Definitions
- the present invention relates to the field of internal combustion engines and more particularly that of gas turbine engines as used in aeronautics, particularly on helicopters. It is aimed at treating the intake air of such engines.
- a helicopter may have to evolve in an environment heavily loaded with free particles, sand or dust, for example. When it is close to the ground, at takeoff or landing, it raises and suspends in the air a large amount of particles that are ingested by the engines. Engines have their performance impaired and they undergo significant corrosion by the particles that pass through them.
- a known anti-sand filter is of the vortex type. It comprises a parallelepipedal or annular enclosure in which are arranged tubular filter elements passing through a wall of the enclosure to the other, in which the air is set in vortex motion.
- a first output, axial, is in communication with the intake channel of the engine and a second outlet, lateral, opens into the enclosure. The interior of this enclosure is ventilated to ensure the evacuation of the particulate charged air towards the outside.
- the so-called secondary ventilation is provided by a device for driving the air charged with particles, which flow can represent up to 10% of the flow of the machine.
- Known devices include a fan driven by an electric motor, the collection of electrical energy being performed at the engine itself or the helicopter.
- the sampling requires cutting, control and protection systems. So, although very flexible because it allows to manage the sampling according to the needs and phases of flight, this device is relatively heavy installation and binding from the point of view of wiring and electrical control.
- Another known solution is to provide ventilation by means of an ejector via a venturi. The flow necessary for the operation of the ejector is taken from a high-pressure stage of the engine. This system has the advantage of high reliability and relatively low mass. However, the high-pressure stage sampling is very expensive in terms of performance and reduces the engine's flight envelope.
- the applicant has set a goal of achieving the ventilation rate of the vortex filtering system by a means not having the disadvantages of the prior art.
- the objective is also to provide a ventilation device having a better compromise with respect to the prior art, between its mass, its impact on engine performance, its cost and its repairability.
- an air filtering device at the input of an internal combustion engine comprising at least one filter element with an air inlet to be treated, a first purified air outlet to the engine and a second air outlet to the outside, a ventilation means ensuring the entrainment of air from said second air outlet, characterized in that the ventilation means comprises a fan wheel driven by a turbine set in motion by a gas flow taken from the engine, the turbine and the fan wheel being arranged concentrically relative to each other.
- the pressure level of the gas stream may be that of an intermediate level of compression or that of a lower turbine stage.
- the fins forming the turbine are arranged radially outside a ring connecting the outer ends of the fins of the fan.
- the turbine is of the action type.
- the fan wheel and the turbine form a rotor mounted in a housing in which are formed a central ventilation air channel and a channel in the form of at least one ring sector of feeding the turbine.
- the fan wheel and the turbine form a rotor at the end of a central shaft mounted in an ogive of said casing.
- the gas sampling can be carried out, preferably, either at the compressor or between the power turbine and the high pressure turbine or between the stages of the power turbine.
- FIG. 1 schematically shows a vortex filtering device mounted at the air intake of a gas turbine engine
- FIG. 2 shows a filter element of the device of FIG. 1
- FIG. 3 shows, in axial section, an embodiment according to the invention
- FIG. 4 is a view according to section A-A of FIG.
- FIG. 1 shows an example of a gas turbine engine successively along its main axis XX, a compression section 2 of the air admitted by the admission channel 6, a combustion chamber 3 and a turbine section 4.
- the motor can be single or multi body with a low pressure body and a high pressure body.
- the compression section may comprise one or more axial stages and / or one or more centrifugal stages.
- the turbine section may comprise one or more stages in lines connected by a central shaft to a corresponding compression stage.
- the turbine section may comprise a free turbine connected to a power take-off shaft.
- An anti-sand filter 8 is mounted across the air intake duct 6.
- the filter may have a parallelepipedal or annular shape depending on the shape of the input channel.
- the filter 8 comprises two walls, 8A and 8B, spaced apart from each other.
- the air enters through openings in the upstream wall 8A and spring, purified particles which it is possibly loaded, through the orifices of the downstream wall 8B. Downstream and upstream are defined with respect to the flow of air through the engine.
- filter elements 80 are arranged between the two walls, opening into the openings of the walls 8A and 8B.
- Figure 2 shows the operating principle of these elements.
- An element 80 comprises a tube 81 open on an orifice of the wall 8A. It is provided with fins 82 capable of imposing a vortex movement to the incoming air through an opening 8A1 of the wall 8A.
- the tube 81 On the side of the wall 8B the tube 81 provides an annular opening here with a truncated cone tube 82. The latter opens onto an opening in the downstream wall 8B. In operation, the air having passed through the wall 8A and set in motion swirling in the upstream portion of the tube 81.
- the particles whose air is optionally charged are centrifuged along the inner face of the wall of the tube 81 and are evacuated with the flow S2 in the space between the tubes 81 and the walls 8A and 8B.
- the air flow SI unpolluted, enters the tube 82 and is evacuated through the wall 8B. It is admitted in channel 6 to be guided to the compression section.
- a fan 10 draws air inside the enclosure of the filter 8 and rejects it.
- the ventilation module 10 is shown in axial section in FIG. It comprises a fan wheel 20 rotatably mounted in a casing 30.
- the wheel comprises a hub 21 extending on one side by a central shaft 22.
- On the hub 21 are radially fixed fan blades 23, shaped to be traversed axially by the air, parallel to the axis of the central shaft 22.
- On the periphery of this wheel formed by the fan blades 23 are arranged radially turbine blades 24 with axial flow.
- a ring 25 separates the flow of ventilation air from the gas stream passing through the turbine blades in the axial direction.
- the wheel can advantageously be made in one piece by machining a single block.
- the central shaft 22 is rotatably mounted cantilevered in a nose 31 of the casing 30.
- the casing comprises a first cylindrical casing 33, defining a first annular channel, for an axial air flow F1, with the ogive 31.
- Guide fins 34 radially connect the surface of the ogive 31 to the casing 33.
- the vein for the flow Fl has an opening corresponding to that of the vein traversed by the fins 23 of the fan.
- the envelope is extended downstream by the flow separation ring 25.
- the housing defines, externally to the casing 33, a second channel concentric with the first channel with two wall elements 35 and 36.
- the wall 35 forms, seen in axial section, a radial inlet bend and which is connected tangentially with the wall cylindrical.
- the wall 36 spaced radially from the wall 35 also forms a radial-to-radial bend which is tangentially connected to a cylindrical wall 37 of radius greater than that of the cylindrical wall 33.
- This second channel is thus radially inlet and axial outlet.
- the second channel for the gas flow F2 is in the form of ring sector or annular.
- the cylindrical wall forms a sealing ring surrounding the rotor 1. More particularly, it forms a sealing ring for the turbine blades 24 with the top of which it provides a minimum clearance.
- FIG. 4 shows in section along AA in FIG. 3 the shape of turbine blades 24 as well as that of guide vanes 38 forming injectors.
- Flanges 33A upstream allow mounting of the device to a conduit from the sand filter.
- Flanges 35A and 36A allow mounting to a conduit communicating with a sample on the engine, and flanges 37A allow connection to a vent.
- the ventilation device 10 receives the gases F2, taken from the engine, which are guided by the second channel to the turbine blades 24 they set in motion and drive the ventilation wheel. By its rotation the ventilation fins 23 suck the air Fl from the inside of the filter 8. The two flows Fl and F2 are united downstream of the wheel 20 and directed outwards.
- the device of the invention allows its architecture to have a removable wheel easily, thereby simplifying maintenance procedures, to achieve a machine with a small number of parts. For example the replacement of the rotor 21 is easily performed from the rear.
