Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

So konnte z.

  Process for the production of aluminum by fused-salt electrolysis.

   During the electrolytic processing of calcined alumina on metallic aluminum in the known melt flow baths, certain requirements are placed not only on the chemical, but also on the physical properties of the starting material. Above all, the clay should not be too light; H. it should have a liter weight of not less than about 1'0, it should generate little dust and when it is placed in the bath, without forming hard crusts, it should always lie loosely on the melt and gradually dissolve without any special intervention. Too fine and specifically too light alumina, on the other hand, settles firmly on the bath surface with the formation of hard crusts, which often have to be chiseled open, sink to the bottom and dissolve poorly in the bath.

   It is known that in the previous alumina extraction processes only part of the calcined product has the desired bulk density and that the consumer is often supplied with alumina with a bulk density that is too low.

   It has now been found through experiments that such alumina, which is not directly usable for bathing, is too loose or too porous in its structure, has the higher bulk density sought by the consumer after it has been subjected to a process which consists in the Calcination pseudomorphic-crystalline resulting alumina while maintaining the powder form is exposed to strong pressure by using suitable devices in which the application of pressure is connected with a grinding process, such as nip rollers, pan grinders and the like. Treated. So could z. B. calcined clay can be brought from bulk weights between 0'50 to 0'70 to any bulk weight up to about 1'3.
