May be generated, covering the active site of the catalyst, resulting in reduced catalyst function or clogging of the catalyst. If the cell pitch of the catalyst is increased in order to suppress this clogging, the amount of the supported catalyst may decrease or the contact frequency between the exhaust gas and the catalyst may decrease. In any case, the exhaust gas purification performance of the catalyst may be reduced.
- a hydrolysis catalyst for promoting the hydrolysis of urea or a dispersion plate for dispersing urea when arranged in the exhaust passage upstream of the catalyst, the hydrolysis catalyst or the dispersion plate may be clogged.
- the hydrolysis catalyst or the dispersion plate when HC, C0 in the exhaust gas reacts with urea or ammonia, cyanide may be generated. Therefore, if urea is supplied to the catalyst when a large amount of HC or CO is contained in the exhaust gas, urea or ammonia cannot be used effectively for NOX reduction, and a large amount of cyanide may be generated. - fuel is supplied from the HC addition valve 38 to increase the amount of HC contained in the exhaust gas in order to perform the temperature rise control.
- the increased amount of HC is burned by the particulate filter 19 a, so that the temperature of the particulate filter 19 a is increased.
- the amount of formaldehyde in the exhaust gas flowing into the catalyst 22 is larger than the allowable amount, and the amount of formaldehyde in the exhaust gas flowing into the catalyst 22 is the allowable amount.
- the urea supply to the catalyst 22 is stopped when it is judged that the amount is larger than the above. As a result, the production of a large amount of urea resin on the catalyst 22 is prevented.
- urea is supplied to the catalyst 22 by an amount determined according to the amount of NOx flowing into the catalyst 22 or the amount of urea stored in the catalyst 22.
- the formaldehyde that flows into the catalyst 22 can be oxidized and reduced by the catalyst 19. Therefore, urea supply is allowed when the catalyst 19 is activated even when the engine is started, during cold operation, or when the amount of HC is increased. Therefore, the supply of urea is prohibited when starting the engine, during cold operation, or when increasing the amount of H 2 C, and when the catalyst 19 is inactive.

- the routine proceeds to step 102, where it is determined whether the amount of HC in the exhaust gas flowing into the catalyst 22 is increased.
- the routine proceeds to step 103 and urea supply to the catalyst 2 2 is allowed.
- step 1 0 0 At the time of the engine start, at the time of cold operation at step 1 0 1, when the amount of HC is increasing at step 1 0 2, the process proceeds to step 1 0 4 to determine whether the catalyst 19 is inactive or not. Determined.
- the routine proceeds to step 103, and urea supply to the catalyst 22 is allowed.
- the process proceeds to step 105, and urea supply to the catalyst 22 is prohibited.
- the catalyst 19 can also be composed of a NO x storage reduction catalyst.
- This Nx storage reduction catalyst 19 consists of a precious metal catalyst and a Nx absorbent.
- NO x storage reduction catalyst 19 When NO x storage reduction catalyst 19 is placed in the exhaust passage of an internal combustion engine, the ratio of the air and fuel (hydrocarbon) supplied into the engine intake passage, combustion chamber and exhaust passage upstream of the NO X storage catalyst
- the NO x absorbent absorbs NO X when the air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas is lean, and releases the absorbed NO X when the oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas decreases, This NO X is reduced by reducing agents such as HC and C0 contained in the exhaust gas.
- N O X in the exhaust gas is absorbed into the N O X storage reduction catalyst 19. If the air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas flowing into the NO x storage reduction catalyst 19 is lean, S 0 X in the exhaust gas is also absorbed into the NO x storage reduction catalyst 19.
- the HC addition valve 3 From 8 to HC is added.
- the catalyst 19 can be composed of a NO x selective reduction catalyst that can selectively reduce NO x under an excess of oxygen.
- HC is added from the HC addition valve 38 to reduce Nx.
- HC is added from the HC addition valve 3 8 and the deposit is blown away by this HC. .
- the amount of HC in the exhaust gas is increased. Accordingly, at this time, it may be determined that the amount of formaldehyde in the inflowing exhaust gas is larger than the allowable amount.
- HC is added from the HC addition valve 38 to add HC to the exhaust gas.
- it is included in the exhaust gas by supplying additional fuel from the fuel injection valve 6, for example, during the exhaust stroke after the main fuel is supplied near the compression top dead center, or by retarding the injection timing of the main fuel.
- the amount of HC produced may be increased.
- the supply of urea to the catalyst 22 is stopped when it is determined that the amount of formaldehyde in the exhaust gas flowing into the catalyst 22 is larger than the allowable amount. Yes.
- the urea supply amount to the catalyst 22 may be corrected to decrease at this time.
- cyanide is produced when urea or ammonia reacts with HC and CO. Therefore, if urea is supplied when a large amount of HC and CO is contained in the exhaust gas, a large amount of cyanide will be generated. There is it.
- the amount of formaldehyde in the embodiment according to the present invention described above may be considered as the amount of HC or CO.
