Abstract

Description

안전성이 향상된 배터리 팩
본 출원은 2021년 10월 6일자로 출원된 한국 특허출원 번호 제10-2021-0132742호에 대한 우선권주장출원으로서, 해당 출원의 명세서 및 도면에 개시된 모든 내용은 인용에 의해 본 출원에 원용된다.
본 발명은 배터리에 관한 것으로서, 보다 상세하게는 열 폭주(thermal runaway) 등의 이벤트가 발생한 경우 안전성이 향상될 수 있도록 구성된 배터리 팩과 이를 포함하는 에너지 저장 시스템 등에 관한 것이다.
근래에 들어서, 스마트폰, 스마트 패드 등과 같은 휴대용 전자 제품의 수요가 급격하게 증대되고, 로봇, 전기 자동차 등의 상용화가 본격화됨에 따라, 반복적인 충방전이 가능한 고성능 이차 전지에 대한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다.
현재 상용화된 이차 전지로는 니켈 카드뮴 전지, 니켈 수소 전지, 니켈 아연 전지, 리튬 이차 전지 등이 있다. 특히, 리튬 이차 전지는 니켈 계열의 이차 전지에 비해 메모리 효과가 거의 일어나지 않아 충 방전이 자유롭고, 자가 방전율이 매우 낮으며 에너지 밀도가 높은 장점으로 각광을 받고 있다.
이차 전지는 단독으로 사용되기도 하나, 일반적으로는 다수의 이차 전지가 서로 전기적으로 직렬 및/또는 병렬로 연결된 형태로 구성된 경우가 많다. 특히, 다수의 이차 전지는 서로 전기적으로 연결된 상태로 하나의 모듈 케이스 내부에 수납되어, 하나의 배터리 모듈을 구성할 수 있다. 그리고, 배터리 모듈은, 단독으로 사용되거나 또는 둘 이상이 서로 전기적으로 직렬 및/또는 병렬로 연결되어, 배터리 팩 등과 같은 보다 상위 수준의 장치를 구성할 수 있다. 여기서, 배터리 모듈과 배터리 팩은 서로 혼용되어 사용될 수도 있다.
최근, 전력 부족이나 친환경 에너지 등과 같은 이슈가 부각되면서, 생산된 전력을 저장하기 위한 에너지 저장 시스템(ESS; Energy Storage System)이 많은 주목을 받고 있다. 대표적으로, 이러한 에너지 저장 시스템을 이용하면, 스마트 그리드 시스템(Smart Grid System)과 같은 전력 관리 체계 구축이 용이하여, 특정 지역이나 도시 등에서 용이하게 전력 수급 조절이 가능할 수 있다. 또한, 전기 자동차에 대한 상용화가 본격화되면서 전기 자동차를 충전시킬 수 있는 전기 충전소에도 이러한 에너지 저장 시스템이 적용될 수 있다.
이러한 에너지 저장 시스템 등에 사용되는 배터리 팩의 경우, 팩 케이스의 내부 공간에 다수의 배터리 모듈을 수납할 수 있다. 그리고, 각각의 배터리 모듈은, 서로 직렬 및/또는 병렬로 연결되어, 배터리 팩의 출력이나 용량 등이 증가하도록 구성될 수 있다. 더욱이, 배터리 팩의 에너지 밀도를 높이기 위하여, 배터리 모듈들은 매우 좁은 공간에 서로 밀집된 상태로 존재할 수 있다.
그런데, 이와 같은 배터리 팩 구성에 있어서, 특정 배터리 모듈에서 열 폭주(thermal runaway) 등의 열적 이벤트가 발생한 경우, 해당 배터리 모듈로부터 많은 열이 생성되어 방출될 수 있다. 그리고, 이와 같이 방출된 열은 주변의 다른 배터리 모듈로 전달될 수 있으며, 이러한 열 전달로 인해 열 폭주 상황이 다른 배터리 모듈로 전파되는 문제가 발생할 수 있다.
특히, 종래 배터리 팩의 경우, 박스 형태나 모노 프레임(관) 형태로 팩 케이스가 구성되고, 그러한 팩 케이스의 내부 공간에 다수의 배터리 모듈이 수납되는 형태로 구성되는 경우가 많다. 하지만, 이러한 종래 배터리 팩 구성에서, 팩 케이스가 배터리 모듈 간 열 전달을 가중시키는 문제를 일으킬 수 있다. 즉, 열적 이벤트가 발생한 배터리 모듈인 이벤트 모듈로부터 생성된 열은, 인접한 배터리 모듈로 열복사 등의 방식을 통해 직접 전달될 수 있을 뿐 아니라, 팩 케이스를 통해 열전도 방식으로 전달될 수도 있다. 특히, 팩 케이스를 통하는 경우, 이벤트 모듈과 인접하지 않고 멀리 떨어져 있는 배터리 모듈까지 열이 전달되는 문제가 발생할 수 있다.
그러므로, 종래 배터리 팩의 구성에 의하면, 팩 케이스 내부에 포함된 다수의 배터리 모듈 간 열 전달이 쉽게 이루어져, 열 폭주 전파가 제대로 억제되지 못하는 문제가 있다. 그리고, 이러한 열 폭주 전파는, 배터리 팩의 고장이나 손상은 물론이고, 발화를 일으키거나 화재를 확산시킬 수 있어, 큰 피해를 야기시킬 수 있다.
따라서, 본 발명은 상기와 같은 문제점을 해결하기 위해 창안된 것으로서, 배터리 모듈 간 열 전달을 효과적으로 억제시켜 안전성이 향상될 수 있도록 구성된 배터리 팩과 이를 포함하는 응용 장치 등을 제공하는 것을 목적으로 한다.
다만, 본 발명이 해결하고자 하는 기술적 과제는 상술한 과제에 제한되지 않으며, 언급되지 않은 또 다른 과제들은 아래에 기재된 발명의 설명으로부터 당업자에게 명확하게 이해될 수 있을 것이다.
상기와 같은 목적을 달성하기 위한 본 발명의 일 측면에 따른 배터리 팩은, 각각 하나 이상의 배터리 셀을 구비하여 에너지를 저장 및 방출하도록 구성되며 적어도 일 방향으로 적층된 다수의 배터리 모듈; 상기 다수의 배터리 모듈의 적어도 일측에 구비되어, 상기 다수의 배터리 모듈의 외부를 적어도 일부 커버하며, 하나 이상의 개구부가 형성된 팩 케이스; 및 상기 팩 케이스의 개구부에 구비되어 상기 개구부를 밀폐시키며, 상기 다수의 배터리 모듈 중 하나 이상의 배터리 모듈로부터 발생된 열에 의해 용융되어 상기 개구부를 개방시키도록 구성된 멜팅 부재를 포함한다.
여기서, 상기 팩 케이스는, 상기 다수의 배터리 모듈 중 하나 이상의 배터리 모듈로부터 가스가 발생한 경우, 발생된 가스를 가이드하도록 구성되며, 상기 멜팅 부재는, 상기 발생된 가스에 의해 용융되도록 구성될 수 있다.
또한, 상기 다수의 배터리 모듈은, 좌우 방향으로 나란하게 배치되어 전방 또는 후방으로 벤팅 가스가 배출되게 구성되며, 상기 팩 케이스는, 상기 다수의 배터리 모듈의 전방 및 후방 중 적어도 하나에 배치될 수 있다.
또한, 상기 팩 케이스는, 상기 다수의 배터리 모듈의 전방 또는 후방에 위치하는 본체부 및 상기 본체부의 상단과 하단이 절곡된 형태로 구성된 절곡부를 구비할 수 있다.
또한, 상기 개구부는, 상기 본체부 및 상기 절곡부에 모두 형성될 수 있다.
또한, 상기 개구부는, 상기 다수의 배터리 모듈의 적층 방향에 직교하는 방향으로 길게 연장된 형태로 구성될 수 있다.
또한, 상기 개구부는, 적어도 일부분이 상기 다수의 배터리 모듈 사이에 위치하도록 형성될 수 있다.
또한, 상기 팩 케이스는, 상기 다수의 배터리 모듈의 전방 및 후방 중 적어도 일측에 위치하며, 상기 다수의 배터리 모듈은, 적어도 일부분이 상호 간 소정 거리 이격되어, 이격된 부분이 상부 및 하부 중 적어도 한 방향으로 노출되게 구성될 수 있다.

본 발명에 의하면, 다수의 배터리 모듈이 포함된 배터리 팩에서, 배터리 모듈 간 열 전파가 일어나는 것을 억제할 수 있다.
특히, 열 폭주(thermal runaway) 등의 이벤트로 특정 배터리 모듈에서 열이 발생하는 경우, 발생된 열이 팩 케이스를 통해 다른 모듈로 전달되는 것이 효과적으로 차단될 수 있다.
더욱이, 본 발명의 일 실시 측면에 의하면, 이벤트 모듈에서 가스가 벤팅된 이후 열이 계속해서 발생될 수 있는데, 이와 같이 발생된 열의 전달을 감소시킬 수 있다.
따라서, 본 발명의 이러한 측면에 의하면, 배터리 팩의 열적 안전성이 보다 향상될 수 있다.
더욱이, 본 발명의 일 실시 구성에 의하면, 팩 케이스의 덕트 기능이나 구조적 안정성은 확보하면서도, 모듈 간 열 전달 차단 효과가 향상될 수 있다.
이외에도 본 발명의 여러 실시예에 의하여, 여러 다른 추가적인 효과가 달성될 수 있다. 이러한 본 발명의 여러 효과들에 대해서는 각 실시예에서 상세하게 설명하거나, 당업자가 쉽게 이해할 수 있는 효과에 대해서는 그 설명을 생략한다.

도 1은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 배터리 팩의 구성을 개략적으로 나타내는 사시도이고, 도 2는 도 1의 일부 구성에 대한 분리 사시도이다.
도 1 및 도 2를 참조하면, 본 발명에 따른 배터리 팩은, 배터리 모듈(100), 팩 케이스(200) 및 멜팅 부재(300)를 포함한다.
상기 배터리 모듈(100)은, 하나 이상의 배터리 셀(110)을 구비하여 에너지를 저장 및 방출하도록 구성될 수 있다. 여기서, 각각의 배터리 셀(110)은, 이차 전지를 의미할 수 있다. 또한, 배터리 모듈(100)은, 배터리 팩에 다수 포함될 수 있다. 특히, 배터리 팩의 용량 및/또는 출력 등의 향상을 위해, 배터리 모듈(100)은, 도 1 및 도 2에 도시된 바와 같이, 배터리 팩에 다수 포함될 수 있다. 이때, 다수의 배터리 모듈(100)은 적어도 일 방향으로 적층될 수 있다. 일례로, 도 1 및 도 2에서는 8개의 배터리 모듈(100)이 X축 방향(좌우 방향)으로 배치된 형태가 도시되어 있다.
이러한 배터리 모듈(100)의 보다 구체적인 구성의 일례는 도 3 및 도 4에 보다 구체적으로 도시되어 있다.
도 3은, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 배터리 팩에 포함된 하나의 배터리 모듈(100)을 나타내는 사시도이다. 또한, 도 4는 도 3의 일부 구성을 분리 또는 제거한 형태의 부분 사시도이다.
도 3 및 도 4를 참조하면, 상기 배터리 모듈(100)은, 배터리 셀(110)(이차 전지)을 구비할 수 있다.
여기서, 배터리 셀(110)은, 전극 조립체, 전해액(전해질) 및 전지 케이스를 구비할 수 있다. 도 3 및 도 4에서는 파우치형 이차 전지가 도시되어 있으나, 이차 전지의 다른 형태, 이를테면 원통형 전지나 각형 전지가 배터리 모듈(100)에 포함될 수도 있다.
이러한 이차 전지는, 다수 포함될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 도면에 도시된 바와 같이, 다수의 파우치형 이차 전지가 눕혀진 상태에서 상하 방향으로 적층된 형태로 셀 어셈블리를 구성할 수 있다. 이때, 각 전지의 전극 리드(111)는 서로 직접 접촉되거나 버스바 등을 통해 전기적으로 연결될 수 있다.
또한, 상기 배터리 모듈(100)은 모듈 단자(140)를 구비할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 배터리 모듈(100)은 전방 및/또는 후방 측에 각 배터리 셀(110)의 전극 리드(111)가 위치하고, 그러한 전극 리드(111)와 전기적으로 연결된 형태로 모듈 단자(140)가 위치할 수 있다. 특히, 모듈 단자(140)는, 배터리 모듈(100)의 전방 및/또는 후방 측에 위치하여, 전방 및/또는 후방으로 돌출된 형태로 구성될 수 있다. 더욱이, 각 배터리 모듈(100)은, 모듈 단자(140)로서 양극 모듈 단자(+)와 음극 모듈 단자(-)를 구비할 수 있다. 이때, 양극 모듈 단자(+)와 음극 모듈 단자(-)는, 배터리 모듈(100)의 동일한 측면, 이를테면 도면에 도시된 바와 같이 전방(-Y축 방향) 측면에 위치할 수 있다. 이러한 모듈 단자(140)는, 배터리 모듈(100)에 포함된 이차 전지(배터리 셀(110))가 배터리 모듈(100) 외부의 다른 구성요소, 이를테면 다른 배터리 모듈(100)과 전기적으로 연결되도록 할 수 있다.
상기 팩 케이스(200)는, 다수의 배터리 모듈(100)의 적어도 일측에 구비될 수 있다. 그리고, 팩 케이스(200)는, 이러한 배터리 모듈(100)의 외부 중 적어도 일부를 커버하도록 구성될 수 있다. 더욱이, 팩 케이스(200)는, 내부 공간을 한정하고, 그러한 내부 공간에 다수의 배터리 모듈(100)을 수납하도록 구성될 수 있다. 즉, 팩 케이스(200)는, 배터리 모듈(100) 적층체의 외측 중 적어도 일부를 둘러싸는 형태로 구성될 수 있다.
예를 들어, 상기 팩 케이스(200)는, 도 1 및 도 2에 도시된 바와 같이, 전방 케이스(210), 후방 케이스(220) 및 측부 케이스(230)를 구비할 수 있다. 이 경우, 팩 케이스(200)는, 배터리 모듈(100) 적층체의 전단부, 후단부 및 좌측부에 위치하여, 배터리 모듈(100) 적층체의 해당 부분을 커버한다고 할 수 있다.
이러한 팩 케이스(200)의 적어도 일측에는 팩 단자가 제공될 수 있다. 이러한 팩 단자는, 배터리 팩에 대하여 외부의 충전 장치 내지 방전 장치와 전원을 주고 받을 수 있는 단자로서 기능할 수 있다.
특히, 본 발명에 있어서, 상기 팩 케이스(200)는, 도 2에서 O로 표시된 부분과 같이, 하나 이상의 개구부가 형성될 수 있다. 이러한 개구부(O)는, 팩 케이스(200)를 관통하는 형태로 구성될 수 있다. 즉, 개구부(O)는, 팩 케이스(200)에 대하여 내부와 외부 사이를 관통하는 형태로 구성될 수 있다. 더욱이, 개구부(O)는, 팩 케이스(200)에 다수 형성될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 도 2에 도시된 바를 참조하면, 전방 케이스(210)와 후방 케이스(220) 각각에는 다수의 개구부(O)가 형성될 수 있다.
이러한 개구부(O)는, 팩 케이스(200)의 중앙 부분을 관통하는 홀 형태로 형성되거나, 팩 케이스(200)의 단부에서 소정 지점까지 절취된 형태로 형성될 수도 있다.
상기 멜팅 부재(300)는, 팩 케이스(200)에 형성된 개구부(O)에 구비되어 개구부(O)를 밀폐시키도록 구성될 수 있다. 이때, 멜팅 부재(300)는, 다양한 방식으로 팩 케이스(200)와 결합될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 멜팅 부재(300)는, 팩 케이스(200)에 형성된 상기 개구부(O)나 별도로 형성된 홈 등에 삽입 체결된 형태로, 팩 케이스(200)에 결합 고정될 수 있다. 또는, 상기 멜팅 부재(300)는, 접착제나 열융착, 웰딩, 볼팅 등 다른 다양한 체결 방식으로, 팩 케이스(200)에 결합될 수 있다. 그리고, 멜팅 부재(300)는, 팩 케이스(200)에 결합되어 개구부(O)의 일부 또는 전체를 막도록 구성될 수 있다. 즉, 멜팅 부재(300)는, 개구부(O)를 통해 팩 케이스(200)의 내부가 외부로 노출되지 않도록 개구부(O)에 결합될 수 있다.
특히, 상기 멜팅 부재(300)는, 열에 의해 용융되어 개구부(O)를 개방시키도록 구성될 수 있다. 더욱이, 배터리 팩에 포함된 다수의 배터리 모듈(100) 중 하나 이상의 배터리 모듈(100)에서 열 폭주 등의 이벤트가 발생한 경우, 열이 발생할 수 있다. 이러한 열은, 배터리 모듈(100) 측에서 생성된 발열이나, 배터리 모듈(100) 측으로부터 배출된 벤팅 가스나 화염 등으로부터 형성될 수 있다. 상기 멜팅 부재(300)는, 이처럼 어떠한 배터리 모듈(100)로부터 열이 발생한 경우, 이러한 열에 의해 용융 가능하도록 구성될 수 있다. 이를 위해, 멜팅 부재(300)는, 배터리 모듈(100)로부터 발생된 열에 의해 용융되는 형태 내지 재질로 구성될 수 있다. 더욱이, 상기 멜팅 부재(300)는, 팩 케이스(200)보다 용융점이 낮은 재질로 구성될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 팩 케이스(200), 특히 도 2의 전방 케이스(210)와 후방 케이스(220)는 스틸 재질로 구성되고, 상기 멜팅 부재(300)는, 플라스틱 재질로 구성될 수 있다. 플라스틱 재질은 스틸 재질보다 용융점이 낮을 수 있으므로, 배터리 모듈(100)로부터 생성된 열에 의해 팩 케이스(200)는 용융되지 않더라도 멜팅 부재(300)는 용융될 수 있다.
상기 멜팅 부재(300)는, 배터리 모듈(100)로부터 발생된 열에 의해 용융될 수 있고, 이와 같은 용융에 의해 개구부(O)를 개방시키도록 구성될 수 있다.
이에 대해서는, 도 5 내지 도 7을 참조하여 보다 상세하게 설명하도록 한다.
도 5는, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 배터리 팩의 구성을 상부에서 바라본 형태의 단면도이다. 도 6 및 도 7은, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 배터리 팩의 일부 구성에 대하여, 정면에서 바라본 형태의 도면으로서, 이벤트 발생 전과 후의 구성을 각각 나타낸다. 예를 들어, 도 6 및 도 7은, 도 5의 A1 부분을 정면에서 바라본 형태의 도면이라 할 수 있다. 보다 구체적으로, 도 6은 멜팅 부재(300)가 용융되기 전의 구성을 나타내고, 도 7은 멜팅 부재(300)가 용융된 후의 구성을 나타낸다.
먼저, 도 5를 참조하면, 배터리 팩에 포함된 다수의 배터리 모듈(100)(M1~M8) 중 어느 하나의 배터리 모듈(100)(M5)에서 열 폭주 이벤트가 발생한 경우, 화살표로 표시된 바와 같이, 해당 배터리 모듈(100)(M5)로부터 팩 케이스(200) 측으로 열이 전달될 수 있다.
이때, 팩 케이스(200) 측에는, 도 6에 도시된 바와 같이, 다수의 멜팅 부재(300)가 존재할 수 있다. 이때, 도 7의 A2로 표시된 부분과 같이, 어느 하나의 배터리 모듈(100)(M5)로부터 열이 생성되어 전달되면, 적어도 일부 멜팅 부재(300)는, 배터리 모듈(100)(M5)로부터 전달된 열에 의해 용융될 수 있다. 따라서, 도 7에 도시된 바와 같이, 다수의 멜팅 부재(300) 중 적어도 일부가 용융되고, 용융된 멜팅 부재(300)는 개구부(O)로부터 이탈될 수 있다. 따라서, 멜팅 부재(300)는, 적어도 일부 개구부(O)를 더 이상 막지 못하고 개방되도록 할 수 있다.
이와 같은 실시 구성에 의하면, 특정 배터리 모듈(100)로부터 열이 비정상적으로 발생한 경우, 팩 케이스(200)의 일부 개구부(O)를 개방시킴으로써, 배터리 모듈(100) 간 열 전달이 효과적으로 차단되도록 할 수 있다. 특히, 도 5의 실시 구성에서 모듈 M5로부터 비정상적인 열이 생성된 경우, 생성된 열은 도 7에서 화살표로 표시된 바와 같이 팩 케이스(200)를 따라 배터리 모듈(100)의 적층 방향인 좌측 내지 우측 방향으로 이동하려고 할 수 있다. 이때, 멜팅 부재(300)는, 모듈 M5로부터 배출된 열에 의해 용융됨으로써, 도 7에 도시된 바와 같이 팩 케이스(200)의 개구부(O)가 노출될 수 있다. 그러면, 개구부(O)에 의해 수평 방향(도 7의 X축 방향)으로의 열 전달이 차단됨으로써, 다른 배터리 모듈(100)로 열이 전달되는 것이 억제될 수 있다.
예를 들어, 도 5의 실시 구성에서, 모듈 M5로부터 열이 생성되는 경우, 생성된 열이 인접한 다른 모듈, 이를테면 모듈 M4 및 모듈 M6로 전달되는 것이 효과적으로 억제될 수 있다. 또한, 팩 케이스(200)를 통한 열전도 방식으로, 인접하지 않은 다른 배터리 모듈(100), 이를테면 모듈 M3나 M7로 열이 전달되는 것이 방지될 수 있다. 더욱이, 도 7에 도시된 바와 같이, 일부 개구부(O)가 노출되면, 해당 개구부(O)로는 공기가 유출입되거나 존재할 수 있다. 따라서, 이러한 개구부(O)에 의한 단열 효과는 더욱 증대될 수 있다.
더욱이, 멜팅 부재(300)의 열전도율이 팩 케이스(200)의 열전도율보다 낮은 경우, 멜팅 부재(300)가 용융되기 전에도, 팩 케이스(200)에 의한 수평 방향 열전달은 억제될 수 있다.
상기 팩 케이스(200)는, 배터리 팩에 포함된 다수의 배터리 모듈(100) 중 하나 이상의 배터리 모듈(100)로부터 가스가 발생한 경우, 가스를 가이드하도록 구성될 수 있다. 특히, 팩 케이스(200)는, 벤팅 가스가 내부 표면을 따라 흐를 수 있도록 함으로써, 가스의 배출 방향을 가이드할 수 있다. 이 경우, 팩 케이스(200)의 적어도 일부는, 배터리 팩에서 덕트로서 기능한다고 할 수 있다. 그리고, 팩 케이스(200)에는, 벤팅 가스가 외부로 배출될 수 있도록, 적어도 일측에 배출구(H1)가 형성될 수 있다.
이와 같은 구성에서, 상기 멜팅 부재(300)는, 배터리 모듈(100)로부터 배출된 벤팅 가스에 의해 용융되도록 구성될 수 있다. 즉, 배터리 모듈(100)로부터 배출된 벤팅 가스는 높은 온도를 가질 수 있다. 더욱이, 배터리 모듈(100)로부터 배출된 벤팅 가스에는, 화염이나 스파크, 고온의 전극 내지 활물질 입자 등이 포함될 수 있다. 따라서, 멜팅 부재(300)는, 이러한 고온의 벤팅 가스와 접촉하거나 인접하게 됨으로써, 용융될 수 있다.
특히, 배터리 팩에 포함된 다수의 배터리 모듈(100)은, 도 2 및 도 5에 도시된 바와 같이, 좌우 방향으로 나란하게 배치될 수 있다. 그리고, 각각의 배터리 모듈(100)은, 도 5에 도시된 바와 같이, 벤팅 가스가 전방 또는 후방으로 배출되게 구성될 수 있다.
특히, 상기 배터리 모듈(100)은, 도 3 및 도 4에 도시된 바와 같이, 모듈 케이스(120) 및 버스바 어셈블리(130)를 구비할 수 있다.
여기서, 모듈 케이스(120)는, 하나 이상의 이차 전지를 내부 공간에 수용하는 형태로 구성될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 모듈 케이스(120)는, 도면에 도시된 바와 같이, 상부 플레이트(121), 하부 플레이트(122) 및 측부 플레이트(123)를 구비할 수 있다. 그리고, 이러한 다수의 플레이트가 서로 결합되어 한정된 내부 공간에 전지 어셈블리가 수납될 수 있다.
여기서, 모듈 케이스(120)에 포함되는 일부 플레이트, 이를테면 하부 플레이트(122) 및 측부 플레이트(123)(좌측 플레이트, 우측 플레이트)는, 서로 일체화된 형태로 구성될 수도 있다. 이 경우, 하부 플레이트(122)와 측부 플레이트(123)의 일체화된 형태는 대략 U자 형태일 수 있다. 또는, 하부 플레이트(122)와 측부 플레이트(123), 그리고 상부 플레이트(121)가 서로 일체화된 관 형상의, 모노프레임 형태로 구성될 수도 있다. 이러한 모듈 케이스(120)의 각 플레이트는, 서로 결합된 상태에서 내부 공간을 한정할 수 있다. 그리고, 이러한 내부 공간에 셀 어셈블리가 수용될 수 있다.
상기 모듈 케이스(120)는, 적어도 일측이 개방되도록 구성될 수 있다. 그리고, 이러한 개방 부분에 셀 어셈블리의 전극 리드(111)가 위치하도록 구성될 수 있다.
특히, 배터리 모듈(100)은, 버스바 어셈블리(130)를 구비하여, 모듈 케이스(120)의 개방 부분에 결합되도록 할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 도 3 및 도 4에 도시된 바와 같이, 버스바 어셈블리(130)는, 모듈 케이스(120)의 전방 및 후방 개방 부분에 결합될 수 있다. 이러한 모듈 케이스(120)의 전방 및 후방 부분에는 전지 어셈블리의 전극 리드(111)가 위치할 수 있다. 그리고, 버스바 어셈블리(130)는 전극 리드(111)와 결합될 수 있다. 보다 구체적인 예로서, 버스바 어셈블리(130)에는, 도 3 및 도 4에 도시된 바와 같이, 버스바 하우징(131) 및 모듈 버스바(132)가 구비될 수 있다.
여기서, 버스바 하우징(131)은 전기적으로 절연성 재질, 이를테면 플라스틱 재질로 구성될 수 있다. 그리고, 버스바 하우징(131)은, 모듈 버스바(132)가 안착되어 고정되도록 구성될 수 있다. 그리고, 모듈 버스바(132)는, 전기적으로 전도성 재질, 이를테면 금속 재질로 구성될 수 있다. 그리고, 모듈 버스바(132)는, 둘 이상의 전극 리드(111) 사이를 전기적으로 연결시키거나, 하나 이상의 전극 리드(111)에 연결되어 BMS(Battery Management System)와 같은 제어 유닛으로 센싱 정보를 전달하도록 구성될 수 있다.
이와 같이, 본 발명에 따른 배터리 팩에 포함된 배터리 모듈(100)의 경우, 특정 부분, 이를테면 버스바 어셈블리(130)가 위치하는 전방 측 및 후방 측만 개방되고 나머지 부분은 밀폐되도록 구성될 수 있다. 이 경우, 배터리 모듈(100) 내부에서 벤팅 가스 등이 발생하는 경우, 벤팅 가스 등은 모듈 케이스(120)가 개방된 부분, 이를테면 버스바 어셈블리(130)가 위치하는 전방 측 및 후방 측으로만 배출되도록 유도될 수 있다. 특히, 버스바 어셈블리(130)는, 전극 리드(111)가 통과할 수 있도록 슬릿이 형성될 수 있다. 이때, 모듈 내부의 벤팅 가스(스파크, 화염 등 포함)는, 이러한 버스바 어셈블리(130)의 슬릿을 통해, 도 5에 표시된 바와 같이, 모듈 케이스(120)의 전방 및 후방 측을 향하여 모듈 케이스(120) 외부로 배출될 수 있다.
이와 같은 구성에서, 상기 팩 케이스(200)는, 다수의 배터리 모듈(100)의 전방 및 후방 중 적어도 하나에 배치될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 도 2 및 도 5 등에 도시된 바와 같이, 팩 케이스(200)로서 전방 케이스(210)와 후방 케이스(220)는, 8개의 배터리 모듈(100)의 전방 및 후방 측에 각각 배치되어 전방 및 후방 측 덕트로서 기능할 수 있다.
본 발명의 이와 같은 실시 구성에 의하면, 다수의 배터리 모듈(100) 중 어떠한 배터리 모듈(100)에서 벤팅 가스가 발생하는 경우, 적어도 소정 시간 동안은 전방 케이스(210) 및/또는 후방 케이스(220)에 의해, 벤팅 가스가 배출구(H1) 측으로 유도될 수 있다. 그리고, 벤팅 가스가 어느 정도 배출된 이후에는, 벤팅 가스의 배출량이 점차 줄어들게 될 수 있다. 그리고, 벤팅 가스가 배출된 과정에서, 멜팅 부재(300)는 벤팅 가스의 열로 인해 적어도 일부분이 용융될 수 있으며, 이로 인해 도 7에 도시된 바와 같이, 팩 케이스(200)의 개구부(O) 중 적어도 일부분이 개방될 수 있다. 그리고, 팩 케이스(200)의 개구부(O)가 개방된 이후에는, 개구부(O)로 인해 팩 케이스(200), 특히 덕트를 통한 열전도가 억제될 수 있다. 따라서, 팩 케이스(200), 특히 덕트로서 기능하는 팩 케이스(200)를 통한 열전도에 의해 배터리 모듈(100) 간 열폭주 전파가 일어나는 것이 보다 효과적으로 방지될 수 있다.
한편, 팩 케이스(200), 이를테면 전방 케이스(210) 및 후방 케이스(220)가 덕트로서 기능하는 경우, 특정 배터리 모듈(100)에서 열적 이벤트가 발생한 초기에는, 일정 시간 동안 팩 케이스(200)는 덕트 기능이 그대로 유지되도록 구성될 수 있다. 이를 위해, 멜팅 부재(300)는, 벤팅 가스 배출 시 곧바로 용융되지 않고, 소정 시간 동안은 유지될 수 있는 재질 내지 형태로 구성될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 전방 케이스(210) 및 후방 케이스(220)가 스틸 재질로 구성된 경우, 멜팅 부재(300)는, 이러한 팩 케이스(200)의 재질보다는 용융점이 낮은 재질로 구성되되, 일정 온도 이상의 용융점을 갖는 내열성 플라스틱 재질로 구성될 수 있다. 여기서, 내열성 플라스틱으로는, 본 발명의 출원 시점에 공지된 다양한 플라스틱 재료가 이용될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 본 발명의 멜팅 부재(300)로서, 실리콘계, 플루오린계, 페놀수지계 등 다양한 계열의 내열성 플라스틱이 이용될 수 있다. 보다 구체적으로, 상기 멜팅 부재(300)는, 300~600℃의 온도 조건 및 공기 중에서 기계적 강도가 유지되는 플라스틱 재질로서, 방향족 폴리아미드, 폴리이미드, 폴리설폰, 폴리벤조이미다졸, 폴리페닐렌옥사이드 등의 물질을 함유할 수 있다.
본 발명의 이러한 실시 구성에 의하면, 벤팅 가스가 배출되는 초기에는, 멜팅 부재(300)가 팩 케이스(200)의 개구부(O)를 폐쇄시킴으로써, 팩 케이스(200)의 덕트 기능이 그대로 유지될 수 있다. 그러나, 소정 시간이 경과하여 벤팅 가스의 배출이 일정 수준 이하로 감소하거나 없어지게 된 경우, 팩 케이스(200)의 덕트 기능 유지 필요성은 줄어들 수 있다. 이때, 멜팅 부재(300)가 용융되어 팩 케이스(200)의 개구부(O)가 노출된 상태가 되면, 개구부(O)로 인해 팩 케이스(200)를 통한 열전도는 억제될 수 있다.
다만, 이러한 멜팅 부재(300)의 재질이나 특성, 특히 멜팅 부재(300)의 용융점 등은, 배터리 셀(110)이나 배터리 모듈(100), 배터리 팩의 종류, 구조, 성능 등에 따라 다양하게 선택될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 멜팅 부재(300)는, 해당 배터리 팩의 열 폭주 시 벤팅 가스로 인한 상승 온도 및 벤팅 가스 배출 시간을 고려하여 그 재질이 선택될 수 있다. 보다 구체적인 예로서, 멜팅 부재(300)는, 배터리 팩의 열 폭주 시 벤팅 가스 배출 시간 이후에 용융될 수 있는 내열성 플라스틱 재질로 형성될 수 있다.
상기 팩 케이스(200)는, 상단과 하단이 절곡된 형태로 구성될 수 있다. 이에 대해서는, 도 8을 참조하여 보다 구체적으로 설명한다.
도 8은, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 배터리 팩에서 일부 팩 케이스(200)의 구성을 나타내는 사시도이다. 특히, 도 8은, 도 1 및 도 2에 도시된 배터리 팩에서 후방 케이스(220)의 구성을 확대하여 나타낸 도면이라 할 수 있다. 다만, 도 8에서는 설명의 편의를 위해, 일부 멜팅 부재(300)가 팩 케이스(200)의 일부 개구부(O)에서 분리된 형태로 도시되어 있다.
도 8을 참조하면, 상기 팩 케이스(200), 특히 전방 케이스(210) 및 후방 케이스(220)는 본체부(201) 및 절곡부(202)를 구비할 수 있다. 여기서, 본체부(201)는, 다수의 배터리 모듈(100)의 전방 또는 후방에 위치할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 도 8에 도시된 바와 같은, 후방 케이스(220)의 본체부(201)는, 상하 방향으로 세워진 형태로, 8개의 배터리 모듈(100)에 대하여 후방 측에 위치할 수 있다. 즉, 후방 케이스(220)의 본체부(201)는, 각 배터리 모듈(100)의 후방 측, 이를테면 각 배터리 모듈(100)의 후방 측 버스바 어셈블리(130)에 대면되는 형태로 구성될 수 있다. 다른 예로, 전방 케이스(210)의 본체부(201)는, 상하 방향으로 세워진 형태로, 각 배터리 모듈(100)의 전방 측에 대면되는 형태로 위치할 수 있다. 특히, 배터리 모듈(100)의 전방 및 후방 측으로 벤팅 가스가 배출될 수 있으므로, 본체부(201)는, 이러한 벤팅 가스의 배출 방향에 직교하는 방향으로 표면이 배치되어 있다고 할 수 있다.
그리고, 절곡부(202)는, 본체부(201)의 상단과 하단에서 절곡된 형태로 구성될 수 있다. 특히, 절곡부(202)는, 본체부(201)의 상단과 하단에서 배터리 모듈(100)이 위치하는 내측 방향으로 절곡된 형태로 구성될 수 있다. 그리고, 이러한 절곡부(202)는, 다수의 배터리 모듈(100)의 전단부 또는 후단부의 상부 및 하부를 감싸도록 구성될 수 있다.
상기 본체부(201)와 절곡부(202)는 모두 판상으로 구성될 수 있다. 특히, 본체부(201)와 절곡부(202)는 하나의 플레이트로서 일체화된 형태로 구성될 수 있다. 이 경우, 본체부(201)와 절곡부(202)는, 하나의 플레이트의 상단과 하단이 각각 동일한 방향, 즉 배터리 모듈(100)이 위치하는 방향으로 절곡된 형태로 구성될 수 있다.
이와 같은 실시 구성에서, 절곡부(202)의 일부는 배터리 모듈(100)의 전단 내지 후단과 결합 고정될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 절곡부(202)의 단부 측에는, 도 8에서 H2로 표시된 부분과 같이 체결홀이 형성될 수 있다. 그리고, 이러한 체결홀(H2)을 통해 다수의 배터리 모듈(100)과 볼팅 결합될 수 있다. 이러한 절곡부(202)와 배터리 모듈(100)의 체결 구성은, 다른 다양한 체결 방식으로 구현될 수도 있다.
본 발명의 이러한 실시 구성의 경우, 팩 케이스(200)의 구성이 간단하고, 팩 케이스(200)와 배터리 모듈(100)이 용이하게 조립될 수 있다. 또한, 이러한 실시 구성에 의하면, 팩 케이스(200)에 의한 덕트 기능이 쉽게 구현될 수 있다. 즉, 팩 케이스(200)의 본체부(201)와 배터리 모듈(100)의 전단 내지 후단 사이에 이격 공간이 형성된 경우, 이러한 이격 공간으로 벤팅 가스가 흐를 수 있다.
이와 같은 팩 케이스(200) 구성에서, 개구부(O)는 본체부(201)와 절곡부(202)에 모두 형성될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 도 8에 도시된 후방 케이스(220)의 구성을 참조하면, 개구부(O)는, 본체부(201) 및 상단 절곡부(202)와 하단 절곡부(202)에 모두 형성될 수 있다. 즉, 개구부(O)는, 본체부(201)에 형성된 제1 개구부(O1) 및 절곡부(202)에 형성된 제2 개구부(O2)를 구비할 수 있다. 더욱이, 제1 개구부(O1)와 제2 개구부(O2)는, 본체부(201)와 절곡부(202)에서 각각 홀 형태로 형성될 수 있다. 여기서, 제1 개구부(O1)와 제2 개구부(O2)는, 서로 연결되지 않고, 소정 거리 이격된 형태로 형성될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 제1 개구부(O1)는, 본체부(201)의 상단 일부와 하단 일부를 제외한 중앙 부분을 관통하는 형태로 형성되고, 제2 개구부(O2)는, 절곡부(202)의 전단 일부와 후단 일부를 제외한 중앙 부분을 관통하는 형태로 형성될 수 있다.
그리고, 이러한 개구부(O) 각각에는 멜팅 부재(300)가 결합될 수 있다. 즉, 이러한 실시 구성에서, 멜팅 부재(300)는, 제1 개구부(O1)에 결합되는 제1 부재(301) 및 제2 개구부(O2)에 결합되는 제2 부재(302)를 구비할 수 있다.
본 발명의 이러한 실시 구성에 의하면, 팩 케이스(200)의 구조적 안정성이 일정 수준 이상 확보되면서, 멜팅 부재(300)가 용융되어 팩 케이스(200)의 개구부(O)가 노출 시, 개구부(O)를 통한 열전도 억제 효과가 보다 향상될 수 있다. 더욱이, 팩 케이스(200)에 대하여, 상단부터 하단까지 개구부(O)가 형성됨으로써, 배터리 모듈(100) 적층 방향, 즉 좌우 방향으로의 열전달이 효과적으로 제한될 수 있다.
특히, 상기 실시 구성에서, 제1 개구부(O1)와 제2 개구부(O2)는 일직선 형태로 형성될 수 있다. 이에 대해서는, 도 9를 참조하여 보다 구체적으로 설명한다. 도 9는, 도 8에 도시된 팩 케이스(200)에 대하여 상단과 하단 절곡부(202)를 펼친 형태의 구성을 나타낸 도면이다. 즉, 도 9는, 도 8의 구성에 대한 전개도라 할 수 있다. 다만, 도 9에서는 도시의 편의를 위해 멜팅 부재(300)는 제외되도록 한다. 도 9에서, 점선 C1 및 C2를 중심으로 각각 대략 90° 절곡시키면, 도 8에 도시된 바와 같은 팩 케이스(200) 구성이 마련될 수 있다.
도 9를 참조하면, 본체부(201)에 형성된 1개의 제1 개구부(O1)와 상단 절곡부(202)와 하단 절곡부(202)에 형성된 2개의 제2 개구부(O2)는 서로 일직선이 되는 형태로 배열될 수 있다. 즉, 도 9의 실시 구성에 도시된 바와 같이, 3개의 개구부(O1, O2)는 일직선인 C3 선에 중심부가 배열될 수 있도록 하나의 직선 상에 배치될 수 있다. 더욱이, 도 9의 실시 구성에서는, 8개의 제1 개구부(O1)는 각각, 상단 절곡부(202)에 형성된 서로 다른 1개의 제2 개구부(O2) 및 하단 절곡부(202)에 형성된 서로 다른 1개의 제2 개구부(O2)와 일직선이 되도록 배치될 수 있다.
본 발명의 이러한 실시 구성에 의하면, 팩 케이스(200)를 통해 열이 전달되는 경로를 줄일 수 있다. 예를 들어, 도 9의 구성을 참조하면, 상기 실시 구성에서 팩 케이스(200)를 통해 수평 방향(X축 방향)으로 열이 전달될 수 있는 경로는, A3 및 A3'으로 표시된 부분과 같이, 제1 개구부(O1)와 제2 개구부(O2) 사이의 공간이라 할 수 있다. 상기 실시 구성에서는, 제1 개구부(O1)와 제2 개구부(O2) 사이의 거리가 짧게 형성됨으로써, 배터리 모듈(100)의 적층 방향(X축 방향)으로 열이 전달될 수 있는 경로가 감소할 수 있다. 따라서, 팩 케이스(200)를 통한 배터리 모듈(100) 간 열전달을 보다 효과적으로 억제할 수 있다.
또한, 적어도 일부 개구부(O)는, 일 방향으로 길게 연장된 형태로 구성될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 도 9를 참조하면, 제1 개구부(O1)는, 상하 방향(Z축 방향)으로 길게 연장된 형태로 구성될 수 있다. 이때, 다수의 배터리 모듈(100)의 적층 방향은 X축 방향이라 할 수 있으므로, Z축 방향은 배터리 모듈(100)의 적층 방향에 직교하는 방향이라 할 수 있다. 따라서, 제1 개구부(O1)는, 배터리 모듈(100)의 적층 방향에 직교하는 방향으로 길게 연장된 형태라 할 수 있다.
더욱이, 도 9를 참조하면, 제1 개구부(O1)의 상단과 하단에는 각각 제2 개구부(O2)가 형성될 수 있다. 따라서, 제1 개구부(O1)는 제2 개구부(O2)가 위치하는 방향으로 길게 연장된 형태로 구성되어 있다고도 할 수 있다.
본 발명의 이러한 구성에 의하면, 팩 케이스(200)에 대하여, 개구부(O)의 면적을 크게 하지 않으면서도 배터리 모듈(100)의 적층 방향으로의 열전달 억제 성능이 확보되도록 할 수 있다. 즉, 상기 실시 구성에 의하면, 팩 케이스(200)를 통해 수평 방향으로 열이 전도되는 것을 개구부(O)가 차단시킬 수 있다. 뿐만 아니라, 상기 실시 구성에서는 수평 방향으로 다수의 개구부(O)가 배치될 수 있는데, 개구부(O) 간 수평 방향 이격 거리는 일정 수준 이상 길게 확보될 수 있다. 따라서, 팩 케이스(200)의 기계적 안정성이 확보될 수 있다. 특히, 개구부(O)에는 멜팅 부재(300)가 결합될 수 있는데, 멜팅 부재(300)의 열적, 기계적 안정성은 팩 케이스(200)보다 떨어질 수 있다. 상기 실시 구성에 의하면, 팩 케이스(200)의 면적이 넓게 확보됨으로써, 정상적인 상태에서 팩 케이스(200)에 의한 기계적 안정성이 확보될 수 있을 뿐 아니라, 벤팅 가스가 배출되는 비상 상황에서도 벤팅 가스의 고온, 고압 등에 팩 케이스(200)가 잘 견딜 수 있다. 따라서, 팩 케이스(200)의 구조적 안정성이 저해되는 문제, 특히, 비상 상황에서 팩 케이스(200)가 붕괴되는 문제 등이 예방될 수 있다.
상기 개구부(O)는, 적어도 일부분이 다수의 배터리 모듈(100) 사이에 위치하도록 형성될 수 있다. 이에 대해서는, 도 10을 참조하여 보다 구체적으로 설명한다.
도 10은, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 팩 케이스(200)의 일부 구성을 개략적으로 나타내는 정면도이다. 예를 들어, 도 10은, 도 2의 배터리 팩 구성에서 전방 케이스(210)를 배터리 팩의 외측에서 바라본 형태의 일부 구성에 대한 도면이라 할 수 있다. 다만, 설명의 편의를 위해, 팩 케이스(200)의 내측에 위치한 배터리 모듈(100)에 대해서는, 점선 형태로 도시되도록 한다.
도 10을 참조하면, 팩 케이스(200)에 개구부(O)가 형성되어 있다. 이때, 개구부(O)는, 적어도 일부분이 각 배터리 모듈(100)(M1, M2, M3) 사이에 위치하는 형태로 형성될 수 있다. 즉, 도 10에서 좌측에 위치한 개구부(O)는, 상하 방향(Z축 방향)으로 연장 형성되되, 수평 방향(X축 방향)으로 M1 모듈과 M2 모듈 사이에 위치할 수 있다. 또한, 도 10에서 우측에 위치한 개구부(O)는, 수평 방향(X축 방향)으로 M2 모듈과 M3 모듈 사이에 위치할 수 있다. 특히, 개구부(O)는, 수평 방향 중심선이 각 배터리 모듈(100) 사이에 위치할 수 있다.
본 발명의 이러한 구성에 의하면, 개구부(O)를 통한 모듈 간 열전달 억제 성능이 확실하게 구현될 수 있다. 뿐만 아니라, 이 경우, 배터리 모듈(100)의 전방 또는 후방 측으로 배출되는 벤팅 가스에 의해 너무 빠르게 멜팅 부재(300)가 제거되는 것을 방지할 수 있다. 즉, 배터리 모듈(100)로부터 벤팅 가스가 배출될 때에는, 도 5에 도시된 바와 같이, 배터리 모듈(100)의 전방 또는 후방 측으로 벤팅 가스가 배출될 수 있다. 이때, 개구부(O)가 배터리 모듈(100)의 벤팅 가스 배출 부분에 직접 대면하는 경우, 개구부(O)에 구비된 멜팅 부재(300)는 벤팅 가스의 높은 압력에 의해 의도된 것보다 빠르게 개구부(O)로부터 분리되거나 제거될 수 있다. 만일, 개구부(O)가 너무 빨리 개방되면, 벤팅 가스는 개구부(O)로 배출되어, 팩 케이스(200)에 의한 벤팅 가스 유도 기능, 즉 덕트 기능이 제대로 구현되지 못할 수 있다. 하지만, 상기 실시 구성과 같이, 개구부(O)가 배터리 모듈(100)의 전방이나 후방 측에 직접 대면하는 부분에 위치하지 않고 X축 방향으로 배터리 모듈(100) 사이의 부분에 위치하는 경우, 배터리 모듈(100)로부터 배출되는 벤팅 가스가 개구부(O) 측으로 직접 향하지 않을 수 있다. 따라서, 멜팅 부재(300)는, 벤팅 가스가 팩 케이스(200)를 통해 외부로 배출될 때까지 일정 시간 이상 유지될 수 있으므로, 팩 케이스(200)의 덕트 기능이 제대로 구현되지 못하는 문제가 방지될 수 있다.
또한, 상기 팩 케이스(200)는, 도 1 및 도 2에 도시된 바와 같이, 좌우 방향으로 적층된 다수의 배터리 모듈(100)의 전방 및 후방 중 적어도 일측에 위치할 수 있다. 그리고, 다수의 배터리 모듈(100)은, 적어도 일부분이 상호 간 소정 거리 이격되게 구성될 수 있다. 이에 대해서는, 도 11을 추가로 참조하여 보다 구체적으로 설명한다.
도 11은, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 배터리 팩의 일부 구성을 정면에서 바라본 형태의 단면도이다.
도 11을 참조하면, 다수의 배터리 모듈(100)이 수평 방향(X축 방향)으로 적층되되, 각 배터리 모듈(100)은 적층 방향으로 소정 거리 이격되게 배치될 수 있다. 즉, 도 11에서 A4로 표시된 부분과 같이, 다수의 배터리 모듈(100) 사이에는, 소정 공간이 형성될 수 있다. 그리고, 이러한 공간에는 공기가 존재할 수 있다. 특히, 다수의 배터리 모듈(100)은, 이러한 이격 부분이 상부 및/또는 하부 방향으로 노출되게 구성될 수 있다. 이 경우, 배터리 모듈(100) 사이의 이격 공간으로, 배터리 팩 외부의 공기가 유출입될 수 있다.
더욱이, 도 1 및 도 2에 도시된 바를 추가로 참조하면, 배터리 모듈(100) 적층체의 전방 및 후방에 각각 전방 케이스(210)와 후방 케이스(220)가 위치할 수 있다. 그리고, 이러한 전방 케이스(210)와 후방 케이스(220) 사이의 공간 대부분은 상부 및 하부로 노출되게 구성될 수 있다. 즉, 배터리 모듈(100) 적층체는, 전방 케이스(210)와 후방 케이스(220)에 의해 전단과 후단의 일부가 커버될 뿐, 각 배터리 모듈(100)의 상부와 하부 대부분은 외부로 노출되게 구성될 수 있다. 다시 말해, 각 배터리 모듈(100)의 상당한 부분은 팩 케이스(200)에 의해 덮여지지 않고 외부로 노출될 수 있다. 이때, 각 배터리 모듈(100) 사이의 공간도 외부로 노출될 수 있다. 특히, 이러한 배터리 모듈(100) 사이의 이격 공간(A4)은, 배터리 팩의 전후 방향(Y축 방향)으로 길게 연장된 형태로 형성될 수 있다.
본 발명의 이러한 실시 구성에 의하면, 배터리 모듈(100) 사이의 공간에 공기가 존재하여 단열층으로 기능할 수 있다. 따라서, 배터리 모듈(100) 사이의 열전달 성능이 보다 향상될 수 있다. 더욱이, 배터리 모듈(100) 사이의 공간은 외부로 노출되어 있으므로, 뜨거워진 공기는 배터리 모듈(100) 사이의 공간에서 외부로 배출되고, 외부의 차가운 공기는 배터리 모듈(100) 사이의 공간으로 유입될 수 있다.
또한, 상기 도 11의 배터리 모듈(100) 사이의 이격 공간(A4)에는, 단열성을 갖는 열차단 부재나 화염 차단 부재가 개재될 수도 있다.
이러한 실시 구성에서, 배터리 팩의 전방 및/또는 후방 측에 위치하는 팩 케이스(200)의 개구부(O)는, 이러한 배터리 모듈(100) 사이의 이격 공간과 연통되게 구성될 수 있다. 즉, 벤팅 가스 등으로 인해 멜팅 부재(300)가 개구부(O)로부터 제거된 경우, 개구부(O)는 모듈 사이의 이격 공간과 연결될 수 있는 위치에 마련될 수 있다.
본 발명의 이러한 구성에 의하면, 배터리 모듈(100) 사이의 단열 공간과 개구부(O)의 연통으로 인해, 배터리 모듈(100) 사이의 열전달 억제 효과가 더욱 향상될 수 있다. 더욱이, 배터리 모듈(100) 사이의 이격 공간, 즉 단열 공간은 상부 및 하부뿐 아니라, 팩 케이스(200)의 개구부(O)를 통해 외부와 연결될 수 있다. 따라서, 배터리 모듈(100) 사이의 이격 공간에 대한 공기의 통풍 효과가 증대되어, 배터리 모듈(100) 간 열 차단 성능이 보다 향상될 수 있다.
도 12는, 본 발명의 다른 실시예에 따른 일부 팩 케이스(200)의 구성을 개략적으로 나타내는 전개도이다. 특히, 도 12는, 도 9의 실시 구성에 대한 변형예라 할 수 있다. 도 12에서도 팩 케이스(200)의 개구부(O)에 결합된 멜팅 부재(300)에 대해서는 도시를 생략한다. 본 실시예를 비롯한 본 발명의 여러 실시예들에 대해서는, 다른 실시예들에서 설명된 내용이 동일 또는 유사하게 적용될 수 있는 부분에 대해서는 상세한 설명을 생략하고 차이점이 있는 부분을 위주로 설명한다.
도 12를 참조하면, 팩 케이스(200)에는 다수의 개구부(O)가 형성될 수 있다. 특히, 개구부(O)는, 수평 방향(X축 방향)으로도 다수 형성되고, 수직 방향(Z축 방향)으로도 다수 형성될 수 있다. 이때, 수직 방향으로 배치된 다수의 개구부(O) 사이의 이격 공간은, 수평 방향으로 서로 엇갈리게 배치될 수 있다. 즉, 좌우 방향으로 인접한 개구부(O)에 있어서, 개구부(O)가 형성되지 않은 부분은 A6로 표시된 부분과 같다. 그리고, 이러한 A6 부분(개구부 사이의 부분, 또는 개구부의 단부)은, 수평 방향으로 다수 배치되되, 인접한 A6 부분끼리는 수직 방향(Z축 방향)으로 동일한 위치에 위치하지 않고, 서로 다른 위치에 위치하도록 지그재그 형태로 배치될 수 있다. 다시 말해, 수평 방향으로 인접한 A6 부분끼리는, 상하 방향으로 서로 다른 높이에 배치될 수 있다.
본 발명의 이러한 실시 구성에 의하면, 팩 케이스(200)를 통한 열전도가 개구부(O)에 의해 보다 효과적으로 억제될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 도 12의 A5로 표시된 부분에서 열적 이벤트가 발생한 경우, 열은 팩 케이스(200)를 통해 좌우 방향으로 전달될 수 있다. 여기서, 멜팅 부재(300)가 제거되어 팩 케이스(200)의 개구부(O)가 개방되면, 열은 주로 A6로 표시된 부분으로 전도될 수 있다. 이때, 인접한 A6 부분은 서로 다른 높이에 위치하므로, 열은 X축 방향으로 직선 형태로 이동하지 못하고, 화살표로 표시된 바와 굴곡된 형태로 이동할 수 있다. 따라서, 팩 케이스(200)를 통한 열의 수평 방향 이동 경로가 길어지게 되므로, 열의 전달량 및 전달 속도가 감소될 수 있다. 그러므로, 수평 방향으로 배치된 배터리 모듈(100) 사이에서, 팩 케이스(200)를 통해 열이 전달되는 문제가 보다 효과적으로 억제될 수 있다.
도 13은, 본 발명의 또 다른 실시예에 따른 팩 케이스(200)의 일부 구성을 개략적으로 나타내는 단면도이다. 예를 들어, 도 13은, 도 12의 C4-C4'선에 대한 단면 구성의 변형예로서, 멜팅 부재(300)가 제거된 상태의 구성을 나타낸다고 할 수 있다. 특히, 도 13은, 도 8에 도시된 바와 같은, 후방 케이스(220)의 수평 방향 단면 구성에 대하여 상부에서 바라본 형태의 도면의 일 실시예라 할 수 있다.
도 13을 참조하면, 팩 케이스(200)에 개구부(O)가 형성되되, 개구부(O)의 주변에, P로 표시된 바와 같은 돌기가 형성될 수 있다. 이러한 돌기(P)는, 팩 케이스(200)의 내면, 즉 배터리 모듈(100)을 향하는 측 표면에서, 배터리 모듈(100)이 위치하는 내측 방향으로 돌출되게 형성될 수 있다. 이때, 돌기(P)는, 팩 케이스(200)의 일부를 절곡시킨 형태, 또는 별도의 구성요소를 팩 케이스(200)에 부착한 형태 등 다양한 방식으로 구성될 수 있다.
본 발명의 이러한 실시 구성에 의하면, 멜팅 부재(300)가 용융되어 개구부(O)가 개방된 상태에서 벤팅 가스가 배터리 모듈(100)로부터 계속해서 배출되더라도, 벤팅 가스가 개구부(O)를 통해 팩 케이스(200) 외부로 유출되는 것이 감소될 수 있다. 즉, 배터리 모듈(100)로부터 배출된 벤팅 가스는 팩 케이스(200)의 내면을 따라 흐를 수 있다. 이때, 개구부(O)가 개방되어 있다 하더라도, 개구부(O) 주변에 형성된 돌기(P)에 의해, 벤팅 가스의 흐름 방향은, 도 13에서 화살표로 표시된 바와 같이, 개구부(O) 주변에서 내측 방향을 향하도록 절곡될 수 있다. 따라서, 벤팅 가스는 개구부(O)를 통해 외부로 배출될 가능성이 낮아질 수 있다. 그러므로, 이 경우, 멜팅 부재(300)가 제거된 상태에서도, 팩 케이스(200)의 벤팅 가스 가이드 기능은 일정 수준 이상 지속되도록 할 수 있다.
또한, 이러한 실시 구성에 의하면, 돌기(P)를 통해 멜팅 부재(300)가 용이하게 결합될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 멜팅 부재(300)의 일부가 돌기(P)에 삽입되는 형태로, 멜팅 부재(300)는 팩 케이스(200)의 개구부(O)에 결합될 수 있다. 따라서, 멜팅 부재(300)와 팩 케이스(200) 사이의 결합성이 향상될 수 있다.
도 14는, 본 발명의 또 다른 실시예에 따른 팩 케이스(200)의 일부 구성을 개략적으로 나타내는 단면도이다. 특히, 도 14는, 도 13의 구성에 대한 다른 변형예라 할 수 있다.
앞선 도 13의 실시예에서, 돌기(P)는, 팩 케이스(200)의 내면에서 수직 방향으로 돌출되는 형태로 구성되어 있다. 하지만, 도 14의 실시예와 같이, 돌기(P)는, 팩 케이스(200)의 내면에 대하여 소정 각도 기울어진 형태로 구성될 수 있다. 특히, 돌기(P)는, 개구부(O)의 반대 측 방향으로 기울어진 형태로 구성될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 도 14의 구성에서, 개구부(O)를 중심으로 좌측에 위치한 돌기(P)는, 내측 방향(-Y축 방향)으로 갈수록 좌측 방향(-X축 방향)으로 기울어진 형태로 형성될 수 있다. 그리고, 개구부(O)를 중심으로 우측에 위치한 돌기(P)는, 내측 방향(-Y축 방향)으로 갈수록 우측 방향(+X축 방향)으로 기울어진 형태로 형성될 수 있다.
본 발명의 이러한 실시 구성에 의하면, 개구부(O)가 개방된 상태에서 벤팅 가스가 개구부(O)로 배출되는 것을 보다 효과적으로 억제할 수 있다. 즉, 도 14에서 화살표로 표시된 바와 같이, 팩 케이스(200)의 내면을 따라 흐르는 벤팅 가스는 돌기에 의해, 개구부(O) 부근에서 90°보다 큰 각도로 방향이 전환될 수 있다. 따라서, 벤팅 가스가 개구부(O)로 향할 가능성을 낮출 수 있다. 그러므로, 이 경우, 팩 케이스(200)에 의한 벤팅 가스 가이드 성능이 보다 향상될 수 있다.
도 15는, 본 발명의 또 다른 실시예에 따른 팩 케이스(200)의 일부 구성을 개략적으로 나타내는 단면도이다. 이러한 도 15의 구성은, 도 13의 구성에 대한 또 다른 변형예라 할 수 있다.
도 15의 구성을 참조하면, 돌기(P)는 팩 케이스(200)의 내면에서 개구부(O)의 주변에 형성되되, 내측으로 갈수록 개구부를 향하는 방향으로 기울어진 형태로 구성될 수 있다. 즉, 돌기(P)는 개구부를 완전히 밀폐시키지는 않으면서도 개구부(O)의 일부를 커버하는 형태로 구성될 수 있다. 더욱이, 팩 케이스(200)가 덕트의 기능을 수행하는 경우, 돌기(P)는 배터리 모듈(100)에 가까워질수록 팩 케이스(200)의 배출구(H1)를 향하는 방향으로 기울어진 형태로 구성될 수 있다. 더욱이, 이러한 돌기(P)는, 각 개구부(O)의 주변에서, 배출구(H1)의 반대 측에 위치할 수 있다. 즉, 도 15의 실시 구성의 경우, 팩 케이스(200)의 우측 단부에 배출구(H1)가 형성되어 있다고 할 수 있고, 돌기(P)는 개구부(O1)의 좌측 단부에 위치하여, 내측으로 갈수록 우측 방향으로 기울어진 형태로 구성되어 있다.
본 발명의 이러한 실시 구성에 의하면, 멜팅 부재(300)가 개구부(O)로부터 제거된 상태에서도, 벤팅 가스가 개구부(O)로 유출되는 것을 최대한 억제하는 한편, 벤팅 가스가 배출구(H1)를 향해 원활하게 가이드되도록 할 수 있다. 따라서, 멜팅 부재(300)가 제거된 상태에서도 팩 케이스(200)의 덕트 기능은 잘 유지될 수 있다.
본 발명에 따른 배터리 팩은, 본 발명의 출원 시점에 공지된 배터리 팩의 여러 다른 구성요소들을 더 포함할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 본 발명에 따른 배터리 팩은, 배터리 관리 시스템(Battery Management System; BMS)이나 전류 센서, 퓨즈 등의 구성요소를 더 포함할 수 있다.
본 발명에 따른 에너지 저장 시스템은, 본 발명에 따른 배터리 팩을 하나 이상 포함할 수 있다. 특히, 에너지 저장 시스템은, 큰 에너지 용량을 갖기 위해, 본 발명에 따른 배터리 팩이 서로 전기적으로 연결된 형태로 다수 포함되도록 할 수 있다. 이 밖에도, 본 발명에 따른 에너지 저장 시스템은, 본 발명의 출원 시점에 공지된 에너지 저장 시스템의 다른 다양한 구성요소를 더 포함할 수 있다. 더욱이, 이러한 에너지 저장 시스템은, 스마트 그리드 시스템이나 전기 충전 스테이션 등 다양한 장소나 장치에 사용될 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명에 따른 자동차는, 본 발명에 따른 배터리 팩을 하나 이상 포함할 수 있다. 그리고, 본 발명에 따른 자동차는, 이러한 배터리 팩 이외에 자동차에 포함되는 다른 다양한 구성요소 등을 더 포함할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 본 발명에 따른 자동차는, 본 발명에 따른 배터리 팩 이외에, 차체나 모터, ECU(electronic control unit) 등의 제어 장치 등을 더 포함할 수 있다.
한편, 본 명세서에서는 상, 하, 좌, 우, 전, 후와 같은 방향을 나타내는 용어가 사용될 수 있으나, 이러한 용어들은 설명의 편의를 위한 것일 뿐, 대상이 되는 사물의 위치나 관측자의 위치 등에 따라 달라질 수 있음은 본 발명의 당업자에게 자명하다. 또한, 본 명세서에서는, 내측과 외측이라는 용어가 사용되었는데, 특별한 설명이 없는 한, 각 구성요소에 대하여, 내측 방향은 배터리 팩의 중심을 향하는 방향을 의미하고, 외측 방향은 그 반대 방향을 의미한다고 할 수 있다.
이상과 같이, 본 발명은 비록 한정된 실시예와 도면에 의해 설명되었으나, 본 발명은 이것에 의해 한정되지 않으며 본 발명이 속하는 기술분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자에 의해 본 발명의 기술사상과 아래에 기재될 특허청구범위의 균등범위 내에서 다양한 수정 및 변형이 가능함은 물론이다.

Claims (10)

  1. 각각 하나 이상의 배터리 셀을 구비하여 에너지를 저장 및 방출하도록 구성되며 적어도 일 방향으로 적층된 다수의 배터리 모듈;
    상기 다수의 배터리 모듈의 적어도 일측에 구비되어, 상기 다수의 배터리 모듈의 외부를 적어도 일부 커버하며, 하나 이상의 개구부가 형성된 팩 케이스; 및
    상기 팩 케이스의 개구부에 구비되어 상기 개구부를 밀폐시키며, 상기 다수의 배터리 모듈 중 하나 이상의 배터리 모듈로부터 발생된 열에 의해 용융되어 상기 개구부를 개방시키도록 구성된 멜팅 부재
    를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 팩.
  2. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 팩 케이스는, 상기 다수의 배터리 모듈 중 하나 이상의 배터리 모듈로부터 가스가 발생한 경우, 발생된 가스를 가이드하도록 구성되며,
    상기 멜팅 부재는, 상기 발생된 가스에 의해 용융되도록 구성된 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 팩.
  3. 제2항에 있어서,
    상기 다수의 배터리 모듈은, 좌우 방향으로 나란하게 배치되어 전방 또는 후방으로 벤팅 가스가 배출되게 구성되며,
    상기 팩 케이스는, 상기 다수의 배터리 모듈의 전방 및 후방 중 적어도 하나에 배치된 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 팩.
  4. 제3항에 있어서,
    상기 팩 케이스는, 상기 다수의 배터리 모듈의 전방 또는 후방에 위치하는 본체부 및 상기 본체부의 상단과 하단이 절곡된 형태로 구성된 절곡부를 구비하는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 팩.
  5. 제4항에 있어서,
    상기 개구부는, 상기 본체부 및 상기 절곡부에 모두 형성된 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 팩.
  6. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 개구부는, 상기 다수의 배터리 모듈의 적층 방향에 직교하는 방향으로 길게 연장된 형태로 구성된 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 팩.
  7. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 개구부는, 적어도 일부분이 상기 다수의 배터리 모듈 사이에 위치하도록 형성된 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 팩.
  8. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 팩 케이스는, 상기 다수의 배터리 모듈의 전방 및 후방 중 적어도 일측에 위치하며,
    상기 다수의 배터리 모듈은, 적어도 일부분이 상호 간 소정 거리 이격되어, 이격된 부분이 상부 및 하부 중 적어도 한 방향으로 노출되게 구성된 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 팩.
  9. 제1항 내지 제8항 중 어느 한 항에 따른 배터리 팩을 포함하는 에너지 저장 시스템.
  10. 제1항 내지 제8항 중 어느 한 항에 따른 배터리 팩을 포함하는 자동차.
