Description

燃料電池
 本発明は、燃料電池に関する。
 一般に、燃料電池は、図11に示すような単セル(燃料電池セル)12を複数積層したスタック構造を有する(特許文献1参照)。各単セル12が備える一対のフレーム13,14同士の接合部には膜電極接合体(MEA)15が装着されている。膜電極接合体15は、イオン交換膜からなる固体高分子電解質膜16と、アノード側に位置する電極触媒層17と、カソード側に位置する電極触媒層18とを備えている。固体高分子電解質膜16の外周縁は、前記両フレーム13,14により挟着されている。
 前記電極触媒層17の表面にはアノード側のガス拡散層19が積層され、前記電極触媒層18の表面にはカソード側のガス拡散層20が積層されている。さらに、ガス拡散層19の表面にはアノード側の第1ガス流路形成体21が積層され、前記ガス拡散層20の表面には、カソード側の第2ガス流路形成体22が積層されている。前記第1ガス流路形成体21の表面には平板状のセパレータ23が接合され、第2ガス流路形成体22の表面には平板状のセパレータ24が接合されている。
 第1ガス流路形成体21と第2ガス流路形成体22は同じ構成である。そのため、以下では第2ガス流路形成体22の構成について説明する。ただし、図11及び図12中、第1ガス流路形成体21の構成において第2ガス流路形成体22の構成と同一部分には、同一符号を付す。
 第2ガス流路形成体22は平板材25を含み、その平板材25における多数の箇所には、複数の第1突部26a及び第2突部26bが切り起こし成形されている。第1突部26a及び第2突部26bは、ガス流路を形成するための突部であり、ガス拡散層20側に突出するように切り起こし成形されている。
 第2突部26bは複数列に形成されており、同じ列に並んだ一対の第2突部26bの間の間隙に隣接して第1突部26aが配置されている。第1突部26a及び第2突部26bがガス拡散層20に接触することによって、平板材25とガス拡散層20との間に酸化剤ガスのガス流路となる複数の主流流路h1が形成されている。また、隣接する主流流路h1同士は、第1突部26a及び第2突部26b間に形成される副流流路h2により連通されている。
 前記平板材25には、第1及び第2突部26a,26bと対応するように、かつガスの流れ方向Pに関して上流側に位置するように、セパレータ24側に突出した複数の小さな第3突部27が成形されている。第3突部27は、水流路28を形成するための突部であり、図11及び図12に示すように前記セパレータ24側に突出するように押し出し成形されている。前記各第3突部27が前記セパレータ24に接触することによって、平板材25とセパレータ24との間に水流路28が形成されている。水流路28の深さは、例えば、10μm~50μmの範囲に設定されている。
 前記第1突部26a及び第2突部26bには、ガスの流れ方向Pと直交する方向Qに沿って第1及び第2突部26a,26bを貫通する連通孔29が形成されている。すなわち、連通孔29は、ガスの流れ方向Pから見て第1突部26aの左側と右側との二箇所及び第2突部26bの左側と右側との二箇所においてそれぞれ開口するように形成されている。該連通孔29によって、前記ガス流路と水流路28とが連通されている。水流路28は導水層となる。
 なお、第1ガス流路形成体21は、前述したように第2ガス流路形成体22と同様に構成されているが、第1ガス流路形成体21によって形成されたガス流路内を燃料ガスが流れる方向は、第2ガス流路形成体22によって形成されたガス流路内を酸化剤ガスが流れる方向とは、90°異なる。即ち、両者は直交する。
 上記のように構成された従来の燃料電池セルでは、発電の際、すなわち、燃料ガス(水素)及び酸化剤ガス(酸素)がアノード側及びカソード側にそれぞれ供給された際、水素と酸素の電気化学反応によって、カソード側の電極触媒層18及びガス拡散層20に水が生成する。また、発電効率を向上するため、燃料ガスと酸化剤ガスは加湿器によりそれぞれ加湿されてから単セル12に供給されている。
 カソード側で生成した水は、カソード側のガス拡散層20及びガス流路形成体22の主流流路h1に浸入する。また、カソード側で生成した水の一部は、前記膜電極接合体15を逆拡散(浸透)して、アノード側のガス拡散層19及びガス流路形成体21の主流流路h1に浸透水として浸入する。
 このように生成水及び浸透水が、アノード側及びカソード側のガス流路において、主流流路h1に排水され、それらの一部は、水流路28の毛管作用により、連通孔29を介して水流路28(導水層)に移動する。水流路28に進入した水は、ガスの流動圧力によって、下流側に移動されるようにしている。このように、第1ガス流路形成体21及び第2ガス流路形成体22は、多孔体から形成されるとともに導水層(水流路28)である液相分離多孔体流路を有する。

 上記のような液相分離多孔体流路を用いた燃料電池では、低負荷時では、生成水及び浸透水が少ないため、上記のように水が主流流路h1から導水層に移動することにより主流流路h1に留まらず、ガスを主流流路h1に多く流すことができる。
 しかし、高負荷時では、生成水及び浸透水が多くなるため、導水層から主流流路h1に水が溢れることがある。図13は、主流流路h1に溢れた水が、主流流路h1に滞留している状態を示す主流流路h1及び副流流路h2の模式図である。
 この場合、主流流路h1には多くの副流流路h2が連通しているため、滞留水Rがある主流流路h1を流れるガスは、滞留水Rがある部位を、副流流路h2を迂回路として迂回し他の主流流路h1に流れる。これは、滞留水Rのために主流流路h1の圧損が、迂回路となった副流流路h2における圧損の合計値よりも大きいためである。このため、滞留水Rはガスにより押し流されることなく、そのまま滞留し続ける問題があった。滞留水がそのまま滞留し続けると、滞留水Rがある主流流路h1の下流側においては、ガス拡散性が悪化するとともに、電流分布の均一化をすることができず、発電性能が悪化することになる。
 また、液相分離多孔体流路を持たない燃料電池では、図11に示す第1ガス流路形成体21、第2ガス流路形成体22を省略する代わりに、例えば、図14に示すようにセパレータ23、24が、ガスの流れ方向に延びる複数の溝流路mを備えて、溝流路mを区画する突条maが、膜電極接合体15の電極触媒層17、18に接するようにして配置されている。このような燃料電池の場合、図14に示すように、溝流路m内に滞留水Rがあると、燃料電池の高負荷時は、ガスが滞留水Rを下流へ押し流していくことができるが、低負荷時にはガスの圧力では滞留水を押し流すことができず、滞留が継続されてしまい、このため、ガス拡散性が悪化するとともに、電流分布の均一化をすることができず、発電性能が悪化することになる。
 本発明の目的は、高負荷時及び低負荷時にかかわらず、滞留水を除去して、ガス拡散性を向上できるとともに電流分布の均一化を図ることができ、その結果、発電性能を向上することができる燃料電池を提供することにある。
 上記問題点を解決するために、本発明の第1の態様では、スタックされた複数の単セルを有する燃料電池であって、各単セルは、膜電極接合体と、膜電極接合体を間に挟んで配置される一対のセパレータとを備え、前記膜電極接合体は、固体高分子電解質膜と、固体高分子電解質膜のアノード側の面及びカソード側の面にそれぞれ積層された電極触媒層と、各電極触媒層の外側面に積層されたガス拡散層とを備え、各単セルのガス拡散層のそれぞれの外側面にはガス流路形成体が積層されていて、これにより各単セルは燃料ガス用のガス流路及び酸化剤ガス用のガス流路を有しており、各単セルのガス流路形成体のうち少なくとも一方は、複数のガス流路と、隣接するガス流路の間にそれぞれ位置する導水路とを備え、各ガス流路とそれに隣接する導水路との間には、ガス流路内の水を導水路に導くための連通路が設けられており、その連通路がガス流路に比べて高い圧力損失を有することを特徴とする燃料電池が提供される。
 本発明の第2の態様では、前記第1の態様の燃料電池であって、前記連通路が毛管作用により前記ガス流路内の水を前記導水路に導くことを特徴とする燃料電池が提供される。
 本発明の第3の態様では、前記第1又は第2の態様の燃料電池であって、前記前記ガス流路が溝状であることを特徴とする燃料電池が提供される。
 本発明の第4の態様では、前記第1の態様乃至第3の態様のうちいずれか1つの燃料電池であって、各単セルのガス流路形成体のうち少なくとも一方は、ガス流路内をガスが流れる方向であるガス流方向の上流側の部分にはガス流方向に沿って所定間隔ごとに連通路が設けられている一方、ガス流方向の下流側の部分には連通路が設けられておらず、ガス流方向の下流側の連通路が設けられていないガス流路形成体の部分のガス流方向の長さは前記所定間隔の大きさよりも大きいことを特徴とする燃料電池が提供される。
 本発明の第5の態様では、前記第1の態様乃至第3の態様のうちいずれか1つの燃料電池であって、各単セルのガス流路形成体のうち少なくとも一方は、ガス流路内をガスが流れる方向であるガス流方向の下流側の部分が平坦に形成されるか或いは持ち上げて形成されることにより、同部分に対応する位置で少なくとも一部の連通路が互いに連通していることを特徴とする燃料電池が提供される。
 本発明の第6の態様では、前記第1の態様の燃料電池であって、前記ガス流路形成体が前記セパレータとそれぞれ一体に設けられ、各ガス流路形成体のガス流路及び導水路が前記膜電極接合体に面していることを特徴とする燃料電池が提供される。
 本発明の第7の態様では、前記第1の態様乃至第6の態様のうちいずれか1つの燃料電池であって、各ガス流路形成体のガス流路及び導水路が直線状に延びており、前記連通路が毛管作用により前記ガス流路内の水を前記導水路に導くことを特徴とする燃料電池が提供される。
 本発明の第1の態様によれば、高負荷時及び低負荷時にかかわらず、ガス拡散性を向上できるとともに電流分布の均一化を図ることができ、その結果、発電性能を向上することができる効果を奏する。
 本発明の第2の態様によれば、燃料電池の低負荷時においても、浸透水が連通路に触れると毛管作用により、連通路を介して、導水路に流入させることができるため、ガス流路には、浸透水の滞留を抑制することができる。
 本発明の第3の態様によれば、ガス流路は、溝状にすることにより、ガス流路を容易に形成できる。
 本発明の第4の態様及び第5の態様によれば、ガス流路にたとえ滞留水があったとしても、ガス流路の圧損に比べて導水路の圧損が十分に大きくなるために、ガス流路のガスが連通路を通じて導水路に流れ込むのを抑制することができる。
 本発明の第6の態様によれば、前記ガス流路形成体は、前記セパレータとそれぞれ一体に設けられ、前記ガス流路形成体の各ガス流路及び各導水路は、前記膜電極接合体に面していることにより、本発明の第1の態様の効果を容易に実現できる。
 本発明の第7の態様によれば、ガス流路及び導水路を直線状に形成することにより、ガス流路及び導水路を容易に形成できるとともに、燃料電池の低負荷時においても、浸透水が連通路に触れると毛管作用により、連通路を介して、導水路に流入させることができるため、ガス流路には、浸透水の滞留を抑制することができる。

 (第1実施形態)
 以下、本発明の燃料電池を具体化した第1実施形態について図1~図4(b)を参照して説明する。
 図1に示すように、第1実施形態の燃料電池11は、固体高分子型の燃料電池であり、積層された多数の単セル12と、図示しない冷却水流路とを備えるスタック構造を有している。
 単セル12は、四角枠状をなす合成ゴム等の合成樹脂製の第1,第2フレーム13,14内に、膜電極接合体15(MEA:Membrane-Electrode-Assembly)を備えている。第1フレーム13は、その内側に燃料ガスの流路空間13aを区画している。第2フレーム14は、その内側に酸化剤ガスの流路空間14aを区画している。
 前記膜電極接合体15は、両フレーム13,14間に配設されている。前記単セル12は、前記燃料ガスの流路空間13aに収容されたフェライト系SUS(ステンレス鋼)、チタン合金或いはカーボンよりなる第1ガス流路形成体31と、前記酸化剤ガスの流路空間14aに収容されたフェライト系SUS(ステンレス鋼)、チタン合金、カーボン、金鍍金を施したチタン合金、或いは金合金よりなる第2ガス流路形成体41とを備えている。さらに、前記単セル12は、フェライト系SUS(ステンレス鋼)、チタン合金或いはカーボンよりなるそれぞれ平板状の第1セパレータ23及び第2セパレータ24を備えている。第1セパレータ23は、第1フレーム13及び第1ガス流路形成体31の上面に、図示しないシールリングを介して接合されている。第2セパレータ24は、第2フレーム14及び第2ガス流路形成体41の下面に、図示しないシールリングを介して接合されている。
 前記膜電極接合体15は、固体高分子電解質膜16と、第1電極触媒層17及び第2電極触媒層18と、第1ガス拡散層19及び第2ガス拡散層20とにより構成されている。
 第1電極触媒層17は、電解質膜16のアノード側の面、即ち図1中の上面に触媒を積層することにより形成されている。第2電極触媒層18は、電解質膜16のカソード側の面、即ち図1中の下面に触媒を積層することにより形成されている。前記固体高分子電解質膜16は、湿潤状態で良好なプロトン伝導性を有する固体高分子材料で作製されている。そのような固体高分子材料としてはフッ素系の高分子膜(例えば、デュポン社製のナフィオン膜等)がある。前記電極触媒層17,18は、図示しない炭素粒子を含んでおり、炭素粒子の表面には白金(Pt)からなる多数の触媒粒子が付着している。前記触媒粒子による触媒作用により、燃料電池の発電効率を高めることができる。なお、電極触媒層17,18に含まれる白金は、水素をプロトンと電子に分けるのを促進したり酸素とプロトンと電子から水を生成する反応を促進する作用を有するものであるが、同様の作用を有するものであれば白金以外のものを用いてもよい。
 アノード側の電極触媒層17には、導電性を有する第1ガス拡散層19が積層されている。カソード側の電極触媒層18には、導電性を有する第2ガス拡散層20が積層されている。ガス拡散層19,20は通常、カーボンペーパーやカーボンクロスにより構成されている。
 次に、前記第1ガス流路形成体31及び第2ガス流路形成体41について説明する。アノード側に位置する第1ガス流路形成体31とカソード側に位置する第2ガス流路形成体41とは同一構成を有しているので、前記第1ガス流路形成体31の構成についてのみ以下では説明する。もちろん、両者は同一構成でなくてもよい。図1~図4(b)において、第2ガス流路形成体41の構成のうち、第1ガス流路形成体31の構成と同一部分には、第1ガス流路形成体31の各部材の参照符号に100を足した参照符号を付している。従って、第2ガス流路形成体41に関しては、下記の説明中、「第1セパレータ23」を「第2セパレータ24」に、「前記ガス拡散層19」を「第2ガス拡散層20」に、「燃料ガス流方向P」を「酸化剤ガス流方向Q」にそれぞれ読替えるとともに、第1ガス流路形成体31の各部材の参照符号に100を足して読替えされたい。
 図2(a)において、燃料ガスの流れる方向を矢印Pで表す。図2(a)に示すように、第1ガス流路形成体31のガス拡散層19側の面(図2(a)中の上側の面)には、直線状に延びる複数の溝状のガス流路32が形成されている。第1ガス流路形成体31の第1セパレータ23側の面(図2(a)中の下側の面)には、直線状に延びる複数の導水路33が設けられている。本実施形態では、第1ガス流路形成体31は、燃料ガス流方向Pと直交する方向で切断した断面形状が、略波形となるように形成されている。なお、第1ガス流路形成体31の断面形状は、波形に限定されるものではなく、例えば、矩形状でもよい。ガス流路32は、燃料ガス流方向Pに延びるとともに前記ガス拡散層19側に突出した複数の突条34の間に形成されている。また、前記導水路33は、燃料ガス流方向Pに延びるとともに前記第1セパレータ23側に突出した複数の突条35間に形成されている。なお、第1ガス流路形成体31の断面形状は、サインカーブ状に限定するものではなく、三角波形状、パルス波形状等の他の波形形状であってもよい。
 図2(a)及び図2(b)に示すように、第1ガス流路形成体31には、前記突条34,35に対してプレス成形することにより、燃料ガス流方向Pと直交するリブ37が所定ピッチ毎に設けられている。リブ37は、相互に隣接する突条34、35とは、1/2ピッチをずらして形成されている。
 図2(b)に示すように、リブ37は、導水路33で突条35間を架橋する部位(以下、邪魔板部37aという)と、ガス流路32内に配置された部位37bを有する。同図に示すように、リブ37において、邪魔板部37aは、突条35の頂部側間に位置してその長さが、突条35の裏側に位置する部位37bの長さよりも長いものとなっている。その結果、ガス流路32及び導水路33をリブ37に沿って切断した場合、導水路33の断面積の方が、ガス流路32の断面積よりも狭くなる。従って、邪魔板部37aの存在によりガス流路32の方が開口断面積は実質上導水路33よりも広いため、ガスはガス流路32の方を主体に流れることになる。
 図1及び図2(b)に示すように、リブ37内には、リブ37の長さ方向に通路38が形成され、通路38により、隣接する導水路33間を水が通過可能にされている。なお、本実施形態では、第1ガス流路形成体31は、一枚の金属板から形成されているため、図2(b)に示すリブ37部分の厚みt2は、第1ガス流路形成体31の略波形をなす部分の厚みt1と、略同一としているが、両者の厚みは略同一に限定されるものではない。
 前記突条34の頂点は、図1に示すように前記ガス拡散層19に当接されるとともに、前記突条35の頂点は、前記第1セパレータ23に当接されている。なお、図1において、最上端側に位置する単セル12は、導水路33が図中に現れるような断面で切断されているのに対して、最下端側に位置する単セル12は、ガス流路32が図中に現れるような断面で切断されている。
 図1に示すように、前記突条34において、邪魔板部37aと対応する部位には、燃料ガス流方向P(すなわち、ガス流路32が伸びる方向)と直交して、前記ガス流路32と導水路33間を連通する複数の連通路36及び開孔部36aが、前記リブ37の形成時においてプレスにより切り込み形成されている(図3参照)。連通路36及び開孔部36aは、毛管作用が働く断面形状及び開口断面積を有している。また、連通路36における圧損は、ガス流路32における圧損よりも大きくされている。
 ここで、連通路36の合計の圧損をガス流路32の圧損よりも大きくする方法について説明する。
 例えば、連通路36が設けられておらず、かつ、滞留水が生じていない乾燥時のガス流路32の圧損をΔPdとし、同じく連通路36が設けられておらず、かつ、滞留水がガス流路32に滞留しているときのガス流路32の圧損をΔPwとする。この両者の関係を、ΔPw=k・ΔPdとする。ここで、係数kは1よりも大きい値(1<k)であり、2以上であってもよい。
 一方、ガス流路32に設けられている連通路36の圧損をΔPiとする。なお、iは、i=1,2,……,nであり、nはガス流路32に滞留水があった場合の滞留水が存在する位置からガス流路の上流に位置する連通路36の個数である。
 ここで、ガス流路32の圧損と連通路36の圧損の関係を、
 ΔPw=k・ΔPd<(ΔP1+ΔP2+…+ΔPn)
とする。
 このようにガス流路32の圧損及び連通路36の圧損の大小関係を成立させるべく、かつ、連通路36が、毛管作用が働くようにその幅及び幅に直交する高さ(すなわち、前記断面形状の大きさ)を設定するとともに、ガス流路32の圧損を規定する断面積(すなわち、前記断面積を決定する幅等)を設定する。
 図1に示すように、前記各単セル12のフレーム13,14及びセパレータ23,24には、図示しない燃料ガス供給源(例えば水素ボンベ)から燃料ガス(水素ガス)を前記燃料のガス流路32へ供給するための導入通路R1が形成されるとともに、発電に供された燃料オフガスを外部に導出するための導出通路R2が形成されている。
 また、前記単セル12のフレーム13,14及びセパレータ23,24には、図示しない酸化剤ガス供給源(例えばコンプレッサ)から酸化剤ガス(空気)を前記酸化剤のガス流路132へ導入するための導入通路M1が形成されるとともに、発電に供された酸化オフガスを外部に導出するための導出通路M2が形成されている。
 (実施形態の作用)
 さて、上記のように構成された燃料電池の作用を説明する。
 図1において、燃料(水素)ガスは、前記導入通路R1から第1ガス流路形成体31のガス流路32内に供給され、ガス流路32内を燃料ガス流方向P(図1の左方向)に流れる。燃料ガスは、ガス流路32内において第1ガス拡散層19を拡散及び通過することによって第1電極触媒層17に均一に供給される。図1において、コンプレッサによって供給された酸化剤(酸素)ガスは、前記導入通路M1を通して、前記第2ガス流路形成体41のガス流路132に供給され、ガス流路132内を酸化剤ガス流方向Q(図1の右方向)に流れる。酸化剤ガスは、ガス流路132内において第2ガス拡散層20を拡散及び通過することによって第2電極触媒層18に均一に供給される。燃料(水素)ガス及び酸化剤(酸素)ガスが供給されることにより、膜電極接合体15において電極反応が起こり、発電が行われる。その結果、積層された複数の単セル12及び図示しない冷却水流路によって構成された燃料電池11から、所望の電力が出力される。
 また、図4(a)に示すように発電の際に用いられなかった一部の燃料ガスは、燃料オフガスとして第1ガス流路形成体31の燃料ガス流路32から導出通路R2を通って外部に排出される。発電の際に用いられなかった酸化剤ガスは、ガス流路132から酸化オフガスとして導出通路M2を通って外部に排出される。
 また、前述した膜電極接合体15における電極反応によって、カソード側の第2ガス流路形成体41のガス流路132に水が生成する。生成した水の一部は、図4(b)に示すようにガス流路132内を流れる酸化剤ガスの流動圧力によって導出通路R2に排出される。すなわち、燃料電池が高負荷時には、酸化剤ガスは連通路136を流れず、ガス流路132の水を押し出しながら流れる。また、一部の水は連通路136を介して導水路133に流れ、導出通路R2に排水される。
 なお、前記生成水の一部は、ガス流路132内の酸化剤ガスの圧力が燃料ガスのガス流路32内の燃料ガスの圧力よりも高いので、その圧力差により、カソード側の前記第2電極触媒層18、固体高分子電解質膜16、第1電極触媒層17及び第1ガス拡散層19を浸透して、第1ガス流路形成体31の燃料ガス流路32へ浸透水として流入する。この浸透水はガス流路32内を流れる燃料ガスの流動圧力によって導出通路M2へ排出される。
 この場合においても、燃料電池が高負荷時には、燃料ガスは連通路36を流れず、ガス流路32の水を押し出しながら流れる。
 また、燃料電池の低負荷時では、ガス流(ガスの圧力)は弱くなるが、この場合、図3に示すように、ガス流路132の生成水が、連通路136に触れると毛管作用により、連通路136を介して、導水路133に流入する。このため、ガス流路132には、生成水の滞留が抑制される。低負荷時において、燃料ガス流路32へ、流入した浸透水がガス流路32内に移動した場合には、同様に浸透水が連通路36に触れると毛管作用により、連通路36を介して、導水路33に流入する。このため、ガス流路32には、浸透水の滞留が抑制される。このようにして、本実施形態では、生成水及び浸透水がガス流路32、132に滞留しなくなるため、ガス拡散性を向上するとともに、膜電極接合体15における電極反応を均一化して、すなわち、電流分布の均一化を図ることができ、その結果、発電性能が向上する。
 本実施形態の燃料電池によれば、以下のような効果を得ることができる。
 (1) 本実施形態の燃料電池は、第1ガス流路形成体31及び第2ガス流路形成体41とは別体に設けられた第1セパレータ23及び第2セパレータ24を備えている。第1ガス流路形成体31には、隣接するガス流路32、132間に排水のための導水路33、133が設けられている。導水路33、133とそれに隣接するガス流路32、132との間には、ガス流路32、132内の水を前記導水路に導くための連通路36、136が設けられている。そして、連通路36、136はそれぞれガス流路32、132に比して高い圧力損失を有している。この結果、本実施形態によれば、高負荷時及び低負荷時にかかわらず、ガス拡散性を向上できるとともに電流分布の均一化を図ることができ、その結果、発電性能を向上することができる。
 (2) 本実施形態の燃料電池は、第1ガス流路形成体31及び第2ガス流路形成体41は、セパレータとはそれぞれ別体に設けられている。また、第1ガス流路形成体31及び第2ガス流路形成体41の各ガス流路32、132は、固体高分子電解質膜16に面しており、第1ガス流路形成体31及び第2ガス流路形成体41の各導水路33、133は、第1ガス流路形成体31及び第2ガス流路形成体41側の第1セパレータ23、及び第2セパレータ24にそれぞれ面している。これにより、上記(1)の効果を容易に実現できる。
 (3) 本実施形態では、連通路36、136は、その断面形状の大きさが、毛管作用が働く大きさに形成されて、前記ガス流路32、132内の水が毛管作用により連通路36、136に導かれる。この結果、燃料電池の低負荷時においても、浸透水が連通路36に触れると毛管作用により、連通路36を介して、導水路33に流入させることができるため、ガス流路に浸透水が滞留するのを抑制することができる。
 (4) 本実施形態の燃料電池では、ガス流路32、132が溝状であることにより、ガス流路を容易に形成できる。
 (5) 本実施形態の燃料電池では、ガス流路32、132及び導水路33、133は直線状に形成され、前記連通路36、136の断面形状の大きさが、毛管作用が働く大きさに形成されて、ガス流路32、132内の水が前記毛管作用により導水路に導かれている。この結果、本実施形態によれば、ガス流路及び導水路を容易に形成できるとともに、燃料電池の低負荷時においても、浸透水が連通路に触れると毛管作用により、連通路を介して、導水路に流入させることができるため、ガス流路に浸透水が滞留するのを抑制することができる。
 なお、本実施形態は以下のように変更してもよい。
 ・ 前記実施形態では、第1ガス流路形成体31及び第2ガス流路形成体41を第1セパレータ23、及び第2セパレータ24とは別体に設けたが、第1ガス流路形成体31及び第2ガス流路形成体41の少なくともいずれか一方をセパレータと一体に設けても良い。
 図5は、その一例であり、平板状の第1セパレータ23(第2セパレータ24)に対して、断面台形状をなす複数の突条200を直線状に平行に設けて、その間の溝部202をガス通路(ガス流路32、132)としたものである。そして、各突条200の頂部には、燃料ガス流方向P(酸化剤ガス流方向Q)に沿って直線状に延びる導水路33(導水路133)を設け、導水路33(導水路133)とガス流路32(ガス流路132)の間には連通路36(連通路136)がそれぞれ設けられている。すなわち、突条200の導水路33(導水路133)に対しその突条200を挟んで隣接する一対のガス流路32(ガス流路132)が連通路36(連通路136)を介して連通している。本例においても、連通路36(連通路136)は、毛管作用が働くように形成されている。
 図6は、第1ガス流路形成体31及び第2ガス流路形成体41を第1セパレータ23及び第2セパレータ24と一体に設けた他の一例である。
 図6の例では、平板状をなす材料が、プレス成形等により、断面が凹凸を繰り返すように形成されて複数の台形状の突条200と複数の溝部202とが直線状に形成されている。溝部202がガス流路32(ガス流路132)とされている。また、各突条200の頂面には、導水路33(導水路133)が燃料ガス流方向P(酸化剤ガス流方向Q)に沿って形成されている。また、導水路33(導水路133)には、隣接するガス流路32(ガス流路132)にそれぞれ開口する連通路36(連通路136)が複数個設けられている。
 図5又は図6のセパレータを備える燃料電池によれば、第1ガス流路形成体31及び第2ガス流路形成体41は、第1セパレータ23、及び第2セパレータ24とそれぞれ一体に設けられ、第1ガス流路形成体31及び第2ガス流路形成体41の各ガス流路32、132及び各導水路33、133は、固体高分子電解質膜に面していることにより、第1実施形態の上記(1)と同様の効果を奏する。
 なお、導水路33(導水路133)は、図5、図6に示すような配置に限定される必要はなく、任意に配置してもよい。
 ・ 前記実施形態では、複数の溝状のガス流路32が直線状に形成するとともに第1セパレータ23側側面には、複数の導水路33を直線状に設けたが、直線状に限定する必要はなく、曲線状等の他の形状にしてもよい。
 ・ 前記実施形態の燃料電池11のガス流路形成体31(41)は、図7に示すようなガス流路形成体31(41)で置き換えられてもよい。図7のガス流路形成体31(41)の場合、燃料ガス流方向P(又は酸化剤ガス流方向Q)の上流側の部分には燃料ガス流方向P(又は酸化剤ガス流方向Q)に沿って所定間隔ごとに連通路36(136)が設けられている一方、燃料ガス流方向P(又は酸化剤ガス流方向Q)の下流側の部分には連通路36(136)が設けられていない。燃料ガス流方向P(又は酸化剤ガス流方向Q)の下流側の連通路36(136)が設けられていない部分の燃料ガス流方向P(又は酸化剤ガス流方向Q)の長さLは、前記所定間隔の大きさよりも大きいことが好ましい。この場合、ガス流路32(132)の燃料ガス(又は酸化剤ガス)が連通路36(136)を通じて導水路33(133)に流れ込むのを抑制することができる。なぜならば、燃料ガス流方向P(又は酸化剤ガス流方向Q)の下流側の部分に連通路36(136)が設けられていないことにより、ガス流路32(132)にたとえ滞留水がある場合でも、ガス流路32の圧損に比べて導水路33(133)の圧損が十分に大きくなるためである。導水路33(133)に流れ込んだガスは発電に利用されることなく排出されてしまうため、導水路33(133)への燃料ガス(又は酸化剤ガス)の流れ込みを抑制することにより、ガス利用効率を向上させることができる。
 ・ 前記実施形態の燃料電池11のガス流路形成体31(41)は、図8~図10のいずれかに示すようなガス流路形成体31(41)で置き換えられてもよい。図8のガス流路形成体31(41)の場合、燃料ガス流方向P(又は酸化剤ガス流方向Q)の下流側の部分が平坦になっていることにより、同部分に対応する位置で隣り合う導水路33(133)同士が連通している。図9のガス流路形成体31(41)の場合、燃料ガス流方向P(又は酸化剤ガス流方向Q)の下流側の部分を部分的に持ち上げて形成したことにより、同部分に対応する位置で一部の隣接する導水路33(133)同士が連通している。図10のガス流路形成体31(41)の場合、燃料ガス流方向P(又は酸化剤ガス流方向Q)の下流側の部分をすべて持ち上げて形成したことにより、同部分に対応する位置ですべての導水路33(133)が連通している。これらの場合も、ガス流路32(132)にたとえ滞留水がある場合でも、ガス流路32の圧損に比べて導水路33(133)の圧損が十分に大きくなるために、ガス流路32(132)の燃料ガス(又は酸化剤ガス)が連通路36(136)を通じて導水路33(133)に流れ込むのを抑制することができる。

Claims (7)

  1.  スタックされた複数の単セルを有する燃料電池であって、各単セルは、膜電極接合体と、膜電極接合体を間に挟んで配置される一対のセパレータとを備え、前記膜電極接合体は、固体高分子電解質膜と、固体高分子電解質膜のアノード側の面及びカソード側の面にそれぞれ積層された電極触媒層と、各電極触媒層の外側面に積層されたガス拡散層とを備え、各単セルのガス拡散層のそれぞれの外側面にはガス流路形成体が積層されていて、これにより各単セルは燃料ガス用のガス流路及び酸化剤ガス用のガス流路を有しており、
     各単セルのガス流路形成体のうち少なくとも一方は、複数のガス流路と、隣接するガス流路の間にそれぞれ位置する導水路とを備え、各ガス流路とそれに隣接する導水路との間には、ガス流路内の水を導水路に導くための連通路が設けられており、その連通路がガス流路に比べて高い圧力損失を有することを特徴とする燃料電池。
  2.  前記連通路は、毛管作用により前記ガス流路内の水を前記導水路に導くことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の燃料電池。
  3.  前記ガス流路は溝状であることを特徴とする請求項1又は請求項2に記載の燃料電池。
  4.  各単セルのガス流路形成体のうち少なくとも一方は、ガス流路内をガスが流れる方向であるガス流方向の上流側の部分にはガス流方向に沿って所定間隔ごとに連通路が設けられている一方、ガス流方向の下流側の部分には連通路が設けられておらず、ガス流方向の下流側の連通路が設けられていないガス流路形成体の部分のガス流方向の長さは前記所定間隔の大きさよりも大きいことを特徴とする請求項1乃至請求項3のうちいずれか1項に記載の燃料電池。
  5.  各単セルのガス流路形成体のうち少なくとも一方は、ガス流路内をガスが流れる方向であるガス流方向の下流側の部分が平坦に形成されるか或いは持ち上げて形成されることにより、同部分に対応する位置で少なくとも一部の連通路が互いに連通していることを特徴とする請求項1乃至請求項3のうちいずれか1項に記載の燃料電池。
  6.  前記ガス流路形成体は、前記セパレータとそれぞれ一体に設けられ、
     各ガス流路形成体のガス流路及び導水路は、前記膜電極接合体に面していることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の燃料電池。
  7.  各ガス流路形成体のガス流路及び導水路は直線状に延びており、前記連通路は、毛管作用により前記ガス流路内の水を前記導水路に導くことを特徴とする請求項1乃至請求項6のうちいずれか1項に記載の燃料電池。
