Definitions
- the present invention relates to a composite material structure that carries embedded optical fiber for structural monitoring purposes, and more particularly to a composite material structure of an aircraft, as well as a method for its repair.
- Fiber optic sensors can be used effectively to measure thermomechanical deformation, and even detect damage events operating both individually in passive structural monitoring systems, and in combination with other devices, forming active monitoring systems.
- One of its main advantages is its ability to be embedded in composite structures, being intimately integrated into those.
- the present invention is directed to the solution of that inconvenience.
- the present invention proposes a composite structure formed by a plurality of layers that includes an optical fiber for structural monitoring purposes that is, at least in part, embedded in said structure in which the optical fiber has a protective tubular cover in those areas of the embedded part that may need repair.
- this protective cover facilitates access to the optical fiber for repair or maintenance avoiding deterioration.
- the present invention proposes a method of repairing the optical fiber embedded in said composite structure comprising the following steps:
- Figure 1 shows a schematic perspective view of a composite structure known in the art consisting of six layers with an optical fiber embedded between the two central layers longitudinally to the reinforcing fibers and a cross-sectional view of the area A of said structure.
- Figure 2 shows a cross-sectional view of the structure of
- Figure 1 in which using conventional techniques for repairing composite structures, parts of three layers have been removed by sanding, until the embedded optical fiber that has been damaged during the process is reached.
- Figure 3 shows a sectional view of a composite structure according to a first embodiment of the present invention in which the optical fiber embedded between the two central layers of the six that make up the structure has a local protective cover.
- Figure 4 shows in greater detail views in front section and cross section of part B of Figure 3.
- Figure 5 shows the same view of Figure 3 after cutting the protective cover to reach the optical fiber and be able to repair it.
- Figure 6 shows the same view of Figure 5 after removing the protective cover for, after the appropriate maintenance operations, to reconnect the fiber optic line joining its ends.
- Figure 7 shows the same view of Figure 6 after having connected, by welding or any other standard procedure the ends of the optical fiber.
- Figure 8 shows the same view of Figure 7 with the optical fiber repaired and the reconstituted structure.
- Figure 9 shows the same view of Figure 8 with the optical fiber inside a protective cover.
- Figure 10 shows in a view similar to that of Figure 9 a second embodiment of the invention in which the embedded optical fiber is repaired by an external fiber optic line.
- Figure 11 shows the same view of Figure 10 after having connected, by welding or any other standard procedure, the end of the optical fiber embedded with the end of the outer fiber line.
- Figure 12 shows the same view of Figure 11 with the repaired optical fiber and the reconstituted structure.
- Figure 13 shows the same view of Figure 12 with the optical fiber embedded within a protective cover.
- Figure 1 shows a composite structure 11 known in the art formed by a plurality of layers 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23 with an optical fiber 25 embedded within it that can be part of both a network of sensors as of a data transmission element. If for any reason it is necessary to access said fiber optic 25 to proceed with its repair or any type of maintenance operation, it is possible to reach it by means of composite repair techniques, consisting of the local removal of parts of the reinforcement layers 13, 15 until reaching layers 17, 19 where said fiber is embedded.
- the optical fiber 25 is a very fragile element, and the elimination operations of parts of the Layers 13, 15, 17 can damage it, as reflected in Figure 2, so that, following the procedure known in the art, access to the optical fiber 25 without damaging it in order to proceed with its extraction is extremely complex and expensive .
- the structure 11 includes a protective cover 27 of tubular shape that allows to reach the fiber 25 without damaging it as illustrated in Figure 3 and following to proceed with its repair.
- the chances of survival of the optical fiber 25 greatly increase using said cover 27 locally protecting the optical fiber 25 formed by a core 31, a cortex 33 and a coating 33.
- the protective cover 27 is sized so that between it and
- the optical fiber 25 remains an interphase 29 that can be left open during the manufacturing process of the structure so that it is subsequently filled with
- the matrix resin or a filler material such as silicone can be closed to prevent the entry of resin into the tube.
- the protective cover 27 can be made of any material whose toughness allows to reach it without damaging the optical fiber located inside.
- the protective cover 27 can also have the secondary function of facilitating the detection of the fiber 25 in the structure 11 by means of non-destructive inspection techniques (RX, ultrasonic inspection or simply a metal detector).
- RX non-destructive inspection techniques
- Figures 3-9 sequentially illustrate the steps comprising the repair process of the optical fiber 25 embedded in a composite structure 11 according to the present invention in a first embodiment thereof.
- the cover 27 (see Figs. 5 and 6) allowing access to the fiber 25 for its repair or to perform the required maintenance operations by reconnecting the ends 41, 43 previously separated by welding 45 (see Fig. 7). After that, the optical fiber 25 would be relocated in its position within the structure 11 and the removed parts of the layers 13, 15, 17 would be restored (see Figure 8). Optionally, the repaired optical fiber 25 can be provided with a new protection cover 27 (see Fig. 9).
- the procedure would be similar except that the repair of the optical fiber 25 would be performed by connecting one of the ends 51 of the embedded optical fiber 25 to an end 53 of an outer optical fiber 55, thus redirecting the optical signal by an alternative path to the original (see Figs. 10-13).
