  Insulating compound for electrical purposes.

An insulating compound for electrical purposes is required to be as insensitive as possible to the effects of moisture. Among other things, numerous insulating compounds made of synthetic resins have been presented, and on the other hand, it has also been proposed to use mixtures of bituminous substances and cellulose esters of fatty acids for electrical insulation purposes, without these compounds having achieved any practical significance.

It has now been found that the cellulose esters are the higher fatty acids alone. without the addition of bituminous bodies, particularly suitable for the production of insulating compounds for electrical purposes and especially for the insulation of wires. The dielectric constant of the hard rubber z. B. at 180 C is 2.7, that of the cellulose dilaurate 2-5-3. A hard rubber sheet 1 mm thick has a dielectric strength of 30 K.V. The dielectric strength of an identical sheet made of cellulose dilaurate, on the other hand, is twice that. The new insulation compounds show excellent water resistance.

The dielectric strength of a rubber core immersed in water for 24 hours fell by half, while a wire insulated with an equally thick layer of cellulose dilaurate showed no noticeable decrease in dielectric strength after lying in water for several days.

For the stated purpose, the esters of all unsubstituted or substituted, saturated and unsaturated higher fatty acids, especially those with more
 EMI1.1
losaphtenate. The cellulose esters can be processed in the form of films or in such a way that paper or textiles are soaked with their solutions and used for insulation. Objects to be insulated can also be coated with a varnish which contains the cellulose derivatives mentioned.

Insofar as the esters in question are not soluble in organic solvents, insulating bodies can be produced from them by exposing them to mechanical pressure at an elevated temperature below the pour point of the cellulose derivative in question and bringing them into the desired shape, at the same time threads, fabrics or other carriers can also be pressed in for certain purposes.

The choice of the cellulose ester to be used depends on the intended use.

Of course, mixtures of several cellulose esters or mixed esters or ether esters of cellulose can also be used, e.g. B. cellulose acetate-cellulose laurate, cellulose butyratricinoleate, cellulose ethylate laurate, cellulose acetate butyrate laurate. All additives known from the plastic compound industry can be incorporated into the insulating compound.
