Abstract

This invention is related to electric machines - engines and generators. The operation principle of the proposed electric machine design is based on properties of moving conductor in a magnetic field (in generator mode) or on the properties of Ampere's force (in motor mode). On the basis of these properties, three related designs of reciprocal motor or generator are proposed: longitudinal, annular and arch-shaped. The proposed reciprocal electric power generator or motor contains pairs of permanent magnets. Each magnet pair is connected by the same magnetic pole to a ferromagnetic core thus producing the magnetic field of a desired specific shape and amplifying it by the factor of 'm'. Such connection of the magnets can be of longitudinal, annular or other shape. The windings mounted on the magnetic core should be able to move relatively to the magnetic core, or the core, relatively to the windings. The generator operates very efficiently (in generation mode) and produces substantial amounts of electric power, despite its relatively small dimensions and inexpensive design.

Description

RECIPROCAL (LONGITUDINAL MOTION) ELECTRIC POWER GENERATOR OR MOTOR Technical Field
This invention is related to electric machines - motors and generators.
Background Art
Traditional electric machines are based on electromagnetic induction or interaction between electric currents and magnetic fields. Any electric machine containing permanent magnets can operate as an electric power generator or an electric motor.
A similar invention is described in the US patent No.US5347186 (A). The said generator contains two magnets in the cylinders and the windings that are mounted next to the magnets; the magnets change the magnetic field when moving relatively to each other and thus produce induction. Such generator could be successfully deployed in the fields of signalling and automation.
Presently, the need to capture the power of waves as an alternative or even the primary energy source for mankind becomes ever more urgent (important). The proposed electric power generator or motor fits the requirements for conversion of wave oscillations into electric energy. However, the field of application is not limited to wave power generation.
Technical Problem
Technical Solution
The operation principle of the proposed design of the electric machine is based on conductor motion properties in a magnetic field (when operating as a generator) or on the properties of Ampère's force (when operating as a motor), tough it also could be explained on the basis of magnetic flux alteration inside the windings. On the basis of these properties, several related designs for the motor or the generator are proposed: longitudinal, annular or of an arbitrary shape.
The proposed new reciprocal electric power generator or motor has one or multiple pairs of magnets and ferromagnetic cores between them. The magnets of each pair are connected by the same poles to a ferromagnetic core, thus producing magnetic field of specific shape and amplifying it by the factor of 'm'. The connection of the magnets can be longitudinal, annular or of arbitrary shape. The windings mounted on the magnetic core should be able to move relatively to the magnetic core, or the core, relatively to the windings. When electric current flows though the windings (operation in motor mode), interaction between the electric current and the magnetic field creates Ampère's force, the vector lines of which take longitudinal or other shape, depending on the shape of the core. When the winding and the core move relatively to each other, the movement of conductor in the magnetic field produces an electromotive force (operation in generation mode). This type of generator is characterized by high efficiency.
The reciprocal electric power generator or motor may contain a magnetic screen - magnetic circuit that not only protects environment from magnetic fields, but also significantly increases efficiency of electric power generator or motor.
Advantageous Effects
Description of Drawings
The appended drawings illustrate the following:
Fig. 1 - The shape of generator or motor core and of magnetic field in longitudinal generator or motor design.
Fig. 2 - Design of generator or motor containing a core and a winding.
Fig. 3 - Design of generator or motor containing multiple windings - multiple phases.
Fig. 4 - Generator or motor of annular design.
Fig. 5 - Generator or motor containing a magnetic screen- a magnetic circuit.
Fig. 6 - Generator or motor of arch-shaped design.
Best Mode
The proposed design of reciprocal electric power generator or motor converts mechanical movement into electric power or, vice versa, electric power into mechanical movement. The principle of operation is illustrated in Fig.1 and Fig.2. Fig. 1 demonstrates how magnets 1 and ferromagnetic core 2 form the magnetic field. Fig.2 illustrates the position of winding in the magnetic field. When electric current flows through the winding 4, it interacts with the magnetic field created by the magnets 1 and the core 2.
Ampère 's force created by interaction between the winding and the magnetic field generates movement that depends on the shape of the core.
Fig. 3 presents a multi-polar/multi-phase generator or motor. Fig 4. presents annular version of the design. Fig.5. presents the version containing a magnetic screen 5. The magnetic screen 5 serves three purposes:
  1. Connection of magnetic fields of adjacent magnets and amplification thereof by the factor of 'm'. Thus the windings are traversed by the amplified magnetic field that cannot dissipate in the environment.
  2. Protection of environment from alternating magnetic fields created by moving magnets;
  3. Forcing the magnetic flux to traverse the windings at the right angle.
The reciprocal electric power generator or motor operates even without the magnetic screen.
The motive force of the reciprocal electric power generator or motor may be increased without increasing consumption of electric power. Since the Ampère's force (FA=I·L·B·sin α) is directly proportional to the strength of magnetic field, the length of the conductor and the electric current, the motion force could be increased by increasing the length of the conductor or the magnet parameters (magnetization or dimensions), without increasing the electric current.
Laboratory research demonstrated that movements of the electric power generator or motor (operation in motor mode) automatically stabilize, since a conductor moving in a magnetic field generates electric current of the same polarity as that of the power supply voltage.
The operation of the reciprocal electric power generator or motor as a power generator is based on the properties of conductor movement in permanent magnetic field.
Both mechanical and electronic collectors-commutators can be used in the reciprocal electric power generator or motor. When operating in power generation mode, the collectors may be absent. The number of windings is not specific and depends on requirements. Therefore it does not constitute a basis for another patent.
The proposed electric machine (reciprocal electric generator or motor) is characterized by:
  1. Substantial material economy, since the amount of ferrous metals in the device is significantly reduced (ferrous metals in rotors and stators of modern motors and generators make the major part of their mass);
  2. Electric energy is not used for remagnetization of magnetic circuits and magnetic core (motor mode) leading to economy of electric energy;
  3. The device is very quiet. All modern generators operate under varying load conditions leading to increased vibration and higher noise levels. The proposed device is free of this shortcoming.
  4. The electric machine operates well as generator in the range of relatively low speeds, which makes it very useful. This generator suits well for construction of wave power farms, where mechanical movements are slow. It is ideally suited for mounting on a ship, i.e., for power generation from wobbling movement of a ship, raft or another floating body.
