Abstract
전해질층과, 전해질층의 양면들 각각에 공기극층 및 연료극층을 포함하여 전기를 생성하는 연료 전지가 다수 적층되는 스택 구조물은 인터커넥터 및 프레임을 포함한다. 인터커넥터는 다수의 연료 전지들 사이에서 각 연료 전지를 지지하면서 전기적으로 연결되는 중심 영역과 연료 전지의 단부로부터 연장된 면에 대응하는 에지 영역으로 구분된다. 프레임은 인터커넥터의 에지 영역에서 연료 전지의 측부를 지지하도록 배치되며, 그 전체면에 코팅된 복합기능층을 갖는다.
Description
본 발명은 연료 전지용 스택 구조물에 관한 것으로써, 더욱 상세하게는 전력량을 증가시키기 위해 다수의 연료 전지들을 적층한 스택 구조물에 관한 것이다.
일반적으로, 연료 전지란 전해질층 양면들 각각에 공기극층 및 연료극층을 형성하고, 이 공기극층 및 연료극층 각각에 산소를 포함하는 공기와 수소를 포함하는 연료 가스를 흘려주면 상기의 전해질층에서 이온 전도현상을 통해 수소와 산소가 전기화학적으로 반응하여 전기를 생성하는 발전 장치이다.
이러한 연료 전지는 에너지 전환단계가 간단하고 원리적으로 수소를 산화시켜 에너지를 생산하는 고효율, 무공해 발전기라는 친환경적인 특성 때문에 최근 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다.
특히, 상기 연료 전지 중 고체산화물 연료 전지(SOFC)는 전해질로써 세라믹을 사용하여 약 600 내지 1000 ℃ 정도의 고온에서 작동되는 연료전지로써, 다른 용융탄산염 연료전지(MCFC), 인산형 연료전지(PAFC), 고분자형 연료전지(PEFC) 등 여러 형태의 연료 전지들 중 가장 효율이 높고 공해가 적을 뿐 아니라, 연료 개질기를 필요로 하지 않고 복합발전이 가능하다는 여러 장점을 지니고 있다.
이러한 연료 전지의 전해질층, 공기극층 및 연료극층이 한 쌍으로 이루어진 것을 통상 단전지(single cell)라고 하며, 이 단전지가 생성하는 전기는 대략 1V 미만의 전압으로 실효성이 없기 때문에 이를 스택 구조물 형태로 다수 적층함으로써 생성되는 전압을 높이는 기술이 각광을 받고 있다.
이러한 스택 구조물에는 상기 단전지들 사이에서 이들을 전기적으로 연결함은 물론, 상기 단전지의 공기극층 및 연료극층과 접하는 위치에서 상기 공기 또는 연료 가스를 흘려주기 위한 채널이 형성된 다수의 인터커넥터들이 반드시 필요하다. 또한, 각 인터커넥터에는 실질적으로 상기 공기 또는 연료 가스가 서로 혼합되지 않도록 실링하는 세라믹 재질 중 하나인 유리 재질의 실링부가 배치되면서 상기 공기 또는 연료 가스를 공급하기 위하여 상기 단전지의 단부로부터 연장된 면과 대응하는 에지 영역도 반드시 필요하다.
이때, 상기 스택 구조물은 체적을 줄이고자 상기 단전지들과 상기 인터커넥터들의 두께를 매우 얇게 제작할 경우, 운전 시 열과 하중에 의해 휨 또는 처짐 등이 발생되지 않도록 상기 인터커넥터들 사이에서 강도를 보강하기 위하여 상기 에지 영역에 배치된 프레임을 더 포함한다. 이에, 상기 프레임에는 강도 보강을 위해 금속 물질이 포함된다.
이럴 경우, 상기 연료 전지들이 상기의 고온에서 작동하는 동안 상기 프레임으로부터 금속 물질이 휘발 또는 그 계면에서 확산되어 상기 공기와 접하는 공기극층으로 유입됨으로써, 이에 따른 금속 휘발물 또는 확산물이 상기 공기극층에 포함된 물질과 반응하여 복합 산화물을 생성할 수 있다. 이러면, 상기 복합 산화물에 의해서 상기 단전지의 통전성이 떨어져 결국 그 발전 성능이 저하될 수 있다.
또한, 상기 프레임과 상기 인터커넥터들 사이에도 상기 실링부가 배치되며, 이럴 경우 상기 금속 물질을 포함하는 프레임과 상기 세라믹 재질로 이루어진 실링부가 서로 다른 특성의 재질로 이루어져 있으므로, 상기 연료 전지들이 작동하는 온도가 급변하는 동안 물질의 특성 차이로 인해 서로 분리되어 기밀성이 파괴될 수 있다.
또한, 상기 공기 또는 연료 가스를 공급하기 위한 배관 또는 기타 이들 경로 상의 금속 재질에서 발생되는 다른 금속 휘발물로 인하거나, 상기 인터커넥터 또는 상기 프레임의 단부로부터 휘발된 금속 물질에 의해서 상기 실링부의 외측에 형성된 반응상으로 인하거나, 상기 실링부의 외측에서 상기 인터커넥터와 상기 프레임이 마주하는 부위에 형성된 산화물 스케일(scale)로 인하거나, 상기 실링부의 외측 공간에 존재할 수 있는 단열재 조각 또는 먼지로 인하여 불순물이 발생될 수 있으며, 이럴 경우 이 불순물이 상기 실링부, 상기 인터커넥터 또는 상기 프레임의 외곽을 따라 반응상을 생성하여 전체적으로 전류가 통전되는 전기 누설(shunt) 현상이 발생될 수 있다.
본 발명의 목적은 고체산화물 연료 전지의 스택을 구성하는데 있어서 강도를 보강하기 위한 프레임에 포함되어 있는 금속 물질이 휘발 또는 확산되는 것을 방지하고, 상기 프레임과 실링부의 부착력을 향상시키며, 불순물에 의한 전기 누설(shunt)을 방지할 수 있는 연료 전지용 스택 구조물을 제공하는 것이다.
상술한 본 발명의 목적을 달성하기 위하여, 일 특징에 따른 전해질층과, 상기 전해질층의 양면들 각각에 공기극층 및 연료극층을 포함하여 전기를 생성하는 연료 전지가 다수 적층되는 스택 구조물은 인터커넥터 및 프레임을 포함한다.
상기 인터커넥터는 상기 다수의 연료 전지들 사이에서 각 연료 전지를 지지하면서 전기적으로 연결되는 중심 영역과 상기 연료 전지의 단부로부터 연장된 면에 대응하는 에지 영역으로 구분된다. 상기 프레임은 상기 인터커넥터의 에지 영역에서 상기 연료 전지의 측부를 지지하도록 배치되며, 그 전체면에 코팅된 복합기능층을 갖는다.
일 실시예에 따른 상기 복합기능층은 절연성 세라믹 재질로 이루어질 수 있다. 이에, 상기 복합기능층은 산화물 또는 유리를 포함할 수 있다.
일 실시예에 따른 상기 스택 구조물은 상기 에지 영역에서 상기 인터커넥터와 상기 프레임의 복합기능층 사이에서 이들의 간격을 일정하게 유지시키는 간격 유지부를 더 포함할 수 있다.
일 실시예에 따른 상기 스택 구조물은 상기 에지 영역에서 상기 인터커넥터와 상기 프레임의 복합기능층 사이를 실링하며, 절연성 세라믹 재질, 마이카(MICA) 재질 또는 금속 개스킷(metal gasket)으로 이루어진 실링부를 더 포함할 수 있다.
일 실시예에 따른 상기 프레임은 크롬(Cr)을 포함하는 금속 혼합 물질로 이루어질 수 있다.
이러한 연료 전지용 스택 구조물에 따르면, 다수의 인터커넥터들 사이에서 상기 스택 구조물의 강도를 보강하면서 고체산화물 연료 전지(SOFC)의 작동 온도인 약 600 내지 1000℃ 고온에서 견딜 수 있도록 금속 물질을 포함하는 프레임의 전체면에 상기 금속 물질의 휘발 또는 확산을 방지하기 위한 복합기능층을 코팅함으로써, 상기 금속 휘발물 또는 확산물이 공기가 공급되는 공기극층의 물질과 반응하여 복합 산화물이 생성되는 것을 방지할 수 있다. 이에 따라, 상기 복합 산화물에 의해 통전성, 통기성 및 공기극층 촉매 활성이 떨어지는 것을 방지함으로써, 상기 연료 전지의 발전 성능이 저하되는 것을 방지할 수 있다.
또한, 상기 프레임의 복합기능층이 상기 인터커넥터와 상기 프레임 사이에서 이 공간을 실링하기 위한 실링부와 유사한 특성을 갖는 절연성 세라믹 재질로 이루어짐으로써, 상기 복합기능층과 상기 실링부와의 부착력을 향상시킬 수 있다.
뿐만 아니라, 상기 프레임의 복합기능층이 상기 프레임 전체면에 형성됨으로써, 상기 공기 또는 연료 가스를 공급하기 위한 배관 또는 기타 이들 경로 상의 금속 재질에서 발생되는 다른 금속 휘발물로 인하거나, 상기 인터커넥터 또는 상기 프레임의 단부로부터 휘발된 금속 물질에 의해서 상기 실링부의 외측에 형성된 반응상으로 인하거나, 상기 실링부의 외측에서 상기 인터커넥터와 상기 프레임이 마주하는 부위에 형성된 산화물 스케일(scale)로 인하거나, 상기 실링부의 외측 공간에 존재할 수 있는 단열재 조각 또는 먼지로 인한 여러 불순물이 유입되어 형성되는 반응상들 때문에 전기가 누설(shunt)되는 것을 방지할 수 있으며, 이에 따라서 의도하지 않은 경로로 전기가 통전되는 것을 방지하여 상기 연료 전지의 발전 성능이 저하되는 것을 더욱 방지할 수 있다.
이와 같이, 본 발명은 상기 프레임의 전체면에 상기 복합기능층을 코팅하는 구조만으로, 발전 장치인 연료 전지용 스택 구조물에서 가장 중요한 장기 안정성을 확보할 수 있는 효과를 기대할 수 있다.

도 1 내지 도 4를 참조하면, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 연료 전지용 스택 구조물(1000)은 다수의 인터커넥터(100)들 및 다수의 프레임(200)들을 포함한다.
인터커넥터(100)들은 평판 구조를 갖는 연료 전지(10)들 사이에 배치된다. 여기서, 연료 전지(10)는 전해질층(12)과, 이 전해질층(12)의 양면들 각각에 공기극층(14) 및 연료극층(16)을 포함하여 전기를 생성한다. 구체적으로, 연료 전지(10)는 공기극층(14) 및 연료극층(16) 각각에 산소를 포함하는 공기와 수소를 포함하는 연료 가스를 흘려주면 전해질층(12)에서 이온 전도현상을 통해 수소와 산소가 전기화학적으로 반응하여 전기가 생성된다.
전해질층(12)은 높은 이온 전도성, 우수한 산화-환원 분위기에서의 안정성 및 우수한 기계적 특성을 갖는 이트륨(Y), 지르코늄(Zr), 란탄늄(La), 스트론튬(Sr), 갈륨(Ga), 마그네슘(Mg), 바륨(Ba), 세륨(Ce), 사마륨(Sm) 및 스칸듐(Sc)으로 구성되는 그룹 중 하나 이상의 물질 또는 그 복합물로 구성된 산화물로 이루어질 수 있다. 이외에, 전해질층(12)은 상기의 특성을 충분히 가지고 있는 물질이라면 상기에서 나열한 물질들 외에 적어도 하나의 다른 물질을 포함하거나 이 다른 물질이 단독 또는 복합물로 구성된 산화물로 대체될 수 있다. 이러한 전해질층(12)을 포함하는 연료 전지(10)를 통상적으로 고체산화물 연료 전지(SOFC)라고 명칭하며 약 600 내지 1000 ℃의 고온에서 작동되는 것이 특징이다. 공기극층(14)은 산소가 이동할 수 있도록 란탄늄(La), 스트론튬(Sr), 망간(Mn), 코발트(Co) 및 철(Fe)로 구성되는 그룹 중 하나 이상의 물질 또는 그 복합물로 구성된 산화물로 이루어질 수 있다. 이외에, 공기극층(14)은 상기의 특성을 충분히 가지고 있는 물질이라면 상기에서 나열한 물질들 외에 적어도 하나의 다른 물질을 포함하거나 이 다른 물질이 단독 또는 복합물로 구성된 산화물로 대체될 수 있다. 연료극층(16)은 수소가 이동할 수 있도록 이트륨(Y), 지르코늄(Zr), 스트론튬(Sr) 및 니켈(Ni)로 구성되는 그룹 중 하나 이상의 물질 또는 그 복합물로 구성된 산화물로 이루어질 수 있다. 이외에, 연료극층(16)은 상기의 특성을 충분히 가지고 있는 물질이라면 상기에서 나열한 물질들 외에 적어도 하나의 다른 물질을 포함하거나 이 다른 물질이 단독 또는 복합물로 구성된 산화물로 대체될 수 있다.
인터커넥터(100)는 연료 전지(10)보다 넓은 면적을 갖는다. 이에, 인터커넥터(100)는 연료 전지(10)를 지지하는 중심 영역(CA) 및 연료 전지(10)의 단부로부터 연장된 면에 대응하는 에지 영역(EA)으로 구분된다.
인터커넥터(100)는 전도성 재질로 이루어져 중심 영역(CA)에서 접하는 연료 전지(10)의 공기극층(14) 또는 연료극층(16)과 전기적으로 연결되면서 이를 지지한다. 예를 들어, 인터커넥터(100)는 크롬(Cr), 니켈(Ni) 및 철(Fe)을 포함하는 금속 혼합 물질로 이루어질 수 있다.
이와 같이, 인터커넥터(100)들이 적층된 연료 전지(10)들을 서로 직렬로 연결함으로써, 보다 높은 전압의 전기를 얻을 수 있다. 이때, 인터커넥터(100)들과 연료 전지(10)의 공기극층(14) 또는 연료극층(16) 사이에는 이들로부터 생성된 전기를 효율적으로 집전하기 위하여 별도의 다공성 집전판(미도시)이 추가로 배치될 수 있다.
또한, 인터커넥터(100)는 중심 영역(CA)에서 연료 전지(10)들의 공기극층(14) 또는 연료극층(16)과 마주하는 양면들 각각에 공기 또는 연료 가스를 균일하게 흘려줄 수 있는 다수의 제1 및 제2 채널(110, 120)들을 형성하기 위한 제1 및 제2 채널 형성부(130, 140)들을 포함할 수 있다. 이때, 공기 및 연료 가스가 제1 및 제2 채널(110, 120)들 각각을 따라 서로 혼합되지 않으면서 공급 및 배출되도록 제1 및 제2 채널 형성부(130, 140)들은 평면적으로 서로 수직한 방향을 따라 형성될 수 있다. 이에, 상기 인터커넥터(100)에는 상기 공기가 흐르는 제1 채널(110)을 따라 대향하는 제1 및 제2 측들에 공기홀(150)들이 형성되고, 상기 연료 가스가 흐르는 제2 채널(120)을 따라 대향하는 제3 및 제4 측들에는 연료홀(160)들이 형성될 수 있다.
프레임(200)들은 에지 영역(EA)에서 인터커넥터(100)들 사이에 배치된다. 프레임(200)은 연료 전지(10)의 측부를 추가로 지지하여 스택 구조물(1000)을 운전 시 열 또는 하중에 의해서 연료 전지(10)들 및 인터커넥터(100)들이 휘거나 처지지 않도록 강도를 보강할 수 있다. 또한, 연료 전지(10)가 단지 인터커넥터(100)들에 전기적으로 접촉하여 지지하고 있는 상태이므로, 프레임(200)은 연료 전지(10)의 측부를 일부 감싸도록, 즉 고정하도록 배치되어 연료 전지(10)를 가이드할 수 있다. 이럴 경우, 연료 전지(10)가 전해질층(12)과 연료극층(16)을 같이 소결한 다음, 그 위에 공기극층(14)을 형성하므로, 그 에지에서 전해질층(12)이 노출되도록 공기극층(14)을 형성한 다음, 프레임(200)을 상기의 노출된 전해질층(12)을 일부 감싸면서 고정하도록 배치시킬 수 있다. 이러면, 프레임(200)은 공기극층(14)과 인접한 위치에서 서로 노출된 구조를 가지게 된다.
또한, 프레임(200)은 상기의 강도 보강을 위하여 금속 재질로 이루어질 수 있다. 이때, 프레임(200)은 연료 전지(10)가 작동하는 약 600 내지 1000℃의 고온에서 견딜 수 있도록 열에 상대적으로 강한 크롬(Cr) 물질을 일부 포함할 수 있다. 또한, 프레임(200)은 니켈(Ni) 및 철(Fe) 추가로 포함하는 금속 혼합 물질로 이루어질 수 있다. 또한, 이러한 금속 재질의 프레임(200)이 인터커넥터(100)와 통전될 경우, 이들 사이에 위치하는 연료 전지(10)로부터 생성된 전기가 집전되지 못하게 되므로, 프레임(200)과 인터커넥터(100)는 서로 반드시 절연될 필요성이 있다.
프레임(200)은 그 전체면에 코팅된 복합기능층(210)을 갖는다. 이러한 복합기능층(210)은 프레임(200)에 포함되어 있는 금속 물질, 특히 크롬(Cr)의 휘발을 방지하거나 이 금속 물질이 그 계면에서 확산되어 생성되는 금속 휘발물 또는 확산물이 공기가 공급되는 공기극층(14)에 포함된 물질, 예컨대 란탄늄(La), 스트론튬(Sr), 망간(Mn), 코발트(Co) 또는 철(Fe)과 반응하여 복합 산화물이 생성되는 것을 방지할 수 있다. 이에 따라, 상기 복합 산화물에 의해 통전성, 통기성 및 공기극층(14) 촉매 활성이 떨어지는 것을 방지함으로써, 연료 전지(10)의 발전 성능이 저하되는 것을 방지할 수 있다.
또한, 복합기능층(210)은 내열성이 우수하면서 인터커넥터(100)와의 기본적인 절연을 위하여 절연성 세라믹 재질로 이루어질 수 있다. 예를 들어, 복합기능층(210)은 이트륨(Y), 지르코늄(Zr), 스트론튬(Sr), 마그네슘(Mg), 알루미늄(Al), 바륨(Ba), 실리콘(Si) 및 칼슘(Ca)으로 구성되는 그룹 중 하나 이상의 물질 또는 그 복합물로 구성된 산화물로 이루어지거나, 유리(glass) 물질을 포함할 수 있다. 이러한 물질들은 모두 기본적으로 고온에서 기밀성이 우수한 특성을 가지고 있다.
한편, 스택 구조물(1000)은 인터커넥터(100)들 사이의 에지 영역(EA)에서 연료 전지(10)의 공기극층(14) 및 연료극층(16) 각각으로 흘려주는 공기 및 연료 가스가 서로 혼합되지 않도록 프레임(200)의 복합기능층(210)과 그 양면들 각각에서 위치하는 인터커넥터(100)들 사이에 이들 각각의 공간을 실링하기 위하여 배치된 제1 및 제2 실링부(300, 400)들을 더 포함할 수 있다. 이때, 제1 및 제2 실링부(300, 400)들 중 어느 하나는 프레임(200)의 연료 전지(10)의 위치를 고정하기 위하여 전해질층(12)의 일부를 감싸고 있는 부위로 연장되어 배치될 수 있다. 이는, 프레임(200)이 복합기능층(210)에 의해서 기본적으로 절연되어 있더라도, 전해질층(12)과의 사이에서 전기가 통할 가능성이 있으므로, 이 가능성을 제1 또는 제2 실링부(300, 400)를 통해서 완벽하게 배제시키기 위해서이다.
이러한 제1 및 제2 실링부(300, 400)들은 기본적으로 기밀성이 우수함은 물론, 프레임(200)과 인터커넥터(100)들이 서로 절연되도록 절연성 세라믹 재질로 이루어질 수 있다. 이에, 제1 및 제2 실링부(300, 400)들은 절연성과 기밀성이 우수한 복합기능층(210)과 실질적으로 유사한 특성을 갖는 물질, 예컨대 절연성 세라믹 재질, 마이카(MICA) 재질 또는 금속 개스킷(metal gasket)으로 이루어질 수 있다. 이때, 제1 및 제2 실링부(300, 400)들이 절연성 세라믹 재질 중 하나인 유리(glass) 물질로 이루어질 경우, 유리(glass)의 특성 상 유동성을 가질 수밖에 없으므로, 이를 억제하기 위해 섬유(fiber)를 추가하여 상기의 유동성을 제어할 수 있다.
이와 같이, 프레임(200)의 복합기능층(210)이 인터커넥터(100)와 프레임(200) 사이에서 이 공간을 실링하기 위한 제1 및 제2 실링부(300, 400)들과 유사한 특성을 갖는 절연성 세라믹 재질로 이루어짐으로써, 복합기능층(210)과 제1 및 제2 실링부(300, 400)들과의 부착력을 향상시켜 연료 전지(10)의 작동 온도가 급변할 경우에도 기밀성이 그대로 유지되도록 할 수 있다. 또한, 스택 구조물(1000)의 구조 상 반드시 절연 상태가 유지되어야 하는 인터커넥터(100)들과 프레임(200)들 사이에서 절연 파괴를 유도할 수 있는 반응상이 생성되는 것을 방지함으로써, 상기의 반응상에 의해 연료 전지(10)의 발전 성능이 저하되는 것을 더욱 방지할 수 있다.
뿐만 아니라, 프레임(200)의 복합기능층(210)이 프레임(200) 전체면에 형성됨으로써, 공기 또는 연료 가스를 공급하기 위한 배관 또는 기타 이들 경로 상의 금속 재질에서 발생되는 다른 금속 휘발물로 인하거나, 인터커넥터(100) 또는 상기 프레임(200)의 단부로부터 휘발된 금속 물질에 의해서 제1 및 제2 실링부(300, 400)들의 외측에 형성된 반응상으로 인하거나, 제1 및 제2 실링부(300, 400)들의 외측에서 인터커넥터(100)와 프레임(200)이 마주하는 부위에 형성된 산화물 스케일(scale)로 인하거나, 제1 및 제2 실링부(300, 400)들의 외측 공간에 존재할 수 있는 단열재 조각 또는 먼지로 인한 여러 불순물이 유입되어 형성되는 반응상들 때문에 전기가 누설(shunt)되는 것을 방지할 수 있으며, 이에 따라서 의도하지 않은 경로로 전기가 통전되는 것을 방지하여 연료 전지(10)의 발전 성능이 저하되는 것을 더욱더 방지할 수 있다.
따라서, 본 발명은 프레임(200)의 전체면에 복합기능층(210)을 코팅하는 구조만으로, 발전 장치인 연료 전지용 스택 구조물(1000)에서 가장 중요한 장기 안정성을 확보할 수 있는 효과를 기대할 수 있다.
이하, 본 발명의 프레임(200)에 복합기능층(210)을 형성한 실시예와 그렇지 않은 비교예를 나타낸 도 5의 그래프를 추가적으로 참조하여 그 효과를 상세하게 설명하고자 한다.
도 5는 도 1에 도시된 스택 구조물에서 프레임에 복합기능층을 코팅한 실시예와 상기 복합기능층을 프레임의 상면에만 코팅한 비교예에 따른 실험 결과를 나타낸 그래프이다.
도 5를 추가적으로 참조하면, 본 실험은 동일한 개수의 연료 전지(10)들을 인터커넥터(100)들과 프레임(200)들 사이에 배치시킨 스택 구조물(1000)에서, 실시예에서는 프레임(200)들 모두에 복합기능층(210)을 형성하고, 다른 비교예에서는 프레임(200)들의 상면에만 복합기능층(210)을 형성한 상태에서 각각의 발전 전압을 시간에 따라 측정하였다.
그 결과, 실시예에서는 약 500시간(hr)이 지나는 동안에도 그 발전 전압이 거의 일정한데 반하여, 비교예에서는 최초부터도 발전 전압이 실시예보다 떨어질 뿐만 아니라 그 이후에서 계속적으로 발전 전압이 더 떨어지는 것을 확인하였다. 이에, 프레임(200)들의 일부면에만 복합기능층(210)을 형성할 경우에는 복합산화물이 생성되거나, 불순물에 의한 반응상으로 인한 전기 누설이 발생되거나, 절연 파괴가 이루어지는 등이 원인이 되어 상기의 결과에서와 같이 성능 저하가 발생되는 것으로 확인할 수 있었다. 따라서, 프레임(200)에 복합기능층(210)을 일체 형성하지 않을 경우는 성능이 더욱 저하될 것으로 예측할 수 있다.
이에 따라, 본 발명의 프레임(200)들 각각의 전면에 복합기능층(210)을 형성하면 발전 장치인 연료 전지(10)에서 가장 중요한 발전 전압이 그렇지 않을 때보다 장기적으로 확연하게 안정적이라는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
또한, 스택 구조물(1000)은 에지 영역(EA)에서 프레임(200)의 복합기능층(210)과 인터커넥터(100) 사이에 절연성의 복합기능층(210)이 있더라도 이들이 서로 단락될 가능성이 있을 수 있으므로, 이를 완전하게 배제시키기 위하여 이들의 간격을 일정하게 유지시키는 적어도 하나의 간격 유지부(500)를 더 포함할 수 있다. 이때, 간격 유지부(500)는 프레임(200) 및 인터커넥터(100)들 사이에 별도로 제작하여 배치시킬 수 있다. 이와 달리, 간격 유지부(500)는 프레임(200) 및 인터커넥터(100)들 중 어느 하나로부터 다른 하나로 돌출된 구조로 형성될 수도 있다. 구체적으로, 연료극층(16)과 대응되는 간격 유지부(500)는 인터커넥터(100)에 도트(dot) 형태로 형성될 수 있고, 공기극층(14)과 대응되는 간격 유지부(500)는 프레임(200)에 도트(dot) 형태로 형성될 수 있다. 이럴 경우, 프레임(200)에 형성된 간격 유지부(500)는 실질적으로 프레임(200)에 단순한 요철 구조를 가지므로, 이 간격 유지부(500) 상에도 복합기능층(210)이 같이 형성될 수 있다.
이러한 간격 유지부(500)는 절연성의 세라믹 재질로 이루어질 수 있다. 이에, 간격 유지부(500)도 복합기능층(210)과 유사한 특성을 가지게 된다. 이러면, 간격 유지부(500)와 복합기능층(210)의 부착력도 향상되어 상기의 간격 유지 기능을 더욱 안정적으로 수행할 수 있다. 또한, 간격 유지부(500)는 공기 또는 연료 가스를 경로 상의 입구 또는 출구에 위치하여 공기 또는 연료 가스가 제1 또는 제2 채널(110, 120)들에 균일하게 흐를 수 있도록 할 수 있다. 또한, 다수의 간격 유지부(500)들은 서로 교대로 적층되는 구조를 갖는 인터커넥터(100)들과 프레임(200)들을 모두 효율적으로 지지할 수 있도록 스택 구조물(1000)의 적층 방향을 따라 일직선 상에 배치될 수 있다.
또한, 스택 구조물(1000)은 간격 유지부(500)의 위치를 안정적으로 고정하기 위해 간격 유지부(500)의 측부를 지지할 수 있는 다수의 지지부(600)들을 더 포함할 수 있다. 이러한 지지부(600)들은 간격 유지부(500)와 마찬가지로, 프레임(200) 및 인터커넥터(100)들 중 어느 하나로부터 다른 하나로 돌출된 구조로 형성될 수 있다. 구체적으로, 연료극층(16)과 대응되는 지지부(600)들은 인터커넥터(100)에 도트(dot) 형태로 형성될 수 있고, 공기극층(14)과 대응되는 지지부(600)들은 프레임(200)에 도트(dot) 형태로 형성될 수 있다. 이럴 경우, 프레임(200)에 형성된 지지부(600)들도 단순한 요철 구조를 가지므로, 이 지지부(600)들 상에도 복합기능층(210)이 같이 형성될 수 있다.
또한, 스택 구조물(1000)은 적층되는 양 단부들 각각에 배치되어 연료 전지(10)들, 인터커넥터(100)들 및 프레임(200)들을 외부로부터 보호하면서 전체적인 강도를 제공하는 제1 및 제2 엔드플레이트(700, 800)들을 더 포함할 수 있다.
제1 엔드플레이트(700)에는 연료 전지(10)의 공기극층(14) 및 연료극층(16) 각각에 공기 및 연료 가스를 공급하기 위하여 외부의 공기공급장치(미도시) 및 연료가스공급장치(미도시)와 연결되는 제1 및 제2 연결 소켓(710, 720)들이 형성될 수 있다. 이에, 제1 및 제2 연결 소켓(710, 720)들 각각은 실질적으로 공기홀(150) 및 연료홀(160)에 연결되어 이들에 공기 및 연료 가스를 공급하는 구조를 가질 수 있다.
이상에서 설명한 본 발명의 스택 구조물은 전해질로써 세라믹을 사용하는 고체산화물 연료 전지(SOFC)에 적용되는 것이 바람직하다고 설명하였지만, 전력량을 증가시키기 위해 스택 구조를 가질 수 있는 다른 용융탄산염 연료 전지(MCFC), 인산형 연료 전지(PAFC) 또는 고분자형 연료 전지(PEFC)에도 적용될 수 있음을 이해할 수 있다.
앞서 설명한 본 발명의 상세한 설명에서는 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예들을 참조하여 설명하였지만, 해당 기술 분야의 숙련된 당업자 또는 해당 기술분야에 통상의 지식을 갖는 자라면 후술될 특허청구범위에 기재된 본 발명의 사상 및 기술 영역으로부터 벗어나지 않는 범위 내에서 본 발명을 다양하게 수정 및 변경시킬 수 있음을 이해할 수 있을 것이다.
상술한 바와 같이, 다수의 연료 전지들이 적층되는 스택 구조물에 있어서, 인터커넥터들 사이에서 상기 스택 구조물의 강도를 보강하기 위하여 금속 물질을 포함하는 프레임에 상기 금속 물질의 휘발 또는 확산을 방지하기 위한 복합기능층을 그 전체면에 코팅하여, 이 금속 휘발물 또는 확산물에 의해 통전성, 통기성 및 공기극층 촉매 활성을 떨어뜨리는 복합 산화물이 생성되는 것을 방지하고, 상기 복합기능층을 실링부와 유사한 특성을 갖는 절연성 세라믹 재질로 형성하여 이들의 부착력을 향상시키며, 연료 가스 또는 공기에 함유된 금속 물질 또는 금속 산화물을 포함하는 여러 불순물이 유입되어 형성되는 반응상들로 인하여 전기가 누설(shunt)되는 것을 방지함으로써, 상기 스택 구조물의 발전 성능을 장기적으로 안정하게 유지하는데 이용될 수 있다.

Claims (7)
- 전해질층과, 상기 전해질층의 양면들 각각에 공기극층 및 연료극층을 포함하여 전기를 생성하는 연료 전지가 다수 적층되는 스택 구조물에 있어서,상기 다수의 연료 전지들 사이에서 각 연료 전지를 지지하면서 전기적으로 연결되는 중심 영역과 상기 연료 전지의 단부로부터 연장된 면에 대응하는 에지 영역으로 구분되는 인터커넥터; 및상기 인터커넥터의 에지 영역에서 상기 연료 전지의 측부를 지지하도록 배치되며, 그 전체면에 코팅된 복합기능층을 갖는 프레임을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 연료 전지용 스택 구조물.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 복합기능층은 절연성 세라믹 재질로 이루어진 것을 특징으로 하는 연료 전지용 스택 구조물.
- 제2항에 있어서, 상기 복합기능층은 산화물 또는 유리를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 연료 전지용 스택 구조물.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 에지 영역에서 상기 인터커넥터와 상기 프레임의 복합기능층 사이에서 이들의 간격을 일정하게 유지시키는 간격 유지부를 더 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 연료 전지용 스택 구조물.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 에지 영역에서 상기 인터커넥터와 상기 프레임의 복합기능층 사이를 실링하며, 절연성 세라믹 재질, 마이카(MICA) 재질 또는 금속 개스킷(metal gasket)으로 이루어진 실링부를 더 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 연료 전지용 스택 구조물.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 프레임은 크롬(Cr)을 포함하는 금속 혼합 물질로 이루어지는 것을 특징으로 연료 전지용 스택 구조물.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 연료 전지는 고체산화물 연료 전지(SOFC)를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 연료 전지용 스택 구조물.
