Here, R means the ohmic resistance and 10 L the inductive reactance of the line between the relay location and the short-circuit point.

A particularly simple structure results for the new relay when it is designed in the manner of the Ferraris relay. You can save the damping magnet otherwise necessary for such relays if you choose the magnetic conditions accordingly. It is known that in a Ferraris relay two force flows which are shifted against each other act on a rotatable disk, which generate a torque which is proportional to the product of the two flows and the cosine of the angle formed by them. A damping moment is already exerted by a single flow, it is proportional to the angular velocity times the square of the flow.

If there are two flows acting on the disk, originating from current and voltage, the damping moment is proportional to the size

Flux changes proportionally to the current.

It is useful to use the new selective relay. A simple current relay is to be connected, which only releases the selective relay when a certain adjustable current level is reached, either by removing a mechanical inhibition or by switching on the voltage coil of the drive system via an auxiliary contact, so that it cannot be triggered in circuits below these current levels. The armature of this current relay can be connected to the selective relay, for example by a spring, in such a way that the current relay gives the selective relay an auxiliary torque that supports the drive system. This has the advantage that even if the voltage disappears, at which the torque of the drive system also disappears, a reliable triggering takes place.

Instead of the spring, which generates an auxiliary torque that is independent of the current strength, you can also choose any other connection that gives an auxiliary torque that is dependent on the voltage.

Furthermore, the instantaneous current relay can be connected to the selective relay, for example by a pull rod, which gives the selective relay an appropriately selected adjustable initial speed so that the disruptive influence of the inertia is compensated. In order to finally prevent unintentional tripping when the short circuit is prematurely switched off by other locations due to the moving parts of the selective relay running afterwards, the current relay is connected to appropriate devices that block the selective relay immediately when the overcurrent disappears.

To explain the invention, an embodiment is shown in the drawing. The new relay consists of the Ferrari disk a, which is driven by a three-pronged drive core b.

The middle leg carries a current winding that generates a few ampere turns, the outer leg each has a voltage winding with a very large number of ampere turns. Because the torque is generated by current and voltage, the relay only responds in a certain direction of the overcurrent, i.e. it is dependent on the direction of the current. Current and voltage are taken from the line system c to be protected by means of a current and voltage converter d and e, respectively.

In addition to the winding mentioned, the current also flows through the coil of a pure current relay 1, which in the embodiment described here has a fourfold task.

Firstly, it closes a contact g, via which the voltage coils of the Wattrelais are connected to voltage
 EMI2.2

Because even if contact i should still be closed, the tripping circuit is still open because relay 1, which immediately drops out when the overcurrent disappears, opens contact h.
Third, the relay 1 gives the disc a by means of the pulling element i! an impetus that the indolence of
Overcomes disc and brings it immediately to approximately the correct speed. Fourth, when appropriate
Choice of the spring m switched on in the pulling element by the tension when the relay responds /
Spring, an auxiliary torque can be exerted on the disk a during the entire deceleration time, which ensures reliable release when the tension disappears.

It should also be mentioned that a capacitor n is conveniently connected in series with the voltage winding of the main relay, which creates the correct phase shift between the two power flows arising in the core b, which gives the relay greater sensitivity at low voltages.
