 くすることにより、 低温でも燃料電池として発電するように改良された発電セル を使用する。
高温の固体酸化物型燃料電池では、 セパレ一夕には、 例えばランタンクロマイ ト (L aC r〇3 ) 等の電子伝導性を有するセラミックスが用いられるが、 低温 作動型の固体酸化物燃料電池では、 ステンレス等の金属材料を使用することがで さる。
また、 固体酸化物型燃料電池の構造には、 円筒型、 モノリス型、 及び平板型の 3種類が提案されている。 それらの構造のうち、 低温作動型の固体酸化物型燃料 電池には、 金属のセパレー夕を使用できることから、 金属のセパレ一夕に形状付 与し易い平板型の構造が適している。
平板型の固体酸化物型燃料電池のスタックは、 発電セル、 集電体、 セパレー夕 を交互に積層した構造を持つ。 一対のセパレー夕が発電セルを両面から挟んで、 一方は空気極集電体を介して空気極と、 他方は燃料極集電体を介して燃料極と接 03 02202 している。 燃料極集電体には、 N i基合金等のスポンジ状の多孔質体を使用する ことができ、 空気極集電体には、 A g基合金等の同じくスポンジ状の多孔質体を 使用することができる。 スポンジ状多孔質体は、 集電機能、 ガス透過機能、 均一 ガス拡散機能、 クッション機能、 熱膨脹差吸収機能等を兼ね備えるので、 多機能 の集電体材料として適している。
セパレータは、 発電セル間を電気接続すると共に、 発電セルに対してガスを供 給する機能を有するもので、 燃料ガスをセパレ一夕外周面から導入してセパレー 夕の燃料極層に対向する面から吐出させる燃料通路と、 酸化剤ガスをセパレータ 外周面から導入してセパレー夕の酸化剤極層に対向する面から吐出させる酸化剤 通路とをそれぞれ有している。
<発明が解決しょうとする課題 >
(第 1の課題)
ところで、 低温作動の固体酸化物型燃料電池の場合、 セパレー夕は厚さ 5〜1 0 mm程度の金属板 (ステンレス等) を用い、 その中央部に側面より導入された 燃料ガスおよび酸化剤ガスを集電体に吐出するためのガス吐出孔を設けた構造の ものが知られている。
図 8はその一例を示す燃料電池スタックの要部断面図で、 図 8中、 符号 3は燃 料極層、 符号 6は燃料極集電体、 符号 8はセパレ一夕、 符号 1 1は燃料通路、 符 号 2 5はガス吐出孔であり、 矢印は燃料ガスの透過状態を示している。
ところが、 このような従来型のセパレータ構造は以下のような問題を有してい た。
即ち、 セパレータ 8の中央部より吐出した燃料ガスは、 多孔質クッション材ょ り成る燃料極集電体 6を通して燃料極層 3の全域に供給される構造であるが、 実 際はガスの吐出孔 2 5付近での電極反応によって燃料ガスが大幅に消費され、 ガ ス吐出孔 2 5から遠ざかるに連れてガス濃度が低下するといつた問題である。 こ のため、 電極全域において電極反応が均一に行われず、 発電セル内で温度勾配が 生じ、 その際の熱応力によって発電セルが破壊されたり、 非効率的な発電による 発電特性の低下 (発電量が発電セルの中央部で大きく周辺部で小さくなる) を招 くこととなった。 この問題は特に燃料極側で顕著であった。 また、 厚さ 5〜1 0 mmといった肉厚の金属板を使用することにより、 単セル 自体の重量が重くなり、 複数の電池ス夕ックを縦置きにして構成される固体酸化 物型燃料電池の場合にあっては、 下方に配置される電池スタックの発電セルがそ の重圧によって破損し易いといった問題がある。 このため、 現状ではセル構成を 加重に耐え得る積層数に制限せざるを得ないといった問題が残されている。 因み に、 従来構造の場合、 電池スタックの重量は 1 k g程度有り、 この電池スタック を多数積層した電池モジュールの総重量は 2 5 k g程になる。 従って、 その支持 構造も自ずと複雑になってくる。
(第 2の課題)
既述のように、 従来の固体酸化物型燃料電池は、 電極層とセパレー夕の間に多 孔質クッション材より成る集電体を配置し、 この集電体を通してセパレ一夕から 各電極層にガスを分配供給しているが、 従来構造では集電体内でのガスの滞留時 間が短いため、 電極反応に預からない燃料ガスが発電セル外に排出されてしまい 、 その分発電効率が低下するという問題があった。
また、 従来構造の場合は、 発電セル外周部でのガスの線速度は遅くなつており 、 このため、 発電セルの外周部から酸化剤である空気を巻き込んで発電セル内部 においても燃焼反応が起こり易く、 この燃焼反応により電極反応に使用可能な燃 料ガスが消費されてしまい、 発電性能が低下するという問題もあった。
このような不都合な現象は、 特にセパレ一夕の中央部から燃料ガスと酸化剤ガ スを燃料極集電体および酸化剤極集電体に供給する構造のセパレー夕を備えた燃 料電池スタツクにおいて顕著に発生した。 発 明 の 開 示
上記問題に鑑み、 本発明の第 1の目的は、 集電体内の電極反応を均一にするこ とにより発電効率の向上を図ると共に、 セパレ一夕の軽量化を図って破損事故等 の弊害を防止した平板型の固体酸化物型燃料電池および固体酸化物型燃料電池用 セパレ一夕を提供することを目的としている。
すなわち、 請求項 1に記載の本発明は、 固体電解質層の両面に燃料極層と酸化 剤極層を配置し、 当該燃料極層と酸化剤極層の外側にそれぞれ燃料極集電体と酸 PC漏 3/02202 化剤極集電体を配置し、 当該燃料極集電体と酸化剤極集電体の外側にセパレー夕 を配置し、 当該セパレー夕から前記燃料極集電体および酸化剤極集電体を介して 前記燃料極層および酸化剤極層に燃料ガスおよび酸化剤ガスを供給する平板型の 固体酸化物型燃料電池において、 前記セパレー夕は、 導入されたガスをその中央 部から吐出するための第 1のガス吐出孔と周辺部に沿って環状に吐出するための 複数の第 2のガス吐出孔を有することを特徴としている。
本構成では、 セパレー夕の中央部と周辺部からはガスが輪状に吐出されるため 、 集電体全体に十分に行き渡らせることができる。 これにより、 電極全域に亘っ て均一な電極反応が行われるようになり、 中央部と周辺部とで発電量の差を無く した効率的な発電を行うことができる。
また、 請求項 2に記載の本発明は、 請求項 1に記載の平板型の固体酸化物型燃 料電池において、 前記セパレー夕は、 少なくとも、 前記第 1のガス吐出孔と第 2 のガス吐出孔を設けた金属製薄板、 および凸凹状に加工した金属製薄板とを含む 複数の金属製薄板を積層して構成されることを特徴としている。
本構成により、 セパレー夕自体を軽量化できると共に、 金属製薄板の凸凹がガ ス流路を型成するため、 導入ガスはセパレ一夕内全域に満逼なく拡散されていき
、 セパレ一夕中央部の第 1のガス吐出孔へはもとより、 周辺部に環状に型成した 第 2のガス吐出孔へのガス供給も確実にする。
また、 請求項 3に記載の本発明は、 請求項 2に記載の平板型の固体酸化物型燃 料電池において、 前記第 1のガス吐出孔と第 2のガス吐出孔を設けた金属製薄板 が少なくとも前記燃料極集電体側に配設されて成ることを特徴としている。
集電体内における電極反応の不均一性は、 特に燃料ガスの供給側で顕著である 。 これは、 燃料ガスは空気 (酸化剤ガス) のように大量に供給することができず 、 供給量が限定されているためである。 そこで、 本構成では、 少なくとも燃料極 集電体と接するセパレー夕部分にこのようなガス吐出構造を適用して燃料極層に おける電極反応の不均一性を改善するようにしている。
また、 請求項 4に記載の本発明は、 各電極の外側に配した集電体に接して電極 側にガス供給用のガス通路を形成する固体酸化物型燃料電池用セパレー夕であつ て、 導入されたガスをその中央部から吐出するための第 1のガス吐出孔と周辺部 に沿って環状に吐出するための複数の第 2のガス吐出孔を有することを特徴とし ている。
また、 請求項 5に記載の本発明は、 請求項 4に記載の固体酸化物型燃料電池用 セパレ一夕において、 少なくとも、 前記第 1のガス吐出孔と第 2のガス吐出孔を 設けた金属製薄板、 および凸凹状に加工した金属製薄板とを含む複数の金属製薄 板を積層して構成されることを特徴としている。
また、 請求項 6に記載の本発明は、 請求項 5に記載の固体酸化物型燃料電池用 セパレ一夕において、 前記第 1のガス吐出孔と第 2のガス吐出孔を設けた金属製 薄板が、 少なくとも燃料極集電体側に配設されて成ることを特徴としている。 更に、 本発明の別の目的は、 上記従来技術の問題に鑑み、 集電体内における燃 料ガスや酸化剤ガスの利用率を増大することにより、 発電効率の向上を図った固 体酸化物型燃料電池および固体酸化物型燃料電池用セパレー夕を提供することで ある。
すなわち、 請求項 7に記載の発明は、 固体電解質層の両面に燃料極層と酸化剤 極層を配置し、 当該燃料極層と酸化剤極層の外側にそれぞれ多孔質体より成る燃 料極集電体と酸化剤極集電体を配置し、 当該燃料極集電体と酸化剤極集電体の外 側にセパレー夕を配置し、 当該セパレー夕から前記燃料極集電体および酸化剤極 集電体を介して前記燃料極層および酸化剤極層に燃料ガスおよび酸化剤ガスを供 給する固体酸化物型燃料電池において、 前記セパレー夕の前記集電体と接する側 の面に窪みを設け、 当該集電体内におけるガスの滞留体積を大きくしたことを特 徴としている。
上記構成では、 スポンジ状の多孔質で成る集電体がセパレー夕の窪みによって 膨れるため集電体の体積が増加し、 ガスの供給量が一定であれば、 その分ガスの 滞留時間は長くなる (ガスの透過速度が遅くなる) 。 これにより、 ガスと電極層 の反応が良好に行われるようになり、 発電性能が向上する。
また、 請求項 8に記載の発明は、 固体電解質層の両面に燃料極層と酸化剤極層 を配置し、 当該燃料極層と酸化剤極層の外側にそれぞれ多孔質体より成る燃料極 集電体と酸化剤極集電体を配置し、 当該燃料極集電体と酸化剤極集電体の外側に セパレー夕を配置し、 当該セパレー夕から前記燃料極集電体および酸化剤極集電 体を介して前記燃料極層および酸化剤極層に燃料ガスおよび酸化剤ガスを供給す る固体酸化物型燃料電池において、 前記セパレー夕の前記集電体と接する側の面 の周縁部分を膨出し、 当該集電体外周部でのガスの線速度を上昇させたことを特 徴としている。
外周部での排出ガスの線速度が上昇することにより、 外周部からの空気の巻き 込みが防止され、 特に、 燃料極層の周縁部においては燃料ガスの濃度を高めた状 態とすることができ、 発電性能が向上する。
また、 請求項 9に記載の発明は、 固体電解質層の両面に燃料極層と酸化剤極層 を配置し、 当該燃料極層と酸化剤極層の外側にそれぞれ多孔質体より成る燃料極 集電体と酸化剤極集電体を配置し、 当該燃料極集電体と酸化剤極集電体の外側に セパレ一夕を配置し、 当該セパレー夕から前記燃料極集電体および酸化剤極集電 体を介して前記燃料極層および酸化剤極層に燃料ガスおよび酸化剤ガスを供給す る固体酸化物型燃料電池において、 前記セパレ一夕の前記集電体と接する側の面 に窪みを設けると共に、 周縁部分を膨出したことを特徴としている。
本構成では、 集電体内部におけるガスの透過速度を遅くして電極反応を良好に すると共に、 周縁部分でのガスの線速度を速くし、 外周部からの空気の巻き込み を防止することができる。 これにより、 発電性能を向上できる。
また、 請求項 1 0に記載の本発明は、 請求項 7から請求項 9までの何れかに記 載の固体酸化物型燃料電池において、 前記セパレ一夕の表面形状が少なくとも前 記燃料極集電体と接する面に成されていることを特徴としている。
集電体内部でのガスの未反応現象は、 主に燃料ガスの供給側で起きる。 これは 、 燃料ガスは空気 (酸化剤ガス) のように大量に供給でず、 供給量が限定されて いるためである。 そこで、 本構成では、 少なくとも燃料集電体と接するセパレ一 夕の面に窪みや膨出部を設けることにより、 燃料集電体における前記したガスの 未反応現象や空気の巻き込み現象を改善するようにしている。
また、 請求項 1 1に記載の発明は、 請求項 7から請求項 1 0までの何れかに記 載の固体酸化物型燃料電池において、 前記燃料ガスおよび酸化剤ガスが、 前記セ パレー夕の中央部から前記燃料極集電体および酸化剤極集電体を介して前記燃料 極層および酸化剤極層に供給される構造を有することを特徴としている。 T JP03/02202 また、 請求項 1 2に記載の発明は、 各電極の外側に配した集電体に接して電極 側にガス供給用のガス通路を形成する固体酸化物型燃料電池用セパレー夕であつ て、 前記集電体と接する側の面に窪みを設け、 当該集電体内におけるガスの滞留 体積を大きくしたことを特徴としている。
また、 請求項 1 3に記載の発明は、 各電極の外側に配した集電体に接して電極 側にガス供給用のガス通路を形成する固体酸化物型燃料電池用セパレー夕であつ て、 前記集電体と接する側の面の周縁部分を膨出し、 当該集電体外周部でのガス の線速度を上昇させたことを特徴としている。
また、 請求項 1 4に記載の発明は、 各電極の外側に配した集電体に接して電極 側にガス供給用のガス通路を形成する固体酸化物型燃料電池用セパレ一夕であつ て、 前記集電体と接する側の面に窪みを設けると共に、 周縁部分を膨出したこと を特徴としている。

以下、 本発明の実施形態を図面に基づいて説明する。 尚、 説明を簡略化するた め、 以下の説明において従来と共通する部分については同一の符号を用いた。 (第 1の実施形態)
図 1、 図 2〜図 2 b及び図 3を参照して本発明の第 1の実施形態を説明する が、 先ず、 図 1に基づいて本実施形態に係る固体酸化物型燃料電池の構成を説明 する。
図 1において、 符号 1は燃料電池スタックを示し、 固体電解質層 2の両面に燃 料極層 3と空気極層 (酸化剤極層) 4を配した発電セル 5と、 燃料極層 3の外側 の燃料極集電体 6と、 空気極層 4の外側の空気極集電体 (酸化剤極集電体) 7と 、 各集電体 6、 7の外側のセパレー夕 8をそれぞれ順番に積層した構造を有する 。 本実施形態は、 燃料極集電体の外周端にガスシールがないシールレス構造に適 用して好適である。
ここで、 前記固体電解質層 2はイットリアを添加した安定化ジルコニァ (Y S Z ) 等で構成され、 前記燃料極層 3は N i、 C o等の金属あるいは N i _ Y S Z 、 C o— Y S Z等のサーメットで構成され、 前記空気極層 4は L a M n〇 3 、 L a C o O s 等で構成され、 前記燃料極集電体 6は N i基合金等のスポンジ状の多 孔質焼結金属板で構成され、 前記空気極集電体 7は A g基合金等のスポンジ状の 多孔質焼結金属板で構成されている。
前記セパレー夕 8は、 従来型と同様に発電セル 5間を電気接続すると共に、 発 電セル 5に対してガスを供給する機能を有するものであるが、 その構造は図 8に 示した従来型と相違している。
即ち、 従来のセパレー夕が肉厚の金属単板で作製されているのに対し、 本実施 形態のセパレー夕 8は、 図 2 a及び図 2 bに示すように、 複数のガス吐出孔を設 けた金属製の上板 2 1と、 表面を凸凹状に加工した中板 2 2と、 平坦形状の下板 2 3とを順次積層して成る 3層構造を有する。 これらは何れも、 ステンレス等で 成る薄い金属板が使用されている。
前記上板 2 1には、 中央部に第 1の燃料ガス吐出孔 2 5が形成され、 そして周 辺部に複数の第 2の燃料ガス吐出孔 2 4が輪状に整列して形成されており、 セパ レー夕 8の外周端面より燃料通路 1 1を介して導入された燃料ガスをこれらのガ ス吐出孔 2 4および 2 5より吐出し、 これと対面する燃料極集電体 6に供給する ようになつている。
前記中板 2 2は、 セパレ一夕としての強度と厚さを確保するため、 表面を凸凹 状に加工した板金材が使用されており、 これと上板 2 1と下板 2 3を図 2 bのよ うに組み合わせて中空状のセパレー夕 8を構成する。 この凸凹による中空部が燃 料ガスを拡散し易くするガス流路として機能し、 同時にセパレ一夕 8の軽量化が 実現できる。
尚、 この凸凹形状は板金の塑性加工によって形成することができ、 図示のよう な矩形状でなく波形 (波板) としても良い。 また、 エンボス加工により凸凹模様 を付けた板材を用いても良い。
前記下板 2 3は燃料極側と空気極側の隔壁を構成する。 既述した上板 2 1と中 板 2 3の組み合わせは燃料極側のセパレ一夕構造であり、 実際はこの下板 2 3を 隔て空気極側のセパレー夕部分が形成されることになるが、 本図ではその部分を 省略してある。
尚、 図 1に示す燃料スタック 1の両端のセパレー夕 8 ( 8 A、 8 B) は、 上記 した燃料極側もしくは空気極側セパレ一夕構造の何れか一方のみを有する。 以上の構成の平板型の固体酸化物型燃料電池では、 セパレー夕 8の中心部およ び周辺部から吐出する燃料ガスを燃料極集電体 6を通して燃料極層 3の全面に良 好な分布で行き渡らせることができ、 よって、 電極層の全面に亘つて効率的なガ ス反応が行われるようにできる。
即ち、 図 8に示すセパレータ 8の中央部のみにガス吐出孔 2 5を設けた従来型 では、 ガスが周辺部にまで十分に行き渡りにくい構造であることから、 電極反応 に偏りが生じ、 熱応力による発電セルの破壊や発電効率の低下といった問題を引 き起こしていたが、 本実施形態のセパレ一夕構造によれば、 図 3に示すように、 セパレー夕外周面より燃料通路 1 1を介して導入された燃料ガスがセパレー夕 8 の中空部 (凸凹) をガス通路として全面に拡散されるようになり、 中央部の第 1 の燃料ガス吐出孔 2 5および周辺部の複数の第 2の燃料ガス吐出孔 2 4より燃料 ガスを吐出し、 これと対面する燃料極集電体 6を通して燃料極層 3の全面に良好 な分布で行き渡らせることができる。 これにより、 電極全域に亘つて均一な電極 反応が行われるようになり、 中央部と周辺部とで発電量の差を無くした効率的な 発電を行うことができる。
加えて、 本実施形態のセパレー夕 8は、 内部を空洞とする積層構造としたので 、 肉厚構造の従来型に比べてセパレー夕自体の重量を大幅に軽減できる。 係る構 造は、 多数の電池スタツクを縦置きに積層した構造の燃料電池モジュールにおい ては、 下方部に位置する発電セルへの重圧を軽減するという面で極めて有効であ り、 これにより、 燃料電池モジュールの支持構造を簡略化し、 且つ、 電池スタツ ク積層数の制約を大幅に緩和することも可能となる。 これにより、 高起電力発電 が実現できる。
以上、 本実施形態では、 燃料極集電体 6に接するセパレー夕部分の構造につい て説明したが、 空気極集電体 7に接する側のセパレ一夕部分も同様の構造とする ことができる。 また、 上記以外のより単純なガス吐出構造 (例えば、 図 7に示す ように、 中央部のみのガス吐出構造) とすることもできる。 集電体内部での電極 反応の不均一性は、 特に燃料ガスの供給側で顕著であるため、 少なくとも燃料極 集電体 6と対面する側のセパレー夕部分に本実施形態の構造を適用することが重 要である。
また、 本実施形態では、 セパレー夕 8を 3枚の金属薄板による 3層構造とした が、 これに限定されるものではなく、 下板 2 3を省略した 2層構造とすることも 勿論可能である。 これにより、 セパレー夕 8の更なる軽量化が期待できる。 また、 本実施形態では、 発電セルの電解質にイットリアを添加した安定化ジル コニァ (Y S Z ) を用いる固体酸化物型燃料電池を示したが、 本発明は、 その他 の固体酸化物型燃料電池、 例えばセリア系電解質、 ガレ一ト型電解質を用いる固 体酸化物型燃料電池にも適用することができる。
(第 2の実施形態)
次に本発明の第 2実施形態について説明する。 図 4はセパレー夕の形状を示す 燃料電池スタックの要部断面を示し、 図 5 a〜図 5 dはセパレー夕の別の例を示 す同要部の断面を示し、 図 6は固体酸化物型燃料電池の分解断面を示し、 図 7は 本実施例における同要部の分解斜視を示す。
先ず、 図 6、 図 7に基づいて本実施形態に係る固体酸化物型燃料電池の構成を 説明する。
図 6中、 符号 1は燃料電池スタックを示し、 固体電解質層 2の両面に燃料極層 3と空気極層 (酸化剤極層) 4を配した発電セル 5と、 燃料極層 3の外側の燃料 極集電体 6と、 空気極層 4の外側の空気極集電体 (酸化剤極集電体) 7と、 各集 電体 6、 7の外側のセパレー夕 8を順番に積層した構造を有する。
' 前記固体電解質層 2はイットリアを添加した安定化ジルコニァ (Y S Z ) 等で 構成され、 前記燃料極層 3は N i、 C o等の金属あるいは N i— Y S Z、 C o— Y S Z等のサーメットで構成され、 前記空気極層 4は L a M n〇3 、 L a C o O 等で構成され、 前記燃料極集電体 6は N i基合金等のスポンジ状の多孔質焼結 金属板で構成され、 前記空気極集電体 7は A g基合金等のスポンジ状の多孔質焼 結金属板で構成され、 前記セパレ一タ 8はステンレス等で構成されている。
ここで、 集電体 6、 7を構成する多孔質金属板は、 次の工程を経ることで作製 したものである。 工程の順番は、 スラリ一調製工程—成形工程—発泡工程 乾燥 工程→脱脂工程→焼結工程である。
まず、 スラリー調製工程において、 金属粉末、 有機溶剤 (n—へキサン等) 、 界面活性剤 (ドデシルベンゼンスルホン酸ナトリウム等) 、 水溶性樹脂結合剤 ( ヒドロキシプロピルメチルセルロース等) 、 可塑剤 (グリセリン等) 、 水、 を混 ぜて発泡スラリーを調製する。 これを成形工程において、 ドクターブレード法に よりキヤリャシート上に薄板状に成形してグリーンシートを得る。 次に発泡工程 において、 このグリーンシートを高温高湿環境下で、 揮発性有機溶剤の蒸気圧及 び界面活性剤の起泡性を利用してスポンジ状に発泡させた後、 乾燥工程、 脱脂ェ 程、 焼成工程を経て多孔質金属板を得る。
この場合、 発泡工程において、 グリーンシートの内部に発生した気泡は、 全方 向からほぼ等価な圧力を受けて略球状の形状で成長する。 気泡が内部から拡散し て大気との界面に近づくと、 気泡は、 気泡と大気の間のスラリーの薄い部分へと 成長していき、 やがて気泡は破れて、 気泡内部の気体は、 できた小孔から大気中 へ拡散していく。 よって、 表面に開口した連続気孔を有する多孔質金属板が得ら 03 02202 れる。 集電体 6、 7はこのようにして作製した 3次元骨格構造を有する多孔質金 属板を円形にカットしたものである。
一方、 セパレ一夕 8は、 図 6、 図 7に示すように、 発電セル 5間を電気接続す ると共に、 発電セル 5に対してガスを供給する機能を有するもので、 燃料ガスを セパレ一タ 8の外周面から導入してセパレー夕 8の燃料極集電体 6に対向する面 のほぼ中央部から吐出させる燃料通路 1 1と、 酸化剤ガスをセパレー夕 8の外周 面から導入してセパレー夕 8の空気極集電体 7に対向する面から吐出させる酸化 剤通路 1 2とをそれぞれ有している。 ただし、 両端のセパレー夕 8 ( 8 A、 8 B ) は、 いずれかの通路 1 1、 1 2のみを有する。
そして、 本実施形態のセパレ一夕 8は、 図 8に示す平坦形状の従来型と相違し 、 図 4に示すように、 セパレー夕 8の燃料極集電体 6に接触する面は、 中央部分 を深くした窪み 8 aを設けることにより椀状とされており、 結果的に、 その周縁 部分 8 bが盛り上がった状態となっている。 既述したように、 燃料極集電体 6の 材料自体がスポンジ状の発泡体より構成されるので、 積層の際は、 この発泡体が セパレー夕 8の窪み形状に密接した状態で配設されることになる。 それ故、 図 4 のセパレータ 8を使用する限り、 燃料極集電体 6は中央部が従来型より膨らんだ 状態 (例えば、 従来型の場合の燃料極集電体 6の厚みを約 0 . 7 5 mmとすると 本実施形態の場合では中央部の最大厚みが約 1 . 5 mm程度に増大するようにす る) となり、 且つ、 周縁部分が従来型より薄くなつた状態 (例えば、 従来型の約 0 . 7 5 mmに対して約 0 . 2 mm程度とする) となっている。
また 燃料電池スタック 1の側方には、 図 6に示すように、 各セパレー夕 8の 燃料通路 1 1に接続管 1 3を通して燃料ガスを供給する燃料用マニホ一ルド 1 5 と、 各セパレー夕 8の酸化剤通路 1 2に接続管 1 4を通して酸化剤ガスを供給す る酸化剤用マ二ホールド 1 6とが、 発電セル 5の積層方向に延在して設けられて いる。
以上の構成の燃料電池では、 セパレー夕 8の中心部から吐出する燃料ガスを、 燃料極集電体 6を通して燃料極層 3の全面に良好な分布で行き渡らせ、 電極層の 全面に亘つて良好なガス反応が行われるようにできる。
即ち、 図 8に示すように、 平坦形状のセパレータ 8を有する従来型では、 燃料 極集電体 6も平坦な形状を成し、 特に、 燃料極集電体 6の中心部付近における燃 料ガス (図中の矢印) の透過速度が速いため (即ち、 集電体内でのガスの滞留時 間が短いため) 、 電極層の中心付近の電極反応が不十分となり、 且つ、 ガスが周 辺部にまで十分に行き渡りにくい状態にあることから電極反応に偏りが生じ、 反 応に預からない燃料ガスの多くが発電セル外に無駄に排出されてしまう可能性が あつたが、 図 4に示すセパレー夕 8を用いることにより、 燃料極集電体 6自体の 体積が増加するため、 セパレー夕 8からのガスの供給量が一定であれば、 その分 、 ガスの透過速度が遅くなり、 集電体内のガスの滞留時間を長くすることができ る。 これにより、 セパレー夕 8の中央部より吐出したガスは燃料集電体 6の中央 部から周辺部までの広い面を透過させて、 燃料ガスを燃料極層 3に均一に分配供 給することができ、 電極層の全面に亘つて良好なガス反応が行われるようになる 訳である。
また、 本実施形態のセパレー夕 8では、 周緣部を膨出した形状とすることによ り、 燃料極集電体 6の周縁部分の厚みが従来型より薄くなつた状態となっている ため、 特に、 シールレス構造 (燃料極集電体の外周端にガスシールがないタイプ ) の場合は、 集電体外周部での排出ガスの線速度が上昇し、 これにより、 外周部 からの空気の巻き込みが防止され、 発電セル内部の燃焼反応を阻止できるため、 燃料極層 3の周縁部においても燃料ガスの濃度を高めた状態を維持でき、 その分 、 発電性能の向上が見込めることになる。
以上、 本実施形態では、 燃料極集電体 6に接するセパレ一夕 8の面形状につい て説明したが、 空気極集電体 7に接する側も同様の形状とすることができる。 ま た、 セパレータ 8の表面形状は図 4に限るものではなく、 例えば、 図 5 a〜図 5 dに示すような種々の形状が考えられる。 図中、 符号 8 aは前記同様中央部若し くはその近傍の窪みであり、 符号 8 bは窪み 8 aの周縁にて盛り上がつた周縁部 分である。 要するに、 集電体の体積を大きくでき、 且つ、 周縁部分の厚みを薄く できるような形状であれば良い。
また、 集電体 6、 7の多孔質構造としては、 発泡体の他に、 メッシュやフェル トなども使用することができる。
また、 本実施形態では、 発電セルの電解質にイットリアを添加した安定化ジル JP03/02202 コニァ (Y S Z ) を用いる固体酸化物型燃料電池を示したが、 本発明は、 その他 の固体酸化物型燃料電池、 例えばセリア系電解質、 ガレ一ト型電解質を用いる固 体酸化物型燃料電池にも適用することができる。 産業上の利用可能性
(第 1実施形態の効果)
以上説明したように、 請求項 1、 請求項 4に記載の本発明によれば、 セパレー 夕の中央部と周辺部にガス吐出孔を設けたので、 ガスを集電体全体に十分に行き 渡らせることができる。 これにより、 電極全域に亘つて均一な電極反応が行われ るようになり、 発電セルの中央部と周辺部とで発電量の差を無くした効率的な発 電を行うことができる。
また、 請求項 2、 請求項 5に記載の本発明によれば、 少なくとも、 第 1のガス 吐出孔と第 2のガス吐出孔を設けた金属製薄板、 および凸凹状に加工した金属製 薄板とを含む複数の金属製薄板を積層してセパレー夕を構成したので、 セパレー 夕自体か軽量化され、 縦型燃料電池モジュールにおける電池スタックの積層数を 増やすことができるため、 高起電力発電が実現できる。 加えて、 凸凹がガス流路 を形成するため導入ガスが集電体全域に供給され易くなり、 集電体内部での電極 反応の不均一性を改善した効率的な発電が行えるようになる。
また、 請求項 3、 請求項 6に記載の本発明によれば、 上記した請求項 1と請求 項 2のセパレー夕構造を少なくとも燃料極集電体側のセパレー夕部分に適用する ようにしたので、 特に燃料ガスの供給側で顕著である燃料極集電体内部での電極 反応の不均一現象を効果的に改善することができ、 これにより燃料利用率の高い 効率的な発電を実現できる。
(第 2実施形態の効果)
また、 請求項 7、 請求項 1 2に記載の発明によれば、 セパレ一夕の集電体と接 する側の面に窪みを設けたので、 集電体内におけるガスの滞留体積が増加し、 そ の分ガスの滞留時間 (ガスの透過速度) が長くなる。 その結果、 ガスは集電体を 通してゆつくりと広範囲に行き亘り、 電極層の全面において良好なガス反応が行 われるようになる。 これにより、 燃料利用率や空気利用率が増大し、 発電性能が 向上する。
また、 請求項 8、 請求項 1 3に記載の発明によれば、 セパレ一夕の集電体と接 する側の面の周縁部分を膨出したので、 外周部での排出ガスの線速度が上昇し、 外周部からの空気の巻き込みが防止され、 発電セル内部の燃焼反応を阻止するこ とができる。 その結果、 特に、 燃料極層の周縁部においては燃料ガスの濃度を高 めた状態とすることができ、 よって、 発電性能が向上する。
また、 請求項 9、 請求項 1 4に記載の発明によれば、 セパレ一夕の集電体と接 する側の面に窪みを設けると共に、 周縁部分を膨出したので、 集電体内部のガス の透過速度を遅くして電極反応を良好にし、 且つ、 周縁部分での排出ガスの線速 度を速くし、 外周部からの空気の巻き込みを防止することができるといった請求 項 1と請求項 2に記載の効果が得られる。
また、 請求項 1 0、 請求項 1 5に記載の発明によれば、 上記したセパレー夕の 表面形状が少なくとも燃料極集電体と接する面において成されのようにしたので 、 燃料集電体におけるガスの未反応現象や空気の巻き込み現象が確実に改善され 、 発電性能が向上する。
また、 請求項 1 1に記載の発明によれば、 ガスがセパレー夕の中央部から燃料 極集電体および酸化剤極集電体を介して燃料極層および酸化剤極層に供給される 構造としたので、 ガスは集電体の中央部から周辺部までの広い範囲に亘つてゆつ くり透過して行き電極層に均一に分配供給され、 電極層の全面に亘つて良好なガ ス反応が行われるようになる。

Claims

請 求 の 範 囲
1 . 固体電解質層の両面に燃料極層と酸化剤極層を配置し、 当該燃料極層と酸化 剤極層の外側にそれぞれ燃料極集電体と酸化剤極集電体を配置し、 当該燃料極集 電体と酸化剤極集電体の外側にセパレ一夕を配置し、 当該セパレー夕から前記燃 料極集電体および酸化剤極集電体を介して前記燃料極層および酸化剤極層に燃料 ガスおよび酸化剤ガスを供給する平板型の固体酸化物型燃料電池において、 前記セパレー夕は、 導入されたガスをその中央部から吐出するための第 1のガ ス吐出孔と周辺部に沿って環状に吐出するための複数の第 2のガス吐出孔を有す ることを特徴とする平板型の固体酸化物型燃料電池。
2 . 前記セパレー夕は、 少なくとも、 前記第 1のガス吐出孔と第 2のガス吐出孔 を設けた金属製薄板、 および凸凹状に加工した金属製薄板とを含む複数の金属製 薄板を積層して構成されることを特徴とする請求項 1に記載の平板型の固体酸化 物型燃料電池。
3 . 前記第 1のガス吐出孔と第 2のガス吐出孔を設けた金属製薄板が、 少なくと も前記燃料極集電体側に配設されて成ることを特徴とする請求項 2に記載の平板 型の固体酸化物型燃料電池。
4 . 各電極の外側に配した集電体に接して電極側にガス供給用のガス通路を形成 する固体酸化物型燃料電池用セパレー夕であって、
導入されたガスをその中央部から吐出するための第 1のガス吐出孔と周辺部に 沿って環状に吐出するための複数の第 2のガス吐出孔を有することを特徴とする 固体酸化物型燃料電池用セパレー夕。
5 . 少なくとも、 前記第 1のガス吐出孔と第 2のガス吐出孔を設けた金属製薄板 、 および凸凹状に加工した金属製薄板とを含む複数の金属製薄板を積層して構成 されることを特徴とする請求項 4に記載の固体酸化物型燃料電池用セパレー夕。
6 . 前記第 1のガス吐出孔と第 2のガス吐出孔を設けた金属製薄板が、 少なくと も燃料極集電体側に配設されて成ることを特徴とする請求項 5に記載の固体酸化 物型燃料電池用セパレ一夕。
7 . 固体電解質層の両面に燃料極層と酸化剤極層を配置し、 当該燃料極層と酸化 剤極層の外側にそれぞれ多孔質体より成る燃料極集電体と酸化剤極集電体を配置 し、 当該燃料極集電体と酸化剤極集電体の外側にセパレー夕を配置し、 当該セパ レー夕から前記燃料極集電体および酸化剤極集電体を介して前記燃料極層および 酸化剤極層に燃料ガスおよび酸化剤ガスを供給する固体酸化物型燃料電池におい て、
前記セパレ一夕の前記集電体と接する側の面に窪みを設け、 当該集電体内にお けるガスの滞留体積を大きくしたことを特徴とする固体酸化物型燃料電池。
8 . 固体電解質層の両面に燃料極層と酸化剤極層を配置し、 当該燃料極層と酸化 剤極層の外側にそれぞれ多孔質体より成る燃料極集電体と酸化剤極集電体を配置 し、 当該燃料極集電体と酸化剤極集電体の外側にセパレータを配置し、 当該セパ レー夕から前記燃料極集電体および酸化剤極集電体を介して前記燃料極層および 酸化剤極層に燃料ガスおよび酸化剤ガスを供給する固体酸化物型燃料電池におい て、
前記セパレー夕の前記集電体と接する側の面の周縁部分を膨出し、 当該集電体 外周部でのガスの線速度を上昇させたことを特徴とする固体酸化物型燃料電池。
9 . 固体電解質層の両面に燃料極層と酸化剤極層を配置し、 当該燃料極層と酸化 剤極層の外側にそれぞれ多孔質体より成る燃料極集電体と酸化剤極集電体を配置 し、 当該燃料極集電体と酸化剤極集電体の外側にセパレー夕を配置し、 当該セパ レー夕から前記燃料極集電体および酸化剤極集電体を介して前記燃料極層および 酸化剤極'層に燃料ガスおよび酸化剤ガスを供給する固体酸化物型燃料電池におい て、
前記セパレ一夕の前記集電体と接する側の面に窪みを設けると共に、 周縁部分 を膨出したことを特徴とする固体酸化物型燃料電池。
1 0 . 前記セパレー夕の表面形状が少なくとも前記燃料極集電体と接する面に成 されていることを特徴とする請求項 7から請求項 9までの何れかに記載の固体酸 化物型燃料電池。
1 1 . 前記燃料ガスおよび酸化剤ガスが、 前記セパレー夕の中央部から前記燃料 極集電体および酸化剤極集電体を介して前記燃料極層および酸化剤極層に供給さ れる構造を有することを特徴とする請求項 7から請求項 1 0までの何れかに記載 の固体酸化物型燃料電池。
1 2 . 各電極の外側に配した集電体に接して電極側にガス供給用のガス通路を形 成する固体酸化物型燃料電池用セパレー夕であって、
前記集電体と接する側の面に窪みを設け、 当該集電体内におけるガスの滞留体 積を大きくしたことを特徴とする固体酸化物型燃料電池用セパレー夕。
1 3 . 各電極の外側に配した集電体に接して電極側にガス供給用のガス通路を形 成する固体酸化物型燃料電池用セパレー夕であって、
前記集電体と接する側の面の周縁部分を膨出し、 当該集電体外周部でのガスの 線速度を上昇させたことを特徴とする固体酸化物型燃料電池用セパレー夕。
1 4 . 各電極の外側に配した集電体に接して電極側にガス供給用のガス通路を形 成する固体酸化物型燃料電池用セパレ一夕であって、
前記集電体と接する側の面に窪みを設けると共に、 周縁部分を膨出したことを 特徴とする固体酸化物型燃料電池用セパレ一タ。
1 5 . 前記セパレー夕の表面形状が、 少なくとも燃料極集電体と接する面に形成 されていることを特徴とする請求項 1 2から請求項 1 4までの何れかに記載の固 体酸化物型燃料電池用セパレー夕。
