Description

サイドエアバッグ装置
 本発明は、車両の側突時などに、車両用シートの乗員の側方へ膨張展開する袋状のクッションを備えたサイドエアバッグ装置に関するものである。
 近年の車両にはエアバッグ装置がほぼ標準装備されている。エアバッグ装置は、車両衝突などの緊急時に作動する安全装置であって、ガス圧でクッションを膨張展開させて乗員を受け止めて保護する。一例としてサイドエアバッグ装置は、車両の側突時などに、車両用シートの乗員の側方へ膨張展開する袋状のクッションを備えている。
 通常、車両に横方向からの衝撃が加わった場合、乗員は、車幅方向に移動する。例えば、助手席側のサイドドアに他の車両や電柱などの物体(衝突物)が衝突する側突が生じた場合、乗員を保護するサイドエアバッグは2種類に大別される。1つ目はいわゆるニアサイドエアバッグである。ニアサイドエアバッグは、助手席とサイドドアとの間で膨張展開し、衝突物接触側の乗員(ニアサイド側乗員;この場合は助手席側乗員)がサイドドアに衝突するのを防ぐ。2つ目はいわゆるファーサイドエアバッグ(例えば特許文献1)である。ファーサイドエアバッグは、運転席と助手席との間で膨張展開し、横方向からの衝撃によって車両中央に移動する乗員(ファーサイド側乗員;この場合はドライバ側乗員)を保護する。
 特許文献1には、ファーサイドエアバッグと、ファーサイドエアバッグに連結されたテンションテザーとを備えた車両用安全装置が記載されている。テンションテザーは、その長手方向両端部がシートバックフレームに連結され、ファーサイドエアバッグの膨張展開状態で、シートバックフレームの上端部におけるヘッドレストよりも車両外側の部分から上方側へ延びて、さらにヘッドレストにシート後方側から引っ掛かる。そしてテンションテザーは、ヘッドレストの上面からファーサイドエアバッグの上面へ延び、さらにファーサイドエアバッグの車両内側を通ってシートバックフレームへ延びる。
 特許文献1では、テンションテザーによってファーサイドエアバッグが車幅方向内側から支持され、しかも、ファーサイドエアバッグが膨張展開する際に乗員とテンションテザーとを接触しないようにできるので、ファーサイドエアバッグの展開方向を安定させることができる、としている。

 特許文献1の車両用安全装置では、テンションテザーによってファーサイドエアバッグを車幅方向内側から支持し、さらにファーサイドエアバッグが膨張展開する際に乗員とテンションテザーとが接触しないようにする必要がある。このため、テンションテザーの取付け位置に制約があり、取り付け作業も手間となる。また、ファーサイドエアバッグの膨張展開時にテンションテザーが所定位置からずれると、ファーサイドエアバッグの展開方向を安定させることが困難となる。
 本発明は、このような課題に鑑み、乗員の保護性能を向上させることができるサイドエアバッグ装置を提供することを目的としている。
 上記課題を解決するために、本発明にかかるサイドエアバッグ装置の代表的な構成は、インフレータと、車両用シートのシートバックの側部に設けられ、インフレータから供給されるガスを利用して車両用シートの乗員の側方へ膨張展開する袋状のクッションとを備えるサイドエアバッグ装置において、クッションは、インフレータが内部に挿入されていて、車両用シートの乗員の側方へ膨張展開するメインチャンバと、メインチャンバの乗員側の面から前記車両用シートに向かって突出するように設けられていて、メインチャンバの膨張展開時に車両用シートの乗員に向かって突出し乗員の頭部を受け止めるサブチャンバと、メインチャンバとサブチャンバをつなぐパネルとを含み、パネルは、少なくともサブチャンバの下端部分よりも上方でメインチャンバに接続され、メインチャンバの乗員側の面よりも乗員側でサブチャンバに接続されていることを特徴とする。
 上記構成では、クッションは、膨張展開した状態でメインチャンバが車両用シートの乗員の側方へ膨張展開し、サブチャンバが車両用シートの乗員に向かって突出し乗員の頭部を受け止める。さらに膨張展開した状態のクッションでは、メインチャンバとサブチャンバをつなぐパネルがメインチャンバとサブチャンバから引っ張られて、メインチャンバとサブチャンバの間で平面を形成する。このため、パネルは、クッションの膨張展開時にサブチャンバを支持することができる。
 したがって上記構成によれば、衝突時に乗員の頭部が車両下方に移動すると、サブチャンバに頭部が受け止められるだけでなく、パネルがサブチャンバを支持することで、乗員の頭部が下方に移動することを抑制できる。また、衝突時に乗員の頭部が車両前方に移動すると、平面を形成したパネルが乗員の頭部を受け止めることで、乗員の頭部が前方に移動することを抑制できる。このようにして上記構成によれば、乗員の保護性能を向上させることができる。
 上記のパネルは、少なくとも3辺を有するパネルであって、メインチャンバのうちサブチャンバの下端部分よりも上方に位置する第1箇所と、サブチャンバの前端のうち乗員側に位置する第2箇所と、メインチャンバのうちサブチャンバの下端部分の前方またはその付近の第3箇所とに接続されているとよい。
 これにより、膨張展開した状態のクッションでは、メインチャンバとサブチャンバをつなぐパネルが、メインチャンバに位置する第1箇所および第3箇所と、サブチャンバの第2箇所とから引っ張られる。このため、パネルは、クッションの膨張展開時にメインチャンバとサブチャンバの間で平面をより確実に形成して、サブチャンバを支持することができ、さらに乗員の頭部を受け止めることができる。
 上記のパネルは、クッションの膨張展開時にクッションの前方に位置しているとよい。さらに上記のパネルは、クッションの前端に位置しているとよい。
 これにより、パネルは、膨張展開した状態のクッションの前方または前端において、メインチャンバとサブチャンバの間で平面を形成することになる。このため、パネルは、衝突時に乗員の頭部が車両中央側の斜め前方に移動したとき、乗員の頭部を確実に受け止めることができる。なおパネルの前後方向の位置は、車両用シートに正規の姿勢で着座した乗員の正面方向を前とし、背面方向を後ろとする。
 上記のメインチャンバは、インフレータから供給されたガスを排気するベントホールを有し、サブチャンバは、メインチャンバとは別体の基布で形成されていて、メインチャンバとサブチャンバの接続部分でベントホールに連通しベントホールから排気されたガスを導入するガス導入口を有するとよい。
 これにより、膨張展開したクッションのメインチャンバのベントホールからサブチャンバのガス導入口を介して、サブチャンバにガスが導入される。このようにしてクッションのメインチャンバおよびサブチャンバが膨張展開する。さらに、サブチャンバは、メインチャンバとは別体であるため、メインチャンバとは別体の基布によって適宜の形状を設定し易い。
 上記のサブチャンバは、メインチャンバとは一体の基布で形成されていて、クッションはさらに、メインチャンバとサブチャンバとの間に形成され、メインチャンバからサブチャンバへガスを導入するダクトを有するとよい。
 これにより、クッションのメインチャンバが膨張展開した後、ダクトを介して、メインチャンバからサブチャンバにガスが導入される。このようにしてクッションのサブチャンバを、メインチャンバよりも遅れて膨張展開するディレイチャンバとして機能させることができる。このため、サブチャンバは、乗員から見て遠い側(ファーサイド)の衝突時の慣性によって、乗員が車幅方向中央(ファーサイド)に向かって移動する間に、ディレイチャンバとして膨張展開して、乗員の頭部をより確実に受け止めて保護することができる。
 上記のサブチャンバは、車両用シートに着座した乗員の肩部よりも高く頭部よりも低い位置に設定されているとよい。
 これにより、膨張展開した状態のクッションでは、衝突時に乗員の頭部が車両下方に移動するとき、サブチャンバで乗員の頭部をより確実に受け止めて、頭部の移動を抑制することができる。
 上記のメインチャンバは、膨張展開時に上方に隆起して、車両用シートの乗員の側方へ膨張展開する隆起部と、膨張展開時に隆起部の下方に位置する基部とを含み、サブチャンバは、基部から乗員側に膨張展開して、隆起部の乗員側の面よりも車両用シートに向かって突出し、乗員の頭部が下方に移動したとき頭部を受け止める支持部を含み、パネルは、メインチャンバの隆起部とサブチャンバの支持部とをつなぐとよい。
 上記構成では、メインチャンバは、隆起部と基部とを含み、隆起部が上方に隆起して、車両用シートの乗員の側方へ膨張展開し、基部が隆起部の下方に膨張展開する。そしてサブチャンバは、基部から乗員側に膨張展開して、支持部が車両用シートの乗員に向かって突出し乗員の頭部を受け止める。さらに膨張展開した状態のクッションでは、メインチャンバの隆起部とサブチャンバの支持部とをつなぐパネルが、隆起部と支持部から引っ張られて、隆起部と支持部の間で平面を形成する。このため、パネルは、クッションの膨張展開時にサブチャンバの支持部を支持することができる。
 したがって上記構成によれば、衝突時に乗員の頭部が車両下方に移動すると、サブチャンバの支持部に頭部が受け止められるだけでなく、パネルがサブチャンバの支持部を支持することで、乗員の頭部が下方に移動することを抑制できる。また、衝突時に乗員の頭部が車両前方に移動すると、平面を形成したパネルが乗員の頭部を受け止めることで、乗員の頭部が前方に移動することを抑制できる。このようにして上記構成によれば、乗員の保護性能を向上させることができる。
 上記のクッションはさらに、基部から乗員側の反対側に膨張展開する他のサブチャンバを含み、他のサブチャンバは、隆起部の乗員側の反対側の面よりも車両用シートに隣接する他の車両用シートに向かって突出し、他の車両用シートの乗員の頭部が下方に移動したとき頭部を受け止める他の支持部を含むとよい。
 これにより、他のサブチャンバは、基部から乗員側の反対側に膨張展開して、支持部が、車両用シートに隣接する他の車両用シートの乗員に向かって突出し乗員の頭部を受け止める。したがって、衝突時に他の車両用シートの乗員の頭部が車両下方に移動すると、他のサブチャンバの支持部によって頭部を受け止めることができる。
 上記のクッションはさらに、メインチャンバの隆起部と他のサブチャンバの他の支持部とをつなぐ他のパネルを含むとよい。
 これにより、膨張展開した状態のクッションでは、他のパネルが、メインチャンバの隆起部と他のサブチャンバの他の支持部から引っ張られて、隆起部と他の支持部の間で平面を形成する。このため、他のパネルは、クッションの膨張展開時に他のサブチャンバの他の支持部を支持することができる。
 したがって上記構成によれば、衝突時に乗員の頭部が車両下方に移動すると、他のサブチャンバの他の支持部に頭部が受け止められるだけでなく、他のパネルが他の支持部を支持することで、乗員の頭部が下方に移動することを抑制できる。また、衝突時に乗員の頭部が車両前方に移動すると、平面を形成した他のパネルが乗員の頭部を受け止めることで、乗員の頭部が前方に移動することを抑制できる。このようにして上記構成によれば、乗員の保護性能を向上させることができる。
 上記のパネルは、非膨張のパネルであるとよい。このように、非膨張のパネルがメインチャンバとサブチャンバをつなぐことで、サブチャンバを確実に支持して、乗員の頭部が下方に移動することを抑制できる。また、衝突時に乗員の頭部が車両前方に移動すると、平面を形成した非膨張のパネルが乗員の頭部を受け止めることで、乗員の頭部が前方に移動することを確実に抑制できる。
 本発明によれば、乗員の保護性能を向上させることができるサイドエアバッグ装置を提供することができる。

 本実施形態においては、乗員が正規の姿勢で座席に着座した際に、乗員が向いている方向を前方、その反対方向を後方と称する。また乗員が正規の姿勢で座席に着座した際に、乗員の右側を右方向、乗員の左側を左方向と称する。更に、乗員が正規の姿勢で着座した際に、乗員の頭部方向を上方、乗員の腰部方向を下方と称する。そして、以下の説明において用いる図面では、必要に応じて、上述した乗員を基準とした前後左右上下方向を、Front、Back、Left、Right、Up、Downと示す。

 サイドエアバッグ装置100は、図1(b)に示すように、袋状のクッション118を備える。クッション118は、ガス発生装置であるインフレータ120から供給されるガスを利用して、車両用シート104の乗員122(図2参照)の側方へ膨張展開する。クッション118は、例えば、その表面を構成する基布を表裏で縫製したり、OPW(One-Piece Woven)を用いて紡織したりすることにより袋状に形成される。
 図2は、図1(b)の車両用シート104に乗員122が着座しているときのサイドエアバッグ装置100を例示する図である。図2(a)、図2(b)は、クッション118が膨張展開した状態のサイドエアバッグ装置100を車両前側、車幅方向外側から見た状態をそれぞれ例示している。
 クッション118は、図1(b)に示すようにメインチャンバ124と、サブチャンバ126と、非膨張のパネル128とを含む。メインチャンバ124は、インフレータ120が内部に挿入されていて、図2(a)に示す車両用シート104の乗員122の側方へ膨張展開する。
 サブチャンバ126は、メインチャンバ124とは別体の基布で形成されたチャンバであって、接続部分130を介してメインチャンバ124に接続されている。またサブチャンバ126は、メインチャンバ124の乗員側の面127から車両用シート104に向かって突出するように設けられていて、メインチャンバ124の膨張展開時に図2(a)に示すように車両用シート104の乗員122に向かって突出する。
 非膨張のパネル128は、メインチャンバ124とサブチャンバ126をつなぐ3辺を有する別体のパネルであって、第1箇所132、第2箇所134および第3箇所136に接続されている。なお非膨張のパネル128は、別体のパネルに限らず、メインチャンバ124またはサブチャンバ126と一体であってもよい。第1箇所132は、メインチャンバ124に位置していて、サブチャンバ126の下端部分137よりも上方に位置している。
 第2箇所134は、図1(b)および図2(a)に示すようにサブチャンバ126に位置していて、メインチャンバ124の乗員側の面127よりも乗員側に位置し、サブチャンバ126の前端138のうち乗員側に位置している。第3箇所136は、図1(b)および図2(b)に示すようにメインチャンバ124に位置していて、サブチャンバ126の下端部分137の前方またはその付近、あるいは、接続部分130の前端140よりも前方またはその付近に位置している。
 また図2(a)では、側突に伴う横方向の衝撃(矢印A参照)を車両102が受け、乗員122が慣性によって車両中央側に向かう横方向の衝撃(矢印B参照)を受けて車両中央側に移動する状態を示している。つまり、側突に伴う乗員122の動線軸は、これら矢印A、Bで示される横方向(すなわち車幅方向)となる。
 サイドエアバッグ装置100は、図2(a)に示すように、矢印Bで示される方向に移動した乗員122の例えば頭部142を、膨張展開したクッション118によって受け止める。
 具体的には、膨張展開した状態のクッション118では、メインチャンバ124とサブチャンバ126をつなぐ非膨張のパネル128が、メインチャンバ124に位置する第1箇所132および第3箇所136と、サブチャンバ126の第2箇所134とから引っ張られる。このため、非膨張のパネル128は、クッション118の膨張展開時にメインチャンバ124とサブチャンバ126の間で平面Cをより確実に形成して、サブチャンバ126を支持することができる。
 また図2(b)に示すようにクッション118では、膨張展開した状態でサブチャンバ126が、乗員122の肩部144よりも高く頭部142よりも低い位置に設定されている。
 ここで側突時に図2(a)の矢印Bで示す方向に乗員122の頭部142が移動し、さらに図2(b)の矢印Dに示すように頭部142が車両下方に移動する場合を想定する。この場合、クッション118では、サブチャンバ126が車両用シート104の乗員122に向かって突出することにより、乗員122の頭部142を受け止めて、さらに非膨張のパネル128がサブチャンバ126を支持することで、頭部142が下方に移動することを抑制できる。
 また側突時に図2(a)の矢印Bで示す方向に乗員122の頭部142が移動し、さらに図2(b)の矢印Eに示すように頭部142が車両前方に移動した場合を想定する。この場合、クッション118では、平面Cを形成した非膨張のパネル128が乗員122の頭部142を受け止めることで、頭部142が前方に移動することを抑制できる。このようにしてサイドエアバッグ装置100によれば、乗員122の保護性能を向上させることができる。
 ここでクッション118は、図2(b)に示す膨張展開した状態で前後方向において、サブチャンバ126のうち第2箇所134すなわちサブチャンバ126の前端138よりも、メインチャンバ124のうち第3箇所136すなわちメインチャンバ124の前端に相当する箇所の方が前方に位置している。ただしクッション118において接続部分130をより前方に設定したり、メインチャンバ124やサブチャンバ126の形状を変更したりすれば、クッション118の膨張展開時に、サブチャンバ126の前端138の方が、メインチャンバ124の第3箇所136よりも前方に位置する場合もあり得る。このようなクッション118において、非膨張のパネル128は、膨張展開した状態のクッション118の前端、すなわちサブチャンバ126の前端138やメインチャンバ124の前端となる第3箇所136、あるいは、これらの前端付近を含むクッション118の前方に位置している。
 これにより、非膨張のパネル128は、膨張展開した状態のクッション118の前方または前端において、メインチャンバ124とサブチャンバ126の間で平面Cを形成することになる。このため、非膨張のパネル128は、衝突時に乗員122の頭部142が車両中央側の斜め前方に移動したとき、乗員122の頭部142を確実に受け止めることができる。なお非膨張のパネル128の前後方向の位置は、車両用シート104に正規の姿勢で着座した乗員122の正面方向を前とし、背面方向を後ろとする。
 なお非膨張のパネル128は、ここでは三角形としたが、これに限らず、台形などの多角形としてもよい。非膨張のパネルを多角形にした場合には、クッション118の膨張展開時に生じる、図2(a)に点線で示すテンションラインFの近傍に非膨張のパネルの上端辺146を位置させることにより、平面Cをより確実に形成することができる。
 図3は、図1(b)のクッション118を形成する過程を例示した図である。図3(a)に示すようにメインチャンバ124は、乗員側の面127に複数(ここでは4つ)のベントホール148を有する。サブチャンバ126は、メインチャンバ124とは別体の基布で形成されていて、複数(ここでは4つ)のガス導入口150を有する。
 そして図3(a)の矢印Gに示すように、サブチャンバ126をメインチャンバ124に接近させて、ガス導入口150とベントホール148を重ねてその周囲を縫製するなどして、図3(b)に示す接続部分130を形成する。
 図3(b)に示すように接続部分130では、サブチャンバ126のガス導入口150が、メインチャンバ124のベントホール148に連通し、ベントホール148から排気されたガスをサブチャンバ126に導入することができる。
 さらに、図3(b)の矢印Hに示すように非膨張のパネル128を、サブチャンバ126の前端138と、接続部分130の前端140と、メインチャンバ124とに接近させる。続いて、図3(c)に示すように非膨張のパネル128を、メインチャンバ124に位置する第1箇所132および第3箇所136と、サブチャンバ126に位置する第2箇所134とに接続して、メインチャンバ124とサブチャンバ126をつなぐようにする。このようにして、図1(b)に示すクッション118を形成することができる。
 膨張展開したクッション118のメインチャンバ124のベントホール148からサブチャンバ126のガス導入口150を介して、サブチャンバ126にガスが導入される。そのため、メインチャンバ124およびサブチャンバ126をより確実に膨張展開させることができる。また、サブチャンバ126は、メインチャンバ124とは別体であるため、メインチャンバ124とは別体の基布によって適宜の形状を設定し易い。
 なおサブチャンバ126は、その前端138が乗員側に向かうほど、すなわちメインチャンバ124から遠ざかるほど厚みが小さく先細りになるような形状を形成している。これにより、乗員122の頭部142がメインチャンバ124側に移動した場合に厚みのある部分で頭部142をより確実に保護することができる。
 図4は、図1(b)のクッション118の変形例およびその縫製過程を例示する図である。変形例のクッション118Aでは、図4(a)に示すように、メインチャンバ124Aとサブチャンバ126Aとが一体の基布で形成されている。
 クッション118Aはさらに、ダクト152を有する。ダクト152は、メインチャンバ124Aとサブチャンバ126Aとの間に形成され、メインチャンバ124Aからサブチャンバ126Aへガスを導入する。なおメインチャンバ124Aの内部には、インフレータ120Aの一部が挿入されている。インフレータ120Aは、本体154から突出したスタッドボルト156、158により、車両用シート104のシートバック106の側部に設置することができる。
 またメインチャンバ124Aは、シーム部160、162を有する。サブチャンバ126Aは、縫製しろ164を有する。そして、図4(a)の矢印Iに示すように、メインチャンバ124Aとサブチャンバ126Aとの間に形成されたダクト152の位置などを基準にして、サブチャンバ126Aをメインチャンバ124Aの乗員側の面127Aに折り重ねる。これにより、サブチャンバ126Aに形成された縫製しろ164は、図4(b)に示すようにメインチャンバ124Aのシーム部160、162に重なる。
 さらに、縫製しろ164とシーム部160、162とを重ねた状態で縫製して、図4(b)の矢印Jに示すようにサブチャンバ126Aを上方に折り返す。続いて、図4(c)に示すように非膨張のパネル128Aを、メインチャンバ124Aに位置する第1箇所132Aおよび第3箇所136Aと、サブチャンバ126Aに位置する第2箇所134Aとに接続して、メインチャンバ124Aとサブチャンバ126Aをつなぐようにする。このようにして、変形例のクッション118Aを形成することができる。なお第1箇所132Aおよび第3箇所136Aは、サブチャンバ126Aの下端部分137Aよりも上方に位置している。また第2箇所134Aは、メインチャンバ124Aの乗員側の面127Aよりも乗員側に位置している。
 膨張展開した状態のクッション118Aでは、メインチャンバ124Aが膨張展開した後、ダクト152を介して、メインチャンバ124Aからサブチャンバ126Aにガスが導入される。このようにしてクッション118Aでは、膨張展開時にサブチャンバ126Aをメインチャンバ124Aよりも遅れて膨張展開するディレイチャンバとして機能させることができる。
 このため、クッション118Aでは、乗員122から見て遠い側(ファーサイド)の衝突時の慣性によって、乗員122が車幅方向中央(ファーサイド)に向かって移動する間に、サブチャンバ126Aがディレイチャンバとして膨張展開して、乗員122の頭部142をより確実に受け止めて保護することができる。
 図5は、図1(b)のクッション118の他の変形例を例示する図である。図5(a)は、変形例のクッション118Bが膨張展開した状態を示している。図5(b)は、図5(a)のクッション118Bを上方から見た状態を示している。図5(c)は、車両用シート104のシートバック106の車両中央側の側部に装着されたクッション118Bが膨張展開した状態を示している。
 変形例のクッション118Bは、インフレータ120Bから供給されるガスを利用して膨張展開する一体のチャンバであって、メインチャンバ124Bと、サブチャンバ126B、126Cとを含む。メインチャンバ124Bは、図5(a)に示すように隆起部166と基部168とを含む。隆起部166は、膨張展開時に上方に隆起して、乗員122の側方に膨張展開する。基部168は、隆起部166の下方に膨張展開する。
 サブチャンバ126Bは、基部168から乗員側に膨張展開し、支持部170を含む。支持部170は、図5(b)および図5(c)に示すように、隆起部166の乗員側の面127Bよりも車両用シート104に向かって突出し、乗員122の頭部142(図2参照)が下方に移動したとき頭部142を受け止める位置に設定されている。
 他のサブチャンバ126Cは、基部168から乗員側の反対側に膨張展開し、支持部172を含む。支持部172は、隆起部166の乗員側の反対側の面127Cよりも車両用シート104に隣接する他の車両用シート110に向かって突出し(図5(c)参照)、他の車両用シート110の乗員の頭部が下方に移動したとき頭部を受け止める位置に設定されている。
 クッション118Bはさらに、非膨張のパネル128B、128Cを含む。非膨張のパネル128Bは、図5(c)に示す隆起部166に位置する第1箇所132Bおよび第3箇所136Bと、支持部170に位置する第2箇所134Bとに接続されていて、メインチャンバ124Bの隆起部166とサブチャンバ126Bの支持部170をつないでいる。なお第1箇所132Bは、サブチャンバ126Bの支持部170よりも上方に位置している。第2箇所134Bは、隆起部166の乗員側の面127Bよりも乗員側に位置している。第3箇所136Bは、サブチャンバ126Bの支持部170と同程度の高さに位置しているが、支持部170の上方に位置させてもよい。
 また、非膨張のパネル128Cは、図5(c)に示す隆起部166に位置する第1箇所132Cおよび第3箇所136Cと、支持部172に位置する第2箇所134Cとに接続されていて、メインチャンバ124Bの隆起部166とサブチャンバ126Cの支持部172をつないでいる。なお第1箇所132Cは、サブチャンバ126Cの支持部172よりも上方に位置している。第2箇所134Cは、隆起部166の乗員側の反対側の面127Cよりも他の車両用シート110側に位置している。第3箇所136Cは、サブチャンバ126Cの支持部172と同程度の高さに位置しているが、支持部172の上方に位置させてもよい。このようにして、変形例のクッション118Bを形成することができる。
 このようなクッション118Bによれば、衝突時に乗員122の頭部142が車両下方に移動した場合、サブチャンバ126Bの支持部170が車両用シート104の乗員122に向かって突出し頭部142を受け止めることができる。さらに、非膨張のパネル128Bは、隆起部166と支持部170から引っ張られて、隆起部166と支持部170の間で平面を形成する。このため、クッション118Bでは、非膨張のパネル128Bが支持部170を支持することができるため、頭部142が下方に移動することを抑制できる。
 また、クッション118Bでは、乗員122の頭部142が車両前方に移動した場合、平面を形成した非膨張のパネル128Bが頭部142を受け止めることで、頭部142が前方に移動することを抑制できる。
 さらにクッション118Bによれば、衝突時に他の車両用シート110に着座した乗員の頭部が車両下方に移動した場合、サブチャンバ126Cの支持部172が車両用シート110の乗員に向かって突出し頭部を受け止めることができる。さらに、非膨張のパネル128Cは、隆起部166と支持部172から引っ張られて、隆起部166と支持部172の間で平面を形成する。このため、クッション118Bでは、非膨張のパネル128Cが支持部172を支持することができるため、頭部が下方に移動することを抑制できる。
 また、クッション118Bでは、車両用シート110の乗員の頭部が車両前方に移動した場合、平面を形成した非膨張のパネル128Cが頭部を受け止めることで、頭部が前方に移動することを抑制できる。このようにしてクッション118Bによれば、乗員の保護性能を向上させることができる。
 図6は、図5のクッション118Bの変形例を例示する図である。図6(a)、図6(b)は、膨張展開した変形例のクッション118Cを上方、側方からそれぞれ見た状態を示す図である。クッション118Cは、メインチャンバ124Bの隆起部166Aが、膨張展開時に上方かつ前方に隆起している点で、上記クッション118Bと異なる。
 このようなクッション118Cでは、図6(a)および図6(b)に示すように、隆起部166Aが前方に突き出している。このため、図6(a)に示す隆起部166Aの乗員側の面127Dおよび乗員側の反対側の面127Eは、車両前後方向の長さが、図5(b)に示すクッション118Bの隆起部166の乗員側の面127Bおよび乗員側の反対側の面127Cよりも長くなっている。
 したがってクッション118Cでは、サブチャンバ126B、126Cの支持部170、172やパネル128B、128Cによって乗員の頭部を受け止めるだけでなく、隆起部166Aの面127D、127Eによっても乗員の頭部を十分に受け止めることができる。このようにしてクッション118Cによれば、乗員の保護性能を向上させることができる。
 なおクッション118B、118Cでは、パネル128B、128Cによって、メインチャンバ124Bの隆起部166、166Aとサブチャンバ126B、126Cの支持部170、172とをそれぞれつなぐようにしたが、これに限られず、パネル128Cを設けず、パネル128Bのみを設けるようにしてもよい。
 またパネル128、128A、128B、128Cはいずれも非膨張のパネルとしたが、これに限られず、膨張展開時に、メインチャンバ124、124A、124Bと、サブチャンバ126、126A、126B、126Cとをつなぐことが可能であれば、非膨張でないパネルであってもよい。
 以上、添付図面を参照しながら本発明の好適な実施形態について説明したが、本発明は係る例に限定されないことは言うまでもない。当業者であれば、請求の範囲に記載された範疇内において、各種の変更例または修正例に想到し得ることは明らかであり、それらについても当然に本発明の技術的範囲に属するものと了解される。
 また、上記実施形態においては本発明にかかるサイドエアバッグ装置100を自動車に適用した例を説明したが、自動車以外にも航空機や船舶などに適用することも可能であり、同様の作用効果を得ることができる。
 本発明は、車両の側突時などに、車両用シートの乗員の側方へ膨張展開する袋状のクッションを備えたサイドエアバッグ装置に利用することができる。

Claims (11)

  1.  インフレータと、車両用シートのシートバックの側部に設けられ、該インフレータから供給されるガスを利用して前記車両用シートの乗員の側方へ膨張展開する袋状のクッションとを備えるサイドエアバッグ装置において、
     前記クッションは、
     前記インフレータが内部に挿入されていて、前記車両用シートの乗員の側方へ膨張展開するメインチャンバと、
     前記メインチャンバの乗員側の面から前記車両用シートに向かって突出するように設けられていて、該メインチャンバの膨張展開時に前記車両用シートの乗員に向かって突出し該乗員の頭部を受け止めるサブチャンバと、
     前記メインチャンバと前記サブチャンバをつなぐパネルとを含み、
     前記パネルは、
     少なくとも前記サブチャンバの下端部分よりも上方で前記メインチャンバに接続され、前記メインチャンバの乗員側の面よりも乗員側で前記サブチャンバに接続されていることを特徴とするサイドエアバッグ装置。
  2.  前記パネルは、少なくとも3辺を有するパネルであって、
     前記メインチャンバのうち前記サブチャンバの下端部分よりも上方に位置する第1箇所と、前記サブチャンバの前端のうち乗員側に位置する第2箇所と、前記メインチャンバのうち前記サブチャンバの下端部分の前方またはその付近の第3箇所とに接続されていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載のサイドエアバッグ装置。
  3.  前記パネルは、前記クッションの膨張展開時に該クッションの前方に位置していることを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載のサイドエアバッグ装置。
  4.  前記パネルは、前記クッションの前端に位置していることを特徴とする請求項3に記載のサイドエアバッグ装置。
  5.  前記メインチャンバは、前記インフレータから供給されたガスを排気するベントホールを有し、
     前記サブチャンバは、前記メインチャンバとは別体の基布で形成されていて、前記メインチャンバと前記サブチャンバの接続部分で前記ベントホールに連通し該ベントホールから排気されたガスを導入するガス導入口を有することを特徴とする請求項1から4のいずれか1項に記載のサイドエアバッグ装置。
  6.  前記サブチャンバは、前記メインチャンバとは一体の基布で形成されていて、
     前記クッションはさらに、前記メインチャンバと前記サブチャンバとの間に形成され、前記メインチャンバから前記サブチャンバへガスを導入するダクトを有することを特徴とする請求項1から4のいずれか1項に記載のサイドエアバッグ装置。
  7.  前記サブチャンバは、前記車両用シートに着座した乗員の肩部よりも高く頭部よりも低い位置に設定されていることを特徴とする請求項1から6のいずれか1項に記載のサイドエアバッグ装置。
  8.  前記メインチャンバは、膨張展開時に上方に隆起して、前記車両用シートの乗員の側方へ膨張展開する隆起部と、膨張展開時に該隆起部の下方に位置する基部とを含み、
     前記サブチャンバは、前記基部から乗員側に膨張展開して、前記隆起部の乗員側の面よりも前記車両用シートに向かって突出し、乗員の頭部が下方に移動したとき頭部を受け止める支持部を含み、
     前記パネルは、前記メインチャンバの前記隆起部と前記サブチャンバの前記支持部とをつなぐことを特徴とする請求項1に記載のサイドエアバッグ装置。
  9.  前記クッションはさらに、前記基部から乗員側の反対側に膨張展開する他のサブチャンバを含み、
     前記他のサブチャンバは、前記隆起部の乗員側の反対側の面よりも前記車両用シートに隣接する他の車両用シートに向かって突出し、該他の車両用シートの乗員の頭部が下方に移動したとき頭部を受け止める他の支持部を含むことを特徴とする請求項8に記載のサイドエアバッグ装置。
  10.  前記クッションはさらに、前記メインチャンバの前記隆起部と前記他のサブチャンバの前記他の支持部とをつなぐ他のパネルを含むことを特徴とする請求項9に記載のサイドエアバッグ装置。
  11.  前記パネルは、非膨張のパネルであることを特徴とする請求項1から10のいずれか1項に記載のサイドエアバッグ装置。
