Description

안전성이 향상된 전지모듈
본 발명은 안전성이 향상된 전지모듈에 관한 것으로, 더욱 상세하게는, 전극단자들이 상단 및 하단에 각각 형성되어 있는 판상형 전지셀들을 포함하고 있는 전지모듈로서, 전지셀들; 상기 전지셀들의 유동을 억제하고 전지셀의 충방전시 부피 변화를 완충할 수 있도록, 전지셀들의 계면에 개재되어 있는 완충부재; 및 상기 전극단자 부위를 제외하고 전지셀 적층체의 외면 전체를 감싸도록 상호 결합되며, 판재로 이루어진 한 쌍의 모듈 하우징;을 포함하는 전지모듈에 관한 것이다.
최근, 충방전이 가능한 이차전지는 와이어리스 모바일 기기의 에너지원으로 광범위하게 사용되고 있다. 또한, 이차전지는 화석 연료를 사용하는 기존의 가솔린 차량, 디젤 차량 등의 대기오염 등을 해결하기 위한 방안으로 제시되고 있는 전기자동차(EV), 하이브리드 전기자동차(HEV) 등의 동력원으로서도 주목받고 있다.
소형 모바일 기기들에는 디바이스 1 대당 하나 또는 두서너 개의 전지셀들이 사용됨에 반하여, 자동차 등과 같은 중대형 디바이스에는 고출력 대용량의 필요성으로 인해, 다수의 전지셀을 전기적으로 연결한 중대형 전지모듈이 사용된다.
중대형 전지모듈은 가능하면 작은 크기와 중량으로 제조되는 것이 바람직하므로, 높은 집적도로 충적될 수 있고 용량 대비 중량이 작은 각형 전지, 파우치형 전지 등이 중대형 전지모듈의 전지셀로서 주로 사용되고 있다. 특히, 알루미늄 라미네이트 시트 등을 외장부재로 사용하는 파우치형 전지는 중량이 작고 제조비용이 낮다는 등의 잇점으로 인해 최근 많은 관심을 모으고 있다.
도 1에는 종래의 대표적인 파우치형 전지의 사시도가 모식적으로 도시되어 있다. 도 1의 파우치형 전지(100)는 두 개의 전극리드(110, 120)가 서로 대향하여 전지 본체(130)의 상단부와 하단부에 각각 돌출되어 있는 구조로 이루어져 있다.
외장부재(140)는 상하 2 단위로 이루어져 있고, 그것의 내면에 형성되어 있는 수납부에 전극조립체(도시하지 않음)를 장착한 상태로 상호 접촉 부위인 양측면(140a)과 상단부 및 하단부(140b, 140c)를 부착시킴으로써 전지(100)가 만들어진다. 이러한 외장부재(140)는 수지층/금속박층/수지층의 라미네이트 구조로 이루어져 있어서, 서로 접하는 양측면(140a)과 상단부 및 하단부(140b, 140c)에 열과 압력을 가하여 수지층을 상호 융착시킴으로써 부착시킬 수 있으며, 경우에 따라서는 접착제를 사용하여 부착할 수도 있다.
양측면(140a)은 상하 외장부재(140)의 동일한 수지층이 직접 접하므로 용융에 의해 균일한 밀봉이 가능하다. 반면에, 상단부(140b)와 하단부(140c)에는 전극리드(110, 120)가 돌출되어 있으므로, 전극리드(110, 120)의 두께 및 외장부재(140) 소재와의 이질성을 고려하여 밀봉성을 높일 수 있도록 전극리드(110, 120)와의 사이에 필름상의 실링부재(160)를 개재한 상태에서 열융착시킨다.
그러나, 외장부재(140) 자체의 기계적 강성이 우수하지 못하므로, 안정한 구조의 전지모듈을 제조하기 위하여, 일반적으로 전지셀들(단위전지들)을 카트리지 등의 팩 케이스에 장착하여 전지모듈을 제조하고 있다. 그러나, 중대형 전지모듈이 장착되는 장치 또는 차량 등에는 일반적으로 장착공간이 한정적이므로, 카트리지와 같은 팩 케이스의 사용으로 인해 전지모듈의 크기가 커지는 경우에는 낮은 공간 활용도의 문제점이 초래된다. 또한, 전지셀의 낮은 기계적 강성은 충방전시 전지셀의 반복적인 팽창 및 수축으로 나타나고, 그로 인해 열융착 부위가 분리되는 경우도 초래된다.
상기와 같은 파우치형 전지셀의 안전성을 확보하기 위하여 전지셀의 외면을 덮는 모듈 하우징에 대한 기술이 일부 알려져 있다.
예를 들어, 일본 특허출원공개 제2005-108693호에는 판상형의 라미네이트 전지셀의 양면을 동일 탄성을 가지며 쌍을 이루고 있는 탄성부에 의해 협지되는 모듈 하우징에 관한 기술이 개시되어 있다.
상기 기술은 오목하게 휘어진 형태의 모듈 하우징을 사용하여 전지셀의 양면을 탄성으로 압박하는 구조를 제시하고 있으나, 전지셀의 외면에 그러한 모듈 하우징을 별도로 장착함으로 인해 전체적인 체적 증가가 불가피하다는 문제점을 가지고 있다. 또한, 상기와 같은 구조의 모듈 하우징에 전지셀을 삽입하여야 하므로 조립 과정이 용이하지 않아 양산 공정에의 적용에 한계가 있다. 즉, 모듈 하우징에 전지셀을 무리하게 삽입할 경우 과도한 하중이 가해져 전지셀이 파손될 우려가 있다.
한편, 충방전시 전지셀(이차전지)의 두께가 변화되고, 이로 인해 전지셀들 사이에서 공극이 발생하여, 외부 충격 및 진동시에 전지셀들이 원위치에서 고정되어 있지 못하는 경우가 발생한다. 또한, 전지셀들이 직접 접하는 구조에서, 전지케이스 상호 간의 낮은 마찰력으로 인해 미끄러지 쉬우며, 결과적으로, 전지셀들이 움직일 수 있다.
이와 같이, 다양한 원인들에 의해 전지셀들이 원위치에 고정되지 못하고 유동되는 경우에는, 전극단자 연결부위가 파괴되거나 단락이 유발될 수 있으므로, 전지모듈의 안전성과 작동 효율성에 크게 문제가 된다.
따라서, 보다 콤팩트하고 외부 충격에 유연하며 안정성 및 안전성이 우수한 전지모듈에 대한 필요성이 높은 실정이다.
본 발명은 상기와 같은 종래기술의 문제점과 과거로부터 요청되어온 기술적 과제를 해결하는 것을 목적으로 한다.
본 발명의 목적은 전지셀의 낮은 기계적 강성을 효과적으로 보강하면서 전지셀들의 유동을 억제하고 전지셀의 충방전시 부피 변화를 완충할 수 있는 전지모듈을 제공하는 것이다.
이러한 목적을 달성하기 위한 본 발명에 따른 전지모듈은,
전극단자들이 상단 및 하단에 각각 형성되어 있는 판상형 전지셀들을 포함하고 있는 전지모듈로서, 둘 또는 그 이상의 전지셀들;
상기 전지셀들의 유동을 억제하고 전지셀의 충방전시 부피 변화를 완충할 수 있도록, 전지셀들의 계면에 개재되어 있는 완충부재; 및
상기 전극단자 부위를 제외하고 전지셀 적층체의 외면 전체를 감싸도록 상호 결합되며, 판재로 이루어진 한 쌍의 모듈 하우징;
을 포함하는 것으로 구성되어 있다.
본 발명에 따른 전지모듈에서 완충부재는 충방전시의 반복적인 팽창 및 수축의 변화에 의해 발생하는 부피변화를 완충해 주고, 전지셀들 사이의 마찰력을 높여서 전지셀들이 유동되는 것을 억제하는 작용을 한다.
또한, 상기 모듈 하우징은 기계적 강성이 낮은 전지셀을 보호하면서 충방전시의 반복적인 팽창 및 수축의 변화를 억제함으로써, 전지셀 내부의 저항 증가를 억제하고 전지셀의 실링부위가 분리되는 것을 방지하여, 작동 및 수명 특성과 안전성을 향상시켜 준다.
상기 판상형 전지셀은 전지모듈의 구성을 위해 충적되었을 때 전체 크기를 최소화할 수 있도록 얇은 두께와 상대적으로 넓은 폭 및 길이를 가진 이차전지이다. 그러한 바람직한 예로는 수지층과 금속층을 포함하는 라미네이트 시트의 전지케이스에 전극조립체가 내장되어 있고 상하 양단부에 전극단자가 돌출되어 있는 구조의 이차전지를 들 수 있으며, 구체적으로, 알루미늄 라미네이트 시트의 파우치형 케이스에 전극조립체가 내장되어 있는 구조일 수 있다. 이러한 구조의 이차전지를 파우치형 전지셀로 칭하기도 한다.
전지셀들의 계면에 개재되는 완충부재는 전지셀들의 부피변화를 완충하고 전지셀들 사이의 마찰력을 높여서 전지셀들의 유동을 억제할 수 있는 소재라면 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니며, 바람직하게는 다공성 구조의 고분자 수지일 수 있다. 이러한 다공성 구조는 개방형 기공을 포함하는 형태와 폐쇄형 기공을 포함하는 형태가 모두 가능하다.
상기 고분자 수지의 종류는 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니며, 예를 들어, 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌, 폴리부틸렌, 폴리스티렌, 천연 고무, 인조 고무, NBR 수지, ABS 수지 등이 모두 가능하다.
상기 모듈 하우징은 바람직하게는 전지셀 적층체의 외면 형상에 대응하는 내면 구조를 가지고 있으며, 특히 별도의 체결 부재를 필요로 하지 않는 조립 체결방식으로 결합되는 구조로 이루어져 있다. 이러한 모듈 하우징에서 단면 결합부의 대표적인 예로는, 모듈 하우징들이 서로 대면하도록 접촉시킨 상태로 가압하였을 때 탄력적인 결합에 의해 맞물릴 수 있도록, 암수 체결구조로 이루어질 수 있다.
한편, 이차전지의 경우 충방전 과정에서 발열이 일어나게 되며, 발생한 열을 외부로 효과적으로 방출시키는 것이 전지의 수명을 연장시키는데 중요한 요소로 작용하게 된다. 따라서, 상기 모듈 하우징은 내부의 전지셀에서 발생하는 열이 외부로 방출되는 것이 더욱 용이할 수 있도록 높은 열전도성의 금속 판재로 이루어질 수 있다.
하나의 바람직한 예에서, 상기 모듈 하우징의 상단과 하단에 인접한 측면에는 전지셀의 고정을 용이하게 하기 위해 소정 크기의 단차가 형성되어 있으며, 경우에 따라서는 상기 단차가 금속 하우징의 좌우 양단에 인접한 측면에 형성될 수도 있다. 더욱 바람직하게는, 금속 하우징의 상하단과 좌우 양단 모두에 단차가 형성됨으로써, 전지셀의 고정을 더욱 확실하게 할 수 있다.
상기 모듈 하우징의 상단과 하단에 전지셀을 고정되는 형태는 다양할 수 있으며, 더욱 효율적인 장착을 위해, 바람직하게는 만입형 단차가 전지셀의 실링부에 대응하는 형상과 크기로 만입되어 있을 수 있다.
이러한 모듈 하우징의 단차 및 완충부재의 조합에 의해, 전지셀들의 유동 억제를 극대화할 수 있다.
하나의 바람직한 예에서, 본 발명의 모듈 하우징의 외면에는 냉매의 유동 공간을 제공할 수 있도록, 폭 방향(횡 방향)으로 서로 이격되어 있는 다수의 선형 비드들이 그것의 외면에 형성되어 있는 구조로 이루어질 수 있다. 상기 구조에서, 비드부들은 그것의 양 단부가 모듈 하우징에 대응 단부에 도달하는 크기를 가질 수 있다. 이로 인해, 전지모듈이 적층된 상태에서 모듈 하우징의 폭 방향으로 냉매(예를 들어, 공기)가 유동할 수 있어서, 냉각효율이 더욱 향상될 수 있다.
또한, 상기 모듈 하우징의 외면에서 상단면과 하단면에는 바람직하게는 폭 방향(횡 방향)으로 상호 반대되는 형상의 바가 각각 형성되어 있으며, 이러한 바의 형상은 적층시 인접하는 전지모듈과 상호 대응되는 형상을 갖고 있어서 전지모듈 간에 적층되는 위치가 뒤바뀌거나 또는 어긋나는 것을 방지하는 효과가 있다.
본 발명은 또한 상기 전지모듈을 단위체로 사용하여 제조되는 중대형 전지팩을 제공한다.
중대형 전지팩은 고출력 대용량의 전기를 공급할 수 있도록 다수의 이차전지들을 전기적 및 기계적으로 연결하여 제조된다. 예를 들어, 중대형 전지팩은 둘 또는 그 이상의 상기 전지모듈들의 적층체를 측면 방향으로 세워 팩 프레임에 장착함으로써 제조할 수 있다.
본 발명은 또한, 상기 전지팩을 전원으로 포함하는 차량을 제공한다.
특히, 상기 구조의 차량은 소망하는 출력 및 용량에 따라 장착 효율성, 구조적 안정성 등을 고려할 때, 전기자동차, 하이브리드 전기자동차, 플러그-인 하이브리드 전기자동차로 사용될 수 있다.

도 2는 본 발명의 하나의 실시예에 따른 전지모듈의 분해 사시도가 모식적으로 도시되어 있다.
도 2를 참조하면, 전극단자들(110, 120)이 상단 및 하단에 각각 형성되어 있는 판상형 전지셀들(100)을 포함하고 있는 전지모듈(400)은, 두 개의 전지셀(100)들의 계면에 완충부재(300)가 개재되어 있고, 한 쌍의 모듈 하우징(200)으로 결합되어 있다.
완충부재(300)는 다공성 구조의 고분자 수지로 이루어져 있어서, 충방전시의 반복적인 팽창 및 수축의 변화에 의해 발생하는 부피변화를 완충해주고, 전지셀들 사이의 마찰력을 높여서 전지셀들의 유동 억제를 보완해 준다.
모듈 하우징(200)은 전극단자(110, 120) 부위를 제외하고 전지셀(100) 적층체의 외면 전체를 감싸도록 상호 결합되어 있는 한 쌍의 모듈 하우징(200)으로 이루어져 있는 바, 모듈 하우징(200)은 기계적 강성이 낮은 전지셀을 보호하면서 충방전시의 반복적인 팽창 및 수축의 변화를 억제하여 전지셀의 실링부위가 분리되는 것을 방지하여 준다.
도 3은 도 2의 모듈 하우징의 사시도가 모식적으로 도시되어 있다. 도 3을 도 2와 함께 참조하면, 모듈 하우징(200)의 좌우 양단에 인접한 측면에는 모듈의 고정을 용이하게 하기 위한 단차(240)가 형성되어 있다. 또한, 모듈 하우징(200)의 외면에는 폭 방향으로 서로 이격되어 있는 다수의 선형 비드들(233)이 형성되어 있으며, 이러한 비드들(233)은 그것의 양 단부가 모듈 하우징에 대응 단부에 도달하는 크기를 가지고 있어서, 전지모듈이 적층된 상태에서 모듈 하우징의 폭 방향으로 냉매(예를 들어, 공기)가 유동할 수 있으므로, 냉각효율이 더욱 향상될 수 있다.
또한, 모듈 하우징(200)의 외면에서 상단면과 하단면에는 폭 방향(횡 방향)으로 상호 반대되는 형상의 바(235)가 각각 형성되어 있어서, 적층시 인접하는 전지모듈과 상호 대응되는 형상을 갖으므로 전지모듈 간에 적층되는 위치가 뒤바뀌거나 또는 어긋나는 것을 방지할 수 있다.
또한, 모듈 하우징(200)은 한 쌍의 좌측 하우징(211)과 우측 하우징(212)으로 이루어져 있으며, 별도의 체결 부재를 사용하지 않고 상호 결합되는 구조일 수 있다.
모듈 하우징(200)의 구체적인 결합구조는 도 4를 통해 확인할 수 있다. 도 4에는 모듈 하우징(200)의 단면도와 부분 확대도가 도시되어 있다. 도 4를 참조하면, 모듈 하우징들(211, 212)이 서로 대면하도록 접촉시킨 상태로 가압하였을 때 탄력적인 결합에 의해 맞물릴 수 있도록, 암수 체결구조(221, 222)로 이루어져 있다.
즉, 체결구조의 형태는 육면체 체결구조(221a, 222a) 및 원기둥 체결구조(221b, 222b) 등으로 다양할 수 있으며, 체결 과정에서 서로 맞물리면서 결합력을 증가시킨다.
따라서, 모듈 하우징(200)의 조립을 위해서 별도의 결합 부재 내지 가공 공정을 거칠 필요 없이 강력한 기계적 결합이 가능하며, 그러한 간편한 결합 방식은 양산 공정에의 적용에 특히 바람직하다.
도 5에는 단위 전지모듈(400)이 적층되어 있는 중대형 전지팩(500) 의 사시도가 도시되어 있다. 본 발명에 따른 4 개의 단위 전지모듈들(400)이 하나의 중대형 전지모듈(500)을 이루고 있으며, 전체적으로 8개의 전지셀(100)이 포함되어 있다. 즉, 4개의 단위 전지모듈들의 적층체를 측면 방향으로 세워 팩 프레임(510, 520)에 장착하여 중대형 전지팩(500)을 제조한다.
이러한 전지팩(500)을 다수 개 연결하면 더욱 큰 출력과 용량의 중대형 전지시스템을 제조할 수 있다.
이상 본 발명의 실시예에 따른 전지모듈의 도면을 참조하여 설명하였지만, 본 발명이 속한 분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자라면 상기 내용을 바탕으로 본 발명의 범주내에서 다양한 응용 및 변형을 행하는 것이 가능할 것이다.
이상에서 설명한 바와 같이, 본 발명에 따른 전지모듈은 모듈 하우징에 의해 전지셀의 낮은 강성을 보강하고, 완충부재로 인해 전지셀들의 유동을 억제하고 전지셀의 충방전시 부피 변화를 완충할 수 있어서, 전지의 작동 내지 수명 특성을 향상시키고 외력에 대해 전지모듈의 안정성 및 안전성을 담보한다.

Claims (16)

  1. 전극단자들이 상단 및 하단에 각각 형성되어 있는 판상형 전지셀들을 포함하고 있는 전지모듈로서,
    둘 또는 그 이상의 전지셀들;
    상기 전지셀들의 유동을 억제하고 전지셀의 충방전시 부피 변화를 완충할 수 있도록, 전지셀들의 계면에 개재되어 있는 완충부재; 및
    상기 전극단자 부위를 제외하고 전지셀 적층체의 외면 전체를 감싸도록 상호 결합되며, 판재로 이루어진 한 쌍의 모듈 하우징;
    을 포함하는 것으로 구성된 전지모듈.
  2. 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 판상형 전지셀은 금속층과 수지층을 포함하는 라미네이트 시트의 케이스에 전지셀을 내장한 후 외주면을 실링한 구조로 이루어진 것을 특징으로 하는 전지모듈.
  3. 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 완충부재는 다공성 구조의 고분자 수지로 이루어진 것을 특징으로 하는 전지모듈.
  4. 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 완충부재는 개방형 기공 또는 폐쇄형 기공을 포함하는 다공성 구조로 이루어진 것을 특징으로 하는 전지모듈.
  5. 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 모듈 하우징은 전지셀 적층체의 외면 형상에 대응하는 내면 구조를 가지고 있으며, 조립 체결방식으로 결합되는 것을 특징으로 하는 전지모듈.
  6. 제 5 항에 있어서, 상기 모듈 하우징의 단면 결합부는, 모듈 하우징들이 서로 대면하도록 접촉시킨 상태로 가압하였을 때 탄력적인 결합에 의해 맞물릴 수 있도록, 암수 체결구조로 이루어진 것을 특징으로 하는 전지모듈.
  7. 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 모듈 하우징은 금속 판재로 이루어진 것을 특징으로 하는 전지모듈.
  8. 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 모듈 하우징의 상단과 하단에 인접한 측면에는 전지셀을 고정하기 위한 소정 크기의 만입형 단차가 형성되어 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 전지모듈.
  9. 제 8 항에 있어서, 상기 만입형 단차는 전지셀의 실링부에 대응하는 형상과 크기로 만입되어 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 전지모듈.
  10. 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 모듈 하우징의 외면에는 냉매의 유동 공간을 제공할 수 있도록 폭 방향(횡 방향)으로 서로 이격되어 있는 다수의 선형 비드들이 형성되어 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 전지모듈.
  11. 제 10 항에 있어서, 상기 비드부들은 그것의 양 단부가 모듈 하우징의 대응 단부에 도달하는 크기를 가진 것을 특징으로 하는 전지모듈.
  12. 제 10 항에 있어서, 상기 모듈 하우징의 외면에서 상단면과 하단면에는 폭 방향(횡 방향)으로 상호 반대되는 형상의 바가 각각 형성되어 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 전지모듈.
  13. 제 1 항 내지 제 12 항 중 어느 하나에 따른 전지모듈을 단위체로 둘 이상 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 전지팩.
  14. 제 13 항에 있어서, 상기 둘 또는 그 이상의 전지모듈들의 적층체를 측면 방향으로 세워 팩 프레임에 장착하는 것을 특징으로 하는 전지팩.
  15. 제 13 항에 따른 전지팩을 전원으로 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 차량.
  16. 제 15 항에 있어서, 상기 차량은 전기자동차, 하이브리드 전기자동차, 또는 플러그-인 하이브리드 전기자동차인 것을 특징으로 하는 차량.
