- the energy consumption of the pump can be kept low by passing through the groove cross section that is much larger than the gap in the electrode, even if the liquid flow resistance in the electrode is high.
- the electrolytic solution flows along the surface of the electrode, it is difficult to let it flow in the thickness direction of the electrode, and it is also difficult to make the flow of the electrolytic solution in the electrode uniform. There was a problem.
- Patent Document 3 in the flow-by type redox flow battery, in order to reduce the conductive resistance with a thin and high-density electrode, and to facilitate the liquid flow in the thickness direction of the electrode, A technique for forming a through hole in the thickness direction of an electrode has been proposed.
- the electrode formed with the groove described in Patent Document 1 has an effect of reducing the liquid flow resistance, the groove is formed in parallel with the liquid flow. For this reason, the liquid preferentially flows into the groove, and the surface of the carbon fiber other than the groove is hardly used, and the effect of improving the charge / discharge performance is not sufficient.
- Patent Document 3 Although the technique of Patent Document 3 can be expected to improve the conductivity and reduce the fluid flow resistance, the electrode surface area is reduced due to the thin electrode, so that the contact with the electrolyte is not sufficient.

- the detailed description of the electrode used in the liquid-permeable device of the present invention will be described using an example of an electrode used in a typical redox flow battery as the liquid-permeable device described later.
- the electrode used in the redox flow battery of the present invention is essentially made of a carbon fiber nonwoven fabric.
- the carbon fiber nonwoven fabric is a carbon fiber precursor fiber cut into several tens of mm (generally 38 mm to 102 mm) and then processed into a web shape, and further entangled with each other by needle punching or water jet processing. It is a nonwoven fabric obtained by carbonizing a carbon fiber precursor fiber nonwoven fabric obtained by heating and bonding fibers together or bonding fibers together with a binder. It may consist essentially of carbon fiber nonwoven fabric, but it may consist only of carbon fiber nonwoven fabric, but additional modification that does not impede the function as an electrode, such as carbon particles and other conductive additives, resin binder carbide, etc. Means that it may be
- the carbon fiber precursor fiber examples include rayon fiber, acrylic fiber, and lignin fiber, and acrylic fiber (polyacrylonitrile fiber) is preferable from the viewpoint of mechanical strength and cost.
- flame resistant yarn obtained by heat-treating acrylic fiber at 200 to 300 ° C. in air may be used. When the flame resistant yarn is not used, it is preferable to perform the flame resistance treatment after forming the carbon fiber precursor fiber on the nonwoven fabric.
- the carbon fiber precursor fiber nonwoven fabric thus obtained is heat-treated at 1000 to 3000 ° C. in an inert atmosphere to obtain a carbon fiber nonwoven fabric.
- the electrolyte solution needs to be sufficiently in contact with the surface of the carbon fiber to be an electrode, and the wettability of the electrolyte solution is improved by modifying the carbon fiber surface. You may let them.
- a method for modifying the carbon fiber surface in this case, air oxidation and electrolytic oxidation are excellent in terms of processability and cost, and can be preferably used.
- the temperature of the heat treatment and the modification of the carbon fiber surface are appropriately set from the viewpoint of battery performance and durability.
- Basis weight of the electrode used in the redox flow battery of the present invention is preferably 50 ⁇ 1000g / m 2, more preferably 100 ⁇ 500g / m 2. 50 g / m 2 surface area of the electrode tends to lack Below, exceeds 1000 g / m 2, the productivity in order to decrease.
- the electrode used in the redox flow battery of the present invention has a thickness exceeding 0.40 mm.
- the thickness of the electrode is preferably 0.5 mm or more, and more preferably exceeds 0.60 mm.
- the upper limit of the thickness of the electrode is not particularly limited, but if it is too thick, the conductive resistance tends to increase, so that it is preferably 10.0 mm or less, and more preferably 6.0 mm or less.
- the thickness of the electrode in this specification is the thickness measured in the state which pressurized the area more than (phi) 5 mm with the surface pressure of 0.15 MPa.
- the electrode of this invention can be laminated
- the electrode used for the redox flow battery of the present invention preferably has a density of 0.40 g / cm 3 or more.
- the density is high, high conductivity is obtained and the amount of electrodes in the cell is increased.
- liquid flow is likely to be non-uniform, but by applying the homogenization technology of the present invention, high density and liquid flow uniformity can be achieved. Both are possible. 0.50 g / cm 3 or more is more preferable, and 0.60 g / cm 3 or more is more preferable.
- the first aspect of the electrode used in the redox flow battery of the present invention is one in which a through hole is arranged in the electrode.
- the through hole can be formed by machining or laser processing using a perforated member. Such processing may be performed on the carbon fiber precursor fiber nonwoven fabric or on the carbon fiber nonwoven fabric after heat treatment.
- a perforated member having a tapered tip is pressed through a carbon fiber precursor fiber nonwoven fabric to form a through hole, damage to the carbon fiber precursor fiber and carbon fiber is unlikely to occur, and high mechanical properties are obtained. preferable.
- the through hole may be any one that can recognize the through hole separately from the voids of the carbon fiber nonwoven fabric itself when a field of view larger than a square having a side of 0.5 mm is observed with an optical microscope with transmitted light.
- the through-holes are formed in a regular pattern, the transmitted light that passes through the voids of the carbon fiber nonwoven fabric itself when the image taken by observing the carbon fiber nonwoven fabric with a transmitted light through a microscope is analyzed. And the transmitted light passing through the through-hole are observed together, and the through-hole is also formed by having a plurality of peaks in the frequency (area-based) distribution of the opening diameter of the gap (area where the transmitted light is observed). It can be confirmed that it is formed.
- the second aspect of the electrode used in the redox flow battery of the present invention is one in which non-through holes are arranged on one side or both sides.
- a non-through hole is formed on one side, because a flat surface on which no non-through hole is formed can be arranged so as to be in contact with the current collector plate.
- non-through holes are formed on both surfaces, because the amount of electrolytic solution that moves from one surface to the other surface increases, and the liquid passage state can be made uniform in the thickness direction.
- the depth of the non-through hole is preferably over 400 ⁇ m, more preferably over 500 ⁇ m, and more preferably over 600 ⁇ m. This is because the effect of the present invention is reduced when the depth of the non-through hole is 400 ⁇ m or less.
- the depth of the non-through hole in this specification is a depth measured in a state where an area of ⁇ 5 mm or more of the non-through hole forming surface is pressed with a surface pressure of 0.15 MPa.
- the ratio of the depth of the non-through holes to the thickness is preferably 0.5 or more, and more preferably 0.6 or more. This is because the larger the ratio, the greater the effect of uniformizing the liquid flow.
- the upper limit of the depth is not particularly limited, but by setting it to 0.9 or less, the effect of reducing the conductive resistance of the surface on which the non-through hole is not formed is increased.
- Such a non-through hole can be formed by performing machining or laser processing using a piercing member and controlling (not penetrating) the piercing depth, similarly to the through hole.
- Such processing may be performed on the carbon fiber precursor fiber nonwoven fabric or on the carbon fiber nonwoven fabric after heat treatment.
- the peripheral edge portion of the hole refers to the boundary (edge portion) between the non-hole surface and the hole.
- Non-through holes are macroscopic depressions that are apart from the microscopic irregularities that appear due to the fibers of the carbon fiber nonwoven fabric when a field of view larger than a square with a side of 0.5 mm is observed with an incident light. Anything can be recognized.
- the formation of through-holes is, for example, from the average opening diameter (average opening diameter of the voids of the carbon fiber nonwoven fabric itself) obtained by image analysis of an image taken by observing the carbon fiber nonwoven fabric with transmitted light under a microscope. Also, the thickness of the electrode in a state in which the hole forming surface side is scanned using a shape measurement microscope (epi-illumination light), the image is captured, the inclination is corrected using the shape analysis software, and the surface pressure is pressurized at 0.15 MPa. This can be determined by the fact that the average opening diameter of the non-through holes measured as a non-through hole is smaller than the surface corresponding to the surface.
- the opening diameter is a diameter calculated from the opening area on the assumption that the shape of the hole is a circle.
- the electrode used for the redox flow battery of this invention may be what formed both the through-hole and the non-through-hole.
- the opening diameter of the through hole in the first aspect or the non-through hole in the second aspect is preferably 50 ⁇ m or more, more preferably 200 ⁇ m or more, and even more preferably 500 ⁇ m or more.
- the opening diameter is preferably 10 mm or less, more preferably 5 mm or less, and further preferably 3 mm or less. The smaller the opening diameter, the easier it is to reduce the conductive resistance.
- the opening diameter referred to here is a diameter calculated from the opening area on the assumption that the shape is a circle. However, the shape is not limited to a circle, and a square, a rectangle, or the like can be selected.
- the area ratio (opening area / total area) of the holes in a plan view of the electrode is preferably 5% or more, and more preferably 10% or more. Further, the area ratio of the holes (opening / total area) is preferably 90% or less, and more preferably 50% or less. If it is less than 5%, the effect of the present invention is difficult to obtain, and if it exceeds 90%, a place that cannot be pressed against the current collector plate is likely to occur. This is because the conductive resistance tends to increase in any of the cases where the surface forming the surface is in contact with the current collector plate.
- the area ratio of the holes is obtained by scanning the hole forming surface side of the electrode using a shape measuring microscope, capturing an image, correcting the inclination using shape analysis software, and pressurizing at a surface pressure of 0.15 MPa. It can be obtained by calculating the area ratio of the portion having a thickness thinner than the surface corresponding to the thickness of the electrode.
- the electrode used in the redox flow battery of the present invention can be used in either a flow-through type cell or a flow-by type cell, but it is one of the preferred embodiments that the electrode is used in a flow-through type cell.
- the flow-through type refers to a method in which an electrolyte is supplied from an end face of an electrode to an electrode sandwiched between an ion exchange membrane and a current collector plate without a groove, and the electrolyte is passed in a planar direction inside the electrode.
- the electrolyte passes through the electrode, it spreads in a direction other than the liquid feeding direction at the hole formed in the electrode, thereby preventing localization of the liquid passing path.
- the liquid flow can be made uniform.
- the liquid passing path depends on the gap size and arrangement of the electrodes, the liquid passing path is likely to be localized, and the liquid passing through the electrode used in the redox flow battery of the present invention is uniform. The effect of conversion is remarkably obtained.
- the flow-by type is also a preferred embodiment.
- the flow-by type refers to a method in which an electrolyte is supplied to and passed through an electrode sandwiched between a current collector plate having an ion exchange membrane and a groove from the groove of the current collector plate.
- the electrolytic solution easily moves in the thickness direction of the electrode.
- the flow-by-type redox flow battery moves the electrolyte solution from groove to groove of the current collector plate.
- the electrolyte solution is not easily moved in the thickness direction, and is used in the redox flow battery of the present invention.
- the effect of making the liquid flow uniform by the electrode to be obtained is remarkably obtained.
- the shape of the current collector plate with grooves used in the flow-by type redox flow battery should be the shape known for redox flow batteries or solid polymer fuel cells, such as parallel, column, serpentine, and comb teeth. Can do.
- Measurement Example 2 Shape of the hole Using a shape measurement microscope (VR-3050, manufactured by Keyence Corporation), scan the image from the hole formation surface side of the electrode with a field of view 25 times larger, and use shape analysis software Inclination was corrected, and the height profile was displayed so as to pass through the bottom of the hole to obtain a representative value of the depth. Moreover, the area ratio of the part thinner than the surface corresponding to the thickness of the electrode calculated in Measurement Example 1 was obtained. The measurement was carried out at 9 places and the average value thereof was used.
