- the surface compaction caused by cold forming converts the inherent tensile stress ("shrinkage stress”) produced during welding into compressive stress, whereby internal compressive stresses are introduced both in the weld seam and in the adjacent workpiece areas.
- the average penetration depth of the applied compressive stress is between 0.7 and 1.3 mm.
- the occurring compressive stress maximum is about 50% of the yield strength of the steel grade used.
- the tolerable number of load cycles is significantly increased, especially in tension- and bending-stressed areas, on the one hand with a constant stress amplitude or, vice versa, the tolerable stress amplitude is increased for the same number of cycles.
