Abstract

 異常である発光素子に確実に逆電圧を印加してリフレッシュ電流を流し、異常である発光素子を回復させることができるとともに、正常な発光素子にストレスを与えることを回避できる有機エレクトロルミネッセント発光装置および照明器具を提供する。  この発光装置100は、AC電源1を整流するダイオード・ブリッジDBから直流電力が供給されるPFC回路2と、PFC回路2の出力電圧を発光素子に供給する電圧に変換する降圧チョッパ回路4と、発光素子8に供給する電流を切り替える順逆反転回路6と、発光素子電流検知回路11、発光素子電圧検知回路12、ドライブIC13、14およびマイコン16を含み、発光素子8の電圧および電流を制御する発光素子電圧・電流制御回路7とを有する。

Description

発光装置
 本発明は、発光装置に係り、特に、異常である発光素子に確実に逆電圧を印加してリフレッシュ電流を流し、異常である発光素子を回復させることができるとともに、正常な発光素子にストレスを与えることを回避できる発光装置に関する。
 有機エレクトロルミネッセント装置は、有機物中に注入された電子と正孔が再結合して生じた励起子によって発光が起こる現象を利用した発光装置である。近年では、この有機エレクトロルミネッセント装置を用いたディスプレイの開発が盛んに行われている。これは、有機エレクトロルミネッセント装置が、液晶表示装置と比較して、広い視野角、速い応答速度および高いコントラストなどを有することによるものである。
 一般に、有機エレクトロルミネッセント装置は、陰極と陽極の間に有機層が挟持された構造を有している。そして、電圧を印加すると、陰極からは電子が、陽極からは正孔がそれぞれキャリアとして注入される。これらのキャリアが有機層の内部で再結合すると、励起子が発生して発光が起こる。
 このように有機エレクトロルミネッセント装置は、一般的に発光層と正孔輸送層や電子輸送層等とを含む有機層と、その有機層を介して対向配置された一対の電極(陰極及び陽極)とを備えている。通常、有機層は、例えば100nm程度といった非常に薄い層厚を有するものである。従って、微少異物の混入や有機層の形成ムラ等に起因して、電極間でリーク不良が発生したり、電極間の絶縁耐圧性不良等が発生したりする恐れがある。
 このような不良が発生すると、有機エレクトロルミネッセント装置駆動時に黒点や暗線、黒線が観察されることとなり、有機エレクトロルミネッセント装置の表示品位が低下する。また、黒点等には至らないまでも、十分な絶縁耐圧性を有さない箇所がある場合は、有機エレクトロルミネッセント装置駆動中にリーク電流が発生してしまう恐れもある。特に、近年では有機エレクトロルミネッセント装置の大型化が進み、このような不良の発生確率が増大する傾向にあり、大きな問題となっている。
 このような状況に鑑み、例えば、複数種類の有機層に、その発光色毎に相互に異なる印加条件で逆バイアス電圧を印加して絶縁不良部を絶縁化することにより、各々、発光色が相互に異なる発光層を少なくとも含む複数種類の有機層と、複数種類の有機層を介して対向配置された一対の電極とを備えた有機エレクトロルミネッセント装置の一対の電極間の絶縁不良部を修復する方法が知られている(例えば、特許文献1参照)。
 また、基板の上に、陽極、発光層を含む有機層および陰極が順次積層されてなる積層体が形成された有機エレクトロルミネッセント素子の製造方法において、陰極が、第1の導電層、バッファ層および第2の導電層が順次配置されて形成され、積層体を形成した後にエージングを行うことを特徴とする有機エレクトロルミネッセント素子の製造方法が知られている。
 これによれば第1の導電層、バッファ層および第2の導電層を順次積層して陰極を形成し、また積層体を形成した後にエージングを行うことによって、従来より駆動電圧の低い有機エレクトロルミネッセント素子を製造することができる(例えば、特許文献2参照)。
 また、有機エレクトロルミネッセント素子に所望の直流電圧を供給する直流電源手段と、直流電源手段の電圧供給の停止を検出する検出手段と、直流電源手段の電圧供給が停止されたときに有機エレクトロルミネッセント素子に逆特性の電圧を供給する逆電圧供給手段とを具備した照明装置も提案されている(特許文献3)。

 このように、特許文献1の有機エレクトロルミネッセント素子の修復方法においては、有機エレクトロルミネッセント素子が異常電圧を示した場合に、リフレッシュのために順逆反転回路を動作させて逆電圧を印加しても、正常な有機エレクトロルミネッセント素子には電流が流れないことから、正常な有機エレクトロルミネッセント素子を消灯し、個別にリフレッシュのための時間を設ける必要がある。
 一方、特許文献3においては、直流電源手段の電圧供給の停止が検出されたときに有機エレクトロルミネッセント素子に逆特性の電圧を供給するようにしているため、この場合も、別途リフレッシュのための時間を設ける必要がある。
 また、リフレッシュ不要なエレクトロルミネッセント素子に逆電圧をかけても点灯できないだけでなく、ストレスがかかることになる。
 また、直流電流の供給を受けて発光する複数のエレクトロルミネッセント素子などの発光素子を有する発光装置では、発光素子が異常電圧を示した場合に、リフレッシュのために順逆反転回路を動作させて逆電圧を印加すると、正常な発光素子には電流が流れないことから、発光素子のリフレッシュを行うことができない。
 本発明は、前記実情に鑑みてなされたものであって、異常である発光素子に確実に逆電圧を印加してリフレッシュ電流を流し、異常である発光素子を回復させることができるとともに、正常な発光素子にストレスを与えることを回避できる発光装置を提供することを目的としている。
 本発明は、直流電流の供給を受けて発光する単数または複数の発光素子と、前記発光素子に一定以上の電流を供給する直流電源回路とを有する発光装置であって、前記発光素子に印加される電圧を検知する発光素子電圧検知回路と、前記発光素子電圧検知回路が前記発光素子の異常を検知した場合に、異常を検知した発光素子に逆方向電圧を印加する順逆反転回路とを備えていることを特徴とする。
 上記構成によれば、発光素子に割当てられる順逆反転回路を備えるとともに、発光素子に印加される電圧を検知する発光素子電圧検知回路を具備しているので、異常である発光素子を検出することができ、異常である発光素子に確実に逆方向電圧を印加してリフレッシュ電流を流し、異常である発光素子を回復させることができる。
 また、本発明の発光装置において、前記順逆反転回路は、異常を検知した発光素子に逆方向電圧を印加する場合に、正常な発光素子を短絡する短絡スイッチを備えていることを特徴とする。
 上記構成によれば、発光素子に割当てられる順逆反転回路と、発光素子ごとに備えられている短絡スイッチとを有するので、異常である発光素子に確実に逆電圧を印加する一方、正常な発光素子には逆電圧を印加することを回避でき、異常である発光素子を回復させるとともに正常な発光素子にストレスを与えるのを回避することができる。
 また、本発明の発光装置において、前記複数の発光素子は、直列に接続され、前記短絡スイッチは、前記複数の発光素子のおのおのに並列に接続され、前記発光素子電圧検知回路は、前記複数の発光素子のおのおのに印加される電圧を検知し、電圧値の変化により発光素子の異常を検知することを特徴とする。
 上記構成によれば、発光素子の異常を検知する際、発光素子に発生する電圧値の変化のみで検知できるので、部品点数、制御対象を削減することができる。
 また、本発明の発光装置において、前記短絡スイッチは、電界効果トランジスタであることを特徴とする。
 上記構成によれば、電界効果トランジスタを高速動作させて正常な発光素子に逆電圧を印加することを回避でき、正常な発光素子にストレスを与えることを回避できる。
 また、本発明の発光装置において、前記短絡スイッチは、サイリスタであることを特徴とする。
 上記構成によれば、発光素子に逆方向電圧を印加すると、サイリスタが自動的に導通して発光素子を保護するので、サイリスタを駆動するためのドライブICが不要になり、発光装置の構成を簡素化することができる。
 また、本発明の発光装置は、前記順逆反転回路が発光素子に流れる電流を検知する発光素子電流検知回路を備えることを特徴とする。
 上記構成によれば、発光素子の異常を検知する際、単数または複数の発光素子に流れる電流値の変化のみで検知できるので、部品点数、制御対象を削減することができる。
 また、本発明の発光装置において、前記順逆反転回路は、電源間に直列接続され、その直列接続点が前記単数または複数の発光素子の一端に接続される第1および第2のスイッチング素子と、前記電源間に直列接続され、その直列接続点が前記単数または複数の発光素子の他端に接続される第3および第4のスイッチング素子とを有し、前記第2および第3のスイッチング素子が導通して異常を検知した発光素子に逆方向電圧を印加してリフレッシュし、前記第1および第4のスイッチング素子が導通してリフレッシュした発光素子に順方向電圧を印加することを特徴とする。
 上記構成によれば、発光素子に逆向きの電圧を印加することで発光素子をリフレッシュすることができ、異常のある発光素子を復帰させることができるので発光素子の寿命向上につながる。
 また、本発明の発光装置において、前記発光素子電圧検知回路は、前記単数または複数の発光素子の電圧変化により、異常な発光素子が正常に復帰したことを検知し、前記順逆反転回路は、正常に復帰した発光素子に順方向電圧を印加することを特徴とする。
 上記構成によれば、異常な発光素子が正常に復帰した場合、再度発光素子を発光させることができるので、発光素子を長寿命化することができる。また発光素子に発生する電圧値の変化のみで検知できるので、部品点数、制御対象を削減することができる。
 また、本発明の発光装置において、前記発光素子電流検知回路は、前記単数または複数の発光素子の電流変化により、異常な発光素子が正常に復帰したことを検知し、前記順逆反転回路は、正常に復帰した発光素子に順方向電圧を印加することを特徴とする。
 上記構成によれば、異常な発光素子が正常に復帰した場合、再度発光素子を発光させることができるので、発光素子を長寿命化することができる。また発光素子に発生する電流値の変化のみで検知できるので、部品点数、制御対象を削減することができる。
 また、本発明の照明器具は、単数または複数の有機エレクトロルミネッセント素子から成る複数の発光素子を具備した上記発光装置で構成される。
 上記構成によれば、異常である発光素子に確実に逆電圧を印加してリフレッシュ電流を流し、異常である発光素子を回復させることができるとともに、正常な発光素子にストレスを与えることを回避できる。
 以上説明したように、本発明にかかる発光装置によれば、発光素子に割当てられる順逆反転回路を備えるとともに、発光素子に印加される電圧を検知する発光素子電圧検知回路を備えているので、発光素子の異常を検出し、異常である発光素子に確実に逆電圧を印加することができ、リフレッシュ電流を流して異常である発光素子を回復させることができ、且つ正常な発光素子にストレスを与えることを回避できる。

(実施の形態1)
 図1は、本発明の実施の形態にかかる発光装置100の構成を説明するための図である。本実施の形態の発光装置100は、AC電源1を整流するダイオード・ブリッジDBから直流電力が供給される力率改善回路2(以下、PFC(Power Factor Correction)回路2という)と、PFC回路2の出力電圧を発光素子に供給する電圧に変換する降圧チョッパ回路4と、発光素子8に供給する電流を切り替える順逆反転回路6と、発光素子電流検知回路11、発光素子電圧検知回路12、ドライブIC13、14およびマイコン16を含み、発光素子8の電圧および電流を制御する発光素子電圧・電流制御回路7とを有する。
 このように本実施の形態の発光装置100によれば、発光素子8に割当てられる順逆反転回路6を備えているので、異常となった発光素子8に確実に逆方向電圧を印加してリフレッシュ電流を流し、異常となった発光素子8を回復させることができる。また、発光素子電圧検知回路12は、発光素子8に発生する電圧値の変化のみで発光素子8の異常を検知するので、部品点数、制御対象を削減することができる。
 図1により本発明の実施の形態1を説明する。図1においてVlaは発光素子8に印加される電圧、Ilaは発光素子8に流れる電流である。また実施の形態1における発光素子8は有機エレクトロルミネッセントパネルであり、陽極と陰極を有する。陽極から陰極に流れたとき有機エレクトロルミネッセントパネルは発光する。
 まず、構成に関して説明する。PFC回路2は、AC電圧からDC電圧に変換する回路である。PFC回路2のスイッチング素子Q1は数十kHz~数百kHzで動作している。なお、PFC回路2でなくとも直流電源となる回路方式、又は直流電源でもよい。
 降圧チョッパ回路4は、DC電圧からDC電圧に変換する回路である。降圧チョッパ回路4のスイッチング素子Q2は数十kHz~数百kHzで動作している。なお、降圧チョッパ回路4でなくとも直流電源となる回路方式、又は直流電源でもよい。
 次に、動作に関して説明する。順逆反転回路6は、発光素子8が正常な状態の時はスイッチング素子Q3、Q6がオン、スイッチング素子Q4、Q5がオフである。このとき、発光素子8の陽極から陰極に向かって電流が流れており、発光素子8は発光している。
 発光素子8に異常が発生した場合、主な動作の流れは、
(1)発光素子8の異常を検知する。
(2)発光素子8に通常と逆向きの電圧を印加する。
(3)発光素子8が正常に復帰したことを検知する。
(4)発光素子8に通常の電流を流す、である。
 動作の流れのタイムチャートを図2に示す。
(1)発光素子8の異常を検知する(T1)。
発光素子8が異常になる場合、主に短絡になるケースが多い。そのためVla(発光素子に印加される電圧)が低下する。発光素子電圧検知回路12によりVlaが低下したこと
を検知し、マイコン16に信号を送る。
(2)発光素子8に通常と逆向きの電圧を印加する(T2)。
VlaがVth1まで低下するとマイコン16がドライブIC1、2(13、14)に信号を送り、スイッチング素子Q3、Q6をオフしてスイッチング素子Q4、Q5をオンする。そのため発光素子8に通常とは逆向きの電圧が印加される。このとき、発光素子8には逆向きの電流(リフレッシュ電流)が流れる。
(3)発光素子8が正常に復帰したことを検知する(T3)。
発光素子8が復帰すると、短絡状態から開放状態に移る。そのためVlaが-Vin(Vinは降圧チョッパ出力電圧C2間電圧)まで低下する。発光素子電圧検知回路12によりVlaが低下したことを検知しマイコン16に信号を送る。また、短絡状態から開放状態に移るため、発光素子8に流れる電流値Ilaが上昇する。発光素子電流検知回路11によりIlaが上昇したことを検知しマイコン16に信号を送る。
 発光素子8が復帰したことを検知する条件は (図2参照)、
i) VlaがVth2以下に低下した場合、
ii) IlaがIth1以上に上昇した場合、
iii)i)、ii) 両方を満たした場合、
以上3つのうちどの条件でもよい。
(4)発光素子8に通常の電流を流す(T4)。
VlaがVth2まで低下する(IlaがIth1以上になる)と、マイコン16がドライブIC1、2(13、14)に信号を送り、スイッチング素子Q3、Q6をオンしてスイッチング素子Q4、Q5をオフする。そのため発光素子8に通常時と同じ向きに電流が流れて発光素子8が発光する。
 このように本実施の形態の発光装置100によれば、発光素子8に割当てられる順逆反転回路6を備えているので、異常となった発光素子8に確実に逆方向電圧を印加してリフレッシュ電流を流し、異常となった発光素子8を回復させることができる。
また、異常な発光素子8が正常に復帰した場合、再度発光素子8を発光させることができるので、発光素子8を長寿命化することができる。さらに、発光素子電圧検知回路12または発光素子電流検知回路11により、発光素子8に発生する電圧値または電流値の変化のみで発光素子8の正常復帰を検知できるので、部品点数、制御対象を削減することができる。
(実施の形態2)
 図3は、本発明の実施の形態2にかかる発光装置100の構成を説明するための図である。同図のVlaは発光素子8a、8b、8c全体に印加される電圧、Vla1は発光素子8aに印加される電圧、Vla2は発光素子8bに印加される電圧、Vla3は発光素子8cに印加される電圧である。また、Ilaは発光素子8a、8b、8cに流れる電流である。
 本実施の形態においても、実施の形態1と同様に、発光素子8a、8b、8cは有機エレクトロルミネッセントパネルであり、各発光素子8a、8b、8cは陽極と陰極を1対づつ有している。まず、構成に関して、PFC回路2は実施の形態1と同じであり、降圧チョッパ回路4も実施の形態1と同じである。順逆反転回路6は、各々の発光素子8a、8b、8cにFET(Q7、Q8、Q9)が1個ずつ並列に接続されている。
 次に、動作に関して説明する。発光素子8a、8b、8cが正常な状態の時はスイッチング素子Q3、Q6がオン、スイッチング素子Q4、Q5がオフである。このとき、発光素子8a、8b、8cの陽極から陰極に向かって電流が流れており、発光素子8a、8b、8cは発光している。正常な発光素子8a、8b、8cは逆向きに電圧を印加しても電流は流れず、異常が発生した発光素子8a、8b、8cは逆向きに電圧を印加すると流れる特性を持つ。
 発光素子(例えば8a)に異常が発生した場合、主な動作の流れは、以下のとおりである。
(1)発光素子8aの異常を検知する。
(2)異常が発生した発光素子8aを特定する。
(3)異常が発生した発光素子8aに通常と逆向きの電圧を印加する。それ以外の正常な素子8b、8cは、各素子8b、8cに並列に接続されているFETQ8、Q9をオンにして、正常な各々の発光素子8b、8cに逆電圧が印加されないよう制御する。
(4)異常が発生した発光素子8aが正常に復帰したことを検知する。
(5)発光素子8a、(8b、8c)に通常の電流を流す。
 動作のタイムチャートを図4に示す。但し、図4のタイムチャートと以下の説明は発光素子8aに異常が発生したことを想定して説明している。
(1)発光素子8aの異常を検知する。
発光素子8aが異常になる場合、主に短絡になるケースが多い。そのため発光素子8aに印加される電圧が低下する。実施の形態2では、発光素子8aに異常が発生しているので、Vla、Vla1が低下する。発光素子電圧検知回路12によりVla、Vla1が低下したことを検知し、マイコン16に信号を送る。
 発光素子8aに異常が発生したことを検知する条件は、
i) VlaがVth1以下に低下した場合、
ii) Vla1がVth3以下に低下した場合、
iii) i)、ii) 両方とも満たした場合、
以上の3つのうちどの条件でもよい。
(2)異常が発生した発光素子8aを特定する。
正常な発光素子の場合、一定電流が流れていれば発光素子両端に印加される電圧に変化がない。実施の形態2の場合、発光素子8aに印加される電圧Vla1が低下しているので、発光素子電圧検知回路12から送られて来る信号により、発光素子8aに異常が発生したとマイコン16が判別する。
(3)異常が発生した発光素子8aに逆向きの電圧を印加し、且つ正常な発光素子8b、8cに電圧を印加しない。
 ステップ(2)で異常が発生した発光素子8aを特定できた。前述のように、正常な発光素子8b、8cは逆向きに電圧を印加しても電流は流れず、異常が発生した発光素子8aは逆向きに電圧を印加すると流れる特性を持つので、異常が発生した発光素子8aに逆向きに電流(リフレッシュ電流)を流すために、マイコン16は正常な発光素子8b、8cに並列に接続されているFET(Q8、Q9)にゲート信号を入力する。
 実施の形態2では発光素子8aに異常が発生しているので、マイコン16がドライブIC3(15)に信号を入力して、スイッチング素子Q8、Q9にゲート信号を入力し、発光素子8b、8cを短絡させる。同時にスイッチング素子Q3、Q6をオフ、スイッチング素子Q4、Q5をオンにして発光素子8aへ逆向きの電圧を印加する。
 その結果、電流は「Q4 → Q9 → Q8 → 発光素子8a → Q5」 の経路で流れ
るので、異常が発生したパネルのみ逆向きに電流(リフレッシュ電流)を流し、その他の正常な発光素子8b、8cに逆向きに電圧を印加しない。
(4)発光素子8aが正常に復帰したことを検知する。
発光素子8aが復帰すると、短絡状態から開放状態に移る。そのためVlaが-Vin(Vinは降圧チョッパ出力電圧C2間電圧)まで低下する。発光素子電圧検知回路12によりVlaが低下したことを検知してマイコン16に信号を送る。Vla1も同様に-Vinまで低下する。また、短絡状態から開放状態に移るため、発光素子8aに流れる電流値Ilaが上昇する。発光素子電流検知回路11によりIlaが上昇したことを検知しマイコン16に信号を送る。
 発光素子8aが復帰したことを検知する条件は (図4参照)、
i) VlaがVth2以下に低下した場合、
ii) Vla1がVth4以下に低下した場合、
ii) IlaがIth1以上に上昇した場合、
iv) i)、ii)、iii) のうち2つ満たした場合、
v)  i)、ii)、iii) のうち3つとも全て満たした場合、
以上5つのうちどの条件でもよい。
(5)発光素子8aに通常の電流を流す。
ステップ(4)に記載したi)~v) のいずれかの条件を満たすと、マイコン16がドライブIC1、2(13、14)に信号を送り、スイッチング素子Q3、Q6をオンしてスイッチング素子Q4、Q5をオフする。また、マイコン16はステップ(3)でスイッチング素子Q8、Q9にゲート信号を入力していたが、その信号を停止する。そのため発光素子8b、8cに通常時と同じ向きに電流が流れて発光素子8a、8b、8cが発光する。
 このように本実施の形態の発光装置100によれば、発光素子8a、8b、8cに割当てられる順逆反転回路6と、発光素子8a、8b、8cごとに備えられている短絡スイッチQ7、Q8、Q9とを有するので、異常である発光素子8aに確実に逆電圧を印加する一方、正常な発光素子8b、8cには逆電圧を印加することを回避でき、異常である発光素子8aを回復させることができる。
 また、短絡スイッチQ7、Q8、Q9は、高速動作可能な電界効果トランジスタ(FET)で構成されるので、正常な発光素子8b、8cに逆電圧を印加することを高速に回避でき、正常な発光素子8b、8cにストレスを与えることを回避できる。
(実施の形態3)
 図5は、本発明の実施の形態3にかかる発光装置100の構成を説明するための図である。同図のVlaは発光素子8a、8b、8c全体に印加される電圧、Vla1は発光素子8aに印加される電圧、Vla2は発光素子8bに印加される電圧、Vla3は発光素子8cに印加される電圧である。また、Ilaは発光素子8a、8b、8cに流れる電流で
ある。実施の形態1と同様に、発光素子8a、8b、8cは有機エレクトロルミネッセントパネルであり、各発光素子8a、8b、8cは陽極と陰極を1対ずつ有している。
 まず、構成に関して、PFC回路2は実施の形態1と同じであり、降圧チョッパ回路4も実施の形態1と同じである。順逆反転回路6は、各々の発光素子8a、8b、8cに抵抗R11、R12、R13、コンデンサC11、サイリスタD11から構成される異常短絡回路9a、抵抗R14、R15、R16、コンデンサC12、サイリスタD12から構成される異常短絡回路9b、抵抗R17、R18、R19、コンデンサC13、サイリスタD13から構成される異常短絡回路9cが1個ずつ並列に接続されている。(図5、図8参照.図8は図5の要部拡大図である。)
 次に、動作に関して説明する。発光素子8a、8b、8cが正常な状態の時はスイッチング素子Q3、Q6がオン、スイッチング素子Q4、Q5がオフである。このとき、発光素子8a、8b、8cの陽極から陰極に向かって電流が流れており、発光素子8a、8b、8cは発光している。
 発光素子(例えば8a)に異常が発生した場合、主な動作の流れは、
(1)発光素子8aの異常を検知する。
(2)発光素子8aに通常と逆向きの電圧を印加する。異常が発生した発光素子8aに逆向きに電流が流れ(リフレッシュ電流)、それ以外の正常な素子8b、8cは各素子8b、8cに並列に接続されている異常短絡回路9b、9cが作動して、正常な各々の発光素子8b、8cに逆電圧が印加されないよう短絡する。
(3)異常が発生した発光素子8aが正常に復帰したことを検知する。
(4)発光素子8a、8b、8cに通常の電流を流す。
 動作のタイムチャートを図6に示す。但し、図6のタイムチャートと以下の説明は発光素子8aに異常が発生したことを想定して説明している。
(1)発光素子8aの異常を検知する(T1)。
発光素子8aが異常になる場合、主に短絡になるケースが多い。そのため発光素子8aに印加される電圧が低下する。実施の形態3では、発光素子8aに異常が発生しているので、Vla、Vla1が低下する。発光素子電圧検知回路12によりVla、Vla1が低下したことを検知し、マイコン16に信号を送る。
 発光素子8aに異常が発生したことを検知する条件は、
i)   VlaがVth1以下に低下した場合、
ii)   Vla1がVth4以下に低下した場合、
iii)  i)、ii)両方とも満たした場合、
以上の3つのうちどの条件でもよい。
(2)発光素子8aに逆向きの電圧を印加し、正常な発光素子8b、8cには各々に並列に接続されている異常短絡回路9b、9cが動作して、正常な発光素子8b、8cを短絡する(T2)。
 ステップ(1)で発光素子8aの異常を検知するとマイコン16がドライブIC1、2(13、14)に信号を入力して、スイッチング素子Q3、Q6をオフ、スイッチング素子Q4、Q5をオンにして発光素子8aへ逆向きの電圧を印加する。
 正常な発光素子8b、8cは逆向きに電圧を印加しても電流は流れず、異常が発生した発光素子8aは逆向きに電圧を印加すると流れる特性を持つ。発光素子8aに異常が発生しているので、スイッチング素子Q3、Q6をオフ、スイッチング素子Q4、Q5をオンにすると流れる電流経路はスイッチング素子Q4→異常短絡回路9c→異常短絡回路9b→発光素子8a→スイッチング素子Q5 の順で電流が流れる。
 次に、異常短絡回路9a、9b、9cの動作について説明する。異常短絡回路9cを例に説明する。図5の順逆反転回路6のスイッチング素子Q3、Q6がオフ、スイッチング
素子Q4、Q5がオンした状態では、まず初めに電流はR17→C13、R18の順で流れる。そのためC13間電圧は上昇する。サイリスタD13にはアノードからカソード間に順方向電流が流れるように電圧が印加されているのでC13間の電圧がある値以上になると、サイリスタD13がオンする。
 異常短絡回路9bも同様の原理でD12がオンするので、正常な発光素子9b、9cを短絡することになる。以上のことから、スイッチング素子Q3、Q6をオフ、スイッチング素子Q4、Q5をオンにして発光素子8aに逆電圧を印加すると正常な発光素子8b、8cに電圧が印加されず、異常の発生した発光素子8aに電圧が印加されて逆向きに電流が流れる。
(3)異常が発生した発光素子8aが正常に復帰したことを検知する(T3)。
発光素子8aが復帰すると、短絡状態から開放状態に移る。そのため逆向きの電流は発光素子8aには流れず異常短絡回路9aに流れる。このときVla、Vla1は低下し、Ilaは上昇する。この間、異常短絡回路9aに電流が流れR11を介してC11間電圧が上昇する。C11間電圧がVth3以上になるとサイリスタD11がオンするため、VlaVla1が上昇してIlaが低下する。
 発光素子電圧検知回路12、発光素子電流検知回路11により発光素子8aが復帰したことを検知する条件は(図6参照)、発光素子8aが復帰してまだサイリスタD11がオンしていない時に、
i)   VlaがVth2以下に低下した場合、
ii)  Vla1がVth5以下に低下した場合、
ii)  IlaがIth1以上に上昇した場合、
iv)  i)、ii)、iii) のうち2つ満たした場合、
v)  i)、ii)、iii) のうち3つとも全て満たした場合、
 発光素子8aが復帰して、サイリスタD11がオンしている時に、
vi) VlaがVth2以上に上昇した場合、
vii) Vla1がVth5以上に上昇した場合、
viii) IlaがIth1以下に低下した場合、
ix)  vi)、vii)、viii) のうち2つ満たした場合、
x)  vi)、vii)、viii) のうち3つとも全て満たした場合、
以上のi)~x) のうちどの条件でもよい。
(4)発光素子8aに通常の電流を流す(T4)。
ステップ(3)に記載したi)~x) のいずれかの条件を満たすと、マイコン16がドライブIC1、2(13、14)に信号を送り、スイッチング素子Q3、Q6をオンしてスイッチング素子Q4、Q5をオフするように制御する。発光素子8a、8b、8cに通常時と同じ向きに電流が流れて発光素子8a、8b、8cが発光する。
 このように本実施の形態の発光装置100によれば、発光素子8a、8b、8cに割当てられる順逆反転回路6と、発光素子8a、8b、8cごとに備えられている異常短絡回路9a、9b、9cとを有するので、異常である発光素子8aに確実に逆電圧を印加する一方、正常な発光素子8b、8cには逆電圧を印加することを回避でき、異常である発光素子8aを回復させることができる。
 また、異常となった発光素子8aに逆方向電圧を印加する場合、サイリスタD12、13が自動的に導通して正常な発光素子8b、8cを保護するので、サイリスタD11、12、13を駆動するためのドライブICが不要になり、発光装置100の構成を簡素化することができる。
 以下本発明の実施の形態で用いられる発光素子としての有機エレクトロルミネッセント素子について説明する。
 図7は、本発明の実施の形態で用いられる有機エレクトロルミネッセントを用いた照明器具200の概略構成を説明するための図である。照明器具200は有機発光層29とそれに電力を供給する透光性電極ITO28、アルミ電極30、有機発光層29を保護するためのガラス27、31で挟まれている発光素子32と発光素子32に電力を供給する電子部品23、プリント基板24を含み、ケース22に収納されている。21は発光面、25はケース上面、26はケース下面を示す。また、前記実施の形態1乃至3で説明した発光装置の順逆反転回路を含む点灯回路は電力を供給する給電部(図示省略)と電子部品23とプリント基板24で構成される。
 上記構成によれば、有機エレクトロルミネッセント照明器具200に含まれる発光素子が異常となった場合に、異常となった発光素子に確実に逆電圧を印加してリフレッシュ電流を流し、異常となった発光素子を回復させることができるとともに、正常な発光素子にストレスを与えることを回避できる。
 なお、前記実施の形態では、発光素子として有機エレクトロルミネッセント素子を用いた場合について説明したが、有機エレクトロルミネッセント素子に限定されることなく、無機エレクトロルミネッセント素子、LEDなど、電極間に電圧を印加することによって発光する素子などにおいて、絶縁不良部を修復することで、リフレッシュできる他の素子にも適用可能であることはいうまでもない。
 また、前記実施の形態では、照明器具について説明したが、照明器具に限定されることなく、露光用光源などの各種光源に適用可能であることはいうまでもない。
 本出願は、2008年3月26日出願の日本特許出願(特願2008-080241)、に基づくものであり、その内容はここに参照として取り込まれる。
 本発明は、異常である発光素子に確実に逆電圧を印加してリフレッシュ電流を流し、異常である発光素子を回復させることができるとともに、正常な発光素子にストレスを与えることを回避できる有機エレクトロルミネッセント発光装置および照明器具として利用可能である。

Claims (5)

  1.  直流電流の供給を受けて発光する複数の発光素子と、
     発光素子に一定以上の電流を供給する直流電源回路と、
     前記発光素子に印加される電圧を検知する発光素子電圧検知回路と、
     前記発光素子電圧検知回路が前記発光素子の異常を検知した場合に、異常を検知した発光素子に逆方向電圧を印加する順逆反転回路とを備えた発光装置。
  2.  請求項1記載の発光装置であって、
     前記順逆反転回路は、異常を検知した発光素子に逆方向電圧を印加する場合に、正常な発光素子を短絡する短絡スイッチを備えた発光装置。
  3.  請求項1記載の発光装置であって、
     前記複数の発光素子は、直列に接続され、
     前記短絡スイッチは、前記複数の発光素子のおのおのに並列に接続され、
     前記発光素子電圧検知回路は、前記複数の発光素子のおのおのに印加される電圧を検知し、電圧値の変化により発光素子の異常を検知する発光装置。
  4.  請求項1記載の発光装置であって、
     前記順逆反転回路は、前記発光素子に流れる電流を検知する発光素子電流検知回路を備える発光装置。
  5.  請求項1または2記載の発光装置であって、
     前記順逆反転回路は、電源間に直列接続され、その直列接続点が前記単数または複数の発光素子の一端に接続される第1および第2のスイッチング素子と、
     前記電源間に直列接続され、その直列接続点が前記単数または複数の発光素子の他端に接続される第3および第4のスイッチング素子とを有し、
     前記第2および第3のスイッチング素子が導通して異常を検知した発光素子に逆方向電圧を印加してリフレッシュし、前記第1および第4のスイッチング素子が導通してリフレッシュした発光素子に順方向電圧を印加する発光装置。
