Definitions
- the present invention relates to a device for UV treatment of flowing media, in particular a device for UV disinfection of drinking water or waste water with the features of the preamble of claim 1.
- the general technical background of the present invention relates to UV disinfection systems.
- UV disinfection systems with medium-pressure lamps which are not the subject of the present invention, and such systems with low-pressure mercury UV lamps as specified in the preamble of claim 1.
- the systems with medium-pressure lamps usually have a few lamp units which are distinguished by high UV radiation power with a correspondingly higher electrical power consumption. Since there are only a few emitters, separate monitoring of each individual ls easily possible. The effort for this monitoring is compared to the other financial and medium pressure lamps. low equipment expenditure.
- Such systems therefore sometimes include several hundred radiators, which are arranged as a so-called array in one or more flow channels. These radiators are usually used together and put into operation when new. The lifespan of such emitters is approximately 8,000 to 9,000 operating hours, i.e. approximately one year. After this time, the radiant power has dropped so much that the radiators must be replaced.
- the emitted radiation power is monitored by UV sensors, which either monitor the entire array or individual selected modules or groups of the array, as described in the publications mentioned above
- US5,660,719 has been proposed.
- a coil is assigned to each lamp, which absorbs the electromagnetic radiation of the emitter in operation from the voltage supply and which is then evaluated separately.
- the emitted radiation intensity itself is also measured in this document using a single UV sensor for several emitters, so that the intensity signal is only available for the array as a whole, but the information from the operating voltage is available for each individual lamp.
- Monitoring the individual radiation power of each individual radiator is only possible indirectly, however, since the UV radiation emitted cannot be unambiguously determined from the course of the supply voltage.
- the radiator tube or the cladding tube surrounding the radiator has only limited UV transparency, and therefore the available UV radiation is less than assumed according to the electrical parameters ,
- a single radiator, a group of radiators or all radiators can be modulated simultaneously with regard to the operating voltage. If all emitters are modulated simultaneously and the modulation is carried out differently for each emitter (for example with a different modulation frequency), all emitters can be monitored simultaneously in operation by evaluating the sensor signal with regard to the different types of modulation and the individual components be filtered out.
- the operating voltage for the low-pressure mercury UV lamps has a natural frequency in the range from 20 kHz to 1 MHz.
- the operating voltage is modulated as amplitude modulation with frequencies in the range from 100 Hz to 100 kHz.
- Adjacent radiators can be combined in groups, the radiators in a group being able to be modulated together with similar frequencies, in particular with frequencies that are adjacent in a frequency grid.
- an electronic ballast for a low-pressure mercury lamp is proposed according to the invention, which is set up to apply a modulation to the operating voltage or the electrical power output, preferably as a function of an external control.
- Figure 1 a UV disinfection system for flowing water in a cross section from the side; such as
- Figure 2 the Fourier-transformed intensity spectrum, as generated by the system according to Figure 1 in operation.
- a device for disinfecting flowing wastewater is illustrated schematically in a cross section from the side in FIG.
- the waste water stream 1 flows in a channel 2 in the illustration in FIG. 1 from left to right.
- the wastewater 1 is the outflow of a sewage treatment plant, that is to say mechanically and biologically filtered wastewater that is essentially transparent but can still contain microorganisms.
- UV lamps 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 and 3.4 are arranged in channel 2, which are of the type of low-pressure mercury UV lamps. These radiators are tubular and in FIG. 1 extend perpendicular to the plane of the drawing, that is to say transversely to the direction of flow of the waste water 1. However, they can also be arranged vertically or lengthwise in channel 2.
- the UV lamps 3 are usually constructed in such a way that quartz cladding tubes are the actual UV lamps surrounded and protected against deposits from the wastewater and against mechanical damage from solids carried in the wastewater.
- Further radiator groups 4.1 to 4.4, 5.1 to 5.4, 6.1 to 6.4, 7.1 to 7.4 and 8.1 to 8.4 are arranged downstream of the first radiator group 3.
- a UV sensor 10 is arranged approximately in the center of the radiator arrangement 3.1 to 8.4.
- the UV sensor 10 comprises a silicon carbide diode and is electrically connected to a control device 11.
- the control unit 11 controls a number of electronic ballasts 13 via a connecting line 12, an electronic ballast 13 being assigned to each UV lamp.
- four ballasts are combined into one unit and assigned to a group of four emitters.
- the ballasts 13 apply supply lines 14 to the UV lamps with an operating voltage which must have defined current and voltage profiles for the ignition and for the operation of the UV lamp.
- the supply voltage which is emitted by the electronic ballasts 13 during operation, is an alternating voltage with a frequency in the range from 50 to 100 kHz for the mercury low-pressure lamps that are usually used.
- the UV sensor 10 receives direct and indirect UV radiation from all emitters, as is known from the prior art, it cannot be readily determined whether a particular emitter has ignited and is emitting in the intended manner.
- control unit 11 controls a specific ballast 13 in such a way that the operating voltage of the radiator assigned to this control unit has an amplitude modulation of, for example, 400 Hz and a
- Stroke of, for example, +/- 10% of the operating voltage is modulated.
- the intensity oscillating with the modulation frequency of 400 Hz can be detected with the UV sensor 10.
- the UV sensor 10 is different from conventional sensors sensors are not provided with a low-pass filter, which usually cuts off frequencies above approximately 20 Hz in order to exclude influences of the mains frequency (50 Hz or 60 Hz).
- the UV sensor according to the present invention works up to frequencies of at least a few kilohertz.
- this signal is expediently subjected to a Fourier transformation, for example according to the known FFT algorithm.
- a Fourier transformation for example according to the known FFT algorithm.
- the spectrum of the UV radiation, as received by the UV sensor 10 is resolved according to intensity and frequency. Such a spectrum is illustrated in FIG. 2.
- the Fourier-transformed signal of the UV sensor 10 is plotted as a frequency spectrum in FIG.
- the frequency is plotted in the X-axis and the relative intensity in arbitrary units in the Y-axis.
- the frequencies f3.1 and f3.2 and f3.4 have approximately the same intensity, while the line has a lower intensity at the frequency f3.3.
- This spectrum would then be evaluated in the control unit 11 such that the emitters 3.3 assigned to the frequency f3.3 do not convert the modulation signal, which has the same stroke in the operating voltage for all emitters, into a corresponding intensity modulation. This is an indication that the total radiation power of the emitter 3.3 is lower than that of the three other emitters in the emitter group.
- the modulation frequencies for the other radiators 4.1 to 8.4 are not shown in FIG. 2. According to the illustration in FIG. 2, they are at other frequencies. The better clarity in the frequency spectrum is served if the modulation frequencies of neighboring radiators are similar. For example, one can choose 400 Hz as the modulation frequency for the radiator 3.1, the radiator 3.2 would receive 450 Hz, the 3.3 500Hz radiator and the 3.4 550Hz radiator. Accordingly, the other radiators then receive higher modulation frequencies. Via the control 11 and the individually controlled ballasts 13, the respective modulation is clearly assigned to the radiator in question.
- radiators of a radiator group are modulated simultaneously, it can also be provided that radiators are only modulated individually for a short time. Then, for example, a modulation is impressed on the radiator 4.1 and at the same time it is checked whether this modulation is detected by the UV sensor. A line similar to that in FIG. 2 then appears in the Fourier-transformed spectrum at the modulation frequency, and the absence of this line is an indication of a malfunction of the radiator or of an assigned component.
- all spotlights can be switched on without modulating their operating voltage.
- the modulation can then be individually impressed on the operating voltage for each radiator and then checked and stored to determine the intensity of the associated line (f3.1 to f8.4).
- This line can then be standardized as a 100% signal for the radiator in question. If the operating voltage has to be increased over time due to the aging of the emitters in order to maintain a constant UV intensity in the waste water 1, the intensity of the respective line will not change if the modulation is also changed proportionally. It can therefore be checked at any time whether a single emitter produces the intended intensity and whether the emitters in a group or all emitters as a whole perform uniformly or whether individual emitters drop more than others in terms of their output. Finally, it is possible to individually regulate the power of the individual emitters in order to achieve an overall uniform distribution of the radiation intensity in the wastewater 1.
- a separate UV sensor is not required for each radiator and that the individual contribution to radiation can also be determined on the basis of the individual modulation frequency even when other neighboring radiators are operated simultaneously.
- amplitude modulation with a frequency of a few hundred to a few thousand Hertz and a modulation deviation of +/- 10% of the operating voltage was proposed as the type of modulation.
- Other types of modulation are also possible.
- the signal can be modulated onto the operating voltage as a pulse modulation in the form of a pulse width modulation.
- Demodulation may then require other methods that are more adapted to the selected type of modulation than the Fourier transform described above.
- band filters can be used which specifically filter the modulation frequency out of the overall signal.
