Abstract
In one aspect the invention relates to a rock breaking unit which can be used to break rock non-expiosively. The unit (12) has an elongate tube (56) which is inserted in use into a hole (11) in a rock mass. There is also a propellant (64, 74) in the tube, a fuse (62, 72) associated with the propellant, and a capsule (66,76) of liquid (68, 78) in the tube adjacent the propellant and situated to be closer to the mouth of the hole than the propellant when the tube is inserted into the hole. When the propellant is ignited there is a rock breaking action which is contained by the liquid. In another aspect the invention relates to rock breaking apparatus (10) which includes the unit (12) together with a plug (14) that serves to anchor and seal the unit in the hole. The plug itself includes a central, hollow bolt 16 and radially expandable elements (36, 38, 86) on the bolt which are expanded into anchoring and sealing contact with the wall of the hole when the bolt is tensioned.
