- the raw materials may be a precursor of a compound consisting of Li and F, and a precursor of a compound consisting of Al and F.
- the raw material may be a powder.
- the raw material may have an average particle diameter of, for example, 0.5 ⁇ m or more and 10 ⁇ m or less.
- the compound may be obtained by subjecting the mixture of raw materials to a solid phase reaction.
- the mixture of raw materials may be heat-treated (baked), for example. That is, in the first step S100, the compound may be synthesized by firing a mixture of raw materials.
- a mixed material in which the above-mentioned raw materials are uniformly mixed is placed in a heat-resistant alumina container (pod) and fired. If the raw material is stable in the atmosphere, it may be fired in the atmosphere.
- the raw material In order to exhaust unnecessary reaction gas in the firing furnace, it may be allowed to flow through the atmosphere during firing. If the raw material has poor atmospheric stability, it may be calcined in an inert gas atmosphere such as argon or nitrogen. For example, during the firing process, while nitrogen flows into the furnace, the reaction gas (moisture and unnecessary gas components, etc.) is discharged, and the temperature is maintained in the solid phase reaction temperature range (e.g., 700°C or higher and 900°C or lower) for more than 1 hour. and baked for 20 hours or less. In this way, by introducing the atmosphere or an inert gas into the firing furnace and discharging it, it is possible to prevent unnecessary reaction gas components and the like from remaining in the synthesized compound in the furnace.
- an inert gas atmosphere such as argon or nitrogen.
- the gas inlet is preferably installed at the bottom of the furnace, and the exhaust port is preferably installed at the top (for example, on the ceiling or above the side wall).
- the reaction gas can be smoothly discharged out of the furnace along with the flow of convection in the firing furnace from the bottom to the top, so that it is possible to reduce the mixing of unnecessary components into the compound.
- the introduced gas may be heated before being introduced into the firing furnace. This can prevent the temperature distribution within the pod from becoming non-uniform. As a result, the reaction distribution within the pod can be homogenized, and a more homogeneous compound can be obtained.
- the firing temperature may be any temperature at which the target compound is produced. Calcining may be performed at a temperature higher than the melting point of the target compound. When firing at a temperature equal to or higher than the melting point of the target compound, since the molten state has higher fluidity than the solid state, the composition diffuses and a homogeneous block body can be obtained.
- the firing temperature may be from 700°C to 900°C.
- the firing time may be from 0.5 hours to 40 hours.
- the temperature, time, and reaction gas discharge time necessary for synthesizing the target compound may be arbitrarily determined so that no raw materials remain. For example, the firing time may be adjusted depending on the amount of powder to be fired.
- the temperature gradually from the reaction initiation temperature for example, about 700° C.
- the temperature increase rate may be, for example, from 50°C/h to 250°C/h. This suppresses temperature non-uniformity within the firing furnace and within the powder. For example, the temperature difference within the powder is within 20° C. at most. As a result, the growth of crystal particles progresses uniformly, and a uniformly crystalline compound is synthesized.
- the uniformity of particle growth can be estimated by the pitch interval of growth streak patterns observed like tree rings in particle observation using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). For example, a striped pattern with a pitch of 0.05 ⁇ m to 0.2 ⁇ m is observed on particles of 1 ⁇ m size.
- SEM scanning electron microscope
- the temperature After holding the temperature around the reaction starting point, for example, 670°C to 730°C, for 0.5 to 4 hours, the temperature may be further increased. This allows the reaction to proceed more uniformly throughout the powder. As a result, residual raw materials and composition fluctuations are suppressed, and a homogeneous compound with good crystallinity can be synthesized.
- reaction starting point can be confirmed by thermogravimetric differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) of the mixed powder and by observing the heat of reaction. If there are multiple solid phase reactions, each temperature may be maintained, but as an example, holding at the highest reaction temperature is particularly effective for uniform reaction throughout the powder.
- TG-DTA thermogravimetric differential thermal analysis
- a known atmosphere firing furnace can be used.
- the inert gas may be flowed after vacuum displacement. Vacuum replacement may be performed repeatedly.
- the sheath used is, for example, a heat-resistant container made of dense alumina without air permeability.
- a heat-resistant container made of dense alumina without air permeability.
- it may be of the commonly used grade SSA-H (purity 95%, density 3.9 g/cm 3 , water absorption 0%) or higher. This allows synthesis without allowing the molten components to penetrate into the wall of the pod.
- SSA-H purity 95%, density 3.9 g/cm 3 , water absorption 0%
- SSA-H purity 95%, density 3.9 g/cm 3 , water absorption 0%
- the synthesized compound in the form of a molten block can be easily peeled from the pod without any reaction with the pod, the block of the compound can be recovered with less loss.
- the material of the sheath does not have to be alumina.
- any refractory material may be used as long as it has a high thermal conductivity equivalent to or higher than alumina and does not easily react with the compound.
- a high heat conductive refractory for the pod, it is possible to reduce the uneven temperature distribution within the pod.
- sheath materials include SSA-S, SSA-T, or SSA-995 grades of alumina, and high thermal conductivity refractories such as SiC, which has a thermal conductivity of approximately 17 W/m ⁇ k. It will be done.
- the powder may be sprayed and heat treated using a rotary kiln or spray drying.
- the raw material mixture may be fired twice. Thereby, variations in composition or crystallinity can be reduced. As a result, the solid phase reaction can proceed more homogeneously.
- the two firings may be performed under different conditions. For example, the temperature of the second firing may be higher than the temperature of the first firing in order to make the composition more homogeneous or to prevent residual raw materials. To improve crystallinity, the temperature of the second firing may be lower than the temperature of the first firing. Thereby, local distortion (amorphous component) can be removed. Firing may be performed for the third time or later.
- the mass change rate of the compound before and after firing may be 1% or less.
- the mass change rate of the compound before and after firing means the percentage of the absolute value of the difference between the mass of the raw material mixture before firing and the mass of the compound obtained after firing, with respect to the mass of the raw material mixture before firing.
- the method for synthesizing the compound containing Li, Al, and F may be a mechanochemical method instead of calcination. That is, the compound may be synthesized by reaction using mechanochemical treatment. For example, the raw material is placed in a planetary ball mill or pot mill together with a grinding medium such as zirconia balls for grinding. The reaction proceeds and a crystalline compound is synthesized by repetition under appropriate stress that can maintain crystallinity under impact from the grinding media. Because it is synthesized in a closed space, there is no evaporation of the composition, and all the raw materials placed in the container can be recovered, making it easy to obtain the composition as originally prepared.
- mechanochemical treatment for example, the raw material is placed in a planetary ball mill or pot mill together with a grinding medium such as zirconia balls for grinding. The reaction proceeds and a crystalline compound is synthesized by repetition under appropriate stress that can maintain crystallinity under impact from the grinding media. Because it is synthesized in a closed space, there is no
- the mechanochemical treatment is too strong, compounds with low crystallinity may be synthesized.
- the first step and the second step may be performed using this as a raw material. That is, the first step and the second step may be carried out using a compound with low crystallinity synthesized by a reaction by mechanochemical treatment as a raw material.
- the low crystallinity compound synthesized by the reaction by mechanochemical treatment has reduced compositional variations during the firing process and improved crystallinity.
- the grinding media may be a known partially stabilized zirconia.
- Partially stabilized zirconia has excellent wear resistance. By using partially stabilized zirconia as a grinding medium, synthesis can be achieved with reduced contamination of impurities due to wear.
- a grinding medium of 10% to 60% based on the volume of the container is placed in a mill container, sealed with an inert gas (nitrogen or argon, etc.), and the mill is rotated and stirred.
- an inert gas nitrogen or argon, etc.
- the mechanochemical treatment may be performed in the atmosphere as long as the raw material has atmospheric stability.
- the shape of the grinding medium may be, for example, spherical with a diameter of 2 mm to 30 mm.
- the grindability (for example, synthesis rate) can be adjusted as appropriate and various media sizes can be used.
- the inner wall of the ball mill may also be made of the same material as the hard grinding media, such as zirconia.
- the shape of the inner wall may be cylindrical or polygonal, such as rectangular.
- the mechanochemical treatment time is, for example, 1 hour or more and 80 hours or less. Generally, it is 10 hours or more and 20 hours or less.
- the synthesis rate may be improved by heating the ball mill from the outside to activate the reaction. For example, it may be heated from 40°C to 60°C. This allows synthesis to be performed in a shorter time, resulting in excellent mass productivity.
- synthesis can proceed with just the shear stress of the mortar and pestle.
- the mechanochemical treatment may be carried out in an automatic mortar (eg, a grinder) or by hand.
- the rate of synthesis may be increased by heating the mortar.
- the reaction temperature may be controlled to stabilize the synthesis state.
- a mortar can be placed on a hot plate to perform the mixing operation.
- the crystals contained in the compound synthesized in the first step S100 may be monoclinic or orthorhombic.
- an orthorhombic crystal which is a solid solution with a non-stoichiometric ratio of subcomponents incorporated into the crystal, can be obtained. It may happen.
- Ti may be included in an amount of 1% by mass based on Li 3 AlF 6 .
- “Including Ti in Li 3 AlF 6” means, for example, obtaining a solid solution in which Ti is introduced into Li 3 AlF 6 or obtaining a system containing Li 3 AlF 6 and Ti. .
- the compound synthesized in the first step S100 contains at least one selected from the group consisting of monoclinic crystals and orthorhombic crystals, by distorting the crystallinity in the second step S200, Ionic conductivity can be improved.
- the crystals contained in the compound synthesized in the first step S100 may be orthorhombic.
- the ionic conductivity after the second step S200 is more easily improved, and the improvement is about 1.3 to 2 times that in the case of the monoclinic system. This is thought to be due to the formation of lattice defects in the crystal due to the non-stoichiometric ratio, which reduces the binding effect of Li ions by F ions with high electronegativity, and improves ionic conductivity. .
- the synthesized compound may be a molten body, a sintered body, or a block-like mass of solidified powder.
- the block-shaped mass of solidified powder is easy to handle and has good productivity.
- the compound may contain elements other than Li, Al, and F (ie, subcomponents). Examples of subcomponents are Ni, Mo, Cr, Fe, ZrO 2 or Ti.
- the content of the subcomponent may be, for example, from 0.013% by mass to 3% by mass with respect to the compound, and from 0.013% by mass to 3% by mass with respect to Li, Al, and F. It's okay.
- Such subcomponents act as promoters of the solid phase reaction, allowing the reaction to proceed uniformly in a shorter time or at a lower temperature. Therefore, a solid electrolyte material having high ionic conductivity can be obtained with high synthesis efficiency. It is also possible to reduce synthesis energy.
- the firing temperature may be lower than when synthesizing a compound consisting only of Li, Al, and F.
- the firing temperature may be from 650°C to 900°C.
- the synthesized compound contains a crystal phase containing Li, Al, and F. From the X-ray diffraction pattern, a crystal system such as monoclinic or orthorhombic, for example, can be identified.

- some of the starting material may remain.
- the remaining starting material may be less than the compound containing the crystalline phase containing Li, Al, and F. That is, a compound containing a crystal phase containing Li, Al, and F may be synthesized as a main component. In this way, the small amount of starting material remaining after the first step does not significantly reduce the conductivity as long as it is smaller than Li 3 AlF 6 .
- Step S200 In the second step S200, a process is performed to disturb the crystals of the compound synthesized in the first step S100. For example, mechanical stress or impact is applied to the compound obtained in the first step S100. Thereby, an amorphous body can be formed.
- the treatment that disturbs the crystals is, for example, mechanochemical treatment. That is, in the second step S200, the compound may be mechanochemically treated. Distorted crystals or amorphous properties can be introduced by mechanochemical treatment of crystal-containing compounds.
- the mechanochemical treatment method may be the same as the mechanochemical treatment described in the first step S100.
- Mechanochemical treatment has less contamination of impurities and suppresses composition deviation. It also has good workability and excellent productivity.
- the manufacturing equipment, medium, etc. used in the synthesis can also be used in the second step S200.
- the mechanochemical treatment may be ball milling. That is, in the second step S200, the compound may be subjected to mechanochemical treatment using a ball mill.
- the mechanochemical treatment in the second step S200 reduces the crystallinity of the powder or particles (especially the surface layer region) of the synthesized compound. That is, the mechanochemical treatment in the second step S200 makes the compound amorphous. In particular, it reduces the crystallinity of the surface layer region of the compound in the form of powder or particles.
- the treatment time may be shorter than in the first step S100 in which a compound is synthesized by reaction by mechanochemical treatment, and the conditions may be such that the pulverization or collision energy is small. .
- the amount of grinding media may be smaller than the mechanochemical treatment in the first step S100, or the amount of powder introduced may be larger. Therefore, since the equipment is simpler than in general mechanochemical synthesis, productivity is excellent.
- zirconia container mechanochemical milling is performed by placing zirconia balls in an amount of 10% or more and 60% or less of the volume of the container.
- zirconia balls having a diameter of 1 mm to 30 mm are usually used, but they may be smaller or larger than this.
- the grinding media may be grinding balls of low specific gravity, e.g. alumina-based, in order to control (e.g. dampen) the mechanochemical action.
- additives that do not adversely affect the properties of the solid electrolyte material may be added.
- the additive may be one that can be removed by drying.
- An example of an additive is ethanol.
- Containers used for mechanochemical processing may be small in order to reduce internal heat generation due to strong impact and frictional effects.
- a general ball mill using a pot mill which is most commonly used in the mass production process of ceramic pulverization treatment, may be used.
- Containers with various capacities can be used, from tens of milliliters to hundreds of liters, and it is possible to process compounds ranging from several grams to several hundred kilograms.
- a solid electrolyte material having high conductivity can be synthesized in a short time while suppressing compositional fluctuations of components that easily evaporate, such as Li.
- the compositional variation can be suppressed to between -0.01% by mass and 1% by mass (powder mass ratio before firing) based on the powder mass of the raw material.
- the introduction of the amorphous component in the second step can be confirmed from the X-ray diffraction pattern obtained by powder X-ray diffraction measurement.
- the softness of the powder particles can be increased. That is, crystallinity can be reduced.
- the softness of powder particles can be comparatively evaluated with respect to changes in crystallinity by micro-Vickers evaluation for each particle or powder structure.
- the softness of powder particles can also be confirmed by visually observing changes in powder properties during the manufacturing process. This is because as the mechanochemical treatment time increases, the crystallinity changes, i.e. the softness of the powder particles increases, and the amount of powder adhering to the inner walls of the ball mill container and zirconia balls, for example, also increases correspondingly. Because it does.
- the method for manufacturing a solid electrolyte material according to the second embodiment may include pulverizing the compound after the second step S200.
- pulverizing a compound will be referred to as a "pulverizing step.”
- stirring milling may be performed using zirconia beads with a diameter of 1 mm or less as the pulverization medium.
- the solid electrolyte material can be in the form of particles with a particle size of 1 ⁇ m or less. This not only reduces the particle size but also forms an amorphous substance on the particle surface. As a result, the obtained solid electrolyte material can be used, for example, as a thin solid electrolyte layer.
- the obtained calcination product includes a state in which the particles are necked together due to a solid phase reaction between contact particles, that is, a state in which they are combined (here, necked agglomerates
- the size of the fixed particles is mainly from 1 ⁇ m to 10 ⁇ m.Furthermore, in an aligned crystalline state of F, which is an anion with large electronegativity and a strong Li ion restraining effect, It has almost no ionic conductivity. For this reason, when used as a solid electrolyte material, it is necessary to crush the necked agglomerated particles and disturb the crystallinity, that is, the second step. .
- Samples 1 to 11 of solid electrolyte materials were manufactured. Samples 1 to 3 correspond to comparative examples, and samples 4 to 11 correspond to examples. Samples 1 to 3 did not involve synthesizing a compound containing a crystalline phase containing Li, Al, and F in the production of the solid electrolyte material. This example will be described in detail below.
- the prepared raw material powder was mixed uniformly with a pestle using an alumina porcelain mortar for about 10 minutes to obtain a mixed powder.
- the mixed powder and zirconia balls (about 1000 g) with a diameter of 15 mm were placed in a 1 L cylindrical ball mill container with an inner wall made of zirconia, and ball milled at a rotation speed of 60 rpm to 80 rpm at room temperature for 3 hours. After this, the treated powder was taken out from the ball mill container. In this way, the solid electrolyte material of Sample 1 was obtained.
- a solid electrolyte material of Sample 3 was obtained in the same manner as Sample 1 except that the ball milling time was 12 hours.
- the powders of these starting materials were mixed uniformly with a pestle using an alumina porcelain mortar for about 10 minutes to obtain a mixed powder.
- the obtained mixed powder (approximately 5 g) was placed in a high purity (SSA-H) alumina pod (diameter 40 mm, height 45 mm).
- SSA-H high-purity alumina lid was placed and sealed.
- tsuku Three supports (i.e., tsuku) were placed under one pod to lift the pod from the bottom of the hearth.
- the material is made of mullite, has a porosity of about 20%, and has a small heat capacity. This allows heater heat (that is, radiant heat) and inert gas to circulate to the bottom of the pod.
- the dimensions of the plug were 10 mm in length, 11 mm in width, and 10 mm in height.
- nitrogen gas is poured in from the inlet at the bottom of the furnace at a rate of 1L/min to 3L/min, and is discharged from the exhaust port on the upper side of the ceiling, allowing the nitrogen gas to flow until firing is completed. I continued to do so.
- the unnecessary components and dust can be carried by convection and discharged out of the furnace. Thereby, contamination of impurities into the fired sample can be reduced.
- an alumina plate with a thickness of 3 mm was placed around the midpoint between the gas inlet and the pod to partially shield the introduced gas from directly hitting the pod. Note that the distance between the gas inlet and the pod was about 10 cm.
- the firing conditions were as follows: The temperature was raised to 700°C at a rate of 100°C/h and held at 700°C for 2 hours, and then the temperature was raised to 750°C at 200°C/h and held for 4 hours. Then, it was cooled to room temperature at a rate of about 200°C/h. Note that the temperature was the actual temperature inside the pod.
- the mass reduction rate after firing was approximately 0.1% by mass to 1.0% by mass, and evaporation was almost suppressed. Therefore, the composition can be considered to be as prepared.
- the fired product (approximately 5 g) in the pod was coarsely ground in advance to approximately 10 ⁇ m using an alumina porcelain mortar and pestle.
- the coarsely ground fired product and a zirconia ball mill (about 1000 g) with a diameter of 15 mm were placed in a 1 L cylindrical ball mill container with an inner wall made of zirconia, and ball milling was performed at a rotation speed of 60 rpm to 80 rpm at room temperature for 3 hours. did. After this, the treated powder was taken out from the ball mill container.
- a solid electrolyte material of Sample 6 was obtained in the same manner as Sample 4 except that the ball milling time was 12 hours.
- a solid electrolyte material of Sample 7 was obtained in the same manner as Sample 4 except that the ball milling time was 20 hours.
- a sample was prepared in the same manner as Sample 7, except that 1% by mass of zirconium oxide was further added to the mixed powder to be fired in the first step, and the firing temperature maintained for 4 hours in the first step was 650°C. 9 solid electrolyte materials were obtained.
- a sample was prepared in the same manner as Sample 7, except that 1% by mass of titanium powder was further added to the mixed powder to be fired in the first step, and the firing temperature maintained for 4 hours in the first step was 650°C. Ten solid electrolyte materials were obtained.
- Sample 11 A solid electrolyte material of Sample 11 was obtained in the same manner as Sample 7 except that the firing temperature maintained for 4 hours in the first step was 850°C.
- sample evaluation The crystal phase and ionic conductivity were evaluated for each of the sample after the first step and the sample after the second step.
- the evaluation results after the first step are shown in Table 1.
- the evaluation results after the second step are shown in Table 2.
- the obtained sample was uniformly crushed and ground in an alumina mortar.
- the powder was ground to such an extent that no coarse particles were felt to the touch, for example, until the powder had an average particle size of 3 ⁇ m or less.
- the crystal phase was evaluated by powder X-ray diffraction measurement (XRD).
- XRD powder X-ray diffraction measurement
- An X-ray diffraction device (MiniFlex600, manufactured by RIGAKU) was used for the measurement.
- Cu-K ⁇ radiation (wavelengths 1.5405 ⁇ and 1.5444 ⁇ ) was used as the X-ray source.
- the crystal phase columns in Tables 1 and 2 were listed in descending order of the intensity of the strongest peak in the X-ray diffraction pattern.
- the phase listed on the leftmost side is the main component in the material.
- the ionic conductivity of the sample was determined by placing the sample powder into a mold (diameter 10 mm) and applying a pressure of approximately 3 t/cm using a uniaxial hydraulic press. Ionic conductivity was calculated from body area, thickness, and impedance characteristics at room temperature. Impedance measurements were performed at room temperature while applying pressure. Note that the impedance measurement was performed at a measurement frequency of 10 Hz to 10 MHz, a measurement voltage of 1 Vrms, and no DC bias. Discrepancies in the electrical length of the cable and measuring jig were evaluated by offsetting them.
- Samples 1 to 3 did not contain any amorphous material containing Li, Al, and F. Although not shown in Table 1, even if sample 3 was further subjected to ball milling for 100 hours or more, the ionic conductivity did not reach 1 ⁇ S/cm.
- FIG. 2 is a graph showing the X-ray diffraction patterns of samples 4 to 7.
- the fired product after the first step became a single phase of crystalline Li 3 AlF 6 . That is, LiF and AlF 3 were not observed in the X-ray diffraction pattern.
- samples 4 to 9 and sample 11 the crystals were monoclinic.
- sample 10 the crystals were orthorhombic.
- the ionic conductivity of samples 4 to 11 after the first step and before the second step is the same as the ionic conductivity of samples 1 to 3, which are mixtures of raw material powders, before the second step. It was about the same level.
- the diffraction angle 2 ⁇ for the characteristic X-ray of CuK ⁇ is a peak in a range of 20° or more and 22° or less (i.e., the first range), a peak in a range of 41° or more and 43° or less (i.e., A peak in a range of 37° or more and 39° or less (ie, a third range) is observed.
- the strongest peak in the first range will be referred to as the first peak
- the strongest peak in the second range will be referred to as the second peak
- the strongest peak in the third range will be referred to as the third peak.
- arrows indicate the first peak, second peak, and third peak.
- the intensity of the second peak is about 40% to 60% of the intensity of the first peak.
- the intensity of the third peak is about 10% to 30% of the intensity of the first peak. Therefore, the first peak has a higher intensity than the second peak, and the second peak has a higher intensity than the third peak.
- the half width of the first peak of Samples 4 to 11 was 1° or more.
- Li 3 AlF 6 powder particles obtained in the first step On the surface of the crystalline Li 3 AlF 6 powder particles obtained in the first step, no region is formed that has the softness (deformability) provided by disturbing the crystallinity. For this reason, the interparticle bonding properties of the compacted powder structure are low, and peeling is likely to occur during cooling and heating cycles.
- Li 3 AlF 6 containing soft and distorted crystals, that is, amorphous is formed into particles, and a highly reliable electrical conductivity of, for example, higher than 1 ⁇ S/cm is obtained in the compacted powder structure. becomes.
- the solid electrolyte material with the highest electrical conductivity was Sample 10, and the half width of the first peak was 2.22°.
- Samples 4 to 11 are considered to contain components with disordered atomic arrangement and low Li-restriction properties, that is, distorted crystals or amorphous materials. Crystals containing highly electronegative F ions generally have a strong Li ion restraining effect and tend to have low ionic conductivity. On the other hand, by introducing disorder into the atomic arrangement in the second step, it is possible to include an amorphous component that reduces the binding property of Li ions, that is, a distorted crystal or amorphous substance.
- Sample 11 was molten after firing because the firing temperature in the first step was higher than the melting point of the Li 3 AlF 6 solid solution. In this way, it was confirmed that a solid electrolyte material having the desired high ionic conductivity can also be obtained by performing the second step on a molten crystal (Li 3 AlF 6 solid solution).
- the Li 3 AlF 6 solid solution containing Fe, ZrO 2 , or Ti as a subcomponent has a lower firing temperature than Samples 4 to 7, which are other examples. Even at high temperature (650° C.), the solid electrolyte material had a high ionic conductivity of over 3 ⁇ S/cm. When the subcomponent is contained, it is considered to have the effect of promoting the solid phase reaction and suppressing the amount of starting materials.
- Li 3 AlF 6 forms an orthorhombic crystal system, and the solid electrolyte material after the second step has the highest ionic conductivity (3.8 ⁇ S/ cm).
- the solid electrolyte material of this example was synthesized in the atmosphere and has excellent atmospheric stability.
- the solid electrolyte material according to the present disclosure can be used, for example, in secondary batteries such as all-solid-state batteries used in various electronic devices or automobiles.
