Process for the preparation of a rust preventive agent containing various metals.
Rust inhibitors are already known which contain metals with a large gap in the voltage series. For example, copper and zinc in powder form or iron, aluminum and antimony have been used. The copper-containing paints are very expensive and cannot keep iron objects permanently rust-free because they are attacked by copper compounds. The second mixture has also not proven itself, since the metal contained in it oxidizes quickly and therefore the local electrical currents to be achieved do not arise.
In addition, these paints become cracked or peeled off after a short time, so that the iron body is exposed, or they do not adhere sufficiently firmly to the object, as a result of which bubbles form under which rust stains or rust streaks arise. This rust formation is constantly progressing under the paint and is mostly only noticed when it is already too late to protect the iron structure from complete destruction. Such agents, since they only mask the development of rust instead of preventing it, can only be described as harmful to iron objects.
According to the method forming the invention, however, it is possible to produce a paint composition which provides effective protection against the development of rust, adheres well to iron bodies and is elastic.
The method consists in adding a mass of flax oil mixed with black lead, a finely ground mixture of charcoal and lead and iron powder. Since lead and iron occupy widely different positions in the series of voltages, they act as a galvanic element. The resulting local electrical currents protect the iron under the paint against the effects of moisture, vapors, acids and the like. The like. That this effect remains permanent is achieved by adding charcoal, since it binds the incoming oxygen and thus protects the metal components of the paint against its influence.
The charcoal also has the purpose of reducing the specific weight of the powder mixture so that it remains evenly suspended in the base mass of black lead and linseed oil. It also gives the mass a coefficient of expansion that is approximately the same as that of iron, so that even with large temperature fluctuations, the paint cannot crack or flake off.
The required elasticity and spreadability of the paint is achieved by adding beeswax, ceresin, paraffin or the like.
Exemplary embodiment: Pure linseed oil, to which 5% black lead has been added, is heated to 140-160 C and boiled for some time, with 8% vaseline or paraffin and 12% pure beeswax being added to it with constant stirring. When the cooking is over, this mixture is drained into a cooling container. To 100 leg of this boiled and cooled mixture, a mixture of 36 legs of powdered charcoal, 80 legs of powdered lead or lead sponge and 32 kg of powdered iron is added, advantageously mixed with one another on a mixer and finally finely ground using a paint mill.
