Description

   Durch eingehende Untersuchungen wurde festgestellt, dass auch die Silizide der Erdalkalimetalle (Kalzium, Strontium, Baryum) und der seltenen Erdmetalle (z. B. Cer, Lanthan) im Aluminium unzersetzt bleiben und veredelnd wirken, indem sie bestimmte Sondereigenschaften hervorrufen, wenn ihre Menge so bemessen ist, dass sie bei höheren Temperaturen vom Aluminium vollkommen in Form fester Lösungen aufgenommen werden ;

  Process for refinement, especially for increasing the hardness and ductility of aluminum alloys.

   Recent studies on the three-component system aluminum: \ 1Iagnesium-silicon have made it known that magnesium and silicon form a chemical compound that is dissolved by aluminum without being decomposed. This connection causes an increase in the hardness of the aluminum, in particular a post-hardening during storage.

   In-depth studies have shown that the silicides of the alkaline earth metals (calcium, strontium, baryum) and the rare earth metals (e.g. cerium, lanthanum) remain undecomposed in aluminum and have an ennobling effect by producing certain special properties when their quantity is so high is dimensioned so that they are completely absorbed by the aluminum in the form of solid solutions at higher temperatures;

   as a rule, the amounts involved are up to 2%. For example, the beneficial influence of the silicides of calcium and strontium on the ductility of aluminum alloys is remarkable, which is particularly evident after appropriate heat or mechanical treatment. Further increases z. B. the calcium silicide the strength of the aluminum without the electrical conductivity is impaired, so that such alloys are of particular importance as a conductive material.

   It has also been found that the carbides and borides of the alkaline earth metals and the rare earth metals also have similar refining effects on aluminum.

   Because of the small amount of the possible additives of the silicides, carbides or borides mentioned, the machinability of the alloys is very high. The additives can be added to the aluminum individually, in pairs or in combination with one another within the range of their solubility. To further increase the strength values, other mixed fluid formers, such as B. copper, zinc, beryllium, individually or in groups, are added.

   It has finally been found that a further considerable improvement in the mechanical properties, namely the hardness and strength, of these alloys is achieved by adding small amounts (up to 3%) of high-melting components to them. These include: nickel, cobalt, iron, chromium, manganese, thorium, tantalum, titanium, vanadium, molybdenum, tungsten, boron; you can

 (such as copper vanadium, ferrotitanium, boron manganese, ferro-tungsten).

   PATENT CLAIMS:
1. Process for refining, in particular to increase the hardness and ductility of aluminum alloys, without impairing their other technically important properties, by compounds that are not decomposed by aluminum, characterized in that silicides, carbides or borides of the alkaline earth metals or the rare earth metals, individually, in twos or combined, in a maximum amount of about 2%, whereupon the alloys obtained are optionally subjected to thermal and aging treatments known per se.
