Definitions
- the present invention relates to a device for preventing fuel leakage via the venting device of vehicle tanks.
- the invention also relates to use of such a device in a motor vehicle provided with a pair of fuel tanks, and to a motor vehicle with a pair of fuel tanks, provided with a device as above.
- Fuel tanks of engine-powered vehicles are usually equipped with one or more vent valves with the object of preventing any vacuum occurring in the tank and for evacuating air during refuelling.
- Buses are often provided with a pair of fuel tanks, one on each side of the vehicle, filling being effected from one side.
- the tank situated on the opposite side from the filling orifice needs to be provided with a number of valves so that air evacuation causes no problems during refuelling.
- These valves are usually float valves adapted to closing in response to contact with fuel in the tank, in order to prevent leakage.
- such valves have proved not particularly reliable for preventing fuel leakage, because they close too slowly in response to spray or splashing from fuel in the tank, which may result in leakage via the valves.
- the invention thus aims to at least partly solve the problem described above. More specifically, the invention relates to a device associated with a venting device for a fuel tank of a motor vehicle, whereby the venting device comprises at least one valve.
- a vessel for gathering fuel leakage is arranged in communication with the venting device in such a way that the vessel constitutes a temporary container for fuel which leaks via the valve, the vessel being provided with an aperture for evacuation of air which is led out from the tank via the venting device.
- the vessel thus acts as a buffer for any fuel which leaks out via the valve when the contents of the tank are set in motion, e.g. when the vehicle sways.
- the device is so designed that fuel accommodated in the vessel and the hose is drawn back down into the tank by the negative pressure which occurs in the tank when the tank contents shift in the opposite direction.
- the vessel is connected to the valve by a hose, whereby the hose and the vessel together constitute a temporary container for fuel which leaks via the valve.
- the vessel has with advantage a substantially funnel-shaped bottom portion to which the hose is connected, thereby making it easier for the fuel to go back down into the tank.
- the vessel may with advantage be provided with splash protection in the form of at least two internal bulkheads which are arranged at mutually different levels in the vessel and each cover more than half, but less than the whole, of the vessel's internal cross-sectional area.
- the vessel is provided with at least three such bulkheads situated alternately on opposite sides of the vessel so that the bulkheads overlap one another, in order to prevent splashing which might lead to leakage via the aperture.
- the air evacuation aperture is arranged in the upper portion of the vessel, above the uppermost bulkhead and above the highest level which fuel in the vessel may be expected to reach.
- the vessel may of course be made of plastic and the hose is with advantage a flexible rubber hose. It is of course possible, however, to use other materials which one skilled in the art finds appropriate.
- a number of hoses are arranged between the vessel and a corresponding number of valves of the fuel tank.
- the invention also relates to use of a device as above in a motor vehicle provided with a pair of fuel tanks, the device being connected to one or more vent valves of at least one of the tanks.
- the invention also relates to a motor vehicle comprising a pair of fuel tanks provided with a venting device which itself comprises at least one vent valve, a device as above being connected to the venting device.
- Figure 1 depicts a pair of tanks provided with a device according to the invention.
- Figure 2 depicts a cutaway view of a vessel forming part of the device according to the invention.
- Figure 1 depicts a pair of tanks comprising fuel tanks 1a and 1b intended to be arranged above the wheel housings of a bus or the like.
- the tanks are connected together by a pipe (not depicted) and filling with fuel is effected from one side of the vehicle.
- filling is only effected via the filling orifice 2a of tank 1a, and the corresponding filling orifice 2b of tank 1b is therefore not used.
- the respective tanks 1a and 1b each have on their top three vent valves collectively designated 3a and 3b.
- the valves are float valves of known type often used in this context, with a float element adapted to closing the valve in response to contact with liquid.
- a device according to the invention is connected to the valves 3b.
- the corresponding valves 3a of tank 1a i.e. on the "filling side" are sealed, since the venting on this side takes place via the filling orifice 2a and via the filler cap to the filling orifice when filling is not taking place.
- the device according to the invention referred to in this example comprises three hoses 12 connected to vent valves 3b arranged on the top of tank 1b, and a vessel 14 for gathering fuel which leaks via the valves 3b.
- the hoses 12 connect the valves 3b to the vessel 14 and are connected to the bottom portion of the vessel.
- Figure 2 depicts a cutaway view of the vessel 14.
- the vessel 14 has an aperture 18 for evacuation of air which is led out from the tank via the venting device.
- the dimensions of the hoses 12 and the vessel 14 are adapted so that the amount of fuel which may succeed in leaking out via the valves 3b during a "leakage incident" before the latter fully close is contained in the hose and the vessel without rising high enough for leakage via the aperture 18 to occur.
- a corresponding movement of the fuel in the tank takes place, resulting in a negative pressure in the tank which causes the fuel accommodated in the vessel 14 and the hoses 12 to be drawn back down into the tank via the valves, which in this direction are open to liquid flow.
- the bottom portion 16 of the vessel takes the form of a funnel to make it easier for fuel to run back.
- the vessel may for example be of the order of 100x100x50 mm and may be of any desired shape.
- An advantageous configuration is that the vessel has the shape of a house with the roof ridge pointing downwards as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.
- the vessel 14 is with advantage made of plastic, and the hoses 12 are made of flexible rubber tubing.
- a vent hose 22 discharging rearward of the vehicle's rear wheels is with advantage connected to the aperture of the vessel 14, as depicted in Figure 1.
- the vessel 14 is further provided with splash protection in the form of a number of horizontal bulkheads 20 arranged on the inside of the vessel, three such bulkheads being depicted in Figure 2. Each of these bulkheads covers more than half, but less than the whole, of the vessel's internal cross-sectional area.
- the bulkheads 20 are situated alternately on opposite sides in the vessel 14 at different levels so that they overlap one another and thereby prevent splashing of fuel in the vessel.
- the vessel 14 may alternatively be provided with splash protection configured differently from that described above, e.g. in the form of a steelwool entanglement situated in the vessel 14 or in the form of one or more thin filters.
- splash protection configured differently from that described above, e.g. in the form of a steelwool entanglement situated in the vessel 14 or in the form of one or more thin filters.
