Description

연료전지 스택
본 발명은 연료전지 스택에 관한 것이다.
본 출원은 2017년 1월 31일자 한국 특허 출원 제10-2017-0013514호에 기초한 우선권의 이익을 주장하며, 해당 한국 특허 출원의 문헌에 개시된 모든 내용은 본 명세서의 일부로서 포함된다.
일반적으로 연료전지(fuel cell)는 연료와 산화제의 전기 화학반응을 통해 전기에너지를 발생시키는 에너지 변환 장치이며, 연료가 계속적으로 공급되는 한 지속적으로 발전이 가능한 장점이 있다.
수소 이온을 투과시킬 수 있는 고분자막을 전해질로 사용하는 고분자 전해질 연료전지(Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell, PEMFC)는 다른 형태의 연료전지에 비해 낮은 약 100℃ 이하의 작동온도를 가지며, 에너지 전환 효율과 출력밀도가 높고 응답특성이 빠른 장점이 있다. 뿐만 아니라, 소형화가 가능하기 때문에 휴대용, 차량용 및 가정용 전원장치로 제공될 수 있다.
고분자 전해질 연료전지 스택은 복수 개의 연료전지 셀이 적층된 구조를 갖고, 각각의 연료전지 셀은 고분자 물질로 구성된 전해질막을 중심으로 애노드(anode)와 캐소드(cathode)가 각각 도포되어 형성된 전극층을 구비하는 막-전극 접합체(Membrane Electrode Assembly, MEA), 반응 기체들을 반응 영역 전체에 걸쳐 고르게 분포시키고, 애노드 전극의 산화반응에 의해 발생된 전자를 캐소드 전극 쪽으로 전달하는 역할의 가스 확산층(Gas Diffusion Layer, GDL), 반응 기체들을 가스 확산층으로 공급하고, 전기화학반응에 의해 발생된 물을 외부로 배출시키는 분리판(bipolar plate), 분리판 또는 막-전극 접합체의 반응 영역 외주에 배치되어 반응 기체 및 냉각수의 누출을 방지하는, 탄성을 갖는 소재의 가스켓(gasket)을 포함할 수 있다.
종래 반응가스 채널 및 냉각수 채널이 양면에 각각 마련된 분리판은 고출력 영역에서 연료전지 내 물전달 분균형 및 반응 면 내 반응가스의 높은 물질 전달 저항(통상 확산 저항)의 기술적 문제를 갖는다.
또한 최근 고출력 운전 영역에서의 확산 저항 저감을 통해 연료전지의 성능을 향상시키기 위해, Metal Foam, Metal Mesh, Expanded Metal 등을 적용한 분리판(이하, '다공체'라고도 함)이 제안되고 있으나, 다공체의 형상 및 구조는 냉각수 공급 유로의 유동 특성을 결정하는 중요한 인자로 작용하기 때문에, 다공체의 냉각수 유로 개선을 위한 연구가 필요한 실정이다.
본 발명은 반응가스 및 냉각수 유로 내 압력 손실을 낮출 수 있는 연료전지 스택을 제공하는 것을 해결하고자 하는 과제로 한다.
또한, 본 발명은 연료전기 셀 적층 시 압축 체결에 대한 구조 보강 및 냉각 성능 향상이 가능한 연료전지 스택을 제공하는 것을 해결하고자 하는 과제로 한다.
상기한 과제를 해결하기 위하여, 본 발명의 일 측면에 따르면, 복수 개의 연료전지 셀을 포함하는 연료전지 스택으로서, 연료전지 셀은, 애노드 전극과 캐소드 전극을 갖는 막-전극 접합체와, 막-전극 접합체의 양면에 각각 배치된 가스 확산층과, 가스 확산층과 접촉하도록 상기 애노드 전극 측과 마주보는 제1 면과 제1 면의 반대방향의 제2 면을 갖는 제1 분리판 및 가스 확산층과 접촉하도록 상기 캐소드 전극 측과 마주보는 제1 면과 제1 면의 반대방향의 제2 면을 갖는 제2 분리판을 포함하며, 제1 분리판의 제2 면 및 제2 분리판의 제2 면 중 적어도 하나에는 외부로 돌출된 하나 이상의 돌출부가 마련된 연료전지 스택이 제공된다.
이상에서 살펴본 바와 같이, 본 발명의 일 실시예와 관련된 연료전지 스택은 다음과 같은 효과를 갖는다.
냉각수 진입부의 유체 저항을 감소시킬 수 있고, 냉각 성능 향상 및 냉각수 공급계통에 연계되어 있는 유체기기의 동력 소모를 감소시킬 수 있으며, 연료전지 시스템의 성능, 안정성 및 발전 효율을 향상시킬 수 있다.

또한, 도 5는 제1 분리판(110)에서 연료가스의 유동을 나타내는 도면이고, 도 6은 제2 분리판(150)에서 산화가스의 유동을 나타내는 도면이며, 도 7a 및 도 7b는 제1 돌출부와 제2 돌출부를 나타내는 요부 사시도들이다.
또한, 도 8은 냉각수 유로를 설명하기 위한 도면이고, 도 9는 연료전지 스택의 절개 사시도이다.
본 발명의 일 실시예와 관련된 연료전지 스택은 복수 개의 연료전지 셀(100, 100-1, 100-2)을 포함한다.
도 1을 참조하면, 연료전지 셀(100)은 애노드 전극(11)과 캐소드 전극(12)을 갖는 막-전극 접합체(10) 및 막-전극 접합체의 양면에 각각 배치된 가스 확산층(20)를 포함한다.
도 9에서 붉은색 영역은 애노드 측 가스확산층(20)을 나타내고, 녹색 영역은 캐소드 측 가스확산층(20)을 나타낸다.
또한, 연료전지 셀(100)은 가스 확산층(20)과 적어도 일부에서 접촉하도록 상기 애노드 전극(11) 측과 마주보는 제1 면(111)과 제1 면의 반대방향의 제2 면(112)을 갖는 제1 분리판(110)을 포함한다.
또한, 연료전지 셀(100)은 가스 확산층(20)과 적어도 일부에서 접촉하도록 상기 캐소드 전극(12) 측과 마주보는 제1 면(151)과 제1 면(151)의 반대방향의 제2 면(152)을 갖는 제2 분리판(150)을 포함한다.
또한, 제1 분리판(110)의 제2 면(112) 및 제2 분리판(150)의 제2 면(152) 중 적어도 하나에는 외부로 돌출된 하나 이상의 돌출부(131, 132, 171)가 마련된다. 상기 돌출부(131, 132, 171)가 외부로 돌출된다는 의미는 제2 면 바깥쪽으로 돌출되는 것을 의미한다.
또한, 복수 개의 연료전지 셀(100, 100-1, 100-2)는 동일한 구조를 갖는다.
도 2를 참조하면, 연료전지 스택에서, 인접하는 2개의 연료전지 셀(100-1, 100-2)은 어느 한 연료전지 셀(100-2)의 제1 분리판(110)의 제2 면(112)과 나머지 연료전지 셀(100-1)의 제2 분리판(150)의 제2 면(152)이 마주하도록 적층된다. 또한, 제1 분리판(110)의 제2 면(112)과 제2 분리판(150)의 제2 면(152)은 상기 돌출부에 의해 소정 간격으로 이격되고, 그 사이 공간(200)으로 냉각수가 공급된다.
또한, 제1 분리판(110)에는 제2 면(112)에 외부로 돌출된 하나 이상의 제1 돌출부(131, 132)가 마련될 수 있다. 또한, 제2 분리판(150)에는 제2 면(152)에 상기 제1 돌출부(131, 132)와 접촉하도록 외부로 돌출된 하나 이상의 제2 돌출부(171)가 마련될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 연료전지 셀의 적층 시, 제1 돌출부(131, 132) 및 제2 돌출부(171)는 1:1 대응 구조로 접촉하도록 마련될 수 있다. 1:1 대응구조를 통해, 압축 체결에 해나 구조 보강 및 냉각 성능 향상에 기여할 수 있다.
이와 같은 구조에서, 인접하는 2개의 연료전지 셀(100-1, 100-2) 사이의 냉각수 유동공간(200)은 제1 돌출부(131) 및 제2 돌출부(171)의 높이의 합 이상의 두께를 가질 수 있다.
도 3 및 도 5를 참조하여, 제1 분리판(110)의 구조 및 연료가스의 유동을 설명한다.
제1 분리판(110)은 제1 면(111)에 연료가스(수소)가 유동하는 복수 개의 제1 채널(113)을 포함하는 반응영역(120)을 가지고, 제2 면(112)에 냉각수가 유동하도록 인접하는 2개의 제1 채널(113) 사이에 마련된 제2 채널(115)을 포함한다. 또한, 제1 채널(113)은 연료가스의 유동공간(117)을 형성하며, 제2 채널(115)는 냉각수의 유동공간(119)를 형성한다.
또한, 제1 분리판(110)에는 제1 채널의 길이방향의 양 측에 위치하는 연료가스 유입/배출구(141)와 냉각수 유입/배출구(142) 및 제1 채널의 폭 방향의 양 측에 위치하는 산화가스 유입/배출구(143)가 각각 마련된다.
또한, 제1 채널(113) 및 제2 채널(115)은 연료가스의 유동방향을 따라 각각 길게 형성될 수 있다. 또한, 인접하는 2개의 제1 채널(113)은 제2 채널(115)을 통해 연결될 수 있다. 또한, 제1 분리판(110)은 제1 면(111)과 제2 면(112)이 각각 유로를 갖도록 표면 구조화된다.
예를 들어, 제1 분리판(110)은 스탬핑 성형 금속 분리판일 수 있다. 또한, 제1 채널(113)과 제2 채널(115)은 표리 반전 구조를 가질 수 있다. 구체적으로, 제1 분리판(110)은 성형 공정 특성 상 제1 면에 연료 가스 공급용 제1 채널을 형성하면, 종속적으로 제2 면에 냉각수 공급용 제2 채널이 결정되는 구조를 갖는다. 이와 같은 직선 유로 구조에 따르면, 특히 고출력 영역에서 과량으로 유입되는 반응 가스(수소)와 냉각수의 유동 저항을 저감할 수 있다.
또한, 복수 개의 제1 돌출부(131, 132)는 반응영역(120)에 위치하지 않게 제1 분리판(110)의 가장자리에 마련될 수 있다. 구체적으로, 복수 개의 제1 돌출부(131, 132)는 반응영역(120)의 일 측에 위치하고, 연료가스를 반응영역(120)의 각각의 채널로 분배하기 위한 분배영역(130)에 마련될 수 있다. 상기 제1 돌출부(131, 132)는 반응가스의 분배 균일도를 향상시키는 기능을 함께 수행한다.
한편, 제1 돌출부(131, 132)는 원형 또는 사각형 단면을 가질 수 있다. 예를 들어, 제1 면 외부로 돌출된 제1 돌출부(131)는 사각형 단면을 가질 수 있고, 제2 면 외부로 돌출된 제1 돌출부(132)는 원형 단면을 가질 수 있다. 한편, 제2 면 외부로 돌출된 제1 돌출부(132)는 제2 분리판의 제2 돌출부(171)와 접촉하게 된다. 이와 같이, 다양한 형상의 돌출부를 소정 배열로 분배영역(130)에 형성함으로써, 연료/냉각수 유입/배출구의 유동 손실을 저감하고, 유량 분배의 균일도를 향상시킬 수 있다. 상기 분배영역(130)은 유동 완충/분배 기능을 수행한다. 또한, 제1 분리판(110)에는 반응영역과 유입/유출구 등을 실링하기 위한 가스켓(G)이 마련된다.
한편, 제2 분리판(150)의 제2 면(152)은 제1 분리판(110)의 제2 채널(115)과 마주하는 면이 평탄면으로 형성될 수 있다. 또한, 제1 돌출부(131, 132)와 제2 돌출부(171)가 접촉할 때, 제1 분리판(110)의 제2 채널(115)은 제2 분리판(150)의 제2 면(152)과 접촉하지 않는다.
이하, 도 4a, 4b 및 도 6을 참조하여, 제2 분리판(150)의 구조 및 산화가스(산소)의 유동을 설명한다.
제2 분리판(150)은 제1 면(151)에 산화가스가 유동하도록 복수 개의 홀을 갖는 다공체(180)가 위치하는 반응영역(160)을 구비하고, 제2 면(152)이 평탄면으로 형성된다. 즉, 제2 분리판(150)은 제1 면(151)이 산화 가스의 유동을 위해 표면 구조화된다.
구체적으로, 상기 제1 분리판(110)에는 반응영역(120)에 복수 개의 채널(113)이 직접 성형되지만, 제2 분리판(150)은 평탄면 상에 결합된 다공체(180)가 반응영역(160)을 형성하는 구조를 갖는다. 제2 분리판(150)은 제1 면에 금속 재질의 다공체(180)(도 9의 파란색 영역)가 결합될 수 있다. 이때, 상기 다공체(180)는 용접(예를 들어, spot welding 등)을 통해 제1 면(151)에 고정될 수 있다.
상기 다공체(180)는 반응가스(예를 들어, 산화가스)의 유로 형성을 위한 복수 개의 유동홀을 가질 수 있다. 상기 복수 개의 유동홀은 정형 또는 비정형의 반응가스 및 생성수 유로를 형성할 수 있다.
또한, 제2 분리판(150)에는 반응영역과 유입/유출구 등을 실링하기 위한 가스켓(G)이 마련되고, 셀 전압 모니터링 단자(155)가 마련될 수 있다.
또한, 복수 개의 제2 돌출부(171)는 반응영역(160)에 위치하지 않게 제2 분리판(150)의 가장자리(제1 분리판의 분배영역에 대응하는 위치)에 마련될 수 있다. 또한, 제2 분리판(150)에는 제1 분리판(110)의 분배영역(130)에 대응하는 위치에 복수 개의 제2 돌출부(171)가 형성된 분배영역(170)이 마련될 수 있다.
상기 분배영역(130, 170)을 통해 반응가스(연료가스, 산화가스)의 분배 균일도를 향상시킬 수 있다.
또한, 제2 분리판(150)에는 연료가스 유입/배출구(191)와 냉각수 유입/배출구(192) 및 제1 채널의 폭 방향의 양 측에 위치하는 산화가스 유입/배출구(193)가 각각 마련된다.
또한, 제1 분리판(110)에서 연료가스의 유동방향과 제2 분리판(150)에서 산화가스의 유동방향은 소정 각도로 기울어질 수 있다. 예를 들어, 제1 분리판(110)에서 연료가스의 주된 유동방향과 제2 분리판(150)에서 산화가스의 주된 유동방향은 실질적으로 직교하도록 각각 공급될 수 있다.
이와 같이, 제1 분리판(110)과 제2 분리판(150)은 서로 다른 구조를 가질 수 있다. 이때, 애노드 측/캐소드 측 분리판을 모두 스탬핑 성형 분리판으로 형성하는 경우 비해, 어느 한 분리판에 다공체를 적용하는 경우에는 냉각수 유로를 형성하는 일면이 평탄면으로 형성되기 때문에 냉각수 유로의 깊이가 낮아지게 된다. 이때, 셀 성능 증가분만큼 냉각수 공급 유량이 증가한 반면에 냉각수 유동 가용 면적이 감소하기 때문에 냉각수 유로(200)의 압력 손실 증가 문제가 발생할 수 있다. 이때, 제1 돌출부(131)와 제2 돌출부(171)의 정합 구조를 통해 냉각수 유로 깊이를 증가시킬 수 있다.
위에서 설명된 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예는 예시의 목적을 위해 개시된 것이고, 본 발명에 대한 통상의 지식을 가지는 당업자라면 본 발명의 사상과 범위 안에서 다양한 수정, 변경, 부가가 가능할 것이며, 이러한 수정, 변경 및 부가는 하기의 특허청구범위에 속하는 것으로 보아야 할 것이다.
본 발명의 일 실시예와 관련된 연료전지 스택에 따르면, 냉각수 진입부의 유체 저항을 감소시킬 수 있고, 냉각 성능 향상 및 냉각수 공급계통에 연계되어 있는 유체기기의 동력 소모를 감소시킬 수 있다.

Claims (14)

  1. 복수 개의 연료전지 셀을 포함하는 연료전지 스택으로서,
    연료전지 셀은, 애노드 전극과 캐소드 전극을 갖는 막-전극 접합체;
    막-전극 접합체의 양면에 각각 배치된 가스 확산층;
    가스 확산층과 접촉하도록 상기 애노드 전극 측과 마주보는 제1 면과 제1 면의 반대방향의 제2 면을 갖는 제1 분리판; 및
    가스 확산층과 접촉하도록 상기 캐소드 전극 측과 마주보는 제1 면과 제1 면의 반대방향의 제2 면을 갖는 제2 분리판을 포함하며,
    제1 분리판의 제2 면 및 제2 분리판의 제2 면 중 적어도 하나에는 외부로 돌출된 하나 이상의 돌출부가 마련된 연료전지 스택.
  2. 제 1 항에 있어서,
    인접하는 2개의 연료전지 셀은 어느 한 연료전지 셀의 제1 분리판의 제2 면과 나머지 연료전지 셀의 제2 분리판의 제2 면이 마주하도록 적층되며,
    제1 분리판의 제2 면과 제2 분리판의 제2 면은 상기 돌출부에 의해 이격되고, 그 사이 공간으로 냉각수가 공급되는 연료전지 스택.
  3. 제 2 항에 있어서,
    제1 분리판에는 제2 면에 외부로 돌출된 하나 이상의 제1 돌출부가 마련되고,
    제2 분리판에는 제2 면에 상기 제1 돌출부와 접촉하도록 외부로 돌출된 하나 이상의 제2 돌출부가 마련된 연료전지 스택.
  4. 제 3 항에 있어서,
    인접하는 2개의 연료전지 셀 사이의 냉각수 유동공간은 제1 돌출부 및 제2 돌출부의 높이의 합 이상의 두께를 갖는 연료전지 스택.
  5. 제 3 항에 있어서,
    제1 분리판은 제1 면에 연료가스가 유동하는 복수 개의 제1 채널을 포함하는 반응영역을 가지고, 제2 면에 냉각수가 유동하도록 인접하는 2개의 제1 채널 사이에 마련된 제2 채널을 포함하는 연료전지 스택.
  6. 제 5 항에 있어서,
    제1 채널 및 제2 채널은 연료가스의 유동방향을 따라 각각 길게 형성된 연료전지 스택.
  7. 제 5 항에 있어서,
    인접하는 2개의 제1 채널은 제2 채널을 통해 연결되는 연료전지 스택.
  8. 제 3 항에 있어서,
    복수 개의 제1 돌출부는 반응영역에 위치하지 않게 제1 분리판의 가장자리에 마련된 연료전지 스택.
  9. 제 8 항에 있어서,
    복수 개의 제1 돌출부는 반응영역의 일 측에 위치하고, 연료가스를 반응영역의 각각의 채널로 분배하기 위한 분배영역에 마련된 연료전지 스택.
  10. 제 5 항에 있어서,
    제2 분리판의 제2 면은 제1 분리판의 제2 채널과 마주하는 면이 평탄면으로 형성된 연료전지 스택.
  11. 제 10 항에 있어서,
    제1 돌출부와 제2 돌출부가 접촉할 때, 제1 분리판의 제2 채널은 제2 분리판의 제2 면과 접촉하지 않는 연료전지 스택.
  12. 제 3 항에 있어서,
    제2 분리판은 제1 면에 산화가스가 유동하도록 복수 개의 홀을 갖는 다공체가 위치하는 반응영역을 구비하고, 제2 면이 평탄면으로 형성된 연료전지 스택.
  13. 제 12 항에 있어서,
    복수 개의 제2 돌출부는 반응영역에 위치하지 않게 제2 분리판의 가장자리에 마련된 연료전지 스택.
  14. 제 12 항에 있어서,
    제1 분리판에서 연료가스의 유동방향과 제2 분리판에서 산화가스의 유동방향은 소정 각도로 기울어진 연료전지 스택.
