Abstract

본 발명은 리튬-황 전지에 관한 것이다. 보다 구체적으로, 본 발명은 황을 포함하는 양극 및 분리막 사이에 전해액을 함유하는 고분자 부직포를 더 포함하는 리튬-황 전지에 관한 것이다. 본 발명에 따른 리튬-황 전지는 양극과 분리막 사이에 전해액을 함유하는 고분자 부직포를 더 포함함으로써 양극에 전해액을 지속적으로 공급할 수 있으며, 폴리설파이드의 용출을 억제할 수 있다. 이에 따라, 본 발명에 따른 리튬-황 전지는 방전 과전압이 감소하며, 우수한 방전 용량 및 수명 특성을 나타낸다.

Description

리튬-황 전지
본 출원은 2016년 9월 9일자 한국 특허 출원 제10-2016-0116155호에 기초한 우선권의 이익을 주장하며, 해당 한국 특허 출원의 문헌에 개시된 모든 내용을 본 명세서의 일부로서 포함한다.
본 발명은 리튬-황 전지에 관한 것이다. 보다 구체적으로, 본 발명은 황을 포함하는 양극 및 분리막 사이에 전해액을 함유하는 고분자 부직포를 더 포함하는 리튬-황 전지에 관한 것이다.
최근 휴대용 전자기기, 전기자동차 및 대용량 전력저장 시스템 등이 발전함에 따라 대용량 전지의 필요성이 대두되고 있다.
리튬-황 전지는 S-S 결합(Sulfur - sulfur bond)을 갖는 황 계열 물질을 양극 활물질로 사용하고, 리튬 금속을 음극 활물질로 사용하는 이차전지로, 양극 활물질의 주재료인 황은 자원이 매우 풍부하고, 독성이 없으며, 낮은 원자당 무게를 가지고 있는 장점이 있다.
또한, 리튬-황 전지의 이론 방전용량은 1672mAh/g-sulfur이며, 이론 에너지밀도가 2,600Wh/kg로서, 현재 연구되고 있는 다른 전지시스템의 이론 에너지밀도(Ni-MH 전지: 450Wh/kg, Li-FeS 전지: 480Wh/kg, Li-MnO2 전지: 1,000Wh/kg, Na-S 전지: 800Wh/kg)에 비하여 매우 높기 때문에 고에너지 밀도 특성을 갖는 전지로서 주목 받고 있다.
리튬-황 전지의 방전 반응 중 음극(Anode)에서는 리튬의 산화 반응이 발생하고, 양극(Cathode)에서는 황의 환원 반응이 발생한다. 방전 전의 황은 환형의 S8 구조를 가지고 있는데, 환원 반응(방전) 시 S-S 결합이 끊어지면서 S의 산화수가 감소하고, 산화 반응(충전) 시 S-S 결합이 다시 형성되면서 S의 산화수가 증가하는 산화-환원 반응을 이용하여 전기 에너지를 저장 및 생성한다.
이러한 반응 중 황은 환형의 S8에서 환원 반응에 의해 선형 구조의 리튬 폴리설파이드(Lithium polysulfide, Li2Sx, x = 8, 6, 4, 2)로 변환되게 되며, 결국 이러한 리튬 폴리설파이드가 완전히 환원되면 최종적으로 리튬 설파이드(Lithium sulfide, Li2S)가 생성되게 된다. 각각의 리튬 폴리설파이드로 환원되는 과정에 의해 리튬-황 전지의 방전 거동은 리튬 이온전지와는 달리 단계적으로 방전 전압을 나타내는 것이 특징이다.
Li2S8, Li2S6, Li2S4, Li2S2 등의 리튬 폴리설파이드 중에서, 특히 황의 산화수가 높은 리튬 폴리설파이드(Li2Sx, 보통 x > 4)는 친수성의 전해액에 쉽게 녹는다. 전해액에 녹은 리튬 폴리설파이드는 농도 차에 의해서 리튬 폴리설파이드가 생성된 양극으로부터 먼 쪽으로 확산되어 간다. 이렇게 양극으로부터 용출된 리튬 폴리설파이드는 양극 반응 영역 밖으로 유실되어 리튬 설파이드(Li2S)로의 단계적 환원이 불가능하다. 즉, 양극과 음극을 벗어나 용해된 상태로 존재하는 리튬 폴리설파이드는 전지의 충·방전 반응에 참여할 수 없게 되므로, 양극에서 전기화학 반응에 참여하는 황 물질의 양이 감소하게 되고, 결국 리튬-황 전지의 충전 용량 감소 및 에너지 감소를 일으키는 주요한 요인이 된다. 또한, 리튬 폴리설파이드의 용해로 전해액의 점도가 상승하게 되며, 이는 전지의 방전 과전압을 일으키는 요인이 된다. 뿐만 아니라 음극으로 확산한 리튬 폴리설파이드는 리튬 금속과 직접 반응하여 리튬 금속 음극을 부식시킨다.
이와 같이 리튬 폴리설파이드 용출은 전지의 용량 유지율 및 수명 특성에 악영향을 미치는 바, 리튬 폴리설파이드의 용출을 억제하기 위한 다양한 시도가 있었다. 일례로, 황을 흡착하는 성질을 지니는 첨가제를 양극 합제에 첨가하는 방법, 황 표면을 하이드록사이드, 코팅 원소의 옥시하이드록사이드, 코팅 원소의 옥시카보네이트 또는 코팅 원소의 하이드록시카보네이트를 포함하는 물질로 표면 처리하는 방법, 및 탄소재를 나노 구조체로 제조하여 여기에 리튬 폴리설파이드를 구속하는 방법을 들 수 있다.
그러나, 첨가제를 추가하는 방법의 경우 전도성 열화 문제 및 부반응의 위험성이 있으며, 표면 처리 기술의 경우 처리 공정 중 활물질 유실이 발생하고 비용적 측면에서 바람직하지 못한 단점이 있고, 탄소 나노 구조체의 경우는 제조 공정이 복잡한 단점이 있다.
또한, 이러한 종래 기술들은 리튬-황 전지의 용량 특성과 수명 특성을 크게 개선하지 못하는 문제점이 있었다.

상기 문제점을 해결하기 위하여 본 발명자들은 폴리설파이드의 용출을 방지할 수 있는 새로운 구조의 리튬-황 전지를 제조하였으며, 이렇게 제조된 리튬-황 전지가 우수한 용량 특성 및 수명 특성을 나타내는 것을 확인하여 본 발명을 완성하였다.
따라서, 본 발명의 목적은 리튬-황 전지를 제공하는 것이다.
상기 목적을 달성하기 위하여 본 발명은 양극; 음극; 분리막; 및 전해액을 포함하고,
상기 양극과 분리막 사이에 개재되는 고분자 부직포를 더 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬-황 전지를 제공한다.
또한, 본 발명은 양극; 음극; 분리막; 및 전해액을 포함하는 리튬-황 전지에 있어서,
상기 양극은 집전체 상에 형성된 양극 활물질층을 포함하고,
상기 양극 활물질층의 표면은 비수계 전해액을 포함하는 고분자 필름으로 피복되어 있으며, 상기 양극 활물질층 내의 공극은 상기 비수계 전해액을 포함하는 고분자 물질로 충전되어 있고,
상기 양극과 분리막 사이에는 고분자 부직포를 더 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬-황 전지를 제공한다.
본 발명에 따른 리튬-황 전지는 양극과 분리막 사이에 전해액을 함유할 수 있고, 전해액에 대하여 내구성이 우수한 고분자 부직포를 더 포함함으로써 양극에 전해액을 지속적으로 공급할 수 있으며, 폴리설파이드의 용출을 억제할 수 있다. 이에 따라, 본 발명에 따른 리튬-황 전지는 방전 과전압이 감소하며, 우수한 용량 및 수명 특성을 나타낸다.

본 발명은,

본 발명에서 상기 고분자 부직포는 전해액을 함유하고 있어 양극에 지속적으로 전해액을 공급하는 역할을 한다. 또한, 상기 고분자 부직포는 버퍼층으로서 기능하여, 전지의 충방전 시 발생하는 폴리설파이드를 가두어 두는 역할을 한다. 이에, 본 발명의 리튬-황 전지는 과전압 현상이 적으며, 양극 활물질의 손실이 감소되어 전지의 용량 특성 및 수명 특성이 우수하다.
이하, 본 발명이 속하는 기술 분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자가 용이하게 실시할 수 있도록 상세히 설명한다. 그러나 본 발명은 여러 가지 상이한 형태로 구현될 수 있으며, 여기에서 설명하는 실시예에 한정되지 않는다.
본 명세서에서 "폴리설파이드"는 "폴리설파이드 이온(Sx 2 -, x = 8, 6, 4, 2))" 및 "리튬 폴리설파이드(Li2Sx 또는 LiSx - x = 8, 6, 4, 2)"를 모두 포함하는 개념이다.
고분자 부직포
본 발명에서 고분자 부직포는 양극과 분리막 사이에 개재되어, 폴리설파이드를 가두어 둘 수 있는 버퍼층의 역할을 한다. 즉, 일반 분리막보다 기공도가 큰 부직포는 전해액을 다량으로 함유할 수 있고, 이로 인해 양극 쪽의 폴리설파이드의 농도가 희석되어, 폴리설파이드의 확산 현상이 억제된다. 따라서, 양극 활물질의 손실이 감소되며, 폴리설파이드의 용해에 따른 전해액 점도 상승으로부터 발생하는 과전압 현상을 방지할 수 있다.
또한, 상기 고분자 부직포는 양극 활물질에 지속적으로 전해액을 공급함으로써 과전압을 방지하며, 전지 성능을 향상시킨다.
이와 달리, 고분자 부직포가 음극과 분리막 사이에 개재되는 경우에, 상술한 폴리설파이드의 용출 억제 효과를 기대할 수 없고, 오히려 전극 표면에서 전류밀도가 높아져 리튬 덴드라이트의 성장을 촉진시킬 수 있다.
본 발명에서 사용되는 고분자 부직포는 리튬 이온 전도성이 우수하고, 전해액이 다량 함침될 수 있으며, 전해액이 함침된 상태에서의 전기 저항이 작은 물질인 것이 바람직하다.
또한, 상기 고분자 부직포는 내구성 확보를 위하여 전해액에 대한 내부식성이 우수하며, 전해액에 의한 스웰링(swelling) 현상이 적고 치수 안정성이 우수한 것이 바람직하다.
상기 고분자 부직포의 재질은 상기한 물성을 만족하는 것이면 제한 없이 사용될 수 있으나, 바람직하기로 폴리이미드, 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌, 폴리에틸렌옥사이드, 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트, 폴리비닐알코올, 폴리아크릴로니트릴 및 폴리우레탄으로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 1종 이상일 수 있으며, 보다 바람직하기로 폴리이미드를 사용한다.
폴리이미드는 방향족 디아민과 방향족 테트라카본산 2무수물로 합성된 고내열성 고분자로서, 젖음성(wettability)이 우수하여 전해액을 다량 함유할 수 있고, 전해액에 대한 내부식성 및 치수 안정성이 우수하므로 버퍼층으로서의 역할을 수행하기에 적합하다.
상기 고분자 부직포는 직경 100 내지 400 nm의 고분자 섬유가 서로 얽혀 3차원 네트워크 구조를 갖는 것으로서, 고분자 부직포는 시판되는 것을 사용하거나 직접 제조하여 사용할 수 있다.
상기 고분자 부직포를 제조하는 방법은 특별히 한정되지 않으며, 예를 들어 고분자 용액을 이용한 전기 방사(electro-spinning), 멜트 스피닝(melt spinning), 전기 블로윙(electro-blowing), 멜트-블로윙(melt-blowing, 복합방사, 분할사), 스펀-본디드(spun-bonded), 에어 레이드(air laid), 또는 웨트 레이드(wet laid) 방법을 통해 제조될 수 있다.
이때 상기 고분자는 중량평균분자량이 100,000 내지 6,000,000 g/mol인 것이 가공성 측면에서 바람직하다. 즉, 고분자의 분자량이 상기 범위를 만족할 때, 고분자 용액의 점도가 전기 방사법 등을 이용하기에 용이한 수준이 된다.
본 발명에서 상기 고분자 부직포의 두께는 10 내지 25 μm인 것이 바람직하다.
만일 고분자 부직포의 두께가 10 μm 미만이면 버퍼층으로서의 효과를 확보할 수 없어 바람직하지 않으며, 25 μm를 초과하면 전지에서 버퍼층이 차지하는 부피 및 질량 때문에 전지의 에너지 밀도가 떨어지게 되는 문제가 발생하므로 상기 범위 내에서 적절히 조절한다.
상기 고분자 부직포는 바람직하기로 60 내지 80%의 기공도를 가지며, 보다 바람직하기로 65 내지 75%의 기공도를 갖는다.
이때, 상기 기공도(porosity)는 기공률이라고도 하며, 다공성 물질의 전체 부피에 대하여 기공이 차지하는 부피의 비율을 의미한다. 기공도는 하기 수학식 1로 계산할 수 있다.

고분자 부직포의 기공도가 높을수록 전해액의 함침량을 높일 수 있으나, 상기한 바와 같이 10 내지 25 μm의 얇은 두께로 적용 시 기공도가 지나치게 높으면 기계적 강도가 떨어져 부스러질 수 있다. 따라서 공정성 및 내구성 확보를 위하여, 기공도는 상기 범위를 만족하는 것이 바람직하다.
상기 고분자 부직포의 기공 평균 입경은 0.2 내지 1 μm일 수 있으며, 바람직하기로 0.2 내지 0.5 μm이다. 상기 범위를 만족할 때 고분자 부직포의 두께 균일성이 향상되며, 균일한 이온 전달이 가능하다.
또한, 상기 고분자 부직포는 인장 강도가 10 내지 200 MPa일 수 있으나, 고분자 부직포의 기공도가 60 내지 80%인 경우는 15 내지 30 MPa인 것이 보다 바람직하다. 이러한 기계적 강도를 만족할 때, 전지 구동 중 내구성 및 치수 안정성을 확보할 수 있고, 공정성이 우수하다.
본 발명에서 상기 고분자 부직포는 하기 수학식 2로 표현되는 전해액 함침량이 150 내지 350 %인 것이 바람직하다.

고분자 부직포의 전해액 함침량이 상기 범위를 만족할 때, 양극 활물질에의 전해액 공급이 원활하게 이루어질 수 있어 전지 성능이 향상되며, 과전압을 감소시킬 수 있다.
양극
본 발명에 따른 리튬-황 전지의 양극은 양극 집전체 상에 형성된 양극 활물질을 포함한다.
상기 양극 집전체로는 기술분야에서 집전체로 사용될 수 있는 것이라면 모두 가능하고, 구체적으로 우수한 도전성을 갖는 발포 알루미늄, 발포 니켈 등을 사용하는 것이 바람직할 수 있다.
상기 양극 활물질은 황 원소(Elemental sulfur, S8), 황 계열 화합물 또는 이들의 혼합물을 포함할 수 있다. 상기 황 계열 화합물은 구체적으로, Li2Sn(n≥1), 유기황 화합물 또는 탄소-황 폴리머((C2Sx)n: x=2.5 ~ 50, n≥2) 등일 수 있다. 이들은 황 물질 단독으로는 전기전도성이 없기 때문에 도전재와 복합하여 적용한다.
상기 도전재는 다공성일 수 있다. 따라서, 상기 도전재로는 다공성 및 도전성을 갖는 것이라면 제한 없이 사용할 수 있으며, 예를 들어 다공성을 갖는 탄소계 물질을 사용할 수 있다. 이와 같은 탄소계 물질로는 카본 블랙, 그라파이트, 그래핀, 활성탄, 탄소 섬유 등을 사용할 수 있다. 또한, 금속 메쉬 등의 금속성 섬유; 구리, 은, 니켈, 알루미늄 등의 금속성 분말; 또는 폴리페닐렌 유도체 등의 유기 도전성 재료도 사용할 수 있다. 상기 도전성 재료들은 단독 또는 혼합하여 사용될 수 있다.
상기 양극은 양극 활물질과 도전재의 결합과 집전체에 대한 결합을 위하여 바인더를 더 포함할 수 있다. 상기 바인더는 열가소성 수지 또는 열경화성 수지를 포함할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌, 폴리테트라플루오로 에틸렌(PTFE), 폴리불화비닐리덴(PVDF), 스티렌-부타디엔 고무, 테트라플루오로에틸렌-퍼플루오로 알킬비닐에테르 공중합체, 불화비닐리덴-헥사 플루오로프로필렌 공중합체, 불화비닐리덴-클로로트리플루오로에틸렌 공중합체, 에틸렌-테트라플루오로에틸렌 공중합체, 폴리클로로트리플루오로에틸렌, 불화비닐리덴-펜타프루오로 프로필렌 공중합체, 프로필렌-테트라플루오로에틸렌 공중합체, 에틸렌-클로로트리플루오로에틸렌 공중합체, 불화비닐리덴-헥사플루오로프로필렌-테트라 플루오로에틸렌 공중합체, 불화비닐리덴-퍼플루오로메틸비닐에테르-테트라플루오로 에틸렌 공중합체, 에틸렌-아크릴산 공중합제 등을 단독 또는 혼합하여 사용할 수 있으나, 반드시 이들로 한정되지 않으며 당해 기술분야에서 바인더로 사용될 수 있는 것이라면 모두 가능하다.
상기와 같은 양극은 통상의 방법에 따라 제조될 수 있으며, 구체적으로는 양극 활물질과 도전재 및 바인더를 물 또는 유기 용매 상에서 혼합하여 제조한 양극 활물질층 형성용 조성물을 집전체 위에 도포 및 건조하고, 선택적으로 전극 밀도의 향상을 위하여 집전체에 압축 성형하여 제조할 수 있다. 이때 상기 유기 용매로는 양극 활물질, 바인더 및 도전재를 균일하게 분산시킬 수 있으며, 쉽게 증발되는 것을 사용하는 것이 바람직하다. 구체적으로는 N-메틸-2-피롤리돈, 아세토니트릴, 메탄올, 에탄올, 테트라히드로퓨란, 물, 이소프로필알코올 등을 들 수 있다.
한편, 양극의 전해액 함습 능력을 향상시키고 리튬 폴리설파이드의 유출을 방지하기 위하여, 본 발명에 따른 리튬-황 전지의 양극 활물질층 표면은 비수계 전해액을 포함하는 고분자 필름으로 피복될 수 있다. 또한, 상기 양극 활물질층 내의 공극은 상기 비수계 전해액을 포함하는 고분자 물질로 충전될 수 있다. 이때 사용되는 비수계 전해액은 리튬-황 전지에 사용되는 비수계 전해액과 동일할 수 있으며, 이에 대하여는 후술한다.
상기 고분자 필름 및 고분자 물질은 아크릴아미드, 디비닐벤젠, 부틸 아크릴레이트, 헥실 아크릴레이트, 트리메틸올프로판트리아크릴레이트, 부탄디올 디아크릴레이트, 부탄디올 디메타크릴레이트, 디알릴숙시네이트, 디알릴말레이트, 디알릴수베레이트, 에틸렌 글리콜 디아크릴레이트, 에틸렌 글리콜 디메타크릴레이트, 에틸렌글리콜 디비닐 에테르, 트리테트라에틸렌디메틸아크릴레이트(TTEGDA), 폴리(에틸렌글리콜) 디아크릴레이트(PEGDA), 폴리에틸렌글리콜 디메타크릴레이트(PEGDMA), 폴리(에틸렌글리콜) 디비닐 에테르, 및 디글리시딜 에스테르로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 적어도 하나 이상의 모노머 및 상기 비수계 전해액을 포함하는 조성물이 중합되어 형성된 것이 바람직하나, 이들로 제한되는 것은 아니다.
상기 고분자 필름 및 상기 고분자 물질을 형성하기 위한 조성물은 상기 모노머 10 ~ 50중량% 및 비수계 전해질 50~ 90중량%를 포함하는 것이 바람직하다. 상기 모노머의 더욱 바람직한 함량은 10 ~ 30중량%이다. 상기 모노머의 함량이 10중량% 미만이면 가교시 가교도(degree of crosslinking)가 너무 낮아서 가교의 특성을 충분히 발현될 수 없으며, 전해액 함습 능력과 기계적 특성이 불량한 문제점이 있고, 50중량%를 초과하면 양극판의 내부저항이 증가하며 고율 충방전 시 용량 감소의 원인으로 작용한다. 상기 모노머의 중량 평균 분자량은 200 ~ 2,000 g/mol인 것이 바람직하고, 400 ~ 1,000 g/mol이면 더욱 바람직하다. 상기 모노머의 분자량이 200 g/mol 미만이면 가교 후 고분자의 분자 구조 내에 가교점 밀도가 너무 높아서 리튬 염 또는 양극활물질의 이동이 자유롭지 못할 염려가 있고, 2,000을 초과하면 가교 후 고분자 분자구조내의 가교점 밀도가 너무 낮아 전해액 함습 능력이 작아질 염려가 있다.
상기 고분자 필름의 코팅 두께는 0.5 내지 10 μm 인 것이 바람직하다. 코팅 두께가 0.5 μm 미만이면 코팅 두께가 너무 얇아서 전해액 함습 능력을 발휘하기 어렵고, 10 μm 을 초과하면 코팅 두께가 너무 두꺼워 계면 저항이 증가하는 문제점이 있다.
상기 고분자 필름을 포함하는 양극의 제조 방법은 특별히 한정하지 않으나, 일례로 다음과 같은 방법에 의할 수 있다.
집전체 상에 형성된 양극 활물질층을 형성하여 양극을 제조하고, 양극 활물질층 상에 상기 고분자 필름 및 상기 고분자 물질을 형성하기 위한 조성물을 코팅한다. 이때, 상기 양극 활물질층의 공극 내에도 상기 조성물이 침투될 수 있도록 한다. 상기 코팅 방법은 딥 코팅, 롤러 코팅, 스핀 코팅, 진공 함침 등이 사용될 수 있으나, 이에 제한되지 않는다.
다음으로, 상기 조성물이 코팅된 양극에 히트 프레스(heat press), 자외선, 전자빔, X선 또는 γ선 처리를 가하여 상기 모노머를 중합시킨다. 상기 모노머의 중합을 히트 프레스에 의하여 실시하는 경우, 온도는 50 ~ 90℃, 히트 프레스 시간은 20 ~ 80초로 조절되는 것이 바람직하다. 본 단계에서, 상기 양극 활물질층의 표면은 비수계 전해질을 포함하는 고분자 필름 층으로 피복되고, 상기 양극 활물질층 내의 공극은 상기 비수계 전해질을 포함하는 고분자 물질로 충전된다.
이와 같이 고분자 필름으로 피복된 황 양극을 사용할 경우, 양극의 전해액 함습 능력이 향상되고 리튬 폴리설파이드의 유출이 감소하므로, 양극 활물질의 이용률을 높일 수 있고 리튬 폴리설파이드로 인한 리튬 금속 음극의 부반응을 억제할 수 있다.
음극
본 발명에 따른 리튬-황 전지의 음극은 음극 집전체 상에 형성된 음극 활물질을 포함한다.
상기 음극 집전체는 구체적으로 구리, 스테인리스스틸, 티타늄, 은, 팔라듐, 니켈, 이들의 합금 및 이들의 조합으로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 것일 수 있다. 상기 스테인리스스틸은 카본, 니켈, 티탄 또는 은으로 표면 처리될 수 있으며, 상기 합금으로는 알루미늄-카드뮴 합금이 사용될 수 있다. 그 외에도 소성 탄소, 도전재로 표면 처리된 비전도성 고분자, 또는 전도성 고분자 등이 사용될 수도 있다.
상기 음극 활물질로는 리튬 이온(Li+)을 가역적으로 흡장(Intercalation) 또는 방출(Deintercalation)할 수 있는 물질, 리튬 이온과 반응하여 가역적으로 리튬 함유 화합물을 형성할 수 있는 물질, 리튬 금속 또는 리튬 합금을 사용할 수 있다. 상기 리튬 이온(Li+)을 가역적으로 흡장 또는 방출할 수 있는 물질은 예컨대 결정질 탄소, 비정질 탄소 또는 이들의 혼합물일 수 있다. 상기 리튬 이온(Li+)과 반응하여 가역적으로 리튬 함유 화합물을 형성할 수 있는 물질은 예를 들어, 산화주석, 티타늄나이트레이트 또는 실리콘일 수 있다. 상기 리튬 합금은 예를 들어, 리튬(Li)과 나트륨(Na), 칼륨(K), 루비듐(Rb), 세슘(Cs), 프랑슘(Fr), 베릴륨(Be), 마그네슘(Mg), 칼슘(Ca), 스트론튬(Sr), 바륨(Ba), 라듐(Ra), 알루미늄(Al) 및 주석(Sn)으로 이루어지는 군에서 선택되는 금속의 합금일 수 있다.
상기 음극은 음극 활물질과 도전재의 결합과 집전체에 대한 결합을 위하여 바인더를 더 포함할 수 있으며, 구체적으로 상기 바인더는 앞서 양극의 바인더에서 설명한 바와 동일하다.
또한 상기 음극은 리튬 금속 또는 리튬 합금일 수 있다. 비제한적인 예로, 음극은 리튬 금속의 박막일 수도 있으며, 리튬과 Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr, Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ra, Al 및 Sn 군으로부터 선택되는 1종 이상의 금속과의 합금일 수 있다.
전해액
본 발명에 따른 리튬-황 전지의 전해액은 리튬염을 함유하는 비수계 전해액으로서 리튬염과 용매로 구성된다.
상기 리튬염은 비수계 유기 용매에 쉽게 용해될 수 있는 물질로서, 예컨대, LiCl, LiBr, LiI, LiClO4, LiBF4, LiB10Cl10, LiB(Ph)4 , LiC4BO8, LiPF6, LiCF3SO3, LiCF3CO2, LiAsF6, LiSbF6, LiAlCl4, LiSO3CH3, LiSO3CF3, LiSCN, LiC(CF3SO2)3, LiN(CF3SO2)2, LiN(C2F5SO2)2, LiN(SO2F)2, 클로로 보란 리튬, 저급 지방족 카르본산 리튬, 테트라 페닐 붕산 리튬 및 리튬 이미드로 이루어진 군으로부터 하나 이상일 수 있다.
상기 리튬염의 농도는, 전해액 혼합물의 정확한 조성, 염의 용해도, 용해된 염의 전도성, 전지의 충전 및 방전 조건, 작업 온도 및 리튬-황 전지 분야에 공지된 다른 요인과 같은 여러 요인에 따라, 0.1 내지 4.0 M, 바람직하기로 0.5 내지 2.0 M일 수 있다. 만약, 리튬염의 농도가 상기 범위 미만이면 전해액의 전도도가 낮아져서 전지 성능이 저하될 수 있고, 상기 범위 초과이면 전해액의 점도가 증가하여 리튬 이온(Li+)의 이동성이 감소될 수 있으므로 상기 범위 내에서 적정 농도를 선택하는 것이 바람직하다.
상기 비수계 유기 용매는 리튬염을 잘 용해시킬 수 있는 물질로서, 바람직하기로 N-메틸-2-피롤리돈, 프로필렌 카르보네이트, 에틸렌 카르보네이트, 부틸렌 카르보네이트, 디메틸 카르보네이트, 디에틸 카르보네이트, 에틸메틸 카보네이트, 감마-부틸로 락톤, 1,2-디메톡시 에탄, 1,2-디에톡시 에탄, 1-에톡시-2-메톡시 에탄, 디에틸렌글리콜 디메틸에테르, 트리에틸렌글리콜 디메틸에테르, 테트라에틸렌글리콜 디메틸에테르, 테트라히드록시 프랑(franc), 2-메틸 테트라하이드로푸란, 디메틸술폭시드, 1,3-디옥솔란, 4-메틸-1,3-디옥센, 디에틸에테르, 포름아미드, 디메틸포름아미드, 아세토니트릴, 니트로메탄, 포름산 메틸, 초산메틸, 인산 트리에스테르, 트리메톡시 메탄, 디옥솔란 유도체, 설포란, 메틸 설포란, 1,3-디메틸-2-이미다졸리디논, 프로필렌 카르보네이트 유도체, 테트라하이드로푸란 유도체, 에테르, 프로피온산 메틸, 프로피온산 에틸 등의 비양자성 유기 용매가 사용될 수 있으며, 이들 중 하나 또는 둘 이상의 혼합 용매 형태로 사용될 수 있다.
본 발명의 리튬-황 전지용 비수계 전해액은 첨가제로서 질산 또는 아질산계 화합물을 더 포함할 수 있다. 상기 질산 또는 아질산계 화합물은 리튬 전극에 안정적인 피막을 형성하고 충방전 효율을 향상시키는 효과가 있다. 이러한 질산 또는 아질산계 화합물로는 본 발명에서 특별히 한정하지는 않으나, 질산리튬(LiNO3), 질산칼륨(KNO3), 질산세슘(CsNO3), 질산바륨(Ba(NO3)2), 질산암모늄(NH4NO3), 아질산리튬(LiNO2), 아질산칼륨(KNO2), 아질산세슘(CsNO2), 아질산암모늄(NH4NO2) 등의 무기계 질산 또는 아질산 화합물; 메틸 니트레이트, 디알킬 이미다졸륨 니트레이트, 구아니딘 니트레이트, 이미다졸륨 니트레이트, 피리디늄 니트레이트, 에틸 니트라이트, 프로필 니트라이트, 부틸 니트라이트, 펜틸 니트라이트, 옥틸 니트라이트 등의 유기계 질산 또는 아질산 화합물; 니트로메탄, 니트로프로판, 니트로부탄, 니트로벤젠, 디니트로벤젠, 니트로 피리딘, 디니트로피리딘, 니트로톨루엔, 디니트로톨루엔 등의 유기 니트로 화합물 및 이들의 조합으로 이루어진 군에서 선택된 1종이 가능하며, 바람직하게는 질산리튬을 사용한다.
또한, 상기 비수계 전해액은 충방전 특성, 난연성 등의 개선을 목적으로 기타 첨가제를 더 포함할 수 있다. 상기 첨가제의 예시로는 피리딘, 트리에틸포스파이트, 트리에탄올아민, 환상 에테르, 에틸렌 디아민, n-글라임(glyme), 헥사 인산 트리 아마이드, 니트로벤젠 유도체, 유황, 퀴논 이민 염료, N-치환 옥사졸리디논, N,N-치환 이미다졸리딘, 에틸렌 글리콜 디알킬 에테르, 암모늄염, 피롤, 2-메톡시 에탄올, 삼염화 알루미늄, 플루오로에틸렌 카보네이트(FEC), 프로펜 설톤(PRS), 비닐렌 카보네이트(VC) 등을 들 수 있다.
분리막
본 발명에 따른 리튬-황 전지의 분리막은 전극을 물리적으로 분리하는 기능을 갖는 물리적인 분리막으로서, 통상의 분리막으로 사용되는 것이라면 특별한 제한 없이 사용 가능하며, 특히 전해액의 이온 이동에 대하여 저 저항이면서 전해액 함습 능력이 우수한 것이 바람직하다.
또한, 상기 분리막은 양극과 음극을 서로 분리 또는 절연시키면서 양극과 음극 사이에 리튬 이온의 수송을 가능하게 한다. 이러한 분리막은 기공도 30~50%의 다공성이고, 비전도성 또는 절연성인 물질로 이루어질 수 있다.
구체적으로는 다공성 고분자 필름, 예를 들어 에틸렌 단독중합체, 프로필렌 단독중합체, 에틸렌/부텐 공중합체, 에틸렌/헥센 공중합체 및 에틸렌/메타크릴레이트 공중합체 등과 같은 폴리올레핀계 고분자로 제조한 다공성 고분자 필름을 사용할 수 있고, 고융점의 유리 섬유 등으로 된 부직포를 사용할 수 있다. 이 중 바람직하기로 다공성 고분자 필름을 사용한다.
만일 버퍼층 및 분리막으로 모두 고분자 필름을 사용하게 되면, 전해액 함침량 및 이온 전도 특성이 감소하고, 과전압 감소 및 용량 특성 개선 효과가 미미하게 된다. 반대로, 모두 부직포 소재를 사용할 경우는 기계적 강성이 확보되지 못하여 전지 단락의 문제가 발생한다. 그러나, 필름형의 분리막과 고분자 부직포 버퍼층을 함께 사용하면, 버퍼층의 채용으로 인한 전지 성능 개선 효과와 함께 기계적 강도 또한 확보할 수 있다.
본 발명의 바람직한 일 실시예에 따르면 에틸렌 단독중합체(폴리에틸렌) 고분자 필름을 분리막으로, 폴리이미드 부직포를 버퍼층으로 사용한다. 이때, 상기 폴리에틸렌 고분자 필름은 두께가 10 내지 25μm, 기공도가 40 내지 50%인 것이 바람직하다.
본 발명에 따른 리튬-황 전지의 외형은 특별한 제한이 없으나, 캔을 사용한 원통형, 각형, 파우치(Pouch)형 또는 코인(Coin)형 등이 될 수 있다.
이하 본 발명의 이해를 돕기 위하여 바람직한 실시예를 제시하나, 하기 실시예는 본 발명을 예시하는 것일 뿐 본 발명의 범주 및 기술사상 범위 내에서 다양한 변경 및 수정이 가능함은 당업자에게 있어서 명백한 것이며, 이러한 변경 및 수정이 첨부된 특허청구범위에 속하는 것도 당연한 것이다.
[실시예]
제조예 1: 리튬-황 전지의 제조
하기 제조방법에 의하여 양극과 분리막 사이에 고분자 부직포를 포함하거나 포함하지 않는 리튬-황 전지를 제조하였다.
(1) 실시예 1: 폴리이미드(PI) 부직포를 포함하는 리튬-황 전지의 제조
물을 용매로 하고, 황, 슈퍼피(Super-P, SP), 도전재 및 바인더를 볼밀로 혼합하여 양극 활물질층 형성용 조성물을 제조하였다. 이때 도전재로는 덴카블랙을, 바인더로는 SBR과 CMC의 혼합 형태의 바인더를 사용하였으며, 혼합 비율은 중량비로 황 및 SP(9:1비율):도전재:바인더가 90:10:10가 되도록 하였다. 제조한 양극활물질층 형성용 조성물을 알루미늄 집전체에 도포한 후 건조하여 양극을 제조하였다(양극의 에너지 밀도: 2.5 mAh/㎠).
상기 제조한 양극과 음극을 대면하도록 위치시킨 후, 두께 20μm 기공도 45%의 폴리에틸렌 분리막을 상기 양극과 음극 사이에 개재하고, 두께 20μm, 기공도 70%의 PI 부직포를 상기 분리막과 양극 사이에 끼워 넣었다.
그 후, 케이스 내부로 전해질을 주입하여 리튬 황 전지를 제조하였다. 이때 상기 전해질은, 디옥솔란(DOL) 및 디메틸렌글리콜디메틸에테르 (DEGDME) (혼합 부피비=6:4)로 이루어진 유기용매에 1M 농도의 리튬 비스(플루오로설포닐)이미드(LiFSI)와 1 wt%의 LiNO3를 용해시켜 제조하였다.
(2) 실시예 2: 폴리아크릴로니트릴(PAN) 부직포를 포함하는 리튬-황 전지의 제조
분리막과 양극 사이에 두께 20μm, 기공도 72%의 PAN 부직포를 개재시킨 것을 제외하고는 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 리튬-황 전지를 제조하였다.
(3) 비교예 1: 리튬-황 전지의 제조
실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로, PI 부직포를 포함하지 않는 리튬-황 전지를 제조하였다.
(4) 비교예 2: 폴리에틸렌( PE ) 분리막을 이중으로 포함하는 리튬-황 전지의 제조
PI부직포 대신 기공도 45%의 PE분리막을 개재시킨 것을 제외하고는 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 리튬-황 전지를 제조하였다.
상기 실시예 1, 2 및 비교예 1,2 에서 사용한 PI부직포, PAN 부직포, 및 PE분리막의 기공도 및 전해액 함침량을 하기 표 1에 나타내었다.

실험예 1: 전지 성능 평가
상기 제조예 1에서 제조된 각 전지에 대하여 전지 성능 평가를 수행하였다. 이때, 각 전지는 0.1C로 2.5회 충방전한 다음, 0.3C 충전/0.5C 방전으로 구동 조건을 설정하였다.
도 1에 초기 방전 프로파일을 나타내었다. 도 1을 참조하면, 버퍼층이 없는 비교예 1에 비하여 실시예 1 및 2의 초기 방전 용량이 우수하고, 방전 과전압은 낮은 것을 확인할 수 있다. 특히, PI 부직포를 사용한 실시예 1이 PAN 부직포를 사용한 실시예 2에 비하여 좋은 결과를 나타내었다. 한편, 비교예 2의 데이터를 참고하면, PE 분리막을 하나 더 개재시킨 경우 초기 방전용량이 다소 상승하나, 본 발명의 고분자 부직포에 비해서는 그 효과가 미미한 것을 확인할 수 있다.
도 2에 도시한 50 사이클 동안의 충방전 프로파일을 살펴보면, 버퍼층이 없는 비교예 1의 경우 20 사이클 이후 쿨롱 효율 및 방전 용량이 급격히 떨어지는 것으로 나타났고, PE 분리막을 하나 더 개재시킨 비교예 2의 경우도 30 사이클 이후 전지 성능 저하가 일어나는 것으로 확인되었다.
반면, PI 부직포를 포함하는 실시예 1의 경우 50 사이클까지 안정적이고 우수한 사이클 특성을 나타내는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 이는 PI 부직포에 의해 폴리설파이드의 용출이 효과적으로 억제되어 활물질의 손실이 줄고, 황 이용률이 증대되었기 때문으로 판단할 수 있다.
상기 결과로부터, 양극과 분리막 사이에 개재되는 고분자 부직포로는 전해액에 대하여 내부식성이 강한 PI 부직포가 적합하며, 이러한 고분자 부직포를 버퍼층으로 포함함으로써 리튬-황 전지의 용량 및 수명 특성을 향상시킬 수 있음을 확인할 수 있다.

Claims (10)

  1. 양극; 음극; 분리막; 및 전해액을 포함하고,
    상기 양극과 분리막 사이에 개재되는 고분자 부직포를 더 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬-황 전지.
  2. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 고분자 부직포의 재질은 폴리이미드, 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌, 폴리에틸렌옥사이드, 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트, 폴리비닐알코올, 폴리아크릴로니트릴 및 폴리우레탄으로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 1종 이상인 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬-황 전지.
  3. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 고분자 부직포의 두께는 10 내지 25 μm인 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬-황 전지.
  4. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 고분자 부직포는 하기 수학식 1로 표현되는 기공도가 60 내지 80%인 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬-황 전지.

  5. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 고분자 부직포는 인장 강도가 10 내지 200 MPa인 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬-황 전지.
  6. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 고분자 부직포는 하기 수학식 2로 표현되는 전해액 함침량이 150 내지 350 %인 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬-황 전지.

    (상기 수학식 2에서, M1은 고분자 부직포의 중량이고, M2는 전해액의 중량이다)
  7. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 고분자 부직포는 중량평균분자량 100,000 내지 6,000,000 g/mol인 고분자로 이루어진 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬-황 전지.
  8. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 고분자 부직포는 직경 100 내지 400 nm의 고분자 섬유로 이루어진 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬-황 전지.
  9. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 양극은 집전체 상에 형성된 양극 활물질층을 포함하고,
    상기 양극 활물질층의 표면은 비수계 전해액을 포함하는 고분자 필름으로 피복되어 있으며, 상기 양극 활물질층 내의 공극은 상기 비수계 전해액을 포함하는 고분자 물질로 충전되어 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬-황 전지.
  10. 제9항에 있어서,
    상기 고분자 필름 및 상기 고분자 물질은 아크릴아미드, 디비닐벤젠, 부틸 아크릴레이트, 헥실 아크릴레이트, 트리메틸올프로판트리아크릴레이트, 부탄디올 디아크릴레이트, 부탄디올 디메타크릴레이트, 디알릴숙시네이트, 디알릴말레이트, 디알릴수베레이트, 에틸렌 글리콜 디아크릴레이트, 에틸렌 글리콜 디메타크릴레이트, 에틸렌글리콜 디비닐 에테르, 트리테트라에틸렌디메틸아크릴레이트(TTEGDA), 폴리(에틸렌글리콜) 디아크릴레이트(PEGDA), 폴리에틸렌글리콜 디메타크릴레이트(PEGDMA), 폴리(에틸렌글리콜) 디비닐 에테르, 및 디글리시딜 에스테르로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 적어도 하나 이상의 모노머 및 상기 비수계 전해액을 포함하는 조성물이 중합되어 형성된 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬-황 전지.
