본 발명은 석면 함유 폐자재의 무해화 처리방법에 관한 것으로, 더욱 상세하게는 석면 함유 폐자재로부터 분리한 폐석면을 산처리 또는 열처리 후 탄산화 과정을 통해 더욱 효과적으로 무해화 처리하는 방법에 관한 것이다. 본 발명에 따른 석면 함유 폐자재의 무해화 처리방법은, 석면 함유 폐자재를 분쇄하고 폐석면을 분리하는 분쇄단계; 폐석면을 산(acid)과 혼합하는 산처리단계; 1차 탄산화처리 폐석면을 350~500℃온도로 1~3시간 가열하는 열처리단계; 열처리 폐석면을 냉각한 후 촉매와 혼합하는 촉매처리단계; 100~150℃온도와 5~8bar 압력을 유지하면서 촉매처리 폐석면에 CO2를 공급하여 반응시키는 2차 탄산화단계;를 포함하여 이루어지되, 촉매처리단계는 MgO, Mg(OH)2, NaCl 중 하나 이상이 물에 용해된 알칼리 수용액을 촉매로 이용하면서 이루어지는 것을 특징으로 한다.

Description

석면 함유 폐자재의 무해화 처리방법
본 발명은 석면 함유 폐자재의 무해화 처리방법에 관한 것으로, 더욱 상세하게는 석면 함유 폐자재로부터 분리한 폐석면을 산처리 또는 열처리 후 탄산화 과정을 통해 더욱 효과적으로 무해화 처리하는 방법에 관한 것이다.
자연계에 존재하는 섬유상의 규산염 광물의 총칭으로 마그네슘이 많은 함수규산염(含水硅酸鹽)을 말하며 아스베스토스(asbestos), 돌솜이라고도 부른다. 수정 같은 화학구조를 가지는 섬유성 무기 물질을 말하며, 사문석이나 각섬석이 섬유 형태로 변화한 천연 섬유이다. 석면은 뛰어난 단열성, 내열성, 절연성 등이 뛰어나고 마찰에 잘 견디며, 화학약품에 대한 저항성이 강해 건축 내외장재와 공업용 원료로 널리 사용되었다.
석면 건축자재는 사용용도 및 생산 공법에 따라 다른 석면 함유량을 가지고있다. 가령 천장텍스는 석면이 사회적 이슈로 떠오르게 1995년 이전에는 10-13%의 함유량을 유지하고 있었으나, 그 이후부터 사회적 요구에 의해 석면 사용 금지 기간 이전까지 약 5-10% 수준으로 유지되어 왔다. 또한 초조 방식으로 생산한 경우에는 5∼18%로 제품의 종류별로 다양한 범위의 석면을 사용하였으며, 휨강도가 요구되는 밤라이트의 경우 약 18%, 골석면 슬레이트의 경우 약 10% 내외, 휨강도가 많이 요구되지 않은 6mm 천정재는 약 5% 내외의 백석면을 사용하였으며, 압출성형 제품의 경우 생산성 및 휨강성 보강을 위하여 백석면 약 10% 정도를 사용하였다. 건축자재 사용 석면의 대부분은 백석면(Chrysotile)이나 부분적으로 청석면(Crocidolite) 또는 갈석면(Amosite) 등이 혼재 하는 것으로 보고되고 있다. 아래 [표 1]은 석면을 사용한 대표적 건축자재의 석면 함유량을 보여주고, [표 2]는 국내에서 연대별 생산된 석면 제품의 주요 품목을 보여준다.

한편 석면은 1급 발암물질에 해당하며, 장기간 석면에 노출되는 경우 폐암, 악성중피종, 석면폐 등의 호흡기질환을 유발할 수 있다. 석면의 크기, 체내 지속성, 양 등에 따라 유해성에 차이가 있으나, 일반적으로 청석면 > 갈석면 > 백석면 순으로 인체에 유해하다고 알려져 있다. 석면이 인체에 미치는 부정적인 영향을 감안하여, 2009년 1월 1일부터 <산업 안전 보건법>에 의해 석면을 0.1% 이상 함유하는 제품은 제조, 수입, 사용이 금지됐고, 2011년 이후부터는 석면을 1% 이상 함유하고 있는 모든 물질의 취급 및 이동 등은 불법이 되었다. 이와 같이 석면은 건강 보건상의 문제를 초래하기 때문에 석면 건축자재의 철거하려는 노력이 있다.
종래에는 일반적으로 석면 폐기물을 전처리하여 매립해 왔는데, 전처리 작업의 어려움, 고비용, 매립 후에도 환경 오염 물질로서의 노출 등의 문제가 지적되었다. 이에 따라 석면 무해화 처리방법이 연구되어 왔으며, 현재까지 개발된 석면 무해화 처리 방법에는 석면을 함유한 제품의 표면을 강산으로 처리하여 섬유상 구조를 제거하는 방법, 고온에서 가열하여 용융시키는 방법 등이 있다. 하지만 이러한 방법은 석면 자체가 갖고 있는 유해성이 비해서 전처리에 사용되는 강산이 일으키는 문제가 더 크거나 고온 가열로 인해 상당히 많은 에너지가 소요되어 처리 비용이 대폭 증대하는 등의 문제가 있었다.
본 발명은 종래 폐석면의 무해화 처리방식을 개선하고자 개발된 것으로서, 강산(strong acid)을 이용하지 않고도 또는 고온에서 열처리하지 않고도 폐석면을 더욱 효과적으로 무해화 처리할 수 있는 방법을 제공하는데 기술적 과제가 있다.
상기한 기술적 과제를 해결하기 위해 본 발명은, 석면 함유 폐자재를 분쇄하고 폐석면을 분리하는 분쇄단계; 폐석면을 산(acid)과 혼합하는 산처리단계; 1차 탄산화처리 폐석면을 350~500℃온도로 1~3시간 가열하는 열처리단계; 열처리 폐석면을 냉각한 후 촉매와 혼합하는 촉매처리단계; 100~150℃온도와 5~8bar 압력을 유지하면서 촉매처리 폐석면에 CO2를 공급하여 반응시키는 2차 탄산화단계;를 포함하여 이루어지되, 촉매처리단계는 MgO, Mg(OH)2, NaCl 중 하나 이상이 물에 용해된 알칼리 수용액을 촉매로 이용하면서 이루어지는 것을 특징으로 하는 석면 함유 폐자재의 무해화 처리방법을 제공한다.
본 발명에 따르면 다음과 같은 효과를 기대할 수 있다.
첫째, 강산(strong acid)을 이용하지 않고도 또는 고온에서 열처리하지 않고도 폐석면을 더욱 효과적으로 무해화 처리할 수 있다. 따라서 폐석면의 무해화 처리에 안정성과 경제성을 확보할 수 있다.
둘째, 무해화 처리된 폐석면을 건조, 포장 공정을 통해 재활용 소재로 제품화할 수 있으며, 이로써 석면 함유 폐자재의 폐기물을 줄여 환경 오염을 줄이는 것은 물론 자원 재활용에 따른 친환경성 또한 기대할 수 있다.

이하 첨부한 도면 및 바람직한 실시예에 따라 본 발명을 상세히 설명한다.
도 1은 본 발명에 따른 석면 함유 폐자재의 무해화 처리방법에 대한 개요도로, 보는 바와 같이 본 발명은 '석면 함유 폐자재의 분쇄 → 산처리 및/또는 열처리 → 탄산화 처리'를 통해 석면 무해화 처리가 이루어진다. 구체적으로 본 발명에 따른 석면 함유 폐자재의 무해화 처리방법을 단계별로 살펴본다.
1. 분쇄 단계
분쇄단계는 석면 함유 폐자재를 분쇄하고 폐석면을 분리하는 단계이다. 본 단계를 통해 석면 섬유가 완전 해면화되고, 폐석면과 시멘트 등의 물질이 분리된다. 분쇄과정에서 분진이 발생할 수 있으므로, 분쇄단계는 안정화제를 투입하면서 실시하는 것이 바람직하다.
분쇄단계는 슈레더, 롤러밀, 해머밀 등을 바람직하게 사용할 수 있으며, 더욱 바람직하게는 슈레더나 롤밀을 이용하여 50mm 미만으로 분쇄하는 1차 분쇄단계, 해머밀을 이용하여 1mm 이하로 분쇄하면서 폐섬유를 포집하여 분리하는 2차 분쇄단계로 구분하여 실시할 수 있다. 해머밀에 의한 2차 분쇄단계에 의해 섬유와 시멘트 입자 등을 완전하게 분리할 수 있는데, 해머밀 효율 향상을 위해 1차 분쇄단계를 실시하는 것이다. 특히 해머밀은 밀폐형 연속 공정 진행이 가능하여 밀도 12g/cm3의 천장재형 석면 건축자재의 분쇄에 유리하게 사용할 수 있으며, 특히 섬유의 해면과 같은 작업이 동시에 이루어져 분산성이 우수한 특성을 가진다. 도 2는 분쇄 단계별 석면 함유 폐자재의 사진을 보여주는데, 해머밀에 의한 2차 분쇄 후에 완전 해면 상태가 확인되고, 또한 SEM 사진에서도 폐석면 섬유와 시멘트 물질이 완전하게 분리된 상태가 확인된다.
2. 산처리 단계
산처리 단계는 폐석면을 산(acid)과 혼합하는 단계이다. 산처리는 폐석면을 산에 용해시켜 1차적으로 폐석면을 무해화하는 과정이 된다. 산처리에서 산은 옥살산, 중탄산, 아세트산 등 약산으로도 충분하며, 이는 탄산화과정을 통해 2차 무해화 과정을 거치기 때문이다. 산처리 단계는 산의 균질한 분산을 위해 무중력 믹서 활용하면서 실시하는 것이 바람직하다.
3. 열처리 및 촉매처리 단계
열처리는 폐석면을 350~500℃온도로 1~3시간 가열하는 단계이다. 열처리는 페석면의 반응을 활성하기 위한 과정이 된다. 촉매처리는 이어서 진행되는 탄산화과정에서 이산화탄소의 고정 반응을 증가시키기 위한 과정이 된다. 촉매로는 MgO, Mg(OH)2, NaCl 중 하나 이상이 물에 용해된 알칼리 수용액을 이용하는데, 폐석면 용액의 pH를 7 이상으로 조절함으로써 이산화탄소의 고정 반응을 증가시킬 수 있다.
4. 탄산화 단계
100~150℃온도와 5~8bar 압력을 유지하면서 산처리 폐석면에 CO2를 공급하여 반응시키는 단계이다. 탄산화는 폐석면과 CO2를 서로 반응시킴으로써 폐석면을 융해시키는 과정이 되는데, 이러한 폐석면의 탄산화 융해 메카니즘은 아래 화학식으로 간단하게 표현할 수 있다.

5. 건조, 포장
'석면 함유 폐자재의 분쇄 → 산처리 및/또는 열처리 → 탄산화 처리'라는 일련의 과정을 통해 폐석면의 무해화 처리가 가능해진다. 무해화 처리된 폐석면은 건조, 포장 단계를 거쳐 재활용 소재로 제품화할 수 있다. 수분이 있을 경우 재 수화 등의 문제로 사용이 불가능한 상태로 변화될 수 있으므로 완전 건조가 이어지도록 건조하며, 이때 건조는 레이몬드밀 건조기로 이용할 수 있다.
이하에서는 시험예에 의거하여 본 발명을 더욱 상세히 살펴본다. 다만, 아래의 시험예는 본 발명을 예시하기 위한 것일 뿐이며, 본 발명의 범위가 이로써 한정되는 것은 아니다.
[시험예1] 폐석면의 산처리 후 탄산화
1. 시험방법
폐석면의 화학적 무해화를 위하여 염산, 중탄산, 아세트산에 폐석면을 혼합하여 ball milling하여 슬러리화 시켰으며, 이 시료에 대한 탄산화를 수행하여 아래 [표 3]과 같은 조건으로 무해화 처리를 수행하였다. 무해화 처리는 무중력믹서에서 수행하였다.

위의 [표 3]의 시료에 대하여 XRD 패턴과 PLM 사진을 측정하였다. 측정결과 도 3 및 도 4와 같이 나타냈다. 도 3은 산처리한 시료에 XRD 패턴과 PLM 사진이다. 도 3에서 보는 바와 같이, 염산을 사용한 시료(H-1)는 중탄산 내지 아세트산을 사용한 시료(N-1, A-1)과 상이한 XRD 패턴을 나타냈는데, 이는 강산인 염산이 약산에 비해 시료자체에 포함된 성분을 용해시키기 용이한 것 때문으로 본다. 그런데 어느 시료에서나 10-15도 사이의 석면 peak는 확인되었다. PLM에 의한 사진에서도 백석면으로 판단되는 섬유상 물질이 관찰되었으며, 전체적으로 2-3% 정도의 석면 함유량을 가지고 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 도 4는 산처리한 시료를 대상으로 탄산화를 진행한 시료의 XRD 및 PLM 결과를 보여준다. XRD 상에서는 산 종류별 용해 성분 차이 등을 통해 석면의 존재 여부를 확인하기 힘들었으나, PLM 사진을 확인한 결과 일부 석면은 화학적 변성 및 열적 변성에 의해 고형화 처리가 된 것이 확인되었다. 하지만 고형화되지 않은 채 노출되어 있는 석면도 일부 검출되었으며, 함량은 약 1-2% 정도 되는 것으로 추정되어 탄산화 처리에 의해 석면 무해화율을 향상시킬 수 있었다.
[시험예2] 폐석면의 열처리 후 탄산화
1. 시험방법
열처리 및 탄산화를 통한 폐석면 무해화를 위하여 500℃에서 1시간 열처리 한 후, 이 시료에 대한 탄산화를 수행하여 아래 [표 4]와 같은 조건으로 무해화 처리를 수행하였다.

2. 시험결과
위의 [표 4]의 시료에 대하여 XRD 패턴과 PLM 사진을 측정하였다. 측정결과 도 5 내지 도 7과 같이 나타냈다. 도 5 및 도 6에서 보는 바와 같이 원시료(A)의 경우 XRD 패턴 상에 백석면(Chrysotile)이 나타나는 것으로 확인되었으며, PLM 사진 상에서도 전형적인 석면의 모양을 나타내는 것으로 확인되었다. 각 조건에 따라 무해화 처리된 4종류의 시료를 살펴보면, 원시료에 비해 백석면의 피크가 확연히 줄어드는 것으로 확인되며, 특히 PLM 사진을 확인해 보면 전형적인 석면에 비하여 화학적 반응 또는 열변성 등으로 추정되는 인자에 의하여 백석면 고유의 광학적 특성이 소실된 것이 확인된다. 도 7은 원시료 및 무해화 처리 시료의 XRD 패턴을 상대비교한 그림인데, 보는 바와 같이 무해화 처리된 시료가 원시료에 비해 백석면의 피크가 확연히 줄어드는 것으로 확인된다.
[시험예3] 무해화 처리 시료의 분석
위의 [시험예1,2]에서 수행한 무해화 처리 시료(0306wg-1, 0306wg-3)에 대하여, EPA-600/R-93-116(Method for the determination of asbestos in bulk building materials)을 PLM(PolarizedLight Microscopy)법으로 확인한 결과 아래 [표 5]와 같이 무해화 시료에는 석면이 검출되지 않는 것으로 확인되었다.

본 발명은 석면 함유 폐자재로부터 분리한 폐석면을 산처리 또는 열처리 후 탄산화 과정을 통해 더욱 효과적으로 무해화 처리하는 방법에 관한 것이다. 본 발명에 따르면 강산(strong acid)을 이용하지 않고도 또는 고온에서 열처리하지 않고도 폐석면을 더욱 효과적으로 무해화 처리할 수 있다. 이렇게 무해화 처리된 폐석면은 건조, 포장 공정을 통해 재활용 소재로 제품화할 수 있다.

Claims (5)

  1. 석면 함유 폐자재를 분쇄하고 폐석면을 분리하는 분쇄단계;
    폐석면을 산(acid)과 혼합하는 산처리단계;
    100~150℃온도와 5~8bar 압력을 유지하면서 산처리 폐석면에 CO2를 공급하여 반응시키는 탄산화단계;
    를 포함하여 이루어지는 것을 특징으로 하는 석면 함유 폐자재의 무해화 처리방법.
  2. 석면 함유 폐자재를 분쇄하고 폐석면을 분리하는 분쇄단계;
    폐석면을 350~500℃온도로 1~3시간 가열하는 열처리단계;
    열처리 폐석면을 냉각한 후 촉매와 혼합하는 촉매처리단계;
    100~150℃온도와 5~8bar 압력을 유지하면서 촉매처리 폐석면에 CO2를 공급하여 반응시키는 탄산화단계;
    를 포함하여 이루어지되,
    상기 촉매처리단계는, MgO, Mg(OH)2, NaCl 중 하나 이상이 물에 용해된 알칼리 수용액을 촉매로 이용하면서 이루어지는 것을 특징으로 하는 석면 함유 폐자재의 무해화 처리방법.
  3. 석면 함유 폐자재를 분쇄하고 폐석면을 분리하는 분쇄단계;
    폐석면을 산(acid)과 혼합하는 산처리단계;
    1차 탄산화처리 폐석면을 350~500℃온도로 1~3시간 가열하는 열처리단계;
    열처리 폐석면을 냉각한 후 촉매와 혼합하는 촉매처리단계;
    100~150℃온도와 5~8bar 압력을 유지하면서 촉매처리 폐석면에 CO2를 공급하여 반응시키는 2차 탄산화단계;
    를 포함하여 이루어지되,
    상기 촉매처리단계는, MgO, Mg(OH)2, NaCl 중 하나 이상이 물에 용해된 알칼리 수용액을 촉매로 이용하면서 이루어지는 것을 특징으로 하는 석면 함유 폐자재의 무해화 처리방법.
  4. 제1항 또는 제3항에서,
    상기 산처리단계는, 무중력믹서에서 옥살산, 중탄산 또는 아세트산을 공급하여 혼합하면서 이루어지는 것을 특징으로 하는 석면 함유 폐자재의 무해화 처리방법.
  5. 제1항 내지 제3항 중 어느 한 항에서,
    상기 분쇄단계는,
    슈레더나 롤밀을 이용하여 50mm 미만으로 분쇄하는 1차 분쇄단계;
    해머밀을 이용하여 1mm 미만으로 분쇄하면서 폐섬유를 포집하여 분리하는 2차 분쇄단계;로 이루이지는 것을 특징으로 하는 석면 함유 폐자재의 무해화 처리방법.
