Abstract
The tubular railroad axle is a lightweight alternative to the conventional bulk railway car axle used in common railway cars. It's a cylindrical beam that may be total or partially hollowed with variable cross section area along its length. The selected material to be used in the tubular railroad axle has properties that ensure the axle strength and useful life suitable to withstand the design loading capacities. The tubular railroad axle may be manufactured with standard dimensions to ensure the interchangeability with the existing standardized component parts such wheels and bearings
Description
Title: "TUBULAR RAILROAD AXLE"
The present invention relates generally to railway car axles and more particularly to a tubular railroad axle, which is total or partially hollowed.
Nowadays the railway car axles are bulk steel beams obtained from machined hot forged ingots.
As the railroad industry is searching ways to decrease the cars weight, it was developed the tubular railroad axle, which is around 30% lighter than the equivalent conventional bulk axle. The cars weight saving allows an increase in the payload without increase the railway loading and a decre- ase in the fuel consumption and pollutant emission per transported tone.
The axle may be made or by a single beam, or by a beam composed of a number of segments attached mechanically by any means such welding, thread and others. Its dimensions depends of the design which consider, between other factors, the railway gauge, the car payload, the wheel type, the bearing type and the axle material.
The selected material to be used in the tubular railroad axle has properties that ensure the axle strength and useful life suitable to withstand the design loading capacities.
In order to improve the comprehension, some attached dra- wings are presented, followed by the description bellow:
The Figure 01 is a schematic drawing in elevation of a single tubular railroad axle. The numbers show the typical railway car axles sections: 1 -journal; 2 - dust guard seat; 3 - wheel seat; 4 - shaft body.
The Figure 02 is a schematic drawing in elevation of a slice of a single tubular railroad axle. This drawing shows that is permissible the variation of the wall thickness. The numbers show the typical railway car axles sections: 1 -journal; 2 - dust guard seat; 3 - wheel seat; 4 - shaft body.
The Figures 03 and 04 are schematic drawing in elevation of a slice of a single tubular railroad axle. This drawing shows that is permissible the variation of the diameter of the transversal sections, as shows in the shaft body, per example. The numbers shows the typical railway car axles sections: 1 -journal; 2 - dust guard seat; 3 - wheel seat; 4 - shaft body.
The tubular railroad axle may be manufactured with standard dimensions to ensure the interchangeability with the existing standardized component parts such wheels and bearings.
