[0011] 図 8を参照すると、酸化触媒における排気流速を触媒容量で除した値 (排気流速 Z 触媒容量)と触媒活性度合い (CO、 HC浄化率)との関係が示されており、同図によ れば、酸化触媒は、排気流速 Z触媒容量が小さい範囲では触媒活性度合いが大き く酸化反応が促進され、一方、排気流速 Z触媒容量が大きくなり、ある一定の値を越 えると触媒活性度合 ヽが急激に減少して酸ィ匕反応が減衰すると ヽぅ特性を有して ヽ ることがゎカゝる。そして、同図によれば、アイドル運転 (ローアイドル)時の排気流速に 対して酸化触媒の触媒容量が大き!ヽほど、アイドル運転時の排気流速 Z触媒容量 は小さくなつている。

[0021] 図 1に示すように、内燃機関であるエンジン 1は例えばコモンレール式直列 4気筒の ディーゼルエンジンである。コモンレール式のディーゼルエンジン 1では、燃焼室 2に 臨んで電磁式の燃料噴射ノズル 4が各気筒毎に設けられており、各燃料噴射ノズル 4は高圧パイプを介してコモンレール 6に接続されている。そして、コモンレール 6は、 図示しないが、高圧パイプを介して高圧ポンプに接続され、さらに低圧パイプを介し て燃料タンクに接続されている。なお、エンジン 1がディーゼルエンジンであるため、 燃料としては軽油が使用される。
[0022] エンジン 1の吸気通路 10には電磁式(DCモータ式)のスロットルバルブ 12が設けら れており、スロットルバルブ 12よりも上流側には、インタークーラ 14、ターボチャージ ャ 16のコンプレッサを介して吸入空気量 Qaを検出するエアフローセンサ (AFS) 18 が設けられている。スロットルバルブ 12は例えばバタフライバルブからなり、ェアフロ 一センサ 18は、ここでは例えば熱線式エアフローセンサが採用される力 カルマン渦 式エアフローセンサ等であってもよ 、。
[0023] 一方、排気通路 20には、吸蔵型 NOx触媒 (排気浄化触媒) 22が介装されている。
吸蔵型 NOx触媒 22は、例えば白金 (Pt)等の貴金属の他に、 NOx吸蔵剤であるカリ ゥム (K)等のアルカリ金属やバリウム (Ba)等のアルカリ土類金属を包含しており、排 気の空気過剰率 λの大き、(即ち、リーン空燃比の)酸ィ匕雰囲気中で排気中の NOx (有害成分)を吸蔵する一方、排気の空気過剰率えの小さい (即ち、リッチ空燃比の) 還元雰囲気中で吸蔵した NOxを放出し、還元(以下、 NOxパージ)して浄ィ匕するよう に構成されている。なお、吸蔵型 NOx触媒 22は貴金属の存在により酸化機能をも併 せ有しており、 HC、 COをも浄ィ匕可能である。
[0024] 排気通路 20の吸蔵型 NOx触媒 22の直上流には、 NOxパージ時において排気の 空気過剰率 λを小さくすべく還元剤 (軽油等)を排気に混入させる還元剤インジエタ タ 24が設けられている。
[0025] さらに、排気通路 20の吸蔵型 NOx触媒 22よりも上流側には、ターボチャージャ 16 のタービンの直下流に位置して、小型の酸化触媒 26が介装されている。なお、ター ボチャージャ 16のタービンはエンジン 1の排気マ-ホールド(図示せず)の直下流に 位置するよう配設されて 、る。
[0026] 酸化触媒 26は、一般に使用される酸ィヒ触媒であり、白金 (Pt)等の貴金属を有して 構成されているが、ここでは、排気中の HC、 CO等を酸化処理し、当該酸化反応の 反応熱によって排気下流側に位置する吸蔵型 NOx触媒 22の昇温を行うことを目的 として設けられている。つまり、酸ィ匕触媒 26は排気マ-ホールドに近接しているため に排気温度の低くなるローアイドル (アイドル運転)時にお 1ヽても比較的高温の排気 熱で活性 (ライトオフ)状態に維持されるため、排気中の HC、 COを常に酸化処理可 能であり、一方、吸蔵型 NOx触媒 22はエンジン 1から遠い位置にあるため、ローアイ ドル時には温度が低下し易くライトオフ状態力 外れる傾向にあり、ここでは、吸蔵型 NOx触媒 22の排気上流側に酸化触媒 26を配設することで、ライトオフ状態にある当 該酸化触媒 26の酸化反応により発生する反応熱によって排気下流側の吸蔵型 NOx 触媒 22の昇温及び温度維持を行うことを可能にしている。
[0027] ところで、酸ィ匕触媒 26においては、上述したように、例えばエンジン 1の始動直後 等にお 1、て車両を発進させる場合や減速後の加速の場合のように、酸化触媒 26の 温度がライトオフ温度以下であるときにエンジン 1が加速操作されて負荷が増大し、口 一アイドル状態を脱するようなことになると、負荷増大に伴って酸化触媒 26の温度が ライトオフ温度を越えて急激に上昇し、ライトオフ温度に達するまでに酸化触媒 26〖こ 捕捉された HC、 COがー気に酸化反応して急激且つ大量の反応熱が発生し、酸ィ匕 触媒 26が過昇温に至ると 、う問題がある。
[0028] そして、この問題は、図 8に示したように、ローアイドル時の排気流速に対して酸ィ匕 触媒の触媒容量が大き ヽほどアイドル運転時の排気流速 Z触媒容量 (排気流速を 触媒容量で除した値)が小さぐ当該図 8に示す排気流速 Z触媒容量と触媒活性度 合い(CO、 HC浄ィ匕率)との関係により、エンジン 1の負荷が増大しても酸ィ匕反応が 促進された状態が継続してしまうことが一因と考えられる。
[0029] このようなことから、酸ィ匕触媒 26については、排気流速 Z触媒容量と触媒活性度合 いとの関係に基づき、ローアイドル時には触媒活性度合いが大きく酸ィ匕反応が促進 された状態となる一方、エンジン 1の負荷が増大すると酸化反応が促進された状態が 継続しな ヽよう触媒容量を設定するようにして ヽる。
[0030] 具体的には、図 2に示すように、ローアイドル時の排気流速 Z触媒容量が触媒活性 度合い(CO、 HC浄ィ匕率)の所定の最大活性範囲内で最大或いはその近傍となるよ うに、つまり排気流速 Z触媒容量が減少開始直前の値 (活性限界)近傍となるよう排 気流速 Z触媒容量を調整し、酸化触媒 26の触媒容量を設定する。
[0031] 詳しくは、後述するように、ローアイドル時には酸ィ匕触媒 26によってできるだけ多く の HC、 COを酸ィ匕反応させるよう、スロットルバルブ 12を閉弁作動させるようにしてお り、このようにスロットルバルブ 12を閉弁作動させると、排気流量が変化して排気流速 力 、さくなるため、ここでは、スロットルバルブ 12を所定開度まで閉作動させた状態で の排気流速に基づ ヽて、ローアイドル時の排気流速 Z触媒容量が触媒活性度合 、 の所定の最大活性範囲内で最大或いはその近傍となるよう酸ィ匕触媒 26の触媒容量 を設定する。
[0032] このように排気流速 Z触媒容量が調整され、酸化触媒 26の触媒容量が設定されて いると、ローアイドル時には、図 2に示すように触媒活性度合いが大きいことから、酸 化触媒 26の酸化反応の反応熱によって排気下流側の吸蔵型 NOx触媒 22が良好に 昇温することになり、ローアイドル時であっても吸蔵型 NOx触媒 22がライトオフ温度 以上に維持され、吸蔵型 NOx触媒 22において NOxの吸蔵と放出還元とが良好に実 施され、 NOx浄ィ匕性能の向上が図られる。一方、エンジン 1の負荷が増大 (負荷増大 )し、ローアイドル状態を脱したときには、図 2に示すように触媒活性度合いが急激に 減少して酸化反応が大きく減衰することになり、ライトオフ温度に至るまでに酸化触媒 26に捕捉された HC、 COの酸化反応による大量の反応熱の発生が抑制され、酸ィ匕 触媒 26の過昇温が防止される。これにより酸化触媒 26の延命が図られる。
[0033] また、このようにスロットルバルブ 12を所定開度まで閉作動させた状態での排気流 速に基づいて酸化触媒 26の触媒容量を設定するようにすると、酸化触媒 26の触媒 容量を極力小さく設定して酸ィ匕触媒 26の小型化を図ることができることになり、ロー アイドル時の比較的低温の排気熱であっても酸ィ匕触媒 26を短時間でライトオフ温度 に昇温でき、ライトオフ温度に達するまでに酸ィ匕触媒 26に捕捉される HC、 COの量 を低減することが可能である。これにより、エンジン 1の負荷が増大した場合における 反応熱の発生が上記酸化反応の減衰と相俟って十分に抑制される。
[0034] また、この際、酸化触媒 26の担体にっ ヽては熱伝導率の高!ヽメタル担体で構成し ておくのがよぐこれにより、酸ィ匕触媒 26をより短時間でライトオフ温度に昇温でき、 エンジン 1の負荷が増大した場合における反応熱の発生をさらに抑制することができ る。
[0035] 図 1に戻り、排気マ-ホールドからは排気の一部を EGRガスとして吸気系に還流さ せる EGR通路 30が延びており、該 EGR通路 30の終端は吸気通路 10のスロットルバ ルブ 12よりも下流部分に接続されている。そして、 EGR通路 30には、 EGRガス流量 を調整すべく任意の開度に開度調節可能な電磁式 (DCモータ式)の EGRバルブ 32 が介装されている。さらに、 EGR通路 30の排気マ-ホールド寄りには、 EGRクーラ 3 4が介装されている。
[0036] 電子コントロールユニット(ECU) 40は、エンジン 1の燃料噴射制御を含め車両の種 々の制御を司る制御装置であり(機関制御手段)、入出力インターフェイス、 CPU,メ モリ等力も構成されている。そして、 ECU40の入力側には、上述したエアフローセン サ 18の他、例えばエンジン 1のクランク角に基づいてエンジン回転速度 Neを検出す る Neセンサ 42、ドライバのアクセル操作を検出するアクセルセンサ 43、吸蔵型 NOx 触媒 22の温度を検出する温度センサ 44等の各種センサ類が接続されている。
[0037] 一方、 ECU40の出力側には、上記燃料噴射ノズル 4、スロットルバルブ 12、還元 剤インジェクタ 24、 EGRバルブ 32等の各種デバイス類が接続されて ヽる。
[0038] これにより、各種センサ類力 の入力情報に基づき各種デバイス類が作動制御され 、エンジン 1や車両が適正に運転制御される。

[0040] 図 3を参照すると、本発明に係るローアイドル排気昇温制御の制御ルーチンがフロ 一チャートで示されており、以下同フローチャートに沿い説明する。
[0041] 先ず、ステップ S 10では、エンジン 1が現在ローアイドル状態であるか否かを判別す る。具体的には、 Neセンサ 42からの情報に基づき、検出されるエンジン回転速度 Ne 力 一アイドルに対応した回転速度 Niであるか否か且つアクセルセンサ 43により検 出されるアクセル開度が 0%である力否かを判別する。判別結果が偽 (No)でローァ ィドルではないと判定された場合には、当該ルーチンを抜ける。一方、判別結果が真 (Yes)でローアイドルと判定された場合には、ステップ S12に進む。
[0042] ステップ S 12では、吸蔵型 NOx触媒 22の温度 Teatが吸蔵型 NOx触媒 22のライト オフ温度 Tはり低 、か否かを判別する。判別結果が偽 (No)で吸蔵型 NOx触媒 22 の温度 Teatがライトオフ温度 T1以上と判定された場合には、吸蔵型 NOx触媒 22は 十分に機能していると判断でき、当該ルーチンを抜ける。一方、判別結果が真 (Yes) で温度 Teatがライトオフ温度 Tはり低 ヽと判定された場合には、吸蔵型 ΝΟχ触媒 22 の昇温が必要と判断し、ステップ S 14に進む。
[0043] ステップ S 14では、 EGRバルブ 32を閉弁とし、 EGRガスの吸気系への還流を禁止 する。
[0044] そして、ステップ S 16では、スロットルバルブ 12を所定開度まで閉作動させ、吸入空 気量 Qaを小さく絞る (スロットル制御手段)。
[0045] このように、スロットルバルブ 12の閉作動により吸入空気量 Qaが小さく絞られると、 EGRバルブ 32が閉弁されて EGRガスの吸気系への還流が無いことから、エンジン 1 においてボンビングロスが増加することになり、これに対向してローアイドルを維持す ベく燃料噴射量を増大することになる。さらに、ディーゼルエンジン 1では筒内圧力の 低下によって燃料の着火時期が遅延するという現象が起こる。これにより、エンジン 1 の排気温度が上昇し、酸化触媒 26の温度が高温に保持される。
[0046] また、このように着火時期が遅延すると、燃焼が緩慢となり、図 4 (b)に示すように上 記燃料噴射量の増大と相俟って排気中の HC、 CO濃度が増加して酸化触媒 26で の HC、 COの酸化反応による反応熱量が増大し、図 4 (a)に実線で示すように酸ィ匕 触媒 26がターボチャージャ 16のタービンの出口温度 (破線)よりも昇温することに伴 い吸蔵型 NOx触媒 22が確実に昇温することになる。
[0047] ステップ S 18では、燃料噴射ノズル 4により噴射する燃料の主噴射時期をローアイド ル時以外の通常運転時の燃料噴射時期よりも遅角させる (燃料噴射制御手段)。具 体的には、主噴射の燃料噴射時期を通常運転時の燃料噴射時期(例えば、 ATDC5 ° )から失火限界点近傍まで遅角させ、ローアイドル時専用の燃料噴射時期(例えば 、ATDC20° )とする。
[0048] このように、主噴射の燃料噴射時期を失火限界点近傍まで遅角させると、燃焼が不 完全となって排気中の HC、 CO濃度が増加し、酸化触媒 26での HC、 COの酸化反 応による反応熱量がさらに増大することになり、吸蔵型 NOx触媒 22がより一層確実 に昇温することになる。
[0049] なお、このように主噴射の燃料噴射時期を失火限界点近傍まで遅角させると、燃料 の着火が不安定になり、燃焼悪ィ匕を招いたり最悪の場合失火したりすることから、同 時に主噴射の直前にぉ ヽてノィロット噴射を実施するようにする (燃料噴射制御手段
) o
[0050] ここに、ノ ィロット噴射は主噴射の燃料が安定して着火するよう当該主噴射による燃 料の火種としての役割を果たすものである。従って、パイロット噴射については、主噴 射の燃料量に比べて極少量とする。また、パイロット噴射は一回だけでもよいが、火 種としての役割を考慮すると、複数回実施することが望ましぐここでは、例えば二回 実施する。具体的には、図 5に示すように、筒内圧力(実線)が最大となる圧縮上死 点近傍で最初のパイロット噴射を行 ヽ、 ATDC10° 近傍で二回目のパイロット噴射を 行う(ダブルパイロット噴射)。
[0051] これより、主噴射の燃料噴射時期を失火限界点近傍まで遅角させても、主噴射によ る燃料が安定して確実に燃焼し、失火や燃焼悪化が防止される。
[0052] 以上説明したように、本発明に係る内燃機関の排気浄化装置では、スロットルバル ブ 12を所定開度まで閉作動させた状態での排気流速を基準に、ローアイドル時の排 気流速 Z触媒容量が触媒活性度合いの所定の最大活性範囲内で最大或いはその 近傍となるよう酸化触媒 26の触媒容量を極力小さく設定するようにし (図 2参照)、さ らに、ローアイドル排気昇温制御により、ローアイドル時において、スロットルバルブ 1 2を所定開度まで閉作動させるとともに燃料噴射時期を遅延させ、酸化触媒 26の昇 温と酸化触媒 26における酸化反応の促進を図り、吸蔵型 NOx触媒 22の昇温を促進 するようにして 、る(図 3参照)。
[0053] 従って、本発明に係る内燃機関の排気浄ィ匕装置によれば、エンジン 1がローアイド ル状態にあるときにのみ酸化触媒 26を有効に機能させて当該酸化触媒 26の酸化反 応の反応熱で吸蔵型 NOx触媒 22を昇温させ、吸蔵型 NOx触媒 22の温度をライトォ フ温度以上に良好に維持して NOx浄ィ匕性能を向上できるとともに、酸化触媒 26の温 度がライトオフ温度以下であるときにエンジン 1が加速操作されて負荷が増大した場 合において、酸化触媒 26における酸化反応を大きく減衰させ、ライトオフ温度に至る までに酸化触媒 26に捕捉された HC、 COの酸化反応による急激且つ大量の反応熱 の発生を抑制し、酸ィ匕触媒 26の過昇温を防止することができる。
[0054] 以上で本発明の実施形態についての説明を終えるが、実施態様は上記実施形態 に限られるものではない。
[0055] 例えば、上記実施形態では、スロットルバルブ 12を所定開度まで閉作動させた状 態での排気流速を基準に酸化触媒 26の触媒容量を設定するようにし、ローアイドル 排気昇温制御により、ローアイドル時においてはスロットルバルブ 12を所定開度まで 閉作動させるようにした力 スロットルバルブ 12を有さないシステムにおいては、或い はスロットルバルブ 12を有している場合であっても、スロットルバルブ 12を閉作動させ ない通常のローアイドルでの排気流速を基準に酸化触媒 26の触媒容量を設定し、口 一アイドル排気昇温制御、即ちスロットルバルブ 12の閉作動及び燃料噴射時期の遅 角を実施しな 、ようにしてもよぐこのようにしても十分な効果が得られる。
[0056] また、上記実施形態では、吸蔵型 NOx触媒 22の排気上流側に酸化触媒 26を配 設する場合を例に説明したが、吸蔵型 NOx触媒 22に限られるものではなぐ当該吸 蔵型 NOx触媒 22の位置には如何なる排気浄ィ匕触媒を配設するようにしてもよぐ例 えば選択的触媒還元システム(SCRシステム)を配設してもよ!ヽ。
[0057] また、上記実施形態では、ローアイドル排気昇温制御にぉ 、て、スロットルバルブ 1 2の閉作動と燃料噴射時期の遅角の両方を実施するようにしたが (ステップ S16及び ステップ S18)、スロットルバルブ 12の閉作動だけを実施するようにしてもよぐまた、 燃料噴射時期の遅角及びパイロット噴射だけを実施するようにしてもょ 、 (ステップ S 16またはステップ S 18)。
[0058] また、上記実施形態では、吸蔵型 NOx触媒 22の温度 Teatが吸蔵型 NOx触媒 22 のライトオフ温度 Tはり小さい場合にスロットルバルブ 12の閉作動及び燃料噴射時 期の遅角を実施するようにした力 吸蔵型 NOx触媒 22の温度 Teatに拘わらず、ロー アイドル時には常にスロットルバルブ 12の閉作動及び燃料噴射時期の遅角を実施 するようにしてちょい。

Claims

請求の範囲
[1] 内燃機関の排気通路に設けられ、排気中の有害成分を浄化可能な排気浄化触媒と 該排気浄化触媒の排気上流側に設けられた酸化触媒とを備え、
該酸化触媒の触媒容量は、排気流速を触媒容量で除した値と触媒活性度合 ヽと の関係において、排気流速が前記内燃機関のアイドル運転状態時における排気流 速であるときに、触媒活性度合いが最大で且つ前記排気流速を触媒容量で除した 値が最大或いはその近傍となるよう設定されていることを特徴とする内燃機関の排気 浄化装置。
[2] 前記排気浄化触媒は NOx触媒を含んでなることを特徴とする、請求項 1に記載の内 燃機関の排気浄化装置。
[3] 前記内燃機関は吸気系にスロットルバルブを有するディーゼル機関であって、該スロ ットルバルブの開閉作動を行うスロットル制御手段を備えると共に、該ディーゼル機 関の運転を制御する機関制御手段を有し、
前記スロットル制御手段は、前記内燃機関が前記アイドル運転状態にあるとき、前 記スロットルバルブを所定開度まで閉作動させ、
前記酸化触媒の触媒容量は、内燃機関がアイドル運転状態であって排気流速が 前記機関制御手段により前記スロットルバルブを前記所定開度まで閉作動させた状 態の排気流速であるときに、前記触媒活性度合いが最大で且つ前記排気流速を触 媒容量で除した値が最大或いはその近傍となるよう設定されていることを特徴とする 、請求項 1に記載の内燃機関の排気浄ィ匕装置。
[4] 前記機関制御手段は、さらに、燃料噴射量と燃料噴射時期とを制御する燃料噴射制 御手段を含み、
該燃料噴射制御手段は、前記内燃機関が前記アイドル運転状態にあるとき、主噴 射の燃料噴射時期を通常時期よりも遅延させ、該主噴射の直前に該主噴射よりも燃 料噴射量の少ないパイロット噴射を少なくとも一回以上行うことを特徴とする、請求項 3に記載の内燃機関の排気浄ィ匕装置。
[5] 前記燃料噴射制御手段は、前記内燃機関が前記アイドル運転状態にあるとき、主噴 射の燃料噴射時期を失火限界近傍まで遅角させることを特徴とする、請求項 4に記 載の内燃機関の排気浄化装置。
前記内燃機関はディーゼル機関であって、燃料噴射量と燃料噴射時期とを制御する 燃料噴射制御手段を備えると共に、該ディーゼル機関の運転を制御する機関制御 手段を有し、
前記燃料噴射制御手段は、前記内燃機関が前記アイドル運転状態にあるとき、主 噴射の燃料噴射時期を通常時期よりも遅延させ、該主噴射の直前に該主噴射よりも 燃料噴射量の少ないパイロット噴射を少なくとも一回以上行うことを特徴とする、請求 項 1に記載の内燃機関の排気浄化装置。
