Definitions
- the subject of this invention is a device for determining the wetting of a wall by a liquid.
- Certain fields of the technique require to be interested in this question and to determine for example if walls of tanks, pipes, measurement probes or tools of nuclear reactors are wetted in certain metals which can be sodium, potassium , lead, bismuth or their alloys. Depending on the case, wetting is essential or on the contrary prohibited.
- the wetting of a solid by a liquid is a phenomenon which depends on many factors including, in addition to the chemical nature of the liquid metal and the wall, the purity of the liquid, the surface state of the wall, the temperature, the nature and the presence of occluded gas in the liquid and the time for bringing the liquid metal and the wall into contact.
- Wetting can be defined as the adhesion to the atomic scale of the metal on the wall and is not easy to determine directly.
- the invention belongs to a different category of methods and comprises two fundamental embodiments, but which are closely related since they are based on the transmission of ultrasonic waves through the interface of the wall and the liquid.
- One of them is a device for determining the wetting of a wall with a liquid, characterized in that it comprises: a capacity for the liquid; a witness object of the wall placed in the capacity; an ultrasonic wave transmitter and receiver; and two waveguides crossing the capacitance, located in extension, the transmitter and the receiver being mounted respectively on the ends of the waveguides extending out of the capacitance, and the object being placed between the waves; the object having a thickness chosen to favor the passage of waves coming from the transmitter.
- the other is a device for determining the wetting of a wall by a liquid, characterized in that it comprises: a capacity for the liquid; a witness object of the wall placed in the capacity; an ultrasonic wave transmitter and receiver; and two waveguides crossing the capacitance, located side by side, the transmitter and the receiver being mounted respectively on the ends of the waveguides extending out of the capacitance, and the object being placed in front of the guides waves, the object having a frontal surface chosen to favor the reflections of the waves between the waveguides.
- the capacity should be equipped with a heating means; the waveguides will then be equipped with a cooling means located outside of the capacity, and which may consist of a box surrounding each of the waveguides between the capacity and either the transmitter or the receiver.
- FIG. 1 is a general view of a device according to the invention
- FIGS. 2A, 2B, 2C, and 2D illustrate signals brought into play
- Figure 1 describes a first embodiment of the invention. It is formed in an enclosure 1 which allows to inject therein the desired composition atmosphere and contains a target 2 which is a simulacrum of the wall to be studied and which is, supported by a support 3, in a capacity 4 included in enclosure 1. Two waveguides 5 and 6 facing each other enter capacity 4 and stop some distance from the target 2. The tightness of capacity 4 is guaranteed by flow sleeves 7 for waveguides 5 and 6, the ends of which are welded to capacity 4 and to a flange 20 projecting from a section of waveguides 5 and 6 out of capacity 4. Bellows 8 extend the passage sleeves 7 and extend up to flanges 9 connected to boxes 10 themselves fixed at the rear to the enclosure 1.
- the bottom of the boxes 10 (near the flanges 9) is occupied by water boxes 11, the contents of which are renewed by inlet and outlet pipes 12 and 13.
- the waveguides 5 and 6 pass through the water boxes 11 which are hollowed out in their center, and their ends are equipped with supports 14 of ultrasonic wave translators 15 and 16 of which the first is intended for emission of ultrasonic waves and the second upon receipt.
- the reference 17 generally designates a support structure for the capacity 4 in the enclosure 1 and the reference 18 means for heating the capacity 4 to carry out the experiment at the desired temperature.
- the double welding of the passage sleeves 17 makes the capacity 4 waterproof, and the water boxes 11 constitute a cooling means which acts as a barrier to the heat flowing through the waveguide 5 and 6 and which could have reached the translators 15 and 16.
- the bellows 8 covering the hot part of the order guides 5 and 6 protect the exterior.
- a heat shield 19 is also arranged around the capacity.
- FIG. 2A shows some examples of signals obtained with the invention through a wetting liquid, the upper trace representing the signal transmitted and the lower trace the signal received.
- FIG. 2B the target 2 was removed; in the case of FIG. 2B the target 2 was installed in the wet state; in the case of Figure 3, it was installed but not wet; finally, FIG. 2D illustrates an intermediate (partial) wetting of the target 3.
- the total or partial absence of wetting was reproduced by simulation, by covering the target 2 with an adhesive sheet under which gas was occluded.
- the thickness of the target 2 is chosen to offer maximum transparency and it is more precisely equal to the half-wavelength of the ultrasound used.
- FIG. 2A shows liquid, which produces a moderate attenuation of the waves revealing a significant receptive signal (462 millivolts at the origin).
- Each of the signals also comprises, after the first wave train which represents the pulse supplied, successive echoes produced by multiple reflections at the ends of the waveguide 5 or 6.
- Figure 2B shows the influence of attenuation by target 2, which only leaves a signal of 70 millivolts. It is also noted that the signal measured on the side of the emitting waveguide 5 comprises echoes originating from reflections of the waves on the target 2.
- FIG. 2C shows the almost total disappearance of the received signal, the energy emitted then being absorbed on the surfaces of target 2.
- FIG. 2D shows the results obtained in FIG. 2D are intermediate with a value at the origin of 40 millivolts.
- the degree of wetting of target 2 appears to be proportional to the intensity of the signal which may have crossed target 2, of course as a function of the intensity of the signal transmitted. It is the intensity at the origin of the received signal which must be considered.
- the waveguides 5 and 6 can be arranged side by side provided that the target, here referenced by 30, is of an appropriate shape, for example concave, and returns the waves originating from the first waveguide 5 towards the second (6) after having undergone two reflections in a notch 31.
- the target here referenced by 30, is of an appropriate shape, for example concave, and returns the waves originating from the first waveguide 5 towards the second (6) after having undergone two reflections in a notch 31.
- FIG. 3B a tight assembly of the waveguides 5 and 6 through the wall of the capacitor 4 is obtained by welding said guides, at the location of a flange 32, to a flange 33 blocking an opening in the capacity wall 4.
- the waveguides 5 and 6 pass through respective openings in the flange 33.
- a seal d the seal 34 is clamped between the capacity 4 and the flange 33.
- FIGS. 6A and 6B illustrate complementary embodiments of another design, where similar waveguides 5 and 6 are replaced by concentric waveguides, including an internal waveguide 38 similar to the previous ones (cylindrical) and an external tubular waveguide 39.
- the interior waveguide is transmitting and the waves undergo a double reflection on a target 40 provided with a circular notch 41 having, as in FIG.
- the external waveguide 39 is transmitting and the waves are reflected towards the entry of the internal waveguide 38 after having undergone a reflection on a target 42 provided with a rounded imprint as the previous target '35.
- the embodiment of the rear of the device could be that of FIG. 6C, the external waveguide 39 comprising a flange 43 welded to a flange 44 screwed to the wall of the capacity 4 and enclosing a joint 45 in the perimeter of the tubular part devoted to the conduction of waves; the outer waveguide 39 also comprises an internal flange 46 for supporting the internal waveguide 38 and a flange 47 for centering the same internal waveguide 38 is located under the previous one.
- a crown 48 for supporting the internal waveguide 38 is placed on the internal flange 46.
- a single translator 49 is placed. It has a dual function, that is to say that it comprises a single core 50 under which the piezoelectric elements 51 and 52 for transmission and reception are deposited. Shock absorbers 53 and 54 are housed behind the elements piezoelectric 51 and 52 in the cavities of the core 50. Electrical conductors 55 and 56 connect the piezoelectric elements to signal generation and measurement portions not shown. Finally, a front blade 57 covers the elements 51 and 52 and provides the link with the waveguides 38 and 39.
- All these latter embodiments are designed for an interpretation of the signals in reflection mode, which differs from that of the transmission mode of the embodiment in FIG. 1.
- no signal returns to the receiver in the absence of the target.
- the reception signal In the presence of the target, the reception signal is always present, but exhibits a variable phase shift relative to the signal transmitted according to the degree of wetting. When the wetting is complete, this phase shift is zero, while the phase shift is maximum in the absence of wetting. A detailed temporal analysis of the signals should therefore be undertaken here.
- the waveguides resist the heat of the liquid if it is a molten metal. They can be metallic for example, or composed of an envelope containing another liquid. It is also important that the liquid bathing the target wets them perfectly, which can sometimes be ensured by coating them with a suitable body, which has no other function than ensuring this wetting.
