Abstract

Active materials employing a composition containing essential oils adsorbed in combination with a solvent within a micro-porous solid material have been developed. The subsequent controlled release of essential oil vapour provides numerous applications including anti-microbial properties and extension of shelf life to packaged perishable goods. The active material may be presented in the form of a polymeric or natural fibre substrate coated or printed with the composition or in the form of granules or tablets optionally contained within a porous sachet.
